The Impact Of Institutional Culture On Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge In Higher Education, Kenna Spiller Vowell Dec 2023

The Impact Of Institutional Culture On Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge In Higher Education, Kenna Spiller Vowell

Theses and Dissertations

Teaching and learning online is an increasingly important aspect of higher education, especially post-Covid-19. Previous studies have shown a relationship between Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and teaching efficacy and teaching efficacy and student success. However, the contextual factors impacting TPACK have not been adequately explored. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if the contextual factor of institutional culture impacts TPACK among online higher education faculty at institutions in the Southeastern United States as well as to what extent specific dimensions of institutional culture effect TPACK levels. Data were collected using an anonymous online survey that was …

Taking Care Of What Matters: How Student Involvement And Characteristics Relate To Senior Student Sense Of Belonging, Kayla Pineda Dec 2023

Taking Care Of What Matters: How Student Involvement And Characteristics Relate To Senior Student Sense Of Belonging, Kayla Pineda

Theses and Dissertations

Student sense of belonging has been a topic of discussion for decades; however, senior student sense of belonging has not been looked at as closely as other groups of students. As seniors transition out of college, institutions must consider that these students become the alumni who contribute through alumni donations and share their experiences with future generations of students.

Looking at data from a single very high research college campus in a rural state, the study explored variables that relate to senior student sense of belonging. Using Ahn and Davis’s (2020a) 4 domains of student sense of belonging, variables were …

Despite many theories on student success as well as many resources to help students make the transition from high school to college, many students do not persist in or graduate from college. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide insight into what takes place when students leave P-12 institutions and enter institutions of higher education by using focused narrative inquiry. This study took place at a large research university in the south. The study included 4 participants at various parts of their transition journey. Participants in the study responded to written prompts. Follow up interviews were conducted, and a …

Electroencephalography And Biomechanics Of The Basketball Throw, Phong Ky Phan Dec 2023

Electroencephalography And Biomechanics Of The Basketball Throw, Phong Ky Phan

Theses and Dissertations

According to various studies, compared with novice athletes, experts exhibit superior integration of perceptual, cognitive, and motor skills. This superior ability has been associated with the focused and efficient organization of task-related neural networks. Specifically, skilled individuals demonstrate a spatially localized or relatively lower response in brain activity, characterized as ‘neural efficiency’, when performing within their domain of expertise. Previous works also suggested that elite basketball players can predict successful free throws more rapidly and accurately based on cues from body kinematics. These traits are the result of a prolonged training of specific motor skills and focused excitability of the …

Evaluating The Greet-Stop-Prompt Intervention In Decreasing Racial Disparities In School Discipline, Alexandra Utley Dec 2023

Evaluating The Greet-Stop-Prompt Intervention In Decreasing Racial Disparities In School Discipline, Alexandra Utley

Theses and Dissertations

Exclusionary discipline practices are often considered to be generally ineffective and inequitable, however, they are one of the more common disciplinary practices used in schools today. Although there are many positive alternatives to school exclusion, there are limited disciplinary practices specifically intended to target discipline with racial equity in mind. The GREET-STOP-PROMPT (GSP) intervention, developed by Cook and colleagues (2018), is one intervention found in the literature explicitly created to reduce racial discipline disparities. Although there is currently limited research evaluating the GSP intervention, the results indicate it to be a potentially promising method of equitably addressing student behavior. The …

Modeling Compound Effects Of Earthquakes And Flooding On The Failure Probability Of Earthen Levees, Mohammad Reza Mahdavizadeh

Theses and Dissertations

Earthen levees are crucial components of a nation's flood protection system. However, in some regions, these levees face the unique challenge of being subjected to both floods and earthquakes throughout their lifespan, an aspect that is relatively unexplored in the existing literature. The primary aim of this research is to examine earthquakes' and floods' effects on earthen levee failures. Using numerical simulations, the seepage, slope stability, and liquefaction potential of an earthen levee were modeled by considering compound of different floods and earthquakes scenarios. Elkhorn Levee in Sacramento, CA, was used as a representative case study for the simulations. The …

Improved Herbicide Selectivity In Tomato By Safening Action Of Benoxacor, 2,4,6-T, Melatonin, And Fenclorim, Tabata Raissa De Oliveira

Theses and Dissertations

Safeners protect crops by enhancing their ability to metabolize various compounds, including herbicides. They primarily work by increasing the crop's tolerance to herbicide damage, activating herbicide-metabolizing proteins, and aiding in their detoxification. This study aimed to investigate the chemical effects of safeners in tomato cultivation and focus on injury reduction and tissue protection. The experiment followed a randomized factorial design (5x4) with four replications repeated twice. We evaluated the effects of herbicides (dicamba, 2,4-D, metribuzin, and sulfentrazone at 1/100) and safeners (benoxacor, fenclorim, melatonin, 2,4,6-T, and an untreated control). Safeners were applied to the seeds before sowing, and herbicides were …

Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of asymmetric 3-arm homostar (3h-star) and 3-miktoarm star (3μ-star) chains grafted on silica nanoparticles simultaneously with the formation of silica. We employed high-vacuum anionic polymerization techniques to synthesize well-defined ω-triethoxysilyl (TEOS)-terminated (PS)2PS, (PS)2PI, and (PS)2PI-b-PS macromonomers (polystyrene (PS) and polyisoprene (PI)), which upon hydrolysis/condensation of the terminal TEOS yielded the grafted silica nanoparticles. The molecular characteristics of the precursors (PS)2PS-TEOS, (PS)2PI-TEOS, and (PS)2PI-b-PS-TEOS were determined by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). The formation of 3h-star and 3μ-star@SiO2 nanoparticles was demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 29Si solid-state …

Disruption of epithelial barriers is a common disease manifestation in chronic degenerative diseases of the airways, lung, and intestine. Extensive human genetic studies have identified risk loci in such diseases, including in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and inflammatory bowel diseases. The genes associated with these loci have not fully been determined, and functional characterization of such genes requires extensive studies in model organisms. Here, we report the results of a screen in

Creating A Safer Lgbtqi+ Refugee Experience In Kakuma Camp, Wren King

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

In December of 2013, Uganda passed the controversial Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which broadly criminalized same-sex relationships and supported the livelihoods of individuals in same-sex relationships, permitting sentences of life in prison for some sex acts. Ugandans fled the country to protect their safety. Many came to Kenya, a large majority coming to Kakuma Camp in the northwestern part of the country. At least 400 LGBTQI+ Ugandans arrived in the country between January 2014 and February 2015. Their resettlement was initially expedited and comparatively generous resources were made available to them. However, by the end of 2014, UNHCR and its partner organizations …

Is Early Sport Specialization Harming Our Children?, Kendra Dunsford Dpt, Scs, Stc, Preeti Oza Pt, Phd

Pacific Journal of Health

Sports and physical activity in children are healthy and have numerous positive mental and physical health benefits. Recently, there has been a shift away from deliberate play and focusing on specializing in a single sport from a young age. Participating in rigorous training and competition schedules 8 months out of the year for prepubescent athletes has garnered attention from the medical community. It is assumed that this type of early specialization has the potential to cause negative effects, especially in terms of overuse injuries, nutritional deficiencies, poor sleep hygiene, and mental health concerns. While there appears to be a consensus …

Although there is increasing awareness of the relationships between ecosystem health, access to and interaction with nature, and human wellness, examples of instructional activities to convey these issues in medical education are limited. To address this need, P.C.S. developed a five week elective course for up to twelve students within a medical humanities curriculum. Students discuss themes covered in multi-media assignments, hike at a regional nature center, and write a final reflection essay. Discussion topics include nature-deficit disorder, nature immersion, nature prescription, creation care, social determinants of nature access and environmental health, and restorative recreation as an avocation. Follow-up surveys …

Possibility Thinking In The Community-Engaged Classroom: Uniting Hope And Imagination Towards Anti-Racist Action, Betsy Bowen, Lilly Campbell, Jenna Green, Emily A. Phillips Dec 2023

Possibility Thinking In The Community-Engaged Classroom: Uniting Hope And Imagination Towards Anti-Racist Action, Betsy Bowen, Lilly Campbell, Jenna Green, Emily A. Phillips

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Drawing on the work of Patrick Saint-Jean, S.J., this article examines the contribution that “possibility thinking” makes to community-engaged learning at three Jesuit universities. The article considers ways in which possibility thinking intersects both Jesuit and secular perspectives on hope and imagination, and their relationship to anti-racist praxis. We then describe three institutional contexts at different stages of enacting community-engaged learning in introductory and upper-level English classes. The article concludes by offering three praxis-oriented directions for community-engaged learning educators to take up in their own institutional contexts: developing faculty capacity and awareness; fostering solidarity not charity; and encouraging reflection not …

Lo Que Realmente Significa Magis Y Por Qué Importa, Fr. Barton T. Geger S.J.

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Combining High-Impact Practices To Facilitate Hope For Young Adults Transitioning Into College, Isabelle A. Jenkins, Alison Bryant Ludden, Michelle C. Sterk Barrett

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Today’s societal challenges are causing young people to feel less hopeful about the future, negatively impacting their mental health. Educators are called to address this crisis and provide opportunities for young people to experience hope. Jesuit colleges and universities are uniquely poised to do so given their focus on caring for the whole person and the recent release of the Universal Apostolic Preferences, which prioritize “journeying with youth in the creation of a hope-filled future.” High-impact practices at Jesuit institutions could particularly be effective given the ways in which they intellectually engage students and help students cultivate a sense of …

Imagination Grasping Reality: An Ignatian Foundation For Critical Hope In Jesuit Education, Susan Haarman Dec 2023

Imagination Grasping Reality: An Ignatian Foundation For Critical Hope In Jesuit Education, Susan Haarman

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

As public faith in higher education faces an all time low, the need for hope to both infuse and be a product of our institutions of higher learning is paramount. Rather than a simple hopeful optimism, Henry Giroux conceptualized critical hope - an educated hope that will form students capable and willing to view themselves and the world through a critical lens and then imagine new ways of proceeding that serve the public good and honor human dignity. Jesuit education, at its best, is rooted in expressions of critical hope with a world-affirming commitment to depth of thought and imagination …
