Prions cause fatal neurodegenerative diseases and exhibit remarkable durability, which engenders a wide array of potential exposure scenarios. In chronic wasting disease of deer, elk, moose, and reindeer and in scrapie of sheep and goats, prions are transmitted via environmental routes and the ability of plants to accumulate and subsequently transmit prions has been hypothesized, but not previously demonstrated. Here, we establish the ability of several crop and other plant species to take up prions via their roots and translocate them to above-ground tissues from various growth media including soils. We demonstrate that plants can accumulate prions in above-ground tissues …

Carriers of mutations responsible for dominantly inherited Alzheimer disease provide a unique opportunity to study potential imaging biomarkers. Biomarkers based on routinely acquired clinical MR images, could supplement the extant invasive or logistically challenging) biomarker studies. We used 1104 longitudinal MR, 324 amyloid beta, and 87 tau positron emission tomography imaging sessions from 525 participants enrolled in the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network Observational Study to extract novel imaging metrics representing the mean (μ) and standard deviation (σ) of standardized image intensities of T1-weighted and Fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MR scans. There was an exponential decrease in FLAIR-μ in mutation …

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Hate Speech Directed Towards Iraqi Tv Series’ Performers On Social Media, Mahmood Adil Almuslehi

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

This study investigates online hate speech directed against Iraqi actors and actresses in the online environment of Facebook and Instagram platforms. Fairclough’s (2001) Three-Dimensional Model is employed in this study to unravel the delicate fabric of language used in hate remarks, demonstrating its function in generating discriminatory discourse and falling under the broad purview of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). To provide nuanced insights into the mechanisms by which online hate speech operates and the wider socio-cultural implications it engenders, it also seeks to uncover the latent ideologies and belief systems that underlie hate comments and to illuminate their intersections with …

The Effect Of Bilingualism On Cognitive Development In Children Review Article, Amal Mahmoud Ali Dec 2023

The Effect Of Bilingualism On Cognitive Development In Children Review Article, Amal Mahmoud Ali

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

Bilingualism has become an increasingly common phenomenon in today’s globalized world, with many children growing up exposed to two or more languages. As a result, there has been growing interest among researchers in understanding the impact of bilingualism on thinking development in young and children. Some studies confirmed that bilingualism can have a positive effect on children’s perception cognitive development, particularly in the zones of attention control, Operational memory, and cognitive flexibility. Dual-language learners may also have better Planning and organization skills, such as task-switching and inhibitory control, compared to monolingual children. These cognitive advantages may be due to the …

Retreat Village Design In Letchworth State Park Region: An Architecture Development In A Highly Valued State Park Meets The Triple Bottom Line Of Sustainability, Jing Hua Dec 2023

Retreat Village Design In Letchworth State Park Region: An Architecture Development In A Highly Valued State Park Meets The Triple Bottom Line Of Sustainability, Jing Hua

Theses

Letchworth State Park, located in Livingston and Wyoming counties, New York, renowned as the “Grand Canyon of the East”, is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern United States. However, there are no well-developed leisure centers around or in the park. The lack of good accommodations, in contrast to the availability of restaurants with local character, leisure activities, and other supporting facilities in the area, fails to fully achieve the development potential of the natural scenery of the region. This thesis demonstrates that a retreat complex village that brings people closer to the natural landscape of Letchworth …

Identifying novel cell surface receptors that regulate leukemia cell differentiation and can be targeted to inhibit cellular proliferation is crucial to improve current treatment modalities in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), especially for relapsed or chemotherapy-refractory leukemia. Leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor type B (LILRB) is an immunomodulatory receptor originally found to be expressed in myeloid cells. In this study, we found that LILRB receptors can be induced under inflammatory stimuli and chemotherapy treatment conditions. Blockade of LILRB3 inhibited leukemia cell proliferation and leukemia progression. Additionally, treatment with LILRB3 blocking antibodies upregulated myeloid lineage differentiation transcription factors, including PU.1, C/EBP family, and IRF, …

Low response rates and immune-related adverse events limit the remarkable impact of cancer immunotherapy. To improve clinical outcomes, preclinical studies have shown that combining immunotherapies with N-terminal Hsp90 inhibitors resulted in improved efficacy, even though induction of an extensive heat shock response (HSR) and less than optimal dosing of these inhibitors limited their clinical efficacy as monotherapies. We discovered that the natural product Enniatin A (EnnA) targets Hsp90 and destabilizes its client oncoproteins without inducing an HSR. EnnA triggers immunogenic cell death in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) syngeneic mouse models and exhibits superior antitumor activity compared to Hsp90 N-terminal inhibitors. …

End Of Life In The Ed – Brain Death And Organ Transplantation, Madison Cohen, Donald Penney Dec 2023

End Of Life In The Ed – Brain Death And Organ Transplantation, Madison Cohen, Donald Penney

The Journal of Integrated Primary Care

Every year thousands of Americans die awaiting an organ transplant. While our knowledge and experience with organ transplantation has only improved, organ availability continues to be a major issue due to a lack of suitable donor organs. A large population of organ donors are those who have been clinically diagnosed as brain dead. Brain death is defined as the irreversible loss of all brain and brainstem functions. Despite brainstem functions being lost, mechanical ventilation and perfusion techniques allow for proper organ maintenance. This gives brain-dead individuals a unique opportunity to serve as multiple organ donors. However, due to mistrust of …

Multiple Genre Argument

Research in progress for ENGL 1301: Composition I

Faculty Mentor: W. Scott Cheney, Ph.D.

Standard research papers and five-paragraph essays can train students to blend quotations and organize paragraphs, but advanced writing in the disciplines and the workplace requires much more robust and nuanced thinking. To this end, the Multiple Genre Argument (MGA) pushes students into new writing situations where they create fictional genres to supplement traditional research—a challenging and often confusing task. Learning new skills requires becoming more comfortable with encountering this kind of difficulty and uncertainty. In their book Writing Analytically, David Rosenwasser and Jill …
