Are Financial Institutions Tax Aggressive? Evidence From Corporate Tax Return Data, Subagio Efendi, Salim Darmadi, Robert Czernkowski Aug 2022

Are Financial Institutions Tax Aggressive? Evidence From Corporate Tax Return Data, Subagio Efendi, Salim Darmadi, Robert Czernkowski

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This study examines how financial firms’ tax aggressiveness differs from their peers in other sectors. Using confidential tax return data of the 5,968 largest Indonesian firms from 2009 to 2017, our study finds financial firms to have lower tax burdens relative to their non-financial counterparts, suggesting more opportunities for tax avoidance. Further, we document simultaneous use of tax shelters and temporary and permanent differences between accounting standards and tax laws, indicating a tendency to use the most sophisticated and less costly techniques in minimising tax burdens. These findings suggest tax aggressiveness may be one important unintended consequence of the government’s …

Sawer: Melampaui Ruang Dan Meluaskan Jangkauan Interaksi Pada Pertunjukan Dangdut, Michael H.B Raditya

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

This article deals with the issues of sawer that have appeared over time, both in live and online performances. This topic is interesting because sawer is intertwined in the interaction and participation of two active subjects, namely the singer and her audience. In live performances, the exchange between singers and their audiences happens in the same space and time. On the other hand, accommodating sawer in online dangdut performances is a challenge. However, in 2020 there was a lot of interaction and participation—and even sawer—in online shows. I believe this is not the first glimpse of this phenomenon because online …

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

Apart from its religious values, the hijab has currently developed into a lifestyle. The issue concerning the hijab in Indonesia has evolved over time with a fascinating complexity that is worth to be examined. The Indonesian people who have the habit of questioning the decision to wear or not to wear the hijab illustrates that the choice of Indonesian women is not considered as a personal matter. This research will discuss how the phenomenon of “questioning the decision to wear or not wear the hijab” is based on the epistemology of ignorance, which investigates and explains how ignorance is formed …

Central Bank Independence And Price Stability Under Alternative Political Regimes: A Global Evidence, Afees A. Salisu, Elias A. Udeaja, Silva Opuala-Charles

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

In this paper, we explore the connection between Central Bank Independence (CBI) and inflation under alternative political regimes. We formulate a predictive model that accommodates CBI in the analysis of inflation and thereafter we regroup the countries based on the choice of political regimes as well as the level of development. We find that CBI has a statistically significant and negative effect on inflation in countries adopting full democratic and partial autocratic regimes; but are statistically insignificant in countries operating full autocratic and partial democratic regimes. The results leading to this conclusion are robust to different levels of development.

Mechanisms Of Substrate Selectivity And Transport By Escherichia Coli Atp- Binding Cassette (Abc) Transporter Metni, Yuchun Chen Aug 2022

Mechanisms Of Substrate Selectivity And Transport By Escherichia Coli Atp- Binding Cassette (Abc) Transporter Metni, Yuchun Chen

Master's Theses

ABC transporters are central in many cellular functions including nutrient uptake, signal transduction membrane assembly, and cellular detoxification. Both structural and functional studies have revealed insights into the high-affinity uptake mechanism of the MetNI methionine ABC transporter. Using the energy from ATP binding and hydrolysis, the MetNI-Q system can import L-Met, D-Met, and other methionine derivatives against concentration gradients. Many mechanistic studies of ABC transporter propose a model in which cognate binding proteins sequester substrates in the periplasm and deliver them to the transporter. In contrast, recent in vivo and crystallographic studies of MetNI-Q suggest that some substrates may be …

Law Society Regulation And The Lawyer-Academic, Andrew Flavelle Martin Aug 2022

Law Society Regulation And The Lawyer-Academic, Andrew Flavelle Martin

Dalhousie Law Journal

Can, and should, law societies regulate and discipline lawyers for their teaching and research? This article explores these largely overlooked but critically important questions in order to establish a foundation for further debate and discussion by lawyers, legislators, and law societies. It argues that professionalism precludes only low-value teaching and research—teaching and research with little pedagogical or epistemic value such that it is unlikely or unworthy to be protected by academic freedom—and that any chilling effect on lawyer-academics comes as much from uncertainty as from actual danger of regulatory consequences. The author concludes that law societies and other stakeholders should …

Can Meaning In Life Mitigate The Effects Of Interpersonal Dimensions Of Suicidality On Suicidal Ideation, Greg Edgin Aug 2022

Can Meaning In Life Mitigate The Effects Of Interpersonal Dimensions Of Suicidality On Suicidal Ideation, Greg Edgin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Suicide is a serious and growing problem that has not been adequately explained by prior theories. The interpersonal theory of suicide (IPT) was derived to explain the progression of suicidality by positing that thwarted belongingness (TB) and perceived burdensomeness (PB), combined with hopelessness about these states (interpersonal hopelessness), lead to active suicidal ideation, which in turn leads to suicidal behaviors. However, no prospective tests of IPT hypotheses have utilized a measure of interpersonal hopelessness. Additionally, IPT neglects factors that may protect against or explain the progression of suicidality, such as meaning in life. The purpose of the current study was …

Through The Back Door: Unsettling And Witnessing The Transgenerational Trauma Paradigm With African American Women, Asia Tonja Marie Amos Aug 2022

Through The Back Door: Unsettling And Witnessing The Transgenerational Trauma Paradigm With African American Women, Asia Tonja Marie Amos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this study was to disrupt and challenge how research and representation of transgenerational trauma in the field of psychology perpetuates the elision and erasure of African American women's experiences. In social sciences and the medical field, African American women are often described within trauma studies as either silent sufferers of substance abuse and interpersonal violence or perpetrators of lateral violence, child abuse/neglect, etc., which dislocates their personhood and complex nuances of their experiences (e.g. Broussard, 2013; Ponton III, 2018; Ricks, 2018). This study critiques, decolonizes, and de-pathologizes transgenerational trauma transmission (TTT) by using Black feminist intersectional and …

Contribution Of Orbitofrontal Cortex Activity To Risky Decision-Making, Daniel Bradley Karmiol Gabriel Aug 2022

Contribution Of Orbitofrontal Cortex Activity To Risky Decision-Making, Daniel Bradley Karmiol Gabriel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this dissertation, I recorded individual neuronal activity from the lateral orbitofrontal cortex of awake, freely moving animals as they behaved in a punishment-based risky decision-making task. In this risky decision-making task, subjects chose between a small food reward and a large food reward associated with either a 0% or 50% risk of a concurrent punishment in the form of a mild footshock. As the risk of punishment increased, subjects reduced choice of the large reward. To fully dissect the neuronal underpinnings throughout the decision-making process, I designed the behavioral paradigm to contain three distinct stages: deliberation, choice selection, and …

Public Access To Online Hearings, Jérémy Boulanger-Bonnelly

Dalhousie Law Journal

The open court principle faced a significant challenge when courthouses closed their doors to limit the spread of COVID-19. The shift to online hearings in many jurisdictions generated new avenues for public access but also raised concerns for the privacy and security of individuals, and for the administration of justice. Building on existing principles and a review of the measures adopted by courts in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia during the pandemic, this paper seeks to identify best practices to preserve an appropriate balance between openness and competing interests in the online environment. It concludes that …
