A computing device (e.g., a smartphone, a laptop computer, a tablet computer, a smartwatch, etc.) may use user gesture inputs to a graphical user interface (GUI) to determine a number of pages to move forward or back in paged digital content (e.g., electronic book, document file, digital article, word processing document, etc.). A machine learning model at the computing device may receive values such as contact location, pressure, and velocity of the user gesture to determine the number of pages to move forward or back.

Training data to construct the machine learning model may be obtained using physical books. One …

Gendered Political Violence As A Legal Framework: An Analysis Of The Brazilian Reality, Adriana Jacob Carneiro, Farida Jalalzai, Pedro A. G. Dos Santos Jul 2022

Gendered Political Violence As A Legal Framework: An Analysis Of The Brazilian Reality, Adriana Jacob Carneiro, Farida Jalalzai, Pedro A. G. Dos Santos

Political Science Faculty Publications

In August of 2021, the Brazilian government sanctioned in the Electoral Code and the Penal Code the typification of violence against women in politics (VAWIP) as a punishable crime. This research provides a critical analysis of the implementation of the 2021 Law n. 14.192 that typifies VAWIP as a crime. To do so we discuss how the law addresses, in theory, the types of VAWIP identified in the extant literature (physical, psychological, sexual, economic, and semiotic). We then discuss Brazil’s VAWIP law contextualizing it within the Brazilian political landscape, regional (as well as global) perspectives on the issue, and comparing …

Innovation In Adversity, Clark D. Asay, Stephanie Plamondon Bair Jul 2022

Innovation In Adversity, Clark D. Asay, Stephanie Plamondon Bair

Florida State University Law Review

Adverse experiences, like long-term poverty, can inhibit innovation. But as much research and many real-world examples show, adversity can also stimulate innovation. Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic provides a number of recent examples where adverse conditions have led individuals, firms, and governments to innovate in the hope of benefiting society. Despite the fact that some forms of adversity undermine innovation while others stimulate it, legal scholars have largely failed to distinguish between the two forms or even account for adversity's relationship to innovation when assessing innovation law and policy, including intellectual property (IP) laws. Yet given adversity's significant role in affecting …

Perceptions And Readiness Of Foodservice Establishments At The Onset Of The Covid-19 Pandemic In Metro Manila And Region Iv-A, Philippines, Von Ryan M. Ebron, Irma U. Danao, Marie Faye R. Nguyen- Orca, Anna Teresa O. Orillo, Joyce P. Parco

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

The study evaluated the perceptions and readiness of food business operators about COVID-19 through an online survey with respondents from Metro Manila and Region IV-A. Generally, they are knowledgeable about COVID-19 and its transmission, as reflected in their scores. The same is true about their attitude towards “new normal” practices. Years of operation, asset size, and continued operations and delivery services showed significant positive correlation with attitude scores. The resilience of some food business operators may be attributed to having more resources that enabled them to carry the added costs of what the new normal foodservice practices entailed. New normal …

Tissue Decay Tested In Modern Metasequoia Leaves: Implications For Early Diagenesis Of Leaves In Fossil Lagerstätten, Caitlyn R. Witkowski, Qin Leng, Christopher W. Reid, Liang Feng, Hong Yang

Science and Technology Department Faculty Journal Articles

Sedimentary deposits yielding extraordinarily-preserved fossils (known as Lagerstätten) may provide significant insights into the physiology and environments of ancient plants, particularly when the fossils represent their original characteristics with limited diagenetic modifications. To better understand molecular, isotopic, and morphological changes during the early stages of diagenesis, degradation experiments were conducted in two time series: 1) a laboratory decay series using fungi on leaves over the course of a month and 2) a natural decay series with leaves collected from different stages of leaf senescence and early diagenesis. Both experiments used modern leaves of the dawn redwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides …

Acute Kidney Injury In Perioperative Patients, Matthew Hall Jul 2022

Acute Kidney Injury In Perioperative Patients, Matthew Hall

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

In the surgical setting, caring for a patient in the operative and postoperative phases require perioperative care providers to be attentive to risk factors that can lead to potential harm. Of all the possible complications of surgical cases, acute kidney injury is more common than others. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is kidney function that abruptly declines over a few hours or days, increases serum creatinine, causes a period of oliguria, and has three levels of severity (Zarbock et al., 2018, p.1236-1237). Risk factors predispose patients to AKI, including age, diabetes, cardiac failure, previous history of AKI, sepsis, and many more. …

Exploring The Factors Influencing Employee Awareness Of Social Engineering Threats: A Review, Mohammed Fahad Alghenaim, Nur Azaliah Abu Bakar, Fiza Abdul Rahim

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Phishing is a dynamic threat, making it much more dangerous because a lack of awareness among employees makes it much more difficult for the business to detect and respond to Phishing situations. Social engineering is a process that essentially involves human interactions that can be exploited to the point where typical security methods become defective. The most dangerous risk of social engineering is that the criminals understand human nature and may exploit vulnerabilities without the victims realizing it. This study examines relevant research to determine the factors that may influence employee awareness of social engineering threats. Three demographic factors and …

Optimal Packing Of Two Disks On Torus, Zh. Kh. Zhunussova, Ye. K. Ashimov, K. A. Dosmagulova, L. Kh. Zhunussova Jul 2022

Optimal Packing Of Two Disks On Torus, Zh. Kh. Zhunussova, Ye. K. Ashimov, K. A. Dosmagulova, L. Kh. Zhunussova

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The article is devoted to recently established connection between the packing problem of disks on torus and the effective conductivity of composites with circular inclusions. The packing problem is usually investigated by geometrical arguments, the conductivity problem by means of elliptic functions. An algorithm is developed in order to determine the optimal location of two disks on torus formed by the hexagonal lattice and square lattice. The corresponding minimization function is constructed in terms of expressions consisting of elliptic functions with unknown arguments. The numerically found roots coincide with the previously established optimal points by a pure geometrical study.

Compositional And Functional Changes In Microbial Communities Of Composts Due To The Composting-Related Factors And The Presence Of Listeria Monocytogenes, Hongye Wang, Vijay Shankar, Xiuping Jiang

Open Access Publishing Fund

Listeria monocytogenes is a leading foodborne pathogen that can contaminate fresh produce in farm environment, resulting in deadly outbreaks. Composts contain a diversity of microorganisms, and some of them may be compost-adapted competitive exclusion microorganisms against L. monocytogenes. To understand interactions between compost microflora and the pathogen, both dairy- and poultry-wastes based composts (n = 12) were inoculated with L. monocytogenes, and then analyzed by next-generation sequencing approaches along with culturing methods. DNA extraction and enumeration of L. monocytogenes were performed at 0 and 72 h post-incubation at room temperature. The major bacterial phyla were identified as Firmicutes (23%), Proteobacteria …
