Belle Époque French Fashion: Understanding French Clothing Labels In Historical American Media, Meg E. Smith
Belle Époque French Fashion: Understanding French Clothing Labels In Historical American Media, Meg E. Smith
Scholars Week
A period of French prosperity know as the Belle Epoque followed the Franco-Prussain War from 1871-1914. Within this time, Parisian Fashion would blossom and flourish with couturiers, fashion designers, rising in fame and influence within textile and clothing markets. Credit to this prosperity can be given to the second industrial revolution, the end of a long depression, and a dominating industry of luxury market goods production in tandem with a sharp increase in foreign trade. Foreign media, such as American newspapers, would display the array of reactions to the success of Parisian styles. Retail progression and the commercialization of leisure …

Southern Adventist University’s School of Computing produces numerous course projects, capstones, and research papers each year, yet there is no centralized, public showcase for this work. Our system provides a structured submission workflow for current and former students, faculty approval to ensure academic quality, and moderated commenting and likes to encourage constructive engagement. We outline the content model, role-based access control, and review queue, and describe search, tagging, and media support (including PDFs, images, and code links). By making student work visible beyond the classroom, the portfolio supports recruitment, alumni relations, and employer outreach while strengthening the School’s scholarly community.
Redesigning A Fitness App Interface For Physiological Constrained Users*, Joseph E. Manzanillo
Redesigning A Fitness App Interface For Physiological Constrained Users*, Joseph E. Manzanillo
Campus Research Month
As fitness tracking converges with medical monitoring, inclusive design becomes a matter of health equity. This research utilizes a Polar Beat redesign to address exclusionary "sporty" aesthetics that can exclude 300 million colorblind users. Based in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), the study implements WCAG AA standards and color-blind-verified filters to mitigate data loss during Situational Induced Impairment (SIID), when high-intensity exercise compromises cognitive and visual processing. By optimizing user journeys for Paralympic and geriatric archetypes, this work demonstrates that accessibility is the essential bridge transitioning mobile fitness apps into viable, inclusive instruments for clinical medical use.

College students frequently incorporate breaks of various types into their study sessions; however, limited research has examined how different types of breaks affect memory retention. The proposed study will examine how exercising, spending time on social media, or participating in quiet rest affect delayed recall among undergraduate college students. The study predicts that students who participate in an exercise break will show improved memory retention, while students who are exposed to social media will experience reduced memory retention. The study also hypothesizes that students who are assigned to the quiet rest condition will demonstrate no significant change in retention. Undergraduate …

Adaptive Content Pacing And Media Playlist Resolution To Match Dynamic Time Constraints, Thiyagaraj Krishna
Defensive Publications Series
Digital media platforms can create fixed-duration playlists that may be misaligned with a user's variable, real-world time constraints, such as a commute, potentially resulting in abrupt content interruptions or periods of silence. This disclosure describes systems and methods for dynamically synchronizing media playback with a time-bound activity. A system can generate an initial media queue to approximate a time budget and can monitor for discrepancies between the remaining content duration and the activity's remaining time. Based on the magnitude of a detected discrepancy, the system can apply a tiered re-calibration mechanism. For example, such a mechanism may include restructuring the …
Covariate Adjustment For Variance Reduction In Online Controlled Experiments, Roy Katz
Covariate Adjustment For Variance Reduction In Online Controlled Experiments, Roy Katz
Defensive Publications Series
Online controlled experiments often struggle to measure small treatment effects in metrics characterized by high variance and long-tailed distributions. Conventional approaches of increasing sample size to mitigate statistical noise can require impractically large user populations or extended experiment durations. This disclosure describes a system that utilizes pre-experiment data as a covariate within a regression adjustment model to reduce variance in outcome metrics. The system incorporates a data processing pipeline to collect baseline user activity, a power analysis toolkit for prospective efficiency calculations, and an automated bias detection module to monitor group imbalances. By accounting for pre-existing behavioral patterns, the technology …

Not Just Static: Evolutionary Throughlines In The Female Voice, Maria Hand '26
Honor Scholar Theses
Vocal communication is essential for many forms of human interaction and discourse. As such, the human voice has been the subject of extensive scientific research in a variety of contexts, including that of potentially evolved characteristics. Researchers have long studied the various changes that occur in direct relation to hormonal shifts across the ovulatory cycle, but one particularly interesting facet of this research is the voice. There are numerous acoustic parameters that are highly socially salient, and thus an ideal means with which to study potential ovulatory cycle related changes. Studies of this subject additionally provide further insight into the …

Parallel Proceedings Between International Commercial Litigation And Arbitration: Existing Tools And Comparative Perspective, Joanna Ma
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
This Article examines parallel proceedings in international commercial disputes, focusing on situations in which the same parties and substantially the same issues are simultaneously before a national court and an arbitral tribunal. It surveys the principal tools that jurisdictions have developed to address this problem, including the priority-in-time rule, the prioritization of arbitral tribunals, tolerance of parallel proceedings, anti-suit injunctions, and anti-arbitration injunctions. After evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each approach, the Article argues that prioritizing arbitral tribunals provides the most coherent and workable framework for managing such conflicts. In particular, the model of granting full priority to arbitral …
