Workflow For Integrating Geomechanics, Hydraulic Fracturing, And Reservoir Simulation To Determine Marcellus Shale Horizontal Well Production Potential, Awadh Aljassasi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The main goal of the study was to accurately predict the production potential of Marcellus shale horizontal well with multistage of hydraulic fractures by incorporating geomechanical factors, gas adsorption, hydraulic fracturing treatment data in the reservoir simulation model. To achieve this goal, core plug measurements, well logs, image logs, hydraulic fracture treatment data, and production data were analyzed, combined, and used to develop a reservoir simulation model. Rocks mechanical properties were estimated from the well logs and then correlated with the core measurement to accurately predict the minimum horizontal stress in the reservoir. Adsorption characteristics, porosity, and permeability were estimated …

Comparative Analysis Of Artificial Intelligence And Numerical Reservoir Simulation In Marcellus Shale Wells, Arya Maher Sattari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation addresses the limitations of conventional numerical reservoir simulation techniques in the context of unconventional shale plays and proposes the use of data-driven artificial intelligence (AI) models as a promising alternative. Traditional methods, while providing valuable insights, often rely on simplifying assumptions and are constrained by time, resources, and data quality. The research leverages AI models to handle the complexities of shale behavior more effectively, facilitating accurate predictions and optimizations with less resource expenditure.

Two specific methodologies are investigated for this purpose: traditional numerical reservoir simulations using Computer Modelling Group's GEM reservoir simulation software, and an AI-based Shale Analytics …

Fast Multiscale Functional Estimation In Optimal Emg Placement For Robotic Prosthesis Controllers, Jin Ren, Guohui Song, Lucia Tabacu, Yuesheng Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Electromyogram (EMG) signals play a significant role in decoding muscle contraction information for robotic hand prosthesis controllers. Widely applied decoders require a large amount of EMG signals sensors, resulting in complicated calculations and unsatisfactory predictions. By the biomechanical process of single degree-of-freedom human hand movements, only several EMG signals are essential for accurate predictions. Recently, a novel predictor of hand movements adopted a multistage sequential adaptive functional estimation (SAFE) method based on the historical functional linear model (FLM) to select important EMG signals and provide precise projections.

However, SAFE repeatedly performs matrix-vector multiplications with a dense representation matrix of the …

Statistical Tolerance Regions For Flexible Modeling Paradigms, Yafan Guo Jan 2023

Statistical Tolerance Regions For Flexible Modeling Paradigms, Yafan Guo

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Tolerance intervals in a regression setting allow the user to quantify, with a specified degree of confidence, bounds for a specified proportion of the sampled population when conditioned on a set of covariate values. While methods are available for tolerance intervals in fully-parametric regression settings, the construction of tolerance intervals for semiparametric regression models has been treated in a limited capacity. The first project fills this gap and develops likelihood-based approaches for the construction of pointwise one-sided and two-sided tolerance intervals for semiparametric regression models. A numerical approach is also presented for constructing simultaneous tolerance intervals. An appealing facet of …

Selective Melt Recrystallization Of Acetaminophen Polymorphs Through Environmental Control, Eleanor Lowe Jan 2023

Selective Melt Recrystallization Of Acetaminophen Polymorphs Through Environmental Control, Eleanor Lowe

Honors Theses

Polymorphism is the ability for a molecule to crystallize into multiple different structures in the solid state. The preparation of one polymorph over another is practically important to pharmaceutical development, as properties of polymorphs can vary and impact the drug delivery method. Polymorph outcomes depend heavily on the environment in which the crystal is nucleated, or initially formed. Acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, is one example of a polymorphic compound. Here we use acetaminophen as a model system to better understand primary factors controlling polymorph selection and interconversion. We hypothesize a specific atmospheric environmental factor plays large role in …

Long-Range And Chaotic Active Mixing Of Swimming Microbes In A Vortex Chain Flow, Nghia Le Jan 2023

Long-Range And Chaotic Active Mixing Of Swimming Microbes In A Vortex Chain Flow, Nghia Le

Honors Theses

We present experiments studying the motion and active mixing of swimming mi- crobes in laminar, vortex-dominated fluid flows. We are testing a theory that predicts the existence of swimming invariant manifolds (SwIMs) - invisible, one-way barriers blocking the paths of self-propelled tracers in the flow in one direction. We also pro- pose that the SwIMs together can form chute structures in three-dimensional phase space that facilitate cross-vortex transport of the microbes. We also observe evidence of how these structures promote long-range transport at different non-dimensional velocities (microbe’s velocity relative to flow velocity). Long-range transport is quan- tified by measuring the …

The increased need for renewable energy systems to generate power, store energy, and connect energy storage devices with applications has become a major challenge. Energy storage using batteries is most appropriate for energy sources like solar, wind, etc. A non-isolated three-port DC–DC-converter energy conversion unit is implemented feeding the brushless DCmotor drive. In this paper, a non-isolated three-port converter is designed and simulated for battery energy storage, interfaced with an output drive. Based on the requirements, the power extracted from the solar panel during the daytime is used to charge the batteries through the three-port converter. The proposed three-port converter …

Higher-Order Cumulants And Correlation Functions Of Proton Multiplicity Distributions In √Snn = 3 Gev Au+Au Collisions At The Rhic Star Experiment, The Star Collaboration Jan 2023

Higher-Order Cumulants And Correlation Functions Of Proton Multiplicity Distributions In √Snn = 3 Gev Au+Au Collisions At The Rhic Star Experiment, The Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report a measurement of cumulants and correlation functions of event-by-event proton multiplicity distributions from fixed-target Au+Au collisions at √sNN = 3 GeV measured by the STAR experiment. Protons are identified within the rapidity (y) and transverse momentum (pT ) region −0.9 < y < 0 and 0.4 < pT < 2.0 GeV/c in the center-of-mass frame. A systematic analysis of the proton cumulants and correlation functions up to sixth order as well as the corresponding ratios as a function of the collision centrality, pT , and y are presented. The effect of pileup and initial volume fluctuations on these observables and the respective corrections are discussed in detail. The results are compared to calculations from the hadronic transport UrQMD model as well as a hydrodynamic model. In the most central 5% collisions, the value of proton cumulant ratio C4/C2 is negative, drastically different from the values observed in Au+Au collisions at higher energies. Compared to model calculations including lattice QCD, a hadronic transport model, and a hydrodynamic model, the strong suppression in the ratio of C4/C2 at 3 GeV Au+Au collisions indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions.

Dynamic Luminescence Of Lead Doped Calcium Zinc Germanate For Anti-Counterfeiting, Levi Spencer Jan 2023

Dynamic Luminescence Of Lead Doped Calcium Zinc Germanate For Anti-Counterfeiting, Levi Spencer

Dissertations and Theses

As counterfeited goods appear in the consumer market through various trade routes, unsuspecting buyers are left with products that are potentially dangerous and in poor quality. Products intended for the automotive and aerospace industry are often counterfeited due to their easy market accessibility. Once these products make their way into the supply chain, it leaves the end users with a significant risk due to voided warranties and inferior product quality and design. Therefore, advanced anti-counterfeiting measures need to be developed to assure the products are genuine, as well as allow the end users to authenticate the product. Luminescent materials have …

Enforcement Penalties At The Itc, Andrea R. Hugill, John C. Jarosz, Katherine D. Cappaert Jan 2023

Enforcement Penalties At The Itc, Andrea R. Hugill, John C. Jarosz, Katherine D. Cappaert

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The U.S. International Trade Commission (“ITC” or “Commission”) has grown in importance as a venue for U.S. companies to pursue intellectual property (“IP”) violators and to block the sale or importation of goods from overseas that infringe U.S. IP rights. Once a violation of the Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 is found, an order halting further infringement, including importation, is almost always entered. In theory, potentially sizeable penalties may be imposed on entities that do not comply with the terms of an import restriction. In practice, the terms of an import restriction are almost always honored, but …

Basic Science Engineering

In this paper, Weibull-Linear Exponential distribution (WLED) has been investigated whether being it is a well-fit distribution to a clinical real data. These data represent the duration of remission achieved by a certain drug used in the treatment of leukemia for a group of patients. The statistical inference approach is used to estimate the parameters of the WLED through the set of the fitted data. The estimated parameters are utilized to evaluate the survival and hazard functions and hence assessing the treatment method through forecasting the duration of remission times of patients. A two-sample prediction approach has been applied to …

Refining The Use Of Stable Isotope Analysis In Detecting Wildlife Laundering, Kevin Guilfoyle Jan 2023

Refining The Use Of Stable Isotope Analysis In Detecting Wildlife Laundering, Kevin Guilfoyle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The international wildlife trade has caused significant declines in wild populations. Captive breeding can reduce the pressure on wild populations caused by overcollection, but if not properly monitored, wildlife laundering can lead to further population declines. Improving the forensic ability to detect wildlife laundering will assist in monitoring the wildlife trade and enforcing regulations, thereby aiding recovery of wild populations. Stable isotope analysis has grown in importance as a forensic tool, but improvements are needed. Here, stable isotope analysis (δ13C) on eggshells of captive bred and wild sourced island apple snails (Pomacea maculata) distinguished between the two; eggshells of captive …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Electrocatalysis plays a central role in the development of renewable energy technologies as it enables direct conversion between renewable electricity and chemical energy. To design efficient electrocatalysts, it is essential to understand the relationship between the structure and the activity of electrocatalytic materials. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is a scanning probe technique capable of imaging local electrocatalytic activity under operating conditions, of which the spatial resolution depends on the size and shape of the probe. Compared to commercial SECM probes which have limited resolution capabilities, I have developed novel nanoelectrode probes by etching sharp platinum tips followed by electropolymerization coating …

Comparing Hydrogen Peroxide And Sodium Perborate Ultraviolet Advanced Oxidation Processes For 1,4-Dioxane Removal From Wastewater Effluent, Tulsi Shukla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Ultraviolet advanced oxidation processes were compared using sodium perborate (UV/NaBO3 AOP) or hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2 AOP) for 1,4-dioxane removal from tertiary wastewater effluent. Both UV/H2O2 and UV/NaBO3 AOPs were also tested with the addition of acetic acid. Results revealed that sodium perborate performed similarly to hydrogen peroxide – the UV/NaBO3 AOP with 6 milligrams per liter (mg/L) as H2O2 resulted in 43.9 percent 1,4-dioxane removal, while an equivalent UV/H2O2 AOP showed 42.8 percent removal. Although the oxidants performed similarly, NaBO3 is an average of 3.3 times more expensive than H2O2. However, the solid form of NaBO3 can provide a major …

Probing Endothelial Cell Mechanics Under Disturbed Fluid Flow, Jingwen Wu Jan 2023

Probing Endothelial Cell Mechanics Under Disturbed Fluid Flow, Jingwen Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Endothelial cells, which form the inner layer of the vasculature, interact with the extracellular matrix (ECM) by exerting mechanical contractile cell-substrate stress called tractions and cell-cell stresses called intercellular stresses. This cellular mechanical behavior involves many fundamental biological processes, including cell migration, differentiation, angiogenesis, and wound healing. Also, the inner surface of the vasculature, where endothelial cells reside, is constantly exposed to various fluid flows. The most variable fluid flow regimes occur primarily within branching regions of the vasculature. Endothelial cells residing within these regions experience disturbed flow, which consists of irregular flow patterns and extreme wall shear stress gradients. …

Low Energy Photon Detection, Tianyi Guo Jan 2023

Low Energy Photon Detection, Tianyi Guo

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Detecting long wave infrared (LWIR) light at room temperature has posed a persistent challenge due to the low energy of photons. The pursuit of an affordable, high-performance LWIR camera capable of room temperature detection has spanned several decades. In the realm of contemporary LWIR detectors, they can be broadly classified into two categories: cooled and uncooled detectors. Cooled detectors, such as MCT detectors, excel in terms of high detectivity and fast response times. However, their reliance on cryogenic cooling significantly escalates their cost and restricts their practical applications. In contrast, uncooled detectors, exemplified by microbolometers, are capable of functioning at …
