Do We Even Know What ‘Even’ Does? A Ca Investigation, Emily Johnson Apr 2026

Do We Even Know What ‘Even’ Does? A Ca Investigation, Emily Johnson

Comm-entary

Emily is a Senior communication major with a Business Administration minor. She is originally from Merrimack, NH, and is planning on working in PR or something similar when she graduates in May.

What does “even” do in conversation? This study shows that when used mid-turn, “even” functions as a systematic device for intensifying stance. Analyzing naturally occurring interactions, I demonstrate how speakers use “even” to upgrade assessments, noticings, and complaints, making them more extreme or noteworthy. Recipients consistently orient to this intensification through agreement, accounts, or escalation. Even when the upgrade is left incomplete, others step in to realize it, …

Enhancing Researcher Competence In Ai For Science Paradigm Shift And Corresponding Strategies, Shuo Wang, Yan Yan, Zhengfeng Li

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Against the backdrop of the paradigm shift triggered by AI for Science (AI4S) and intensifying global technological competition, systematically enhancing researchers’ AI4S competence is essential for developing new quality productive forces and achieving scientific and technological self-reliance. In practice, AI4S manifests in both specialized and general forms, imposing universal, multi-dimensional competence requirements on researchers. AI4S competence comprises four core dimensions: computational thinking for scientific problems, human-AI interaction and verification, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ethical awareness and responsibility. Future talent development should transform fragmented self-learning into organized competence training, shifting from teaching technical tools to cultivating computational thinking, building a tiered support …

Originalism's Unbalanced Ledger, David Zaring Apr 2026

Originalism's Unbalanced Ledger, David Zaring

Duke Law Journal

This Essay examines the fundamental tension between originalism and cost-benefit analysis—the two dominant methodologies shaping modern, public law decision-making. Originalism, currently triumphant, prioritizes historical meaning and textual fidelity. It operates in stark contrast to cost-benefit analysis, the byword of the administrative state since 1982, which focuses on the future and efficiency. Descriptively, the two methodologies are irreconcilable. Nor is it possible to pair them by claiming they serve different purposes; originalism and cost-benefit analysis conflict when assessing agency design, constitutional rights, and judicial review of administrative action. As regulatory policymaking continues to rely on empirical and economic assessments, originalism's influence …

Addressing Barriers To Occupational Therapy Access For Foster Youth Through Advocacy And Education, Josephine Sanders Apr 2026

Addressing Barriers To Occupational Therapy Access For Foster Youth Through Advocacy And Education, Josephine Sanders

Capstone Projects

Occupational therapy (OT) is well positioned to support regulation, sensory processing, and participation in daily activities, yet its role in trauma-informed care is often underrecognized. Foster youth experience disproportionately high rates of trauma exposure, which can affect emotional regulation, behavior, relationships, and participation in meaningful occupations. Despite these needs, barriers within healthcare systems and limited awareness of OT’s role often prevent foster youth from accessing services.

This doctoral capstone experience focused on increasing access to OT for foster youth through advocacy, education, and advanced clinical learning and practice. The experience took place at CAYA Therapies in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where …

This research aimed to build a methodology for video summarization utilizing the difference in the histogram of video frames using three stages. Frames were elicited from the video, and then SIFT detectors were utilized in …

Biomass Fuel Processing, Mineral Matter Engineering, And Ash Phase Equilibria For Deposition Control In Coal To Biomass Boiler Conversion, Spencer Bandi Apr 2026

Biomass Fuel Processing, Mineral Matter Engineering, And Ash Phase Equilibria For Deposition Control In Coal To Biomass Boiler Conversion, Spencer Bandi

Theses and Dissertations

As the conversion of coal utility boilers to 100% biomass combustors gains traction, understanding the interconnected impacts of harvesting and storage methods, fuel preparation, and thermochemical ash behavior is critical. This study evaluates miscanthus, switchgrass, and corn stover, targeting a < 1000 µm particle size through minimal (shredders/hammer mills) and heavy (pelletizing) pre-treatment. While heavy pre-treatment failed in a coal mill, minimal pre-treatment succeeded. Miscanthus (forage-harvested/silage-bagged) proved optimal, exhibiting minimal exogenous mineral accumulation up to (1.26 w%) and the smoothest mechanical feeding (deviation < 9%) due to its low particle aspect ratio. Conversely, baled switchgrass and corn stover accumulated up to 9.23 w% mineral matter and exhibited severe feeding resistance (>17% deviation) driven by fibrous, high-aspect-ratio morphologies. During combustion, agricultural residues yield low ash fusion temperatures (AFTs), generating deposits two to three times stronger than coal. To mitigate this severe fouling, mineral additives (coal fly ash, lime, and cement kiln dust) were injected. These additives effectively raised bulk AFTs and reduced deposit tenacity by up to 73%. Specifically, 2 w% …

Antibacterial Tellurium Dioxide Nanoparticles Incorporated Into An Adhesive Wound Dressing, Tina Hesabizadeh, Rajendra Subedi, Rolando Baez, Thomas J. Webster, Gregory Guisbiers Apr 2026

Antibacterial Tellurium Dioxide Nanoparticles Incorporated Into An Adhesive Wound Dressing, Tina Hesabizadeh, Rajendra Subedi, Rolando Baez, Thomas J. Webster, Gregory Guisbiers

Faculty Scholarship

Tellurium dioxide (TeO2) nanoparticles were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL) using a bottom-ablation configuration, with deionized water as the solvent and pure tellurium pellets as the target. The resulting nanoparticles were spherical, with an average diameter of 56 ± 13 nm. Phase analysis indicated that the nanoparticles consisted mainly of around 83% of paratellurite α-TeO2, with a minor fraction, i.e., around 17% of the metastable γ-TeO2 phase. The antibacterial performance of the TeO2 nanoparticles was evaluated against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), demonstrating broad-spectrum antibacterial activity at concentrations as low as …

Economic Sanctions And State Capacity In Target Countries, Showrav Paul Apr 2026

Economic Sanctions And State Capacity In Target Countries, Showrav Paul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The thesis examines whether economic sanctions erode the target countries’ state capacity and whether these effects differ by the identity of the sanctioning actors. Drawing on “the naïve theory of sanctions”, the thesis hypothesizes that economic sanctions reduce fiscal and administrative capacity but incentivize military capacity. By incorporating data from the Global Sanctions Database, the World Bank, and the V-Dem datasets, the thesis employs country-fixed-effects models to test hypotheses. The overall findings contradict the naïve assumptions and indicate that sanctions have limited efficacy in undermining the state capacity of target countries. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) economic …

Of Another Order: Constructing The Everyday Elsewhere, Hannah Yandoh Apr 2026

Of Another Order: Constructing The Everyday Elsewhere, Hannah Yandoh

Theses

This thesis investigates the intersection of contemporary painting and ceramics through the critical framework of Situationist thought, using it as a lens to destabilize binary systems of meaning. Ceramic forms are treated both as physical structure and as metaphor. The project draws on Situationist ideas to question authorship, value, and artistic authority, while embracing naïve and unresolved visual strategies. Repetition, variation, and spatial ambiguity shape works that exist between object and gesture, especially within the domestic sphere. Combining studio experimentation, material exploration, and surface intervention, this work proposes a hybrid practice where 2D and 3D operate together as interdependent destabilizing …

School of Information Student Research Journal

This article examines decolonization and indigenization initiatives at two academic libraries: the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of New Mexico (UNM). It asks how these institutions have implemented indigenization in their libraries and what lessons can inform broader reconciliation work across North America. Through a comparative lens, it analyzes how national and organizational frameworks, such as the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA-FCAB) Truth and Reconciliation Report and Recommendations and the American Indian Library Association’s (AILA) organizational goals, can shape these efforts. The study highlights three core strategies: decolonizing access and classification, transforming library spaces, and expanding …
