Tunnels As Temples Of 'New Green India': Dominant Narratives Of Himalayan Dam Building, Manshi Asher, Vivek Negi
Tunnels As Temples Of 'New Green India': Dominant Narratives Of Himalayan Dam Building, Manshi Asher, Vivek Negi
National Law School Journal
The dramatic unfolding of the Joshimath crisis in Uttarakhand, India, has brought the world’s attention once again to the Himalaya. The contribution of a 520-megawatt hydropower dam to land subsidence is squarely in the spotlight. River valleys with bumper-to-bumper hydropower dam building, especially in the North Western Himalaya, in the past decade and a half or so, have witnessed frequent slope de-stabilisation, landslides and seepages. Unlike the visible dispossession of rural—often adivasi and dalit— populations in reservoir based dam affected areas, even establishing and ‘scientifically’ correlating cascading hazards with human impacts of the ‘invisible’ activity of run-of-the-river dams in the …

The American University: Attitudes About Safety And The Impact Of Gun Regulations On Campus, April Bixler
Online Theses and Dissertations
An ultimate goal of American universities is to provide a safe and secure environment for all who attend and operate there, but what safety looks and feels like to the individual can vary to a great degree. There are many factors that campus safety departments consider when designing their campus safety policies and regulations. One way universities in the U.S. have chosen to regulate campus safety is by allowing concealed carry (CC) on their campuses. No evidence was found in the state of Kentucky that explains if a CC policy is warranted or being pursued by faculty, staff and students …

We Are The Reason We Stand Still In The Face Of Climate Change., Sydney Hemp
Honors Theses
Many different factors can impact the way any information is received but it is especially important to see how scientific information is received because it is often backed up by a great deal of evidence, especially in the case of global climate change. Many of these factors have nothing to do with science and everything to do with social influences, political parties, and other demographic measures. Discussion of these relationships is important when discussing communication in a broad sense, but it can be even more important when bringing up things like global climate change, which has become a political topic …

Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol And Cannabidiol Effect On Dopamine Transporter Expression And Function, Delia M. Guzman
Student Theses
Drug addiction is a major endemic crisis in the United States with a higher prevalence than any other country. Marijuana and hallucinogens make up a great percentage of the drugs of abuse in Americans ranging from 15 to 64 years old. Marijuana contains over 500 active compounds that contribute to its effects, the major components being delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-9-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Understanding the pharmacological mechanism as well as the effects that they elicit through the dopaminergic reward system is a key factor in being able to understand why addiction is so prevalent in our society. This research was aimed to …

Using Quantitative And Kinetic Proteomics To Explore Proteostasis, Nathan Raul Zuniga Pina
Using Quantitative And Kinetic Proteomics To Explore Proteostasis, Nathan Raul Zuniga Pina
Theses and Dissertations
Every cell consists of carefully orchestrated biomolecules such as lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. To maintain internal stability (homeostasis), cells maintain the right amount of these molecules at the right time and at the right place. This process is especially true for proteins since they are the foundation functional units within the cell. Proteins form structures and perform chemistry that bestows cells overarching functional roles. Cells maintain protein homeostasis (proteostasis) by modulating synthesis, folding, and degradation processes (turnover) to maintain the abundance levels for all proteins. This is the foundational kinetic model of proteostasis that is covered in this work, and …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Colorimetric And Flurometric Chemosensor For Trivalent Metal Ions, Fazila Haque
Synthesis And Characterization Of Colorimetric And Flurometric Chemosensor For Trivalent Metal Ions, Fazila Haque
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
There are many biological and environmental uses for trivalent metals (like Fe3+, Al3+, and Cr3+) within our daily lives. Whether these trivalent metals are found in deficiency or excess can cause issues within our environment (global warming) or our bodies (can cause problems with our digestive, cardiovascular, and immune systems). Being able to detect them and understanding their importance becomes crucial in our understanding of the world that surrounds us.
/="/">One of the ways we can detect these trivalent metals is through the use of chemosensors. Chemosensors are used to sense analyte (trivalent metal) to produce a signal (fluorescence …

A Comparison Of A Novel Optimized Gsdmm Model With K-Means Clustering For Topic Modelling Of Free Text, H Abdelmotaleb, M Wojtys, C Mcneile
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Statistical topic modelling has become an important tool in the text processing field, because more applications are using it to handle the increasing amount of available text data, e.g. from social media platforms. The aim of topic modelling is to discover the main themes or topics from a collection of text documents. While several models have been developed, there is no consensus on evaluating the models, and how to determine the best hyper-parameters of the model. In this research, we develop a method for evaluating topic models for short text that employs word embedding and measuring within-topic variability and separation …

Despite the increasing number of GPCR structures and recent advances in peptide design, the development of efficient technologies allowing rational design of high-affinity peptide ligands for single GPCRs remains an unmet challenge. Here, we develop a computational approach for designing conjugates of lariat-shaped macrocyclized peptides and a small molecule opioid ligand. We demonstrate its feasibility by discovering chemical scaffolds for the kappa-opioid receptor (KOR) with desired pharmacological activities. The designed De Novo Cyclic Peptide (DNCP)-β-naloxamine (NalA) exhibit in vitro potent mixed KOR agonism/mu-opioid receptor (MOR) antagonism, nanomolar binding affinity, selectivity, and efficacy bias at KOR. Proof-of-concept in vivo efficacy studies …
