The protostome leucokinin (LK) signaling system, including LK peptides and their G protein-coupled receptors, has been characterized in several species. Despite the progress, molecular mechanisms governing LK peptide–receptor interactions remain to be elucidated. Previously, we identified a precursor protein for Aplysia leucokinin-like peptides (ALKs) that contains the greatest number of amidated peptides among LK precursors in all species identified so far. Here, we identified the first ALK receptor from Aplysia, ALKR. We used cell-based IP1 activation assays to demonstrate that two ALK peptides with the most copies, ALK1 and ALK2, activated ALKR with high potencies. Other endogenous ALK-derived peptides …

The Translation Of Learning About Person-Centredness Into Practice From A Community Nursing Preparation Programme, Caroline Dickson, Vaibhav Tyagi, Julie Churchill, Kristina Mountain
Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports
The study aimed to explore the implementation of learning into practice about person-centredness of post-registration student and qualified community and public health nurses who had undertaken, a professional and educational qualification within a person-centred curriculum framework. Drawing from existing literature, we hypothesised there would be significant positive changes in the knowledge and practice of person centredness in qualified nurses as compared with students. We further hypothesised, these changes will be most prominent in the constructs/domains - clarity of beliefs and values, care processes and care outcomes of the Person-centred Practice Framework (PCPF) (McCormack and McCance 2017).

Believing that the film industry is getting worse by utilizing simple plots and only emphasizing on the editing and the cosmetics, European filmmakers and theorists make their own style of realistic film movements as a reaction to Hollywood’s mainstream filmmaking style. One of which is the famed Dogme 95 Manifesto film movement in Denmark propagated by Lars von Trier. Dogme 95 Manifesto is a set of rules that needs to be followed by filmmakers in order to make a Dogme film. It is believed that by following this rule will restrain the filmmakers’ creativity, focusing more on the realism inside …

Do You Agree?: The Psychology And Legalities Of Assent To Clickwrap Agreements, Daniel D. Haun, Eric P. Robinson
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
When first accessing a website or online service, users are confronted with terms of service and privacy policies. These terms and policies are adhesion contracts which the user must accept to use the website or service. Virtually all users simply click “I agree” without reading the terms of these contracts. The law construes this as consent based on whether a “reasonable person” would understand that the click constitutes assent to those terms and policies. But studies show that various psychological factors such as obedience of authority can play a role in ill-informed acceptance of such contracts. This article argues that …

Multimodal Imaging Of Structural Concrete Using Image Fusion And Deep Learning, Sina Mehdinia
Multimodal Imaging Of Structural Concrete Using Image Fusion And Deep Learning, Sina Mehdinia
Dissertations and Theses
Concrete structures may be exposed to a variety of loads and environments during their service life. Non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques can be helpful in evaluating the condition of a structure. Imaging provides a visual representation of the interior of concrete and its condition non-destructively. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and ultrasonic echo array (UEA) using electromagnetic and stress waves, respectively, provide the data that can be used to reconstruct an image. In this PhD dissertation, image reconstruction and fusion algorithms, simulation, and a deep learning model were investigated with the goal to lay the foundation for enhanced imaging applications for concrete. …

Research focused on Identity Management (IDM) in the workplace has explored the experiences of people with many different stigmatized identities (e.g., sexual orientation, gender identity, race/ethnicity, religiosity); however, research has only recently begun to explore IDM of mental illness in the workplace. One such identity, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), has remained particularly unexplored. Individuals with mental illnesses, such as OCD, experience unique consequences with their concealment and disclosure process. Specifically, OCD has both cognitive and behavioral components, and, the behavioral component of OCD can demonstrate to coworkers visible actions that are seen as "not normal" or "awkward," potentially unintentionally signaling the …

“Viewed With Suspicion, Considered Idle And Mocked-Working Caregiving Fathers And Fatherhood Forfeits”, Jasmine Kelland, Duncan Lewis, Virginia Fisher
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Existing academic literature consistently points to a changing role for modern fathers in which they take an egalitarian role in the caregiving responsibilities for their children. Despite this, fathers are observed to continue to dominate the realms of full-time working, aligning to more traditional breadwinning mentalities than such trends might suggest, raising questions around inequality. Fathers at work have previously been found to encounter challenges within the workplace when they alter, or consider altering their work patterns due to caregiving responsibilities. Employing a sample of working parents and managers, this paper explores how caregiving fathers are perceived within organizations and …

Pepperdine Law Review
Larva Labs’ CryptoPunks NFTs are iconic. Created in 2017, they were among the first NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. Four years later, they are among the most valuable, selling for anywhere from $200,000 to millions of dollars. The CryptoPunks collection consists of 10,000 NFTs, each of which is associated with a unique CryptoPunks image. Everyone knows who owns each CryptoPunks NFT. The Ethereum blockchain provides indelible proof. But people disagree about who owns - and who should own - the copyright in the CryptoPunks images. Most CryptoPunks NFT owners believe they should own the copyright in the image associated with …

In their very first issue published on November 16, 1935, The Cowl staff explained the purpose of the novel student newspaper: “Primarily, the COWL exists to serve the student body, not simply as a news organ, but more fundamentally as a means to foster and intensify an enthusiatic Providence College spirit and loyalty.” Since its founding, The Cowl has attempted to be just that, reporting news and welcoming discussion and debate from members of its staff and members of the larger Providence College community.
Unfortunately, however, the mission of the College can, and often has, run contrary to the mission …

Communicating Across Eternal Divides: Conceptualizing Communicated Acceptance During Parent-Child Religious Difference, Toni Morgan, Jody Koenig Kellas
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Significant religious difference in the family has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. While religious difference may be challenging for families to negotiate, the manner in which family members communicate about it seems to be helpful in promoting positive interactions between parents and children. The purpose of this study was to conceptualize a parental communicated (non) acceptance continuum in the context of significant parent-child religious difference. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 44 adults who identified a significant religious difference with their parent. The results suggested that communicated (non)acceptance occurred along a continuum with four ranges of behaviors: communicated nonacceptance, ambivalence, …

Air Quality Health Benefits Of The Nevada Renewable Portfolio Standard, Alireza Rezaee, Lung-Wen Chen, Ge Lin, Mark P. Buttner, Max Gakh, Emma Frances Bloomfield
Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
In recent years, renewable portfolio standards (RPS), which require a certain percentage of electricity sold to consumers to come from renewable resources, have been established by many state governments to mitigate emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants in the United States. Nevada’s RPS set a target of 50% of electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030. By coupling the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s AVoided Emissions and geneRation Tool (AVERT) and CO–Benefits Risk Assessment (COBRA) model, this study assesses potential emission reductions from fossil fuels owing to this requirement and regional health benefits via improved air quality, as well …

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) adopted name, image and likeness (NIL) legislation in July 2021. The expectation was for all NCAA student-athletes to have the opportunity to seek compensation for their NIL, but the reality is quite different. International student-athletes are not easily able to benefit from their NIL due to restrictions placed on off-campus work under the terms of their entrance visas to the United States. This paper explores the need for the NCAA, NCAA member institutions, and government agencies to re-evaluate policies in an effort to ensure all student-athletes have the right to profit off their NIL. …

Wild Roots: Ginseng, Conservation, And Nature In The Appalachian South, Katherine Farley
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) is a medicinal plant native to eastern North America. Though the plant has a history of Indigenous use, wild American ginseng roots have been commercially harvested, primarily for export to east Asia, since the 18th century. There is a long history of harvesting ginseng in Appalachia as a source of supplementary income, as living-wage jobs in the region have historically been scarce. Today, harvesters can make hundreds of dollars per pound of dried, wild-harvested American ginseng roots. However, ginseng populations in the wild today are thought to be substantially smaller than their historical peak, which …
