Screening Soybean Cultivars For Resistance To Aerial Blight Caused By Rhizoctonia Solani Ag1-Ia, Kensy D. Rodriguez-Herrera Jul 2022

Screening Soybean Cultivars For Resistance To Aerial Blight Caused By Rhizoctonia Solani Ag1-Ia, Kensy D. Rodriguez-Herrera

LSU Master's Theses

Aerial blight, caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani AG1-IA, is an economically important soybean disease in the mid-South. The same pathogen also infects other crops commonly rotated with soybeans like rice, corn, and grain sorghum. Rhizoctonia solani AG1-IA is difficult to manage because of its soilborne nature and the production of long-term survival structures, sclerotia. Management has relied on fungicide applications during the season. Still, there is an increasing prevalence of resistance to commonly used strobilurin fungicides and an urgent need to identify soybean cultivars resistant to aerial blight. Since the patchy distribution of the pathogen complicates field cultivar screening, …

Proactive Union And Teacher Strategies For Shaping Technology In Education, Thomas A. Kochan Jul 2022

Proactive Union And Teacher Strategies For Shaping Technology In Education, Thomas A. Kochan

New England Journal of Public Policy

Artificial intelligence and related technologies will have profound effects on the future of work in all industries and occupations, including education. But technology has no predetermined effects. How it will change work, working conditions, and the performance of organizations depends on who participates in the key decisions that (1) define the problems technology is asked to solve, (2) set the design parameters that shape specific applications, (3) link new technologies and work processes, (4) ensure that the workforce is well-prepared to use advanced technologies, (5) determine who controls the data generated by these tools, and (6) address the needs of …

Crafting An Innovation Ecosystem That Works For Working People, Amanda Ballantyne, Patrick Woodall, Katie Corrigan, Edward Wytkind Jul 2022

Crafting An Innovation Ecosystem That Works For Working People, Amanda Ballantyne, Patrick Woodall, Katie Corrigan, Edward Wytkind

New England Journal of Public Policy

The rapid pace and expanding scope of technological change is reshaping work and the workplace. These innovations can benefit workers by improving safety, reducing physical or repetitive burdens, or creating new types of jobs. But automation and new technologies can also eliminate workers, deskill occupations, reduce autonomy and job satisfaction, and erode economic stability for working families that contribute to the rising economic and racial inequality. These technologies do not fall from the sky; they are incubated in an innovation ecosystem shaped by public policy and public-research funding that is driven largely by an oligopoly of Big Tech companies and …

Does Well-Being Moderate The Association Of Harm Avoidance With Cognitive Decline, Christopher Reed Jul 2022

Does Well-Being Moderate The Association Of Harm Avoidance With Cognitive Decline, Christopher Reed

LSU Master's Theses

The Dual-Factor Model of mental health highlights the need to consider both constructs associated with psychopathology and subjective well-being in relation to clinical outcomes. Harm avoidance, which is associated with behavioral inhibition, has been negatively associated with cognitive change. While subjective well-being has been positively associated with cognition. The current study aimed to examine both constructs in a single model to examine well-being as a moderator of the association of harm avoidance with cognitive decline. A sample of 728 older adults from the Rush University Memory and Aging Project was used. Participants completed batteries of questionnaires and neuropsychological tests at …

Intracellular Parasite Toxoplasma Exploits The Unfolded Protein Response To Acquire Mitochondrial Metabolites, Ethan J. Funke, Leonardo Da Silva Augusto Jul 2022

Intracellular Parasite Toxoplasma Exploits The Unfolded Protein Response To Acquire Mitochondrial Metabolites, Ethan J. Funke, Leonardo Da Silva Augusto

Posters: 2022 Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that reconfigures its host cell to promote pathogenesis. Toxoplasma is able to infect virtually all warm-blooded animals, and it is estimated that this parasite has infected nearly 2 billion people globally and approximately 25% of the US population. Curiously, upon infection Toxoplasma recruits the host cell’s endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria into close proximity to the parasitophorous vacuole (PV), although the reasons for these high affinity interactions are not completely understood. It has been shown that Toxoplasma induces host mitochondria elongation to acquire fatty acids and establish a niche for itself. Our exciting …

Capturing Sustainability Goals In City Logistics: A Delphi Approach To Develop Sustainability Indicators, Xu Zhang, Eoin Plant, Nikolaos Valantasis Kanellos

Conference Papers

Purpose of this paper: ‘Sustainability’ as a phenomenon is difficult to define and sense (Meadows,1998). Sustainable city logistics is a concept with many subjective interpretations by different actors in the urban freight transport ecosystem (Behrends et al., 2008). Developing useful metrics to measure sustainability performance and impact in city logistics is challenging as there are many uncertainties and multiple stakeholders’ interests to consider. Selecting the indicators is also a complicated task because of the numerous variables used in literature and the variety of KPIs reported by logistics companies in their sustainability reports.

Extant research studies have proposed different frameworks …

The Relationship Between Family Environment And Specific Phobias, Jerrica Renee Guidry

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Specific phobias are the most prevalent disorder among adults and highly common among children. Additionally, specific phobias diagnosed in childhood has been associated other serious mental illnesses later in life (de Vrie et al., 2019). Research pertaining to parenting factors associated with anxiety disorders has been extensive, including parental psychopathology, parent-child relationships, parental control, and parental stress. However, less emphasis has been placed on familial factors which may contribute to the development and maintenance of specific phobias. According to the limited literature focusing on the family factors associated with specific phobias, parent psychopathology and parent over-control are important factors. Multiple …

Age-Related Changes In Diffuse Optical Tomography Sensitivity Profiles From Childhood To Adulthood, Xiaoxue Fu Ph.D., John E. Richards Jul 2022

Age-Related Changes In Diffuse Optical Tomography Sensitivity Profiles From Childhood To Adulthood, Xiaoxue Fu Ph.D., John E. Richards

Faculty Publications

Significance: Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) uses near-infrared light spectroscopy to measure changes in cerebral hemoglobin concentration. Anatomical interpretations of the brain location that generates the hemodynamic signal require accurate descriptions of the DOT sensitivity to the underlying cortex. DOT sensitivity profiles are different in infants compared with adults. However, the descriptions of DOT sensitivity profiles from early childhood to adulthood are lacking despite the continuous head and brain development.

Aim: We aim to investigate age-related differences in DOT sensitivity profiles in individuals aged from 2 to 34 years with narrow age ranges of 0.5 or 1 year.

Approach: We implemented …

Ethical Pluralism: The Decision-Making System Of A Complex World, Clinton P. Unger Jul 2022

Ethical Pluralism: The Decision-Making System Of A Complex World, Clinton P. Unger

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Today's leaders are faced with many different ethical decisions that are further highlighted by social media and a rapid news cycle. It has been established that there is no universal ethical code, nor is there one unified global culture. Leaders must continually educate themselves and their employees in proper leadership techniques, education, decision-making, and cultural understanding. Pluralism is engrained in ethics, where there are different interpretations of the same information, different ways to analyze the situation and different ethical frameworks. Pluralism can lead to different outputs and decisions across the same situation, but pluralism is not a blight on ethics …

This article asserts that the answer to our current labor crisis may not be as challenging as it appears if management will apply an old theory (Job Characteristics Model) to our contemporary workforce challenges. The article illustrates the key dimensions of the model and provides specific leadership recommendations for applying the JCM model to our current employment environment. Finally, the article also asserts that a new employee-centric style of leadership that requires a shift in leadership values and mindset is necessary to address the labor shortage and that JCM is a useful tool to facilitate that transition.

One such view was contemplated through “the five lenses through which to view ethics that he had been taught in b-school: fairness & justice, utilitarian, rights, community good, and virtue. Arguments could be made for the application of several of these perspectives in this situation.” The lasting thought is whether an ethical imperative of competency is required to running a lasting business.
