Affordable Housing: A National Crisis Fueled By The Coronavirus • A New Jersey Perspective, Latino Action Network Foundation
Center for Urban Policy Research
The Latino Action Network Foundation [LANF], its sister organization the Latino Action Network [LAN] and longtime ally, the Fair Share Housing Center [FSHC], have collaboratively monitored affordable housing issues in New Jersey for more than a decade. As part of its ongoing work, LANF sponsored a housing roundtable on September 10, 2021, to assess the affordable housing situation in the state and offer policy recommendations. At that time, a coalition of advocates, including the three organizations named above, were fresh from a legislative victory that safeguarded tenants unable to pay their rents during the pandemic and gave them a degree …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Reading is the core of knowledge and educational success, but it demonstrates a decline among the current young adult population. The present study uses a qualitative approach in the form of semi-structured interviews to study the reading habits of 10 Indian young adults aged 19-24. Interpretative phenomenological analysis revealed three superordinate themes: attitudes towards reading, perceived benefits of reading, and impediments to reading. Findings are consistent with previous literature and can be applied in academic and professional settings and social structures to improve the reading habits of Indian young adults. Future researchers are encouraged to determine strategies for enhancing reading …

Unique ethical, privacy and safety implications arise for people who are reliant on home-based smart technology due to health conditions or disabilities. In this paper we highlight a need for a reflective, inclusive ethical framework that encompasses the life cycle of smart home technology. We present key ethical considerations for smart home technology for older adults and people with disabilities and argue for ethical frameworks which combine these key considerations with existing models of design and development.

On 15 July 2022, the Delhi High Court, in Ms X v The Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Department Government of NCT of Delhi (‘Ms X’), denied an unmarried woman permission to terminate her unwanted pregnancy at 23 weeks under Section 3 of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971. A week later, through an ad-interim order, the Supreme Court allowed the woman’s appeal against the Delhi High Court’s order, permitting termination as long as a Medical Board confirms that abortion is medically safe for the pregnant woman. In this post, I discuss both these orders, which differ …

It is well known that the properties of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSCs), such as their self-renewal ability and multipotency, are maintained through interactions with mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs). MSCs are rare cells that are present in the bone marrow and are useful for clinical applications due to their functional ability. To obtain the necessary number of cells, MSCs must be cultured to expand, but this causes a remarkable decrease in stem cell properties, such as multipotency and proliferation ability. In this study, we show that the c-Mpl signal, which is related to the maintenance of hematopoietic stem cells, has an …

In schools across the country and world, students enter classrooms with rich diversity in backgrounds, identities, and experiences. They speak hundreds of different languages, come from countries around the world, espouse nuanced cultural and gender identities, and have an array of abilities and interests. But texts in school and classroom collections continue to reflect the so-called mainstream with primarily White, English-dominant, cis-gendered characters without disabilities. Efforts have emerged on social media to encourage resources with relevance to children's lives, but teachers often struggle to make the case for their use in instruction. In this article, we provide a framework for …

Fluid-Structure Interaction With Kelvin-Voigt Damping And Quantized State Integration Methods, Rasika Lasantha Mahawattege
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The class of fluid-structure interaction models in the physical dimension d = 2,3 has been the object of intense mathematical studies in the past several years. In the case of static interface, justified to be appropriate for small, rapid oscillations of the structure, the typical configuration considers a structure – modeled by a d-dimensional wave-type equation –surrounded by a fluid –modeled by the d-dimensional dynamic Stokes equation involving pressure. Coupling takes place at the common interface of the two media where the individual equations evolve and is given by differential operators. Thus, the overall system provides a physical illustration of …

Mutant KRAS (KM), the most common oncogene in lung cancer (LC), regulates fatty acid (FA) metabolism. However, the role of FA in LC tumorigenesis is still not sufficiently characterized. Here, we show that KMLC has a specific lipid profile, with high triacylglycerides and phosphatidylcholines (PC). We demonstrate that FASN, the rate-limiting enzyme in FA synthesis, while being dispensable in EGFR-mutant or wild-type KRAS LC, is required for the viability of KMLC cells. Integrating lipidomic, transcriptomic and functional analyses, we demonstrate that FASN provides saturated and monounsaturated FA to the Lands cycle, the process remodeling oxidized phospholipids, such as PC. Accordingly, …

The capacity to efficiently deliver the gene-editing enzyme complex to target cells is favored over other forms of gene delivery as it offers one-time hit-and-run gene editing, thus improving precision and safety and reducing potential immunogenicity against edited cells in clinical applications. Here we performed a proof-of-mechanism study and demonstrated that a simian adenoviral vector for DNA delivery can be repurposed as a robust intracellular delivery platform for a functional Cas9/guide RNA (gRNA) complex to recipient cells. In this system, the clinically relevant adenovirus was genetically engineered with a plug-and-display technology based on SpyTag003/SpyCatcher003 coupling chemistry. Under physiological conditions, an …

An important factor that drives cloud computing costs is the cost of constructing and maintaining data centers. This disclosure describes techniques to arrange the data center floor layout to achieve high compute power per square foot. Server racks are arranged in the form of islands of an archipelago. An island of the archipelago has at its center a hot aisle surrounded by eight compute racks, to achieve a rack:hot-aisle ratio of 8:1 (approximately four times more efficient than the 2:1 ratio of current layouts). Aisles between the islands are cold aisles. The archipelago configuration can provide higher compute power per …

To control thermal runaway in PCIe, SATA, and similar interfaces, the maximum drawable power from a slot is limited. The increasingly bursty load (including CPUs, ASICs, motors on HDDs, etc.) on the PCIe/SATA slot demands such power that the electrical design power (EDP) can be much larger than thermal design power (TDP). When this happens, the slot power specification can limit the performance of the load, and the datacenter power supply design needs to be overprovisioned for the EDP, if it can last long enough. This disclosure describes techniques of local energy storage that enable riding through EDP power excursions …
