Rtpltool: A Software Tool For Path Loss Modeling In 5g Outdoor Systems, Ci̇han Bariş Findik, Özlem Özgün

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The increase in the required bandwidth along with the global growth of existing wireless communication systems is one of the major reasons why research and industry communities are exploring 5G and millimeter-wave frequencies. The advantages of millimeter wave frequencies for 5G applications are a wide range of accessible and unlicensed spectrum, the use of small antennas in RF applications with increasing frequency, and low losses due to the interference effects compared to the currently used frequency bands. However, due to some computational challenges especially at millimeter waves (i.e. in FR2 frequency band), it is necessary to develop efficient software tools …

Bi-Allelic Letm1 Variants Perturb Mitochondrial Ion Homeostasis Leading To A Clinical Spectrum With Predominant Nervous System Involvement, Jdc Pereira Baptista Sep 2022

Bi-Allelic Letm1 Variants Perturb Mitochondrial Ion Homeostasis Leading To A Clinical Spectrum With Predominant Nervous System Involvement, Jdc Pereira Baptista

Peninsula Medical School

Leucine zipper-EF-hand containing transmembrane protein 1 (LETM1) encodes an inner mitochondrial membrane protein with an osmoregulatory function controlling mitochondrial volume and ion homeostasis. The putative association of LETM1 with a human disease was initially suggested in Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, a disorder that results from de novo monoallelic deletion of chromosome 4p16.3, a region encompassing LETM1. Utilizing exome sequencing and international gene-matching efforts, we have identified 18 affected individuals from 11 unrelated families harboring ultra-rare bi-allelic missense and loss-of-function LETM1 variants and clinical presentations highly suggestive of mitochondrial disease. These manifested as a spectrum of predominantly infantile-onset (14/18, 78%) and variably progressive …

This case report describes a girl who presented antenatal arthrogryposis and postnatal hypotonia, generalized and respiratory weakness, joint deformities particularly affecting the lower limbs and poor swallow. By 5 months, cataracts, abnormal electroretinograms, visual evoked potentials and global developmental impairments were recognized. No causative variants were identified on targeted gene panels. After her unexpected death at 11 months, gene-agnostic trio whole exome sequencing revealed a likely pathogenic de novo BICD2 missense variant, NM_001003800.1, c.593T>C, p.(Leu198Pro), confirming the diagnosis of spinal muscular atrophy lower extremity predominant type 2 (SMA-LED2). We propose that cataracts and abnormal electroretinograms are novel features of …

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in the United States, affecting approximately 1 in 10 adults, and its prevalence is expected to rise as the population ages. Treatment options for AF are limited; moreover, the development of new treatments is hindered by limited (1) knowledge regarding human atrial electrophysiological endpoints (e.g., conduction velocity [CV]) and (2) accurate experimental models. Here, we measured the CV and refractory period, and subsequently calculated the conduction wavelength, in vivo (four subjects with AF and four controls), and ex vivo (atrial slices from human hearts). Then, we created an in vitro model of …

Is Your C-Suite Risk Literate?, Jason Bergner, Joshua J. Filzen Sep 2022

Is Your C-Suite Risk Literate?, Jason Bergner, Joshua J. Filzen

Accountancy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Managing risk effectively is essential for business success, and thus understanding risk is vital for business executives. Effective risk management increases firm value, whereas poor risk management will damage shareholder wealth. In this article, we examine the risk literacy of business executives and find significant variation among the leaders we sample. Our findings suggest that business executives would be well served to evaluate their own risk literacy, and remediate, if necessary; to work to increase risk literacy in the company’s employees; and to include risk literacy as an important and routine part of the firm’s overall culture. Because the importance …

Beyond True And False: Fake News And The Digital Epistemic Divide, Gilad Abiri, Johannes Buchheim Sep 2022

Beyond True And False: Fake News And The Digital Epistemic Divide, Gilad Abiri, Johannes Buchheim

Michigan Technology Law Review

The massive fact-checking, flagging, and content removal campaigns run by major digital platforms during the 2020 elections and the Covid-19 pandemic did some good. However, they failed to prevent substantial portions of the population from believing that the election was stolen or that vaccinations are dangerous.

In this Article, we argue that the reason for the ineffectiveness of truth-based solutions—such as fact-checking— is that they do not reach the heart of the problem. Both scholars and policymakers share the implicit or explicit belief that the rise of digital fake news is harmful mainly because it spreads false information, which lays …

Strategic Disclosure And Debt Covenant Violation, Thomas Bourveau, Derrald Stice, Rencheng Wang Sep 2022

Strategic Disclosure And Debt Covenant Violation, Thomas Bourveau, Derrald Stice, Rencheng Wang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study examines how managers change their forecasting behavior as a debt covenant violation approaches. Using a sample of firms that disclose a debt covenant violation (DCV) in their financial statements, we find that management forecasts are more optimistic in the period leading up to a DCV, and this result is not driven by managers’ unintentional forecast bias. Additionally, we find that managers who are more optimistic in their forecasts also take on more risk and increase dividend payouts before violations, consistent with managers strategically using earnings forecasts to justify their activities favorable to shareholders but likely to be curtailed …

Developing And Validating A Scale Of Tourism Gentrification In Rural Areas, Chaohui Wang, Yumei Xu, Tingting Zhang

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In recent years, tourism gentrification has made great progress in rural areas and has had significant impacts on these areas' development, specifically in the domains of the economy, living standards, community, culture, and environment. Tourists play a key role in developing tourism gentrification in rural areas, but research investigating tourism gentrification in rural areas from the tourist perspective is scarce. To fill this gap, we focus on tourism gentrification and develop a measurement scale from the tourist perspective through multiple qualitative and quantitative steps. Our findings confirm that tourism gentrification in rural areas from the tourist perspective comprises eight dimensions: …

The Future Of Destination Marketing Organizations In The Insight Era, Arthur Huang, Efren De La Mora Velasco, Adam Haney, Sergio Alvarez

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

There has been a growing interest in examining the implementation of insight-era technologies (e.g., AI, social media) and big data for sustainable tourism development. However, actionable guidelines to promote a holistic adaptation and the effective functioning of destination marketing/management organizations (DMOs) in the increasingly data-infused world are still needed. This perspective paper posits a research-based framework that DMOs can use to become more responsive and efficient in their marketing and planning efforts in the current AI-infused world. Four propositions are presented to support DMOs' transition to the insight-era: (a) DMOs' organizational adaptations and workforce development and training, (b) active engagement …

An Information-Production Theory Of Liability Rules, Jacob Assaf, Roy Shapira Sep 2022

An Information-Production Theory Of Liability Rules, Jacob Assaf, Roy Shapira

University of Chicago Law Review

The negligence-versus–strict liability debate is over in tort law, and negligence has clearly won. Yet the fact that our accident-compensation system is fault based continues to attract much opposition in popular sentiment and academic circles. Standard economic analysis views strict liability as preferable to negligence because it is easier to administer and leads to better risk reduction: strict liability induces injurers not only to optimally invest in precaution but also to optimally adjust their activity levels. Standard analysis thus views the prevalence of negligence as unjustifiable on efficiency grounds. This Article challenges the conventional wisdom and clarifies an efficiency rationale …

Geography, Niches, And Transportation Influence Bovine Respiratory Microbiome And Health, Jianmin Chai, Xinting Liu, Hunter Usdrowski, Feilong Deng, Ying Li, Jiangchao Zhao

Animal Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD), one of the most common and infectious diseases in the beef industry, is associated with the respiratory microbiome and stressors of transportation. The impacts of the bovine respiratory microbiota on health and disease across different geographic locations and sampling niches are poorly understood, resulting in difficult identification of BRD causes. In this study, we explored the effects of geography and niches on the bovine respiratory microbiome and its function by re-analyzing published metagenomic datasets and estimated the main opportunistic pathogens that changed after transportation. The results showed that diversity, composition, structure, and function of the bovine …

Regulation Weakness And Lack Of Public Awareness Has Impeded The Implementation Of Environmental Policies In Saudi Arabia, Nada Gurmalla Algamdy Sep 2022

Regulation Weakness And Lack Of Public Awareness Has Impeded The Implementation Of Environmental Policies In Saudi Arabia, Nada Gurmalla Algamdy

Dissertations & Theses

This research aimed to substantially illustrate that the weakness of environmental regulations and lack of public participation in urban planning alongside poor public awareness in Saudi Arabia has inhibited the implementation of environmental policies across this region. To study these issues, this research compared the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (“KSA”) to the United States (“US”) building on numerous studies to illustrate how the identified weaknesses correlate with weak or ineffective environmental policies. It is well known that it would be better to use a European country “because it's known that the EU has tough environmental measures" as a model for …

32329 Assessing The Utility Of Fontana-Masson And Mart-1 Stains In Evaluating Skin Pigmentary Changes Induced By Ultraviolet Radiation And Visible Light, Marissa Ceresnie, Indermeet Kohli, Ben J. Friedman, Henry W. Lim, Iltefat H. Hamzavi

Dermatology Meeting Abstracts

One of the observed effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and visible light (VL) on melanocompetent skin is increased pigmentation, also known as skin darkening or tanning. Many methods are used to measure skin pigment, including the Fontana-Masson stain (FMS) and MART-1 immunostain, which histologically highlight melanin and melanocyte density, respectively. While these approaches may be adequate in assessing baseline skin pigment among individuals of different races and phototypes, detecting the skin darkening induced by UVR and VL within the same individual is a challenge, especially in darker skin phototypes. We conducted a literature search and analyzed 16 articles comparing skin …
