Diy Connections And Collaborations: Mid-West To North-East, Ciarán Ryan Jul 2022

Diy Connections And Collaborations: Mid-West To North-East, Ciarán Ryan

Irish Communication Review

Alternative music cultures can be found in various Irish cities and towns outside of the capital Dublin. These scenes may retain their own local idiosyncrasies, but those subscribing to do-it-yourself (DIY) ideals in Ireland are clearly influenced by sounds and styles from further afield. As punk mutated into different forms from the 1980s onwards, political and musical cues came from the countries to the East and West of Ireland - hardcore (Fairchild, 1995) from the United States, and anarcho-punk (Dines, 2004) from Britain. The DIY aesthetics of the early punk movements have since translated to numerous music genres and practices …

Full-Text Retrievals And Ebsco Discovery Service: Assessing Usage Of E-Journals Across Multiple Platforms, Simon Robins

Roesch Library Faculty Publications

This study utilizes COUNTER 5 data from the University of Dayton (UD) to measure full-text retrievals of e-journal articles from five major academic journal publishers (Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Oxford, Wiley, and Springer). Usage data from these publishers’ e-journals within EBSCO is compared to the same content when accessed from publisher platforms such as Wiley Online Library or SpringerLINK. Building on previous studies that have largely focused on links (or referrals) from the library discovery layer to publisher platforms, this study analyzes usage of full text-articles stored within EBSCO Discovery Service and EBSCOhost subject databases to consider how these full-text …

Learning In The Time Of Covid: A Master's Portfolio, Julie Henling

Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects

The work included in this Master's Portfolio reflects the author's experience as a teacher and a student during the Covid-19 crisis and explores the need for instructional changes as a result of the pandemic. The first essay, "A Fresh Start: Sowing New Seeds of Assessment Strategies in K-12 Education After the Covid-19 Pandemic," explains how multimodal/new media assessment pedagogies can be adapted for a variety of educational settings (online, hybrid, and in-person) to assist student learning. The second piece, “Women and Rhetoric,” is a unit plan designed for an 11th grade classroom focused on rhetoric and analysis using speeches from …

We’Re All Historical Researchers Now: The Impact Of Dobbs On Legal Research Instruction, Olivia Smith Schlinck Jul 2022

We’Re All Historical Researchers Now: The Impact Of Dobbs On Legal Research Instruction, Olivia Smith Schlinck

Library Staff Online Writings

Congratulations, it’s July, which means you have officially survived what may very well be considered the most consequential Supreme Court term in the history of the United States. Simply existing in this country over the past few weeks (months? years?) feels like trying to swim through rapidly drying concrete. Avoiding the news is impossible if for no other reason than the direct impact so much of the news of late has on the job of a law librarian. Imagine teaching a legal research class at the end of this past SCOTUS sitting? I’ll spare you the image because I did, …

Two (Or More) For One: Identifying Classes Of Household Energy- And Water-Saving Measures To Understand The Potential For Positive Spillover, Angela Sanguinetti, Claire Mcilvennie, Marco Pritoni, Susan Schneider Jul 2022

Two (Or More) For One: Identifying Classes Of Household Energy- And Water-Saving Measures To Understand The Potential For Positive Spillover, Angela Sanguinetti, Claire Mcilvennie, Marco Pritoni, Susan Schneider

Pacific Faculty Work

A key component of behavior-based energy conservation programs is the identification of target behaviors. A common approach is to target behaviors with the greatest energy-saving potential. The concept of behavioral spillover introduces further considerations, namely that adoption of one energy-saving behavior may increase (or decrease) the likelihood of other energy-saving behaviors. This research aimed to identify and describe household energyand water-saving measure classes within which positive spillover is likely to occur (e.g., adoption of energy-efficient appliances may correlate with adoption of water-efficient appliances), and explore demographic and psychographic predictors of each. Nearly 1,000 households in a California city were surveyed …

A Mixed Method Approach To Understanding Team Members' Perspectives After Receiving Problem-Solving Training And Performance Feedback, Alexander Mark Julian Jul 2022

A Mixed Method Approach To Understanding Team Members' Perspectives After Receiving Problem-Solving Training And Performance Feedback, Alexander Mark Julian

Theses and Dissertations

While countless studies have collected data on the effectiveness of various problem- solving models, few have attempted to identify which components of the training process are helpful to participants. Two teacher teams consisting of seven participants were trained in an adapted version of the Team-initiated Problem Solving (TIPS) model, observed each meeting, and provided performance feedback regarding how well they had adhered to the model. A mixed method approach was used to collect quantitative data in the form of the teams' adherence to the TIPS model and qualitative data once successful adherence to the model had been shown. Researchers interviewed …

Coordinating Tiny Limbs And Long Bodies: Geometric Mechanics Of Lizard Terrestrial Swimming, Baxi Chong, Tianyu Wang, Eva Erickson, Philip J. Bergmann, Daniel I. Goldman Jul 2022

Coordinating Tiny Limbs And Long Bodies: Geometric Mechanics Of Lizard Terrestrial Swimming, Baxi Chong, Tianyu Wang, Eva Erickson, Philip J. Bergmann, Daniel I. Goldman

Biology

Although typically possessing four limbs and short bodies, lizards have evolved diverse morphologies, including elongate trunks with tiny limbs. Such forms are hypothesized to aid locomotion in cluttered/fossorial environments but propulsion mechanisms (e.g., the use of body and/or limbs to interact with substrates) and potential body/limb coordination remain unstudied. Here, we use biological experiments, a geometric theory of locomotion, and robophysical models to investigate body–limb coordination in diverse lizards. Locomotor field studies in short-limbed, elongate lizards (Brachymeles and Lerista) and laboratory studies of fully limbed lizards (Uma scoparia and Sceloporus olivaceus) and a snake (Chionactis occipitalis) reveal that body-wave dynamics …

Perceptions Of Accessibility From Museum Visitors Who Are Visually Impaired: A Case Study, Jennifer Fortuna Phd, Otrl, Claire Harrison, Abigail Eekhoff, Candice Marthaler, Megan Seromik, Stephanie Ogren Phd, Julia Vandermolen Phd, Ches

Masters Projects

For people with visual impairment, environmental features create barriers to inclusion and participation in public places such as museums. This study gathered direct feedback on accessibility from people with visual impairment to inform a major renovation at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. This study used a participatory action research design. Data collection included a guided walk and semi-structured interviews. A descriptive numerical summary and qualitative thematic analysis were used to summarize the results. Twelve participants were assigned to three categories of visual impairment: low vision, legally blind, and totally blind. The primary barriers to accessibility included inaccessible signage, lack of …

Digital Realness: Queer Intimacy In Contrapoints, William S. Beaman Jul 2022

Digital Realness: Queer Intimacy In Contrapoints, William S. Beaman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Digital media comprises a diverse ecology of creative genres, institutions, communities, platforms, and entrepreneurial businesses. Yet despite its practical association with variegated social forms, digital mediation as such is often theorized as a logic of homogenization, problematically obscuring its heterogeneously contested character. This article reconceives mediation as an irreducibly multi-scalar and heterogeneous infrastructure, recasting online activity as contested participation in wider social contexts. I am contributing to a counter tendency in media studies that methodologically treats digital forms as polysemic, ambiguous and contested, rather than necessarily homogenizing, in the context of specific cases. Drawing out the theoretical implications of this methodology …

Creating Receptive Spaces Within The Gallery: A Look Into The Role The Arts Has On Survivors Of Abuse And Its Contribution To The #Metoo Conversation, Tawny Skye Armus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Through the use of personal place and memory, the artist fosters environments in the gallery to navigate healing from trauma. By cultivating this type of space, survivors of trauma can begin to dissect and navigate through imagery of another survivor in order to visualize ways in which to navigate their own. The artist, Tawny Skye, begins to explore this route by recreating her bedroom in a public gallery. Inviting others to openly gaze at her work, she is bearing her trauma for the audience without directly triggering them with the graphic imagery which is known to cause discomfort, panic attacks, …

The Importance Of Co2 Recapture In The Co2 Concentrating Mechanism Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Ashwani Rai Jul 2022

The Importance Of Co2 Recapture In The Co2 Concentrating Mechanism Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Ashwani Rai

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the CO2 concentrating mechanism (CCM) of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and to develop a quick method for estimating the activity of carbonic anhydrases (CAs). The first project demonstrates that there are two almost identical mitochondrial CAs in C. reinhardtii, CAH4 and CAH5, that help to maintain photosynthesis and minimize the leak of CO2 generated by respiration and photorespiration. We used an RNAi approach to reduce the expression of CAH4 and CAH5 so that their physiological functions could be studied. RNAi mutants with low expression of CAH4 and CAH5 have impaired rates …

Victim Advocates’ Perception Of The Reluctance Of Sexual Assault Survivors Reporting, Nastasha Andrea Powers Jul 2022

Victim Advocates’ Perception Of The Reluctance Of Sexual Assault Survivors Reporting, Nastasha Andrea Powers

Theses and Dissertations

Within the United States of America, more than half of all violent crimes go unreported (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2021). Failure to report to the police is a particular problem in cases of sexual assault and other forms of sexual violence. These crimes can carry a stigma that deters disclosure to both formal and informal sources. To better understand underreported sexual assault crimes, it is essential to look at the specifics of reporting. Data from victim advocates, who are practitioners who work with victims daily, finds that many victims of sexual violence never report the incidents to the criminal justice …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study assessed the influence of information sources on farmers’ indigenous knowledge on soil fertility management in Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select one hundred and eighty respondents and the instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of simple frequency and percentage. The findings show that majority of the farmers sampled were female 57.2%, single 50.5%; and tertiary education 39.5%. The result on the sources of farmers’ information about soil fertility management indicated that television was 31.7%, and social media accounted for 31.1% of the total respondents while extension agents accounted …

The Experiences Of Older Formerly Incarcerated Adults In A Specialized Reentry Program During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Robin O'Hanlon, Jessica Broome Jul 2022

The Experiences Of Older Formerly Incarcerated Adults In A Specialized Reentry Program During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Robin O'Hanlon, Jessica Broome

Publications and Research

A growing area of concern among prison reform advocates and human rights activists is the “greying prison population” or the continuous, unified growth in the number of older incarcerated individuals. Older individuals experience an accelerated aging process while incarcerated, but are less likely to reoffend upon release. While the aging prison population has in recent years become a focus of criminological and gerontological scholars, the lived experience of older formerly incarcerated individuals during the reentry process remains understudied. Using a qualitative approach, this cohort study seeks to further elucidate the unique needs, beliefs, and perceptions of this population within the …
