Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia, characterized by the abnormal accumulation of protein aggregates in the brain, known as neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques. It is believed that an imbalance between cerebral and peripheral pools of Aβ may play a relevant role in the deposition of Aβ aggregates. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of the removal of Aβ from blood plasma on the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain. We performed monthly plasma exchange with a 5% mouse albumin solution in the APP/PS1 mouse model from 3 to 7 …

Examining The Potential Of Vitamin C Supplementation In Tissue-Engineered Equine Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon Constructs, Michael J Mienaltowski, Mitchell Callahan, Nicole L Gonzales, Angelique Wong
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Because equine tendinopathies are slow to heal and often recur, therapeutic strategies are being considered that aid tendon repair. Given the success of utilizing vitamin C to promote tenogenesis in other species, we hypothesized that vitamin C supplementation would produce dose-dependent improvements in the tenogenic properties of tendon proper (TP) and peritenon (PERI) cells of the equine superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT). Equine TP- and PERI-progenitor-cell-seeded fibrin three-dimensional constructs were supplemented with four concentrations of vitamin C. The gene expression profiles of the constructs were assessed with 3'-Tag-Seq and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR); collagen content and fibril ultrastructure …

Evaluating The Energy Impact Of Device And Workload Parameters For Dnn Inference On Edge Rpe Report, Anurag Dutt
Electronic Dissertations and Theses, 2010-current
DNN inference is crucially employed in applications ranging from real-time speech recog- nition and language translation to autonomous vehicle navigation and personalized content recommendation, enabling applications to make quick, data-driven decisions. Consequently, these models are increasingly being deployed on edge devices, facilitating ubiquitous com- puting and enabling closer interaction with end users. More often than not, edge devices are constrained in computation resources and often run in battery-operated environments, which makes sustainable deployment of deep learning models essential. This work presents an evaluation of the energy impact of device and workload parameters for DNN inference on edge devices. Our work …

Websites are widely utilized to disseminate news and publications to the public by government institutions. Although the website’s user experience has been extensively studied, there is still a lack of understanding and assessment of the website’s user satisfaction in the ministerial government. User experience in terms of optimizing website utilization has not been well explored, especially regarding satisfaction. Satisfaction is influenced by information quality and system quality factors. Information quality encompasses five variables (completeness, accuracy, format, currency, availability) and system quality consists of nine variables (reliability, flexibility, accessibility, responsiveness, integration, usability, functionality, design appeal, efficiency). This study surveyed the effect …

The Role Of The Artist: Insights From The U.S. Army's Historical Employment Of Artists, Laura Goodwin
Art 895 Research Papers
This study uses a case study and historical analysis to examine how descaling art education programs leads to diminishing the roles of artist in society. To demonstrate how support for art programs affects artists’ roles, this study focuses on the Army’s historical use of art programs that engaged artists in documenting history through the eyes of soldiers in both war and peacetime. The role of artist in the Army parallels the role of artists in society, and the diminished emphasis on art education mirrors what’s happening in our schools. Examining the Army’s history of scaling art programs up and down …

Understanding Students' Racial, Ethnic, And Cultural Identities Through Art, Kelsey Rose Long
Art 895 Research Papers
My study aims to understand how students’ beliefs and feelings about their racial, ethnic, and cultural identities impact the creation of artwork in the art classroom. This is achieved by examining students' interactions with their teachers in the art classroom through autoethnography and ethnography. This study finds that students express their complex cultural identities through artmaking by incorporating visual culture and lived experiences connected to their families and the cultures they grew up in. This research provides art teachers with practical strategies to design and implement more culturally sustaining art lessons so they can better understand their students’ cultural identities.

Slapp Suits: An Encroachment On Human Rights Of A Global Proportion And What Can Be Done About It, Laura Lee Prather
Northwestern Journal of Human Rights
Freedom of expression is the underpinning of all other freedoms. Yet, increasingly, journalists, citizens, advocacy groups, whistleblowers, academics, and media organizations are being targeted and subjected to judicial harassment for informing the public about matters of public concern, denouncing authoritarian regimes, and exposing wrongdoing. These meritless lawsuits do not seek to right a wrong, but rather to silence and intimidate critics. They are known as “Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation” (“SLAPP” suits) and are on the rise globally. Because SLAPP suits are designed to inhibit ongoing investigations, stifle informed public debate, and prevent legitimate public interest reporting, they present a …

The Qualitative Report
Aspiring counselor educators in Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP)-accredited programs must learn to be counselors, teachers, supervisors, researchers, and leaders. These roles can overlap, creating multiple complex relationships during their programs. To examine these roles, we conducted a constructivist grounded theory investigation of how counselor education doctoral students (n = 9) balanced multiple roles and relationships and boundary crossings. We utilized chain referral sampling and continued until we reached theoretical saturation. We used semi-structured interviews conducted via videoconferencing (Zoom) for data collection and coded the interviews using two main phases: an initial phase and …
