Investigating The Kshb V246s Mutation In The Kshab Protein Complex Found In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Malika Cruickshank

Undergraduate Review

This research centered on studying the interactions between the KshA and KshB subunits of the 3-ketosteroid-9α hydroxylase (KshAB) protein complex found in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis). Interactions between the two protein subunits were computationally explored using the protein docking program ClusPro and a location in the KshB subunit at Val 246 was found to be in proximity with nearby amino acids in the KshA subunit. This was determined to be a possible location for docking the protein complex. Val 246 of KshB was mutated into a serine residue to explore changes in the electron transfer pathway upon disruption of this …

Exploration Of Electron Dynamics In A Strong Field By Time Dependent Configuration Interaction With A Complex Absorbing Potential, Paul Hoerner Jan 2023

Exploration Of Electron Dynamics In A Strong Field By Time Dependent Configuration Interaction With A Complex Absorbing Potential, Paul Hoerner

Wayne State University Dissertations

Strong field electron dynamics are a quickly developing field of study in physical chemistry. In order to better understand experimental observations, there is a need for computational tools to simulate electron dynamics in a strong field. Due to the nature of strong electric fields, this requires the solving of the time dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). Various methods have been used to solve the TDSE in a strong field. In order to look at molecular systems while accurately treating the underlying physics, a method that balances computational affordability with theoretical rigor is necessary. The chosen method that matches these criteria is …

Cultural Values And Maintaining The Status Quo, Andrew Clapper, Adam Smiley, Michael Oliver Jan 2023

Cultural Values And Maintaining The Status Quo, Andrew Clapper, Adam Smiley, Michael Oliver

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Research on status quo bias suggests that all else equal, people prefer to maintain the current state of the world rather than making changes (Samuelson & Zeckhauser, 1988). Relatedly, people tend to value objects more when they possess them than when they do not, in what is known as the “endowment effect” (Kahneman et al., 1991; Morewedge et al., 2015). However, little attention has been paid to reaction times in making decisions in the presence of a status quo or a possessed object. Our study examines the individual differences which affect reaction times in selecting between status quo and novel …

The Effect Of Eye Contact On Auditory Recall, Sara Grace Lill, Isha Kapoor, Oluwatoni Akanda, Khanh Nguyen

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Memory is at the basis of perception and provides functionality to our daily lives. Auditory stimulation has been shown to bias eye movement and improve memory (Liping, et. al, 2021), but the mechanisms behind the guidance of eye movements remain unclear (Higgins, et. al, 2014). This study investigates the correlation between eye contact and memory, focusing on recall, and exploring eye contact’s potential to enhance recall during both immediate and delayed assessments (Craft 21 Recall). Thirty undergraduate students from Belmont University, completed the Craft 21 Recall assessment after watching a video featuring a virtual speaker reading a short story. The …

Does Birth Order Have An Effect On An Individual’S Conscientiousness?, Micah D. Wilson, Ashely Richmond, Emma Sells, Scovs Major, Waldron Collins

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Looking at familial relationships, specifically between sibling dynamics, has been focused on in many different angles in the field of psychology. Psychologists seek to understand the relationships between siblings, and how the relationships affect their bond, personality, and social life. Past studies have shown that siblings do tend to bounce off of each other, such as older sibling control having more of an effect in conflicts rather than in intimacy (Tucker & Updegraff). We hypothesized that the oldest siblings would clean up after themselves or not make a mess, middle children would clean up after themselves, the youngest would make …

The Influence Of Parental Behavior On Emerging Adult Egocentrism, Lilly E. Rogers, Nicole Buttrey, Monica Bennett, Olivia Harris

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Existing research indicates that adolescent egocentrism, people of adolescent age being overly interested in oneself, is influenced by numerous factors, including identity development and parental behavior (Scarfo, 1993). Though it has been shown that this link between perceived parental behavior and adolescent egocentrism exists (Adams & Jones, 1982), research has not yet examined this relationship in emerging adults. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship between parental behavior/support and egocentrism in emerging adults, while controlling for personality. Emerging adult college students (N = 46), completed a Qualtrics survey that measured imaginary audience (a component of …

Historical And Potential Future Climate Of Extreme Daily Precipitation Over The Contiguous United States Using Convection-Permitting Simulations, Sylvia Stinnett

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The impacts of anthropogenic climate change will be felt most strongly through changes in hazards such as extreme precipitation. The potential for extreme precipitation changes—both increases and decreases—may have significant societal impacts (e.g., agriculture production, loss of life and property). However, limited research has quantified future projected changes in extreme precipitation due to computational limitations and considerable time expenditure for convection-permitting simulations of substantial duration. This project sought to analyze changes in extreme daily precipitation—defined as the 99th percentile daily accumulated value—due to climate change in the contiguous United States (CONUS) using a dynamically downscaled and convection-permitting regional climate modeling framework. …

The study evaluates compatibility of stabilizers with dye doped liquid crystal (LC) scaffolds that are used in electronically dimmable materials. The photodegradation of the materials was investigated and suitable stabilizers were evaluated to slow the degradation process. Various types of benzotriazole-based stabilizers were evaluated for stabilizing the liquid crystals. Based on spin trapping experiments, radicals generated upon UV exposure is likely responsible for the degradation of the system. The radical generation is competitively inhibited by the addition of stabilizers.

Alternating Current Electrolysis For Amine Functionalization And Hydrogen Isotope Exchange, Disni Gunasekera

Wayne State University Dissertations

Electrochemical organic synthesis is experiencing a renaissance driven by the increasing demand for green chemistry and engineering in the pharmaceutical industry. Synthetic organic electrochemical methods can be divided into three types: anodic, cathodic, and paired electrolysis. Paired electrolysis, in which two desirable half-reactions are performedsimultaneously at the two electrodes, is mostly underdeveloped. However, paired electrolysis can be technologically significant because it not only improves energy efficiency by using both electrodes but also provides a unique reaction environment where two redox-opposite reactions of substrates take place in the same pot. A major challenge for paired electrolysis is that the difficulties associated …

How Nonmarket Externalities Affect The U.S. Business Dynamism: An Economic Approach To Drug Epidemic, Chukwudi Ikwueze Jan 2023

How Nonmarket Externalities Affect The U.S. Business Dynamism: An Economic Approach To Drug Epidemic, Chukwudi Ikwueze

Pennsylvania Economic Review

Businesses thrive best in an environment devoid of constraints, including those resulting from third-party activities with longstanding economic underpinnings. While existing research has extensively explored how costs and benefits emanating from businesses affect third parties, in the form of market externality, little attention has been given to understanding how costs and benefits arising from third-party activities influence businesses. To fill this gap, this paper aims to introduce the concept of nonmarket externality, which represents the influence of third-party activities on businesses, and use it to examine whether third-party activities associated with the drug epidemic influence the U.S. business dynamism. The …

Turbulent Shockwave/Boundary-Layer Interactions Generated By Sharp Swept Fins, Dustin Levi Otten Jan 2023

Turbulent Shockwave/Boundary-Layer Interactions Generated By Sharp Swept Fins, Dustin Levi Otten

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The shock/turbulent boundary layer interaction (STBLI) generated by a sharp fin with a 60 deg leading edge sweep mounted above a flat plate at Mach 2.5 was studied numerically. Incipient separation due to this highly swept fin was determined by varying the fin angle to the incoming freestream. The effect of a small fin/plate gap on STBLI incipient separation was established. Sweeping the fin increases the deflection required for incipient separation as the sweep reduces the interaction strength. A gap causes flow leakage under the fin, further reducing the interaction strength on the windward side. The incipient angle of attack …

Experimental Study On Thermal Performance Of Metal Foam Heat Sinks In Single Phase Liquid Immersion Cooling, Manish Kumawat Jan 2023

Experimental Study On Thermal Performance Of Metal Foam Heat Sinks In Single Phase Liquid Immersion Cooling, Manish Kumawat

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

In 1965, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore made the observation that the transistor counts on a chip double with a frequency of approximately every two years. This development resulted in more compact and potent ICs. However, the amount of heat produced on a chip increased proportionally with the number of transistors. Later, in the early 2000s, Dennard Scaling broke down. Transistors became so small that leakage currents (unwanted currents that flow within the transistor) emerged as a significant issue, and they contributed substantially to power consumption and heat generation. These tightly packed transistors produced heat, which decreased their performance and shortened …
