Liminality And Space In The Iliad And The Heike Monogatari, Jade Simmons Apr 2026

Liminality And Space In The Iliad And The Heike Monogatari, Jade Simmons

Theses and Dissertations

Both the Iliad and the Heike monogatari have received scholarly attention throughout the years, though rarely in comparison with one another. A few scholars, such as Tyler Creer and Naoko Yamagata, have attempted to examine the two side by side, but very little work has been done beyond their respective analyses. This is unsurprising as a cursory glance at the two texts suggests that they are too separated by time and space to warrant closer examination. I argue, however, that there is great value in analyzing the two side by side. Indeed, a closer look at these texts reveals that …

Gratitude And The Second Language Writer: The Effects Of Gratitude Journaling In The English Language Writing Classroom, Lauren Smith Apr 2026

Gratitude And The Second Language Writer: The Effects Of Gratitude Journaling In The English Language Writing Classroom, Lauren Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Gratitude journaling interventions have repeatedly been shown to enhance wellbeing when conducted in participants’ first language (Emmons & McCullough, 2003; Sansone & Sansone, 2010), yet no studies to date have examined these practices in second language (L2) contexts. This mixed-methods quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of a six-week gratitude journaling intervention on adult L2 English writers enrolled in an intensive English program. Eleven writing classes (N = 183) were randomly assigned to either a gratitude journaling group or a neutral-events control group, with 123 participants completing all four stages of data collection. Trait gratitude and subjective wellbeing were measured pre-intervention, …

Beyond Measurable Success: An Autoethnographic And Phenomenological Study Of Resilience And Educational Transformation After Incarceration, Robert L. Hudson Apr 2026

Beyond Measurable Success: An Autoethnographic And Phenomenological Study Of Resilience And Educational Transformation After Incarceration, Robert L. Hudson

Graduate Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how formerly incarcerated students make meaning of their higher education experiences as a means of navigating systemic barriers, fostering resilience, and reconstructing identity during post-incarceration reintegration. Existing scholarship on formerly incarcerated students in higher education emphasizes barriers, recidivism, and completion outcomes while paying limited attention to the subjective meaning making processes through which students interpret their educational experiences (Abeyta, 2022; Bozick et al., 2018; Donaldson & Viera, 2021). Formerly incarcerated learners have largely been positioned as subjects of inquiry rather than as knowledge producers about their own educational lives. This qualitative study …

Detecting Eigenvectors Of An Operator That Are Near A Specified Subspace, David Darrow, Jeffrey S. Ovall Apr 2026

Detecting Eigenvectors Of An Operator That Are Near A Specified Subspace, David Darrow, Jeffrey S. Ovall

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In modeling quantum systems or wave phenomena, one is often interested in identifying eigenstates that approximately carry a specified property; scattering states approximately align with incoming and outgoing traveling waves, for instance, and electron states in molecules often approximately align with superpositions of simple atomic orbitals. These examples—and many others—can be formulated as the following eigenproblem: given a selfadjoint operator L on a Hilbert space H and a closed subspace W ⊂ H, can we identify all eigenvectors of L that lie approximately in W? We develop an approach to answer this question efficiently, with a userdefined tolerance and range …

Drowning In The Tube, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 2026

Drowning In The Tube, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Several years ago, I was hosting a group of international exchange students at my university. It was memorable and enjoyable for many reasons, not the least of which was watching them in their first encounters with American consumer culture. I remember the first time I took them to a supermarket to get toothpaste and other personal items. As they went down the aisle surveying several brands and types of toothpaste they came to a stop, seemingly frozen by the task of choosing an item. When I asked them what the problem was, they said that there were way too many …

Exploring Subject-Verb Agreement Challenges Among Third-Grade Portuguese Dual Language Immersion Students: A Mixed-Methods Study, Marisa Tobias Apr 2026

Exploring Subject-Verb Agreement Challenges Among Third-Grade Portuguese Dual Language Immersion Students: A Mixed-Methods Study, Marisa Tobias

Theses and Dissertations

Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs are commonly recognized for supporting the development of oral proficiency; however, persistent challenges with grammatical accuracy, particularly subject-verb agreement, remain common among elementary-aged learners. This mixed-methods study focuses on third-grade students in a Portuguese DLI program and examines how they use present-tense verb forms in different classroom contexts. Drawing on classroom observations, instructional materials, and students’ oral and written production, the study analyzes the nature of the input learners receive and the types of errors that persist during oral communication. Findings indicate that students demonstrate greater accuracy during structured tasks, while difficulties with subject-verb agreement …

Psychological Safety In The Classroom: Effects On Nursing Student Well-Being And Academic Success, Erica Frost, Kelli D. Whittington, Glory Omole, Chloe Birchett Apr 2026

Psychological Safety In The Classroom: Effects On Nursing Student Well-Being And Academic Success, Erica Frost, Kelli D. Whittington, Glory Omole, Chloe Birchett

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

In nursing education, fostering psychologically safe learning environments may support student well-being and academic achievement. Edmondson's Psychological Safety Framework (1999) provides the theoretical foundation for this study, framing classroom psychological safety as an environmental factor that influences student well-being and academic outcomes through its impact on learner engagement and interpersonal risk-taking. There is limited research exploring the relationship between classroom psychological safety and nursing student well-being, particularly in undergraduate face-to-face classroom settings.
The purpose of this study is to examine nursing students' experiences, perceptions, and academic outcomes to better understand how instructor behavior and the classroom teaching environment influence student …

Mcgehee Blow Up And Collision Manifold Of Planar (2+2)-Body Problem, Nathaniel Scott Sill Apr 2026

Mcgehee Blow Up And Collision Manifold Of Planar (2+2)-Body Problem, Nathaniel Scott Sill

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the dynamics of the Planar (2+2)-Body Problem which consists of two asteroids moving under the gravitational force of each other and of two larger primaries. We use the McGehee blow up technique to remove the singularities in the dynamics associated with a triple collision with one of the primaries by introducing a new set of variables. Additional variables are introduced to reduce the dimension of the problem. We then derive the dynamics for these new variables. We then use the energy relation that comes from the original Hamiltonian to describe the collision manifold which is pasted in …

Optimizing Quality Of Service In Cloud Computing: A Performance-Aware Task Classifier For Heterogeneous Big Data Workloads, Pawan Bhaker, Sophiya Sheikh, Rintu Nath, Ajay Nain

Baghdad Science Journal

The Big data originates from various heterogeneous sources worldwide. Due to the diverse origins of data generation, big data involves a variety of tasks. Some require storage resources, while others need computational resources. Additionally, cloud computing provides centralized storage and computational resources for executing these tasks. However, resource optimization and efficient task scheduling remain challenging. Moreover, accurately categorizing tasks and effectively allocating resources based on their nature pose challenges for cloud computing, especially when assigning tasks to heterogeneous resources to minimize task completion time. To address these issues, this paper proposes a Performance-Aware Task Classifier (PATC) algorithm that classifies tasks …

A New Reinforcement Learning Agent Framework For Digital Image Forgery Detection Using Prioritized Experience Replay, Muthana S. Mahdi, Saad N. Alsaad, Hasanen S. Abdullah Apr 2026

A New Reinforcement Learning Agent Framework For Digital Image Forgery Detection Using Prioritized Experience Replay, Muthana S. Mahdi, Saad N. Alsaad, Hasanen S. Abdullah

Baghdad Science Journal

Digital image forgery detection has become an urgent and complex problem in an age when powerful editing tools can easily alter photographs. The familiar maxim ``a picture is worth a thousand words'' can no longer be taken at face value, since even subtle manipulations may conceal or fabricate critical details. Conventional detection methods frequently suffer from highly imbalanced datasets and narrow feature representations that fail to capture the diverse artifacts introduced by modern editing techniques. In response, this work presents a novel framework that casts the forgery detection task as a reinforcement learning problem, enabling an agent to learn a …

An Informative Analysis Of Applying Feature Reduction Methods To Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms, Mustafa S. Abd

Baghdad Science Journal

Feature reduction techniques are fundamental to enhancing machine learning (ML) algorithms by reducing the number of features in a dataset. The study here explores the impact of Principle Component Analysis (PCA) on ML algorithms within an unbalanced classification framework, in partnership with feature selection techniques like Cluster Variation Attribute Evaluator (CVAE) and Correlation Attribute Evaluator (CAE). In addition, the research introspects a comparison analysis evaluating the effectiveness of several ML methods, including Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Decision Tree J48, k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) and Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO). The informative analysis of results signifies that the MLP technique with PCA minimized the …

Weight Concerns And Body Image Dissatisfaction Elicit Maternal Psychological Control Through Escalating Appearance Anxiety Behaviors, Madeleine Guillont Apr 2026

Weight Concerns And Body Image Dissatisfaction Elicit Maternal Psychological Control Through Escalating Appearance Anxiety Behaviors, Madeleine Guillont

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The current study examines bidirectional associations between adolescent body-related concerns and maternal psychological control, and the behavioral mechanism through which these associations operate. Participants were 723 sixth- through ninth-grade students (350 girls, 373 boys; ages 11–15) attending all public middle and secondary schools in a mid-sized Lithuanian community. Self-report surveys were collected at three time points across the course of a school year. Results from full longitudinal mediation models indicated that higher body image dissatisfaction and weight concerns at the beginning of the school year predicted increases in maternal psychological control at the end of the school year, through increases …
