Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cataract is a leading cause of vision impairment worldwide and are primarily caused by oxidative stress that damages and aggregates lens proteins, leading to lens opacification. However, the eye's anatomical barriers limit the penetration and bioavailability of antioxidant therapies. To address this challenge, a dendrimer-based nanogel with a built-in reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging capability developed by us was employed to deliver the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) to the lens. NAC was loaded into a generation-5 PEGylated poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (G5-PEG-TK, termed the GPT) nanogel. The resulting NAC-GPT was characterized for its ROS-scavenging activity, bioavailability, and corneal permeability. The efficacy of NAC-GPT was …

Exploring The Effect Of Counterstereotype And Perspective Taking In Reducing Bias And Promoting Empathy In Police, Sydney C. Timmer-Murillo, Keara Kangas, Nakia Gordon

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Racism in policing continues to be a serious issue in the United States (U.S.). While most efforts to reduce racism, focus on changing implicit (i.e., nonconscious) racial biases, other factors may also influence behavior. Intergroup emotion theory posits that emotions, especially empathy, may play a powerful role in changing behavior. In this study, using community-based participatory research design we created and tested a virtual reality (VR) experience designed to reduce implicit racial bias through perspective taking and counter-stereotypical information. Fifty-six police officers from a large city took part in the study. They completed questionnaires and an implicit association task (IAT) …

Expanding Traditional Literacy Frameworks: A Multiliteracies Approach In Elementary Classrooms, Caroline Cuenca Apr 2026

Expanding Traditional Literacy Frameworks: A Multiliteracies Approach In Elementary Classrooms, Caroline Cuenca

Doctoral Dissertations

Teaching literacy in elementary schools can provide students with a rich, meaningful, and engaging learning experience. Furthermore, cultivating a culturally responsive approach to teaching and learning can promote feelings of acceptance and belonging in young children (Comber, 2018). However, elementary educators are feeling increased pressure to emphasize literacy instruction with a sole focus on foundational literacy skills, standardized curriculum, and accountability measures (Unadkat & Ochoa, 2026). Unfortunately, these instructional practices often limit students' opportunities to engage in creative, collaborative, multimodal, and meaningful learning (Unadkat & Cuenca, 2025). This mixed-methods study examined how a critical multiliteracies curriculum was implemented in a …

This Article explores the Nicotine Free Generation ("NFG") policy, an emerging endgame strategy for tobacco products that employs a completely novel legal design. Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable death, killing almost half of its users and imposing $600 billion in social costs each year. We see two basic choices for regulating sales: prohibition or a legal age-gate, such as twenty-one, for retail sales. NFG charts a third way. Recognizing the dire harm of tobacco and the serious consequences of abrupt prohibition, NFG lays the groundwork for a gradual transition to a sales sunset. In place of the twenty-one …

The Human Right To A Healthy Environment: Corporate Responsibility In Critical Mineral Extraction, Erika George Apr 2026

The Human Right To A Healthy Environment: Corporate Responsibility In Critical Mineral Extraction, Erika George

Faculty Scholarship

This paper argues that the emerging human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment should guide the governance of critical minerals by incorporating the corporate responsibility to respect human rights throughout supply chains to ensure a racially just energy transition. It frames the climate crisis within the history and political economy of racial capitalism, contending that without rights-based guardrails, mineral supply chains risk reproducing the extractive harms and racialized disparities of the fossil fuel era, including labor abuses, displacement, water depletion, and violence disproportionately borne by racialized and Indigenous communities. Methodologically, the paper combines doctrinal analysis of international norms …

Emote - A Modular Action Figure For Childhood Emotional Growth, Terrence Li Apr 2026

Emote - A Modular Action Figure For Childhood Emotional Growth, Terrence Li

Theses

Emotional regulation and communication are one of the most important skills that we can learn. This skill allows us not only to recognize and effectively communicate our feelings to others but also allows us to recognize them in others. Although learning and recognizing these emotions may be a pursuit in which progress varies from person to person, this skill is especially invaluable to young children. Beginning as early as the age of 3, many children begin to show early awareness of their own emotions, such as reacting to discomfort or comfort, or starting to use words for feelings. This learning …

Targeting Unfairness, Omolara Bewaji Joseney Apr 2026

Targeting Unfairness, Omolara Bewaji Joseney

Vanderbilt Law Review

Companies often engage in racially targeted marketing practices whereby they target and tailor their advertisements to racially segmented consumer populations. As a result, a targeted racial group of consumers may receive advertisements for a product or service that is intentionally customized to appeal to them (a “pull”) or may be specifically untargeted or excluded from receiving advertisements as members of a nontargeted racial group (a “push”). This Article examines the marketing environment created by these pull-push dynamics as a consumer protection concern. Legal scholarship on targeted advertising has focused either on its risks to privacy due to the growing reliance …

Twitter, Tiktok, And Terrorism Torts: Using Product Liability To Hold Social Media Companies Accountable For Their Enablement Of Terrorism, Bailey Wilson Apr 2026

Twitter, Tiktok, And Terrorism Torts: Using Product Liability To Hold Social Media Companies Accountable For Their Enablement Of Terrorism, Bailey Wilson

Vanderbilt Law Review

Social media platforms have become powerful tools for terrorist organizations, allowing them to recruit and radicalize actors who incite violence. Yet victims of terrorist attacks have been unsuccessful in holding these platforms legally accountable. The Antiterrorism Act imposes a demanding proximate-cause standard, and Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act broadly shields platforms from liability as publishers of third-party content. Together, these doctrines create a nearly impenetrable barrier for plaintiffs seeking redress from companies that profit while their algorithms amplify terrorist propaganda and promote violence. This Note argues that product liability offers a path forward. Courts have increasingly recognized digital …

Cancer Detection System Using Binary Neural Network On Dna Based Architecture, Antar Narayan Chowdhury Apr 2026

Cancer Detection System Using Binary Neural Network On Dna Based Architecture, Antar Narayan Chowdhury

Theses

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is among the most durable chemical storage media, capable of encoding the fundamental instructions for protein synthesis (the central dogma). Each human cell contains a unique DNA sequence characterized by identifiable markers that facilitate pattern recognition. These molecular features offer significant potential for personalized drug development and disease identification. Recent advancements in DNA based research have demonstrated that fundamental arithmetic operations can be executed directly through molecular interactions, bypassing the need for silicon-based computational assistance. These biochemical applications can be further scaled to support Binary Neural Network (BNN) models, which are particularly well-suited for mitigating stochastic noise …

In-Context Retrieval For Molecules And Chemical Synthesis Pathways, Abhisek Dey Apr 2026

In-Context Retrieval For Molecules And Chemical Synthesis Pathways, Abhisek Dey

Theses

Contrastive learning methods require well-defined positive pairs, limiting their applicability to domains where complete, high-fidelity pairings are available. In practice, large-scale scientific corpora --including patents, publications, and web-scale data -- contain vast quantities of contextually relevant but incompletely paired samples that are discarded under standard training paradigms. In this work, we demonstrate that hard negative mining can be leveraged to construct pseudo-positive supervision signals from unpaired or partially paired data, enabling contrastive learning to exploit the full breadth of available corpora without sacrificing representational quality. Using a large-scale chemical drug patent corpus as a testbed, we train a cross-modal contrastive …

Toward Reliable Computational Social Science: Inconsistency-Aware Methods For Human Annotation And Ai Inference, Sujan Dutta Apr 2026

Toward Reliable Computational Social Science: Inconsistency-Aware Methods For Human Annotation And Ai Inference, Sujan Dutta

Theses

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly common in computational social science, \textit{inconsistency} has emerged as a key challenge. AI models often contradict themselves when given equivalent inputs, disagree with other models on the same data, and diverge from human judgments in seemingly opaque ways. Human annotators exhibit their own inconsistencies, both within individuals and across groups shaped by differing values and identities. Rather than treating these inconsistencies simply as noise, this dissertation argues that they contain meaningful signals that can be leveraged to improve learning efficiency, strengthen evaluation, and increase the reliability of large-scale social measurement. To study this phenomenon, …

Beyond The Launch: Designing Integrated Marketing Communications Across The Publishing Lifecycle, Philip J. Boutin Jr. Apr 2026

Beyond The Launch: Designing Integrated Marketing Communications Across The Publishing Lifecycle, Philip J. Boutin Jr.

AMTP Proceedings 2026

This paper advances a lifecycle view of integrated marketing communications for book publishing and specifies a practical model beyond launch. We present the Lifecycle IMC in Publishing (L-IMC) framework with four layers—strategic capability, orchestration, phased execution (pre-launch, launch, post-publication), and measurement/learning—grounded in evidence on carryover, cross-media complementarity, discoverability, and the creator economy. Seven propositions predict that lifecycle consistency, coordinated post-publication activity, metadata priming, creator–title fit with clear disclosures, network-aware seeding, continuous testing, and reserved reinforcement budgets improve visibility, conversion, and returns. Design principles include codified message architecture and governance, a vetted creator bench, managed discoverability, sequencing high-trust signals before conversion …

The lymphatic system is a highly branched endothelial tubular network that facilitates the migration of immune cells from the peripheral tissues to lymph nodes (LNs) and other lymphoid organs. Complement factors are essential for innate and adaptive immune functions. Complement anaphylatoxin C5a is crucial in vascular endothelial cell activation and lymphocyte polarization. Understanding the impact of C5a and its cognate receptor C5ar1 signaling on lymphatic function could provide new insights into the mechanisms of immune dysregulation observed in chronic inflammatory diseases. We demonstrate that acute C5a challenge in wildtype C57B6/J mice significantly reduced lymph propulsion compared to their C5ar1-deficient counterparts. …

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic, serious psychiatric disorder that affects 2%-3% of the population and is associated with high personal and societal costs. Genetic factors are estimated to explain roughly half the risk of developing OCD, and genomic studies are just beginning to identify common and rare genetic variants mediating this risk. A major goal of genomic studies is to yield insights into the etiology of OCD and identify molecular targets for the development of novel therapeutics. However, the overwhelming majority of subjects in existing genetic studies are of European ancestry, limiting the generalizability of these findings. To address …

“You Can’T Post That!”: Constitutionality Of Non-Disparagement Orders Barring Divorced Parents’ Social Media Posts, Kaitlyn B. Hammond Apr 2026

“You Can’T Post That!”: Constitutionality Of Non-Disparagement Orders Barring Divorced Parents’ Social Media Posts, Kaitlyn B. Hammond

Vanderbilt Law Review

When a marriage goes wrong, a court may use a non-disparagement order to prevent a party from speaking negatively about another in some way, either permanently or temporarily. Family courts often use non-disparagement orders to protect parties or their children from psychological harm during divorce or child-custody proceedings. In such cases, non-disparagement orders forbid parents from denigrating one another in front of their children and/or third parties. To protect the child, non-disparagement orders are often imposed upon both parents by the court. But courts do not always protect children and other parties from disparagement in this way. Although non-disparagement orders …

At the turn of the 20th century, magazines were becoming increasingly available to the middle class. Throughout the 1890–1930s, the industry put forth an entire new iteration of publications that came to be popular with female readers. One of the most successful publications from this period, The Ladies' Home Journal, distinguished itself through its strong editorial presence on the page. The editors of the Ladies' Home Journal intended to create a "traditional" female identity that reflected domesticity in the journal, which countered the rising notions of the New Woman. Simultaneously, the publication aimed to create an educational product with …

Lru Caching Policy Based On Naïve Bayes Ml Algorithm In Collaborative Peer-To-Peer Systems For Network Bandwidth Utilization, Waheed Yasin

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

Web caching offers several advantages, such as increasing cache hit rates, lowering the workload on origin servers, and minimizing network traffic. Nevertheless, limited cache capacity poses a major challenge in web caching systems. Moreover, repeatedly fetching same media objects from origin servers leads to unnecessary bandwidth consumption. Furthermore, traditional caching policies, including Least Recently Used (LRU), are vulnerable to cache pollution. This study introduces a collaborative caching policy based on the Naïve Bayes (NB) Machine Learning (ML) algorithm. The proposed policy exploits structured peer-to-peer architectures, allowing cache contents to be shared among peers to improve the efficiency of LRU web …
