Background: Adding additional bicycle and pedestrian paths to an area can lead to improved health outcomes for residents over time. However, quantitatively determining which areas benefit more from bicycle and pedestrian paths, how many miles of bicycle and pedestrian paths are needed, and the health outcomes that may be most improved remain open questions.

Objective: Our work provides and evaluates a methodology that offers actionable insight for city-level planners, public health officials, and decision makers tasked with the question “To what extent will adding specified bicycle and pedestrian path mileage to a census tract improve residents’ health outcomes over time?” …

Chromosome Number Evolution, Phylogeography, And The Effects Of Climate Change On Species Distributions In Polyploid Plant Systems, Courtney H. Babin Aug 2022

Chromosome Number Evolution, Phylogeography, And The Effects Of Climate Change On Species Distributions In Polyploid Plant Systems, Courtney H. Babin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Polyploidy, a term used to describe organisms with cells having more than two paired sets of chromosomes, is a significant driver of diversification among land plants. Over a century of research has advanced our understanding of polyploidization in some taxa, but polyploid organisms remain understudied. In this dissertation, I investigate chromosome number evolution, phylogeographic structure, genetic differentiation, and the effects of climate change on ploidy level distribution using polyploid plant systems. In the first chapter, I inferred a molecular phylogeny of Allium, an economically important genus that includes cultivated crops and ornamentals, to investigate evolutionary transitions in chromosome number …

Protein-Protein Interaction Prediction From Language Of Biological Coding, Nayan Howladar Aug 2022

Protein-Protein Interaction Prediction From Language Of Biological Coding, Nayan Howladar

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Protein-protein interactions in a cell are essential to the characterization and performance of various fundamental biological processes. Due to the tedious, resource-expensive, and time-consuming experimental processes, computational techniques to solve protein pair interaction difficulties have emerged as an active research area in bioinformatics. This research seeks to develop an innovative machine learning-based technique that predicts the interaction of a protein pair based on carefully selected input features and exploits information-rich evolutionary information. We developed a protein-protein interaction predictor, PPILS, that leverages the evolutionary knowledge from the protein language model. We examined several distinct neural network architectures: CNN+LSTM, Transformer, Encoder-Decoder, and …

Synthesis, Derivatives, And Applications Of Structured Nanomaterials, Md Shahidul Islam Khan Aug 2022

Synthesis, Derivatives, And Applications Of Structured Nanomaterials, Md Shahidul Islam Khan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Nanomaterials offer abundant applications not accessible in regular bulk structures. A nanotubular structure (nanoscroll or nanotube) is a 1D architecture with distinct properties varying from that of the parent material. The new structure for example provides more surface area and presents more active sites on the structure exterior, interior, or edges. In this research, different nanotubular materials were targeted including nanopeapods (NPPs), nanoscrolls (NScs), and their various derivatives.

Halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were used as pod materials to grow noble metal NPs in their lumen. The synthesis was done rapidly, within 2 minutes at 55 ⸰C. This allows the growth …

Auditory Cortical Differences In Children And Adolescents With Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, Amanda I. Rowan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

People with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) have a complex neurodevelopmental disorder with severe medical, cognitive, and psychiatric challenges including increased risk for developing a psychotic disorder in adulthood. The origins of this risk are not fully understood but atypical brain development is well documented. Hearing loss is also common in this population, yet little is known about the interaction between medical symptoms such as chronic ear infections and hearing loss with brain development in regions implicated in the etiopathology of schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SCZ). The present study used structural magnetic resonance imaging to measure auditory cortical regions of interest …

Messaging And Action Around Race And Inclusion At A Predominantly White Institution: Perceived Dissonance Of Black, Indigenous, And People Of Color Students, Gabriel M. Velez, Jody E. Jessup-Anger

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

As college has increasingly become part of emerging adulthood for United States youth, Predominantly White and Historically White Institutions (PWI/HWIs) have faced pressures to diversify and address problematic racial/ethnic campus climates. Within the rich and evolving literature, there is room for better understanding how Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) emerging adults experience institutional messaging. This report draws on environmental press and meaning making to explore this experience for 21 BIPOC students at an urban, Midwestern PWI/HWI. In focus groups, students highlighted the role of the university’s messaging around race/ethnicity and inclusion as problematic: negative descriptions about the urban …

The heart, the first organ to develop in the embryo, undergoes complex morphogenesis that when defective results in congenital heart disease (CHD). With current therapies, more than 90% of patients with CHD survive into adulthood, but many suffer premature death from heart failure and non-cardiac causes1. Here, to gain insight into this disease progression, we performed single-nucleus RNA sequencing on 157,273 nuclei from control hearts and hearts from patients with CHD, including those with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and tetralogy of Fallot, two common forms of cyanotic CHD lesions, as well as dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathies. We …

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

In this article for the 40th Anniversary of the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing (JPPM), the authors first share what is meant by “policy,” “public policy,” and “marketing and public policy” for researchers in our field. The authors then offer examples of JPPM research informing policy across different stages of the policy-making process: problem identification, agenda setting, policy formulation, budgeting, implementation, and evaluation. They also discuss important sources of public policy (e.g., federal, state, and international agencies; self-regulation; the courts; nonprofits; society; industry standards; company policies; personal ethics) and their role in the marketing and public policy …

Systematic Overexpression Of Genes Encoded By Mycobacteriophage Waterfoul Reveals Novel Inhibitors Of Mycobacterial Growth, Danielle Heller, Isabel Amaya, Aleem Mohamed, Ilzat Ali, Dmitri Mavrodi, Padraig Deighan, Viknesh Sivanathan

Faculty Publications

Bacteriophages represent an enormous reservoir of novel genes, many of which are unrelated to existing entries in public databases and cannot be assigned a predicted function. Characterization of these genes can provide important insights into the intricacies of phage–host interactions and may offer new strategies to manipulate bacterial growth and behavior. Overexpression is a useful tool in the study of gene-mediated effects, and we describe here the construction of a plasmid-based overexpression library of a complete set of genes for Waterfoul, a mycobacteriophage closely related to those infecting clinically important strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and/or Mycobacterium abscessus. The arrayed …

A Microfluidics-Based Approach For Isolation Of Antigen-Specific Cd8+ T Cells, Meredith Frank Aug 2022

A Microfluidics-Based Approach For Isolation Of Antigen-Specific Cd8+ T Cells, Meredith Frank

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Cancer is a global epidemic: there are predicted to be 200 million new cases this year alone. Almost a quarter of all cancer-related deaths are caused by lung cancer, for which 5-year survival rates are just above 20%. 85% of lung cancer diagnoses are classified as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) for which 5-year survival rates in metastatic disease are less than 10%. Early detection and targeted therapies have improved prognoses, yet relapse is still common among patients.

Immunotherapies that leverage tumor-specific CD8+ cytotoxic T cells have shown great promise for the treatment of NSCLC. However, although highly promising, …

Homeostasis Of Cell Wall Integrity Pathway Phosphorylation Is Required For The Growth And Pathogenicity Of Magnaporthe Oryzae, Yongchao Cai, Xinyu Liu, Lingbo Shen, Nian Wang, Yangjie He, Haifeng Zhang, Ping Wang, Zhengguang Zhang

School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications

The cell wall provides a crucial barrier to stress imposed by the external environment. In the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, this stress response is mediated by the cell wall integrity (CWI) pathway, consisting of a well-characterized protein phosphorylation cascade. However, other regulators that maintain CWI phosphorylation homeostasis, such as protein phosphatases (PPases), remain unclear. Here, we identified two PPases, MoPtc1 and MoPtc2, that function as negative regulators of the CWI pathway. MoPtc1 and MoPtc2 interact with MoMkk1, one of the key components of the CWI pathway, and are crucial for the vegetative growth, conidial formation, and virulence of M. …

Characterization Of Genetic Pathways Involved In Resistance To A Novel Antifungal Peptide, Kayla L. Haberman Aug 2022

Characterization Of Genetic Pathways Involved In Resistance To A Novel Antifungal Peptide, Kayla L. Haberman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Antibiotic resistance is increasing prevalence, particularly in Candida glabrata. This opportunistic pathogen is closely phylogenetically related to Saccharomyces cerevisiae; however, its characterization is limited. C. glabrata is only second to Candida albicans as a fungal pathogen in immunocompromised patients. Commonly resistant to azoles, the most common fungal therapy, it has become costly and challenging to treat. A histatin 5 derived antifungal peptide, KM29, has a high degree of efficacy in Candida species and S. cerevisiae. The objective of this work is to advance our understanding of the mechanism of action of KM29 against C. glabrata. Previous work in the lab …

Kinetic And Structural Characterization Of Pseudooxynicotine Amine Oxidase From Pseudomonas Putida S16, Vishakha Choudhary Aug 2022

Kinetic And Structural Characterization Of Pseudooxynicotine Amine Oxidase From Pseudomonas Putida S16, Vishakha Choudhary

Masters Theses

Our laboratory has previously shown that nicotine oxidoreductase (NicA2), a member of the flavin-containing amine oxidase family, uses a cytochrome c protein (CycN) as its electron acceptor rather than characteristically accepted molecular oxygen. Within the Pseudomonas putida S16 genome, the nicA2 gene forms an operon with cycN and pseudooxynicotine amine oxidase (pnao), another flavin containing amine oxidase enzyme. The first two steps in the nicotine catabolism pathway are catabolized by NicA2 and Pnao. Through redox chemistry, NicA2 converts nicotine to pseudooxynicotine and Pnao converts pseudooxynicotine to 3-succinoylsemialdehyde-pyridine. In this thesis, we characterize the kinetic and structural properties of …

Infidelity is an important topic of research due to the profound effects on the individual experiencing the trauma. Through the lens of bioecological systems and betrayal trauma, the impact of infidelity on mental health is examined in relation to the most proximal systems to an individual which include personality traits such as agreeableness and neuroticism as well as support from friends, family, and community. This research explores the hypotheses that more support leads to more positive mental health outcomes after the experience of infidelity and the possibility that support from friends, family, and community may buffer specific personality traits and …

Alt-Right Of The_Donald And Authoritarian Communists On Reddit: Internet Memes To Build Community, Joshua Hendricks Aug 2022

Alt-Right Of The_Donald And Authoritarian Communists On Reddit: Internet Memes To Build Community, Joshua Hendricks

Master's Theses

This project infuses Lacanian psychoanalysis further into the rhetorical study by exploring authoritarian discourses on Reddit. I analyze the alt-right community that found a home on the subreddit r/The_Donald and chart their discourse as it shaped from the quarantine to the establishment of an independent forum called TheDonald.win. I selected memes and the comments around them to build the analysis. The second aspect of this thesis examines authoritarian communist discourse on Reddit. The leftist community splintered when r/socialism banned a community member because the person made catgirl art. The ban sent shockwaves through the leftist community on Reddit and generated …

Validation In Vietnam: Motivations And Experiences Of Vietnam Veterans Who Returned To Vietnam As Tourists, Brian Washam Ii

Master's Theses

The current historiography on the memory of the Vietnam War has primarily looked at how the collective memory of the war has been constructed through various factors. Scholars such as Jerry Lembcke, Patrick Hagopian, and Marita Sturken tend to examine monuments, film, and oral histories to establish a basis for how the memory of the Vietnam War was constructed and how these legacies from the war shaped the U.S. as a society going forward. Recently, scholars have begun looking more at the return trips of veterans to Vietnam as a source for understanding how veterans remembered their service.

By engaging …

Ethical Behaviour And The Use Of Social Media By Undergraduates, University Of Ibadan., Tolulope Elizabeth Adenekan Phd, Ayomide Joy Lala

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The attraction of social media tools in higher education has been attributed to the affordances and participatory nature that the tools offer. For undergraduates in this generation, social networking has become an “addiction”. Ordinarily, a student who has a Facebook account opens the account daily to check new updates and spends hours studying new updates until he/she realizes that there are more important things to do like school work that has been missed because of logging in to a social platform. The research design adopted for the study is a descriptive survey. A multistage random sampling technique was used for …

State-Of-The-Art Review: Evidence On Red Meat Consumption And Hypertension Outcomes, Tara Shrout Allen, Harpreet S Bhatia, Alexis C Wood, Shabnam R Momin, Matthew A Allison

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Hypertension (HTN) is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including ischemic heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation. The prevalence of HTN, as well as mortality rates attributable to HTN, continue to increase, particularly in the United States and among Black populations. The risk of HTN involves a complex interaction of genetics and modifiable risk factors, including dietary patterns. In this regard, there is accumulating evidence that links dietary intake of red meat with a higher risk of poorly controlled blood pressure and HTN. However, research on this topic contains significant methodological limitations, which are described in …
