A National Security Strategy For The Middle East, Vanessa Rice, Rudy Torres, Addy Horgan, Joy Omosa, Mark Westfall

School of Public Policy Capstones

This National Security Strategy addresses the persistent national security challenges the United States faces in the Middle East, a region vital for global energy supply, economic connectivity, and a source of anti-American extremism. Recognizing the failures of past "haphazard experimentation," the strategy proposes a thoughtful, pragmatic plan prioritizing five distinct and congruent interest areas: Maintaining Regional Access, Supporting Regional Stability, Ensuring Energy Security, Defending American Citizens and Personnel, and Preserving and Protecting Western Ideals. The strategy outlines actions such as: countering Chinese and Russian influence through intelligence sharing and defense incentives; containing Iran via a new, permanent nuclear deal and …

Social Media Engagement And Financial Performance In Apparel Retail, Emily M. Burke

Student Publications

As companies increasingly rely on social media to engage with consumers, questions remain about whether social media metrics translate into measurable financial outcomes. This study investigated whether changes in Instagram engagement metrics predicted financial performance among publicly traded apparel and lifestyle retail companies. Social media data, including the number of posts and average likes, were collected manually for February 2025 and February 2026. Financial data, including adjusted stock prices and year-over-year quarterly revenue growth, were collected from Yahoo Finance. The final sample included 28 companies after removing outliers and cases with missing data. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that percent change …

Stamp-V: Steganographic Traceability For Ai-Generated Images With Multimodal Verification, Xinlei Guan, David Arosema, Tejaswi Dhandu, Meng Xu, Kuan Huang, Tida Umamheswara Rao, Bingya Shen Apr 2026

Stamp-V: Steganographic Traceability For Ai-Generated Images With Multimodal Verification, Xinlei Guan, David Arosema, Tejaswi Dhandu, Meng Xu, Kuan Huang, Tida Umamheswara Rao, Bingya Shen

Center for Cybersecurity

The rapid growth of generative AI has intensified challenges in content moderation and digital forensics, particularly when benign AI-generated images are paired with harmful or misleading text. This contextual misuse undermines traditional moderation systems and complicates attribution, as synthetic images typically lack persistent metadata or device signatures. We introduce STAMP-V, a steganography-enabled provenance framework that embeds cryptographically signed identifiers into images at creation time and verifies provenance through multimodal harmful content detection. Our system evaluates five watermarking methods across spatial, frequency, and wavelet domains, and integrates a CLIP-based fusion model that performs multimodal harmful-content detection as part of the provenance …

An Operational Framework For Integrating Content, Cognition And Language Into Planning For Aen Mathematics Learners Within A Clil Context, Máire Ní Ríordáin, Craig Neville

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The growing diversity in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) classrooms, particularly the inclusion of Additional Educational Needs (AEN) learners, highlights an urgent need for research addressing their unique challenges. These students often face compounded difficulties, navigating the dual demands of mastering subject content and developing proficiency in the instructional language, with limited frameworks to support their needs. This article presents an operational framework for integrating content, cognition, and language into planning mathematics education for AEN learners. Grounded in theoretical approaches such as communicative competence, CAPA, and pluriliteracies, the framework addresses key challenges in developing mathematical literacy. The framework provides …

Governing Algorithmic Insurance: Reconciling The Eu Ai Act With Insurance-Specific Regulation, Pierpaolo Marano, Shu Li Apr 2026

Governing Algorithmic Insurance: Reconciling The Eu Ai Act With Insurance-Specific Regulation, Pierpaolo Marano, Shu Li

Connecticut Insurance Law Journal

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the insurance industry, driving automation in underwriting, claims handling, and risk assessment. These technological developments offer enhanced efficiency and innovation, but they also raise complex legal questions regarding transparency, fairness, bias, and accountability. Within the European Union, existing regulatory frameworks—chiefly Solvency II and the Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD)—provide prudential and conduct-of-business safeguards but were not designed with algorithmic systems in mind. In response to emerging challenges, the EU adopted the Artificial Intelligence Act in 2024, establishing a horizontal, risk-based legal framework applicable across all sectors, including insurance. This article provides an EU-focused legal analysis of …

Insurance And The Law Of Artificial Intelligence, Kenneth S. Abraham, Catherine M. Sharkey Apr 2026

Insurance And The Law Of Artificial Intelligence, Kenneth S. Abraham, Catherine M. Sharkey

Connecticut Insurance Law Journal

This Essay predicts that concerns about the insurability and insurance of AI liability will prove to be either exaggerated or unwarranted as the future unfolds. AI liability is already covered by a number of existing forms of “silent” liability insurance. We also predict the growth of “affirmative” AI insurance that expressly covers specified AI losses. There are already tiny bits of such insurance. That is how cyber insurance began, and it is now a thriving, $16.6 billion business in the U.S. alone. We believe that affirmative AI insurance will develop in a similar fashion, and that courts should anticipate such …

Body Cameras Use By Federal Agents, Kevin Holst Apr 2026

Body Cameras Use By Federal Agents, Kevin Holst

Center for Cybersecurity

In today’s political climate and increasingly tense view of law enforcement, obtaining a true and accurate account of police–civilian encounters has become more critical than ever. The widespread use of body-worn cameras serves as an essential tool in preventing false, misleading, or selectively edited narratives by providing objective and comprehensive documentation of interactions between law enforcement agents such as ICE and the public. Over the past decade, body cameras have proven beneficial for local police agencies by protecting officers from unfounded accusations, supporting investigations, and increasing overall transparency. As public scrutiny continues to rise, federal agents now face similar challenges, …

“He Should Be Primaried, And I Will Lead The Charge Against Him”: An Autopsy On The Decline Of Grassroots Organizing And Rhetoric In A Monetized Democracy, Chiara H. Baez Apr 2026

“He Should Be Primaried, And I Will Lead The Charge Against Him”: An Autopsy On The Decline Of Grassroots Organizing And Rhetoric In A Monetized Democracy, Chiara H. Baez

Research and Creativity Symposium

Protest movements in the US have been steadily declining, unable to keep up with changing rhetoric and societal expectations regarding First Amendment free speech. Seemingly overnight, protests have lost the ability to directly input the people’s voice into policymaking. Grassroots protest movements are being priced out of the political participation that was once accessible to them by Political Action Committees (PACs), and politicians are favoring pollsters’ skewed data over the public opinion expressed in organized protest. This has created a systemic barrier, halting the voice of the American people. Grassroots protest movements have not disappeared from the American political landscape; …

Home And School Connection: Enhancing Middle School Literacy Through Family Involvement, Katherine Loveless Apr 2026

Home And School Connection: Enhancing Middle School Literacy Through Family Involvement, Katherine Loveless

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

With continued declines in literacy rates within the United States and a notable lack of parental involvement within a middle school student’s educational journey, this capstone project looks to address both issues with a single project around middle school literacy nights. By means of an in-depth review of timely and relevant literature this capstone addresses the barriers that are frequently encountered for literacy based events such as rivaling expectations for involvement, socioeconomic barriers, scheduling conflicts, and language barriers. Through the development of this project, a resource-based website was created for event hosts, school leadership, and parents to rely on to …

Geographies Of Change: Exploring Demographic Shifts & Civic Engagement Through Gis-Based Inquiry, Emily Murphy Apr 2026

Geographies Of Change: Exploring Demographic Shifts & Civic Engagement Through Gis-Based Inquiry, Emily Murphy

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The research question addressed by my Capstone project was: How can an ArcGIS-based inquiry project about local demographic change be designed to engage students in civics and community identity? It is based within secondary social studies education, particularly human geography. Through a constructivist approach, this project applies key findings from research on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geographic inquiry-based learning, spatial citizenship, and suburban demographic shifts. These highlight the instructional potential of ArcGIS for student-centered interactivity and spatial analysis, as well as challenges in implementation. Using a backwards-planning curriculum design methodology informed by Understanding by Design (UbD), this project develops a …

Evolving Approaches To Teaching Secondary English Language Arts In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Timothy Crepeau Apr 2026

Evolving Approaches To Teaching Secondary English Language Arts In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Timothy Crepeau

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Centered on the question of how to foster academic integrity while maintaining accountability for AI-assisted plagiarism in secondary English language arts (ELA) education, this project responds to the growing reality that students can outsource core cognitive tasks—reading, analysis, and writing—to AI tools. Informed by key influences from neuroscience and educational research, particularly studies on neural plasticity, the reading brain, and cognitive offloading, the project draws on scholarship by Collins, Wolf, and contemporary AI-in-education theorists. These influences underscore the central premise that meaningful learning is not merely demonstrated through output, but developed through the neurological processes activated by sustained cognitive effort. …

The Causes, Effects Of, And Solutions To A Nation-Wide Reading Comprehension Decline And Answers To The Question Of What Can Teachers Do About It?, Otto Harris Apr 2026

The Causes, Effects Of, And Solutions To A Nation-Wide Reading Comprehension Decline And Answers To The Question Of What Can Teachers Do About It?, Otto Harris

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The purpose of this project was to research the causes and effects of the reading comprehension decline in America. The research question: What is causing this decline, and how can we combat it? stemmed from personal interest in this topic and its relevancy in the school district I taught in. Research into this topic revealed factors such as texts lacking relevance to student lives, inaccurate comprehension measurement tools being used year after year, and the lifelong effects of lowered reading comprehension on adults’ lives after high school. In response to this need, a capstone project was developed that would provide …

A Place-Based Approach To Teaching Dakota History In Sixth Grade Social Studies, John Hooper Apr 2026

A Place-Based Approach To Teaching Dakota History In Sixth Grade Social Studies, John Hooper

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

This capstone project explored the question: How can a culturally responsive, land-based field trip that centers on the history and perspectives of the Dakota people deepen middle school students’ historical understanding, identity development, and their personal connection to place? In an effort to move beyond traditional textbook-based teaching, this study analyzed how experiential and place-based strategies can foster more meaningful and inclusive learning opportunities. Key themes from the literature review included culturally sustaining pedagogy, land-based and experiential learning, and the value of centering Indigenous perspectives. Research indicates that immersing students in hands-on experiences, while increasing exposure to primary sources and …

Building Teacher Capacity: Using Professional Development To Implement Literacy Across The Curriculum In Middle Schools, Katie Grandgenett Apr 2026

Building Teacher Capacity: Using Professional Development To Implement Literacy Across The Curriculum In Middle Schools, Katie Grandgenett

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The research question guiding this project is: How can professional development for middle school teachers support the implementation of literacy across the curriculum at the middle school level? The project addresses the issues arising on students falling behind in literacy skills as they make the transition to secondary education where there is less focus on foundational skills. This work builds upon the existing literature focusing on literacy education and how literacy can be used at the secondary level across all contents. This includes research on disciplinary literacy, reading, writing and speaking skills associated with literacy improvement. The methodology involved designing …

Social Emotional Learning In A High School Setting, Aaron Stack Apr 2026

Social Emotional Learning In A High School Setting, Aaron Stack

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

This project examined the capstone question: How can one design and implement a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program for high school students? This topic is important as more and more students are exhibiting less desirable behaviors inside the classroom. While exploring this question, several key findings emerged. First, SEL programming in a high school setting may have a positive impact on students’ academic performance and behaviors. Second, there is no clear distinction between the effectiveness of the program as long as the SEL ideas are consistently explored. Based on these two findings, an SEL program was developed for high school …

A Set Of Grading Protocol Implementation Tools For A Unit Project In A High School Visual Arts Classroom, Brie-Anna Cabrera Apr 2026

A Set Of Grading Protocol Implementation Tools For A Unit Project In A High School Visual Arts Classroom, Brie-Anna Cabrera

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

This capstone explores the question: How can high school educators promote equity through their grading protocols? Realizing there is a gap in research combining the ideas of equity and grading, this paper uses culturally relevant pedagogy, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and cultural and linguistic responsiveness as a lens to determine effectiveness of promoting equity through a variety of grading protocols. Using the concluding evidence and honing in on Guskey's idea of multiple grades, the research was organized into a framework for more equitable grading that can be translated to the visual arts. This research resulted in the creation of a set …

Connecting Children To Urban Environments Through Picture Books, Sophie Taylor Apr 2026

Connecting Children To Urban Environments Through Picture Books, Sophie Taylor

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

More children than ever before live in urban locations, and many do not see their city streets and natural environments represented in picture books. In the midst of a climate crisis, educators and parents may be seeking environmental books and activities that seek to connect children to their natural communities. The purpose of this capstone project was to explore the importance of picture books in connecting children with their environment through the creation of an urban-based children’s book with embedded environmental terminology and concepts, as well as associated activities. A review of relevant literature uncovered five central themes: illustrated books’ …
