Learning Disabilities And The Impact Of Accommodation Programs In Post-Secondary Education, Jacqueline Persaud Jan 2023

Learning Disabilities And The Impact Of Accommodation Programs In Post-Secondary Education, Jacqueline Persaud

Honors Undergraduate Theses

As enrollment rates for students with learning disabilities steadily increase, post-secondary institutions must become more inclusive. Current literature reveals a gap in studies between post-secondary education and student views on access programs. Our endeavor focused on this community. The survey was distributed using SONA and by the Student Accessibility Services Office via Qualtrics. Our study looked at 312 participants, aged from 18 - over 30 years old and who varied in sex. More satisfaction with accommodations equated to more academic competence towards goals. However, the results showed less satisfaction with personal lives and self-acceptance. This is possibly due to participants …

This US score is similar to, or lower than, the scores of other countries where spending is lower. Considering reading performance statistics from the international PISA assessment and the inconclusive results from reading comprehension studies across media, the concern arose whether today’s high school students are well prepared for college level …

Graph-Based Acoustic Clustering And Classification, Justin Youngho Sunu Jan 2023

Graph-Based Acoustic Clustering And Classification, Justin Youngho Sunu

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The rapid growth of audio data collection in various domains necessitates advanced techniquesfor efficient analysis and classification. This dissertation proposes new approaches for categorizing acoustic data, using both unsupervised and semi-supervised learning methods. Starting with raw audio, we preprocess the signal to segment it into time windows, each of which we consider as an independent data point. We use the short-time Fourier transform to describe the signal in a given time window as a set of Fourier coefficients. We interpret the resulting frequency signature as a high-dimensional feature description of each data point. We then develop a graph-based approach for …

When Congress Passes The Buck: How Russia’S Invasion Of Ukraine Exposed Flaws In Granting The President Sanctioning Powers, Artem M. Joukov, Samantha M. Caspar Jan 2023

When Congress Passes The Buck: How Russia’S Invasion Of Ukraine Exposed Flaws In Granting The President Sanctioning Powers, Artem M. Joukov, Samantha M. Caspar

Seattle University Law Review

The United States (U.S.) Constitution provides few limitations on endowing the Executive Branch with powers to govern foreign trade, which was initially granted to the Legislature. In a world where global trade dominates, the power over foreign trade can be more important than the power over domestic matters. Leaving unrestrained trade authority to the Executive Branch may cause hazards for Americans and foreigners alike. Russia’s war in Ukraine demonstrates the flaws in permitting the Executive Branch to unilaterally sanction foreign states. This Article demonstrates how reactive Executive Branch policies infringed on the welfare and safety of American citizens and foreigners …

Design And Field-Scale Demonstration Of The Buoyant-Kill Process For Restoring Integrity Of Wells With Sustained Casing Pressure, Efecan Demirci, Andrew Wojtanowicz Jan 2023

Design And Field-Scale Demonstration Of The Buoyant-Kill Process For Restoring Integrity Of Wells With Sustained Casing Pressure, Efecan Demirci, Andrew Wojtanowicz

Faculty Publications

Sustained Casing Pressure (SCP) is the persistent casinghead pressure resulting from the well’s annular integrity loss and migration of gas above the leaking cement sheath. Downhole—intervention methods for SCP removal employ workover rigs to access and plug off the leaking annulus at depth from within the well. The inexpensive rig-less method of Buoyant Kill involves surface injection of immiscible heavy fluid at the casinghead into the well’s annulus to replace the annular fluid column above the gas-leaking cement and stop gas migration. Laboratory and pilot-size testing have shown feasibility of the method. Presented here, is a field-scale demonstration experiment conducted …

A Characterization Of Two-Dimensional Buchsbaum Matching Complexes, Bennet Goeckner, Fran Herr, Legrand Jones, Rowan Rowlands

Mathematics: Faculty Scholarship

The matching complex M (G) of a graph G is the set of all matchings in G. A

Buchsbaum simplicial complex is a generalization of both a homology manifold and

a Cohen–Macaulay complex. We give a complete characterization of the graphs G

for which M (G) is a two-dimensional Buchsbaum complex. As an intermediate step,

we determine which graphs have matching complexes that are themselves connected

graphs.

Lnl Polycategories And Doctrines Of Linear Logic, Michael Shulman Jan 2023

Lnl Polycategories And Doctrines Of Linear Logic, Michael Shulman

Mathematics: Faculty Scholarship

We define and study LNL polycategories, which abstract the judgmental structure of classical linear logic with exponentials. Many existing structures can be represented as LNL polycategories, including LNL adjunctions, linear exponential comonads, LNL multicategories, IL-indexed categories, linearly distributive categories with storage, commutative and strong monads, CBPV-structures, models of polarized calculi, Freyd-categories, and skew multicategories, as well as ordinary cartesian, symmetric, and planar multicategories and monoidal categories, symmetric polycategories, and linearly distributive and *-autonomous categories. To study such classes of structures uniformly, we define a notion of LNL doctrine, such that each of these classes of structures can be identified with …

Changes In The Microbiome Of The Sea Anemone Exaiptasia Diaphana During Bleaching From Short-Term Thermal Elevation, Jamison R. Sydnor, Jamie Lopez, Gordon V. Wolfe, Lisa Ott, Cawa Tran

Biology: Faculty Scholarship

We examined the response of microbial communities in the model sea anemone Exaiptasia diaphana (Aiptasia) to short-term thermal elevation. Through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we characterized the microbiomes of symbiotic (with algal symbionts) and aposymbiotic (bleached) anemones under ambient (27°C) and heat-stressed (34°C) conditions for 8-10 days, using both replicated endpoint and non-replicated time-course approaches. Consistent with prior studies, we observed a stable abundance of bacteria from the families Alteromonadaceae and Rhodobacteraceae, though with wide variation among individual anemones. We observed that symbiotic state conferred a larger impact on the microbiome than heat stress, implying the microbiome may play a …

Artificial Intelligence Incorporated Into Audio Analysis Of Electronic Music, Ned Fellenor Jan 2023

Artificial Intelligence Incorporated Into Audio Analysis Of Electronic Music, Ned Fellenor

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

In recent decades the live music performance and DJ industry has undergone a transition from analog to digital music being the norm. Audio analysis and mixing software is now a necessity for modern DJs and their preferred equipment. However, it still stands that DJs must thoroughly learn their tracks and decide which transition well together in order to produce a smooth mix. This project looks at how machine learning-based systems can aid DJs in this process; it raises questions about the use of artificial intelligence within a heavily subjective form of live performance, and its potential effectiveness in this field. …

Financial Crises As A Phenomenon Of Multiple Equilibria And How To Select Among Them, Nicolas Mäder Jan 2023

Financial Crises As A Phenomenon Of Multiple Equilibria And How To Select Among Them, Nicolas Mäder

School of Business: Faculty Scholarship

When equilibrium is indeterminate (i.e., not unique), applied theory often obtains uniqueness either via ad hoc sunspots or via global games. This paper highlights the relative merits of a third selection mechanism—best-response dynamics (BRD)—in the context of various financial crisis frameworks. For example, in the context of a bank run, selection via BRD is preferred (to ad hoc sunspots) because it provides an explicit coordination narrative and (to global games) because it accounts for the fact that depositors realistically may decide to join or leave a bank's queue upon observing its length.

In the early 2000s, our primarily undergraduate, white institution (PUI/PWI), began recruiting and enrolling higher numbers of students of color and first-generation college students. However, like many of our peer institutions, our established pedagogies and mindsets did not provide these students an educational experience to enable them to persist and thrive in STEM. Realizing the need to systematically address our lack of inclusivity in science majors, in 2012 faculty from multiple disciplines developed the Science, Math, and Research Training (SMART) program. Here, we describe an educational innovation, originally funded by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, designed to …

Individual-Based Models Of Avian Migration For Estimating Behavioural Traits And Predicting Ecological Interactions, Benjamin A. Tonelli, Alan E. Zelin, Donald Dearborn, Morgan W. Tingley Jan 2023

Individual-Based Models Of Avian Migration For Estimating Behavioural Traits And Predicting Ecological Interactions, Benjamin A. Tonelli, Alan E. Zelin, Donald Dearborn, Morgan W. Tingley

All Faculty Scholarship

Rapid advances in the field of movement ecology have led to increasing insight into both the population-level abundance patterns and individual-level behaviour of migratory species. Despite this progress, research questions that require scaling individual-level understanding of the behaviour of migrating organisms to the population level remain difficult to investigate. To bridge this gap, we introduce a generalizable framework for training full-annual cycle individual-based models of migratory movements by combining information from tracking studies and species occurrence records. Focusing on migratory birds, we call this method: Models of Individual Movement of Avian Species (MIMAS). We implement MIMAS to design individual-based models …
