Exhibiting Slavery In Australia: Personal Narratives And Legacies, Paul Longley Arthur, Isabel Smith
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The history of slavery has often been located on the same continuum as that of incarceration. This article explores the development of an exhibition representing the legacies of slavery in Australia, analysing Australian and international exhibitions alongside theories of museology, historiography and memory. It begins by considering the growth of slavery memory since the latter twentieth century, and Australia's own slavery heritage. The second half of the article focuses on curatorial directions and decisions taken in the exhibition, which our research team is currently developing in partnership with the Australian National Maritime Museum as part of an Australian Research Council …
Hot Leadership, Cool Leadership: How Education Policies Are Implemented (And Ignored) In Schools, Jeffrey S. Brooks, Melanie C. Brooks
Hot Leadership, Cool Leadership: How Education Policies Are Implemented (And Ignored) In Schools, Jeffrey S. Brooks, Melanie C. Brooks
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The article advances an emergent framework for conceptualizing the relationship between principal leadership and education policy implementation. Based on a qualitative study of school principals and policy implementation in Region X of the Philippines, findings suggested that the way in which policies were interpreted and implemented at the school level was influenced by a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic dynamics and these were shaped in situ by individual, school and community inhibitors and facilitators. These motivations and localized contexts were critical to implementation, and compelled principals to ignore, monitor, or implement education policies as a priority.

Infrared Ship Segmentation Based On Weakly-Supervised And Semi-Supervised Learning, Isa Ali Ibrahim, Abdallah Namoun, Sami Ullah, Hisham Alasmary, Muhammad Waqas, Iftekhar Ahmad
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Existing fully-supervised semantic segmentation methods have achieved good performance. However, they all rely on high-quality pixel-level labels. To minimize the annotation costs, weakly-supervised methods or semi-supervised methods are proposed. When such methods are applied to the infrared ship image segmentation, inaccurate object localization occurs, leading to poor segmentation results. In this paper, we propose an infrared ship segmentation (ISS) method based on weakly-supervised and semi-supervised learning, aiming to improve the performance of ISS by combining the advantages of two learning methods. It uses only image-level labels and a minimal number of pixel-level labels to segment different classes of infrared ships. …

Climate change is of great concern to all age groups but in particular to children. “Simple” climate models have been in place for a long time and can be used effectively with post-16 students. For younger children, modifications are required, and we describe in this paper the development and use of two such models. The first (the Granny Model) is a pictorial version of the model that has been used extensively with primary and early secondary school aged children (14 and younger). The second is an online version of the simple climate model that can be used without recourse to …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This article introduces the integrated behavioral model of mental health help seeking (IBM-HS), a theoretical model for understanding the constructs (e.g., systemic, predisposing, and enabling factors; mental health literacy; illness perceptions; perceived need; stigma; shame; perceived benefits, motivation) that influence people’s decision making around seeking professional mental health care and their ultimate access to formal treatment. The IBM-HS is a help-seeking-specific adaptation of the empirically supported integrated behavioral model and integrative model, which are themselves evolutions of the theory of planned behavior and theory of reasoned action. The IBM-HS posits that help-seeking determinants (e.g., structural forces; cultural influences; past help-seeking …

Authentic Leadership: 20-Year Review Editorial, Andrei A. Lux, Kevin B. Lowe
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Our field has reached a critical juncture. Authentic leadership, which once promised to illuminate how leaders inspire and influence through genuine actions, has become mired in conceptual ambiguity and ideological bias. Much of the research is based on evaluations of behaviour conflated with antecedents and outcomes, presuming an oversimplified, positive view of authenticity. To advance, we must refocus on what authentic leaders actually do – their discrete behaviours – as signals of leadership. In this editorial, we redefine authentic leadership through signalling theory to address unresolved critiques and provide a platform for meaningful progress. We then summarise and synthesise the …

Developing A Weighted Model To Measure Knowledge Diffusion In A Tourism Destination Network, Hossein Raisi, Llandis Barratt-Pugh, Rodolfo Baggio, Gregory Willson, Sam Huang, Kourosh Esfandiar
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Efficient knowledge transfer enhances tourism destination competitiveness. Multiple factors, however, affect knowledge transfer, making it a complex process to quantify. To address this complexity, we developed a quantitative tool by integrating a diffusion model with the major antecedents of knowledge transfer identified in the knowledge management literature. We applied this model in the Western Australian tourism industry and demonstrated its practicality. The proposed model provides a quantitative tool for destination management organizations to monitor, assess and improve the efficiency of knowledge diffusion within their tourism destinations. Such improved knowledge diffusion is critical in strengthening a destination's innovative capabilities and competitiveness.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Gas injection into geological storage sites displaces existing water in rock pore spaces, triggering lateral secondary imbibition. This phenomenon involves the migration of water from areas with higher water saturation to replenish the displaced water. The lateral distance over which this imbibition occurs is critical for understanding injection/withdrawal flow rates and trapped-gas saturation during hydrogen and carbon dioxide geological storage. This study investigates secondary imbibition dynamics in hydrogen and carbon dioxide systems for calcite (representing carbonates) and basalt, considering pressure and temperature effects. Utilizing the modified Lucas-Washburn equation, the results reveal that lateral distance and secondary imbibition rates of water …

Qualitative methods for impact assessment (IA) represent a broad spectrum of approaches that are important for realising effective IA practice. The purpose of this paper is to identify and promote qualitative methods that are available for use in contemporary and future (next-generation) IA processes. From an extensive literature review, an international survey (145 responses), expert interviews (48 interviewees), and a workshop attended by 27 IA practitioners, 17 qualitative method categories were identified. These were further subdivided into three classes: conventional qualitative methods, highly participatory methods, and mixed methods. This article explores how relational approaches to policymaking across multiple levels and sectors of society might enable transformative climate justice. It draws on a unique case study from the state of Western Australia (WA), where climate justice is thwarted by the coloniality of climate politics and the hegemony of the fossil fuel industry. It examines the relational processes of a climate and health community of practice (CoP) in WA that involves people across the health sector, public service, non-government, and community. The CoP had an important role in enabling the WA Government’s public inquiry into climate change and health in …
