Cultural Values And Maintaining The Status Quo, Andrew Clapper, Adam Smiley, Michael Oliver
Cultural Values And Maintaining The Status Quo, Andrew Clapper, Adam Smiley, Michael Oliver
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Research on status quo bias suggests that all else equal, people prefer to maintain the current state of the world rather than making changes (Samuelson & Zeckhauser, 1988). Relatedly, people tend to value objects more when they possess them than when they do not, in what is known as the “endowment effect” (Kahneman et al., 1991; Morewedge et al., 2015). However, little attention has been paid to reaction times in making decisions in the presence of a status quo or a possessed object. Our study examines the individual differences which affect reaction times in selecting between status quo and novel …

The Effect Of Eye Contact On Auditory Recall, Sara Grace Lill, Isha Kapoor, Oluwatoni Akanda, Khanh Nguyen
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Memory is at the basis of perception and provides functionality to our daily lives. Auditory stimulation has been shown to bias eye movement and improve memory (Liping, et. al, 2021), but the mechanisms behind the guidance of eye movements remain unclear (Higgins, et. al, 2014). This study investigates the correlation between eye contact and memory, focusing on recall, and exploring eye contact’s potential to enhance recall during both immediate and delayed assessments (Craft 21 Recall). Thirty undergraduate students from Belmont University, completed the Craft 21 Recall assessment after watching a video featuring a virtual speaker reading a short story. The …

Tennessee Brewconomy: Navigating The Wholesale Beer Tax Landscape, Lauren E. Dansbury
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
In 2013, Tennessee transitioned from a price-based wholesale tax model to a per barrelage assessment. This research delves into the repercussions of this tax reform, assessing its impact on the brewing and wholesale distribution sectors. Despite the shift, Tennessee maintains the nation's highest wholesale beer tax for 16 consecutive years. The study examines the opportunity costs associated with this elevated tax, exploring alternative uses for the funds. Utilizing data on annual revenue collected by wholesalers from 2019 to 2022, segmented by city and county, the research provides actionable insights advocating for a reduction in the wholesale tax. The argument posits …

Looking at familial relationships, specifically between sibling dynamics, has been focused on in many different angles in the field of psychology. Psychologists seek to understand the relationships between siblings, and how the relationships affect their bond, personality, and social life. Past studies have shown that siblings do tend to bounce off of each other, such as older sibling control having more of an effect in conflicts rather than in intimacy (Tucker & Updegraff). We hypothesized that the oldest siblings would clean up after themselves or not make a mess, middle children would clean up after themselves, the youngest would make …

The Influence Of Parental Behavior On Emerging Adult Egocentrism, Lilly E. Rogers, Nicole Buttrey, Monica Bennett, Olivia Harris
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Existing research indicates that adolescent egocentrism, people of adolescent age being overly interested in oneself, is influenced by numerous factors, including identity development and parental behavior (Scarfo, 1993). Though it has been shown that this link between perceived parental behavior and adolescent egocentrism exists (Adams & Jones, 1982), research has not yet examined this relationship in emerging adults. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship between parental behavior/support and egocentrism in emerging adults, while controlling for personality. Emerging adult college students (N = 46), completed a Qualtrics survey that measured imaginary audience (a component of …

Historical And Potential Future Climate Of Extreme Daily Precipitation Over The Contiguous United States Using Convection-Permitting Simulations, Sylvia Stinnett
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The impacts of anthropogenic climate change will be felt most strongly through changes in hazards such as extreme precipitation. The potential for extreme precipitation changes—both increases and decreases—may have significant societal impacts (e.g., agriculture production, loss of life and property). However, limited research has quantified future projected changes in extreme precipitation due to computational limitations and considerable time expenditure for convection-permitting simulations of substantial duration. This project sought to analyze changes in extreme daily precipitation—defined as the 99th percentile daily accumulated value—due to climate change in the contiguous United States (CONUS) using a dynamically downscaled and convection-permitting regional climate modeling framework. …

The study evaluates compatibility of stabilizers with dye doped liquid crystal (LC) scaffolds that are used in electronically dimmable materials. The photodegradation of the materials was investigated and suitable stabilizers were evaluated to slow the degradation process. Various types of benzotriazole-based stabilizers were evaluated for stabilizing the liquid crystals. Based on spin trapping experiments, radicals generated upon UV exposure is likely responsible for the degradation of the system. The radical generation is competitively inhibited by the addition of stabilizers.

Alternating Current Electrolysis For Amine Functionalization And Hydrogen Isotope Exchange, Disni Gunasekera
Wayne State University Dissertations
Electrochemical organic synthesis is experiencing a renaissance driven by the increasing demand for green chemistry and engineering in the pharmaceutical industry. Synthetic organic electrochemical methods can be divided into three types: anodic, cathodic, and paired electrolysis. Paired electrolysis, in which two desirable half-reactions are performedsimultaneously at the two electrodes, is mostly underdeveloped. However, paired electrolysis can be technologically significant because it not only improves energy efficiency by using both electrodes but also provides a unique reaction environment where two redox-opposite reactions of substrates take place in the same pot. A major challenge for paired electrolysis is that the difficulties associated …

How Nonmarket Externalities Affect The U.S. Business Dynamism: An Economic Approach To Drug Epidemic, Chukwudi Ikwueze
Pennsylvania Economic Review
Businesses thrive best in an environment devoid of constraints, including those resulting from third-party activities with longstanding economic underpinnings. While existing research has extensively explored how costs and benefits emanating from businesses affect third parties, in the form of market externality, little attention has been given to understanding how costs and benefits arising from third-party activities influence businesses. To fill this gap, this paper aims to introduce the concept of nonmarket externality, which represents the influence of third-party activities on businesses, and use it to examine whether third-party activities associated with the drug epidemic influence the U.S. business dynamism. The …

Synthesis Of Putative Microcystin-Lr Degradation Products And Full Macrocyclic Cyanopeptide, Mahesh Kumar Yadab
Wayne State University Dissertations
This thesis primarily focuses on synthesizing fragments of microcystin-LR, which is a natural product, with the aim of establishing them as analytical standards for investigating the biodegradation pathways of MC-LR. Despite of the substantial interest in synthesizing, isolating, and degrading Microcystins over the past few decades, the availability of high-purity microcystin standards at known concentration for quantitative analysis of using LC-MS/MS remains limited. The synthesis of the proposed MC-LR fragments employs the Fmoc/t-Bu protecting group strategy to prevent isomerization. Additionally, novel methods for the total synthesis of N-Boc-Adda are explored, incorporating atom-economic approaches, cross-metathesis, and oxidative boron Heck reactions. The …

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Arc flash events could result in injuries, fatalities, and lead to severe medical expenses, equipment replacement cost, and even litigation, fines, and loss of business. Such events could also tremendously traumatize the personnel psychosocially and neurologically. Therefore, it is critical to accurately understand the potential arc flash hazards from all the real applications. Yet, due to the random complex nature of arc flash events and great number of uncertain variables involved, there are challenges to provide mathematical models for equipment designers in determining the arc-flash fault current and the incident energy of various types of events. The early arc flash …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Despite significant advancements in computer capabilities for numerical simulations, engineers continue to face limitations when dealing with large-scale full-order model(FOM) simulations. These simulations often necessitate repeated solves, such as those encountered in inverse design, real-time solution prediction, error quantification, and solver convergence, among others. To address these challenges, reduced order modeling (ROM) has emerged as a valuable approach. This thesis focuses on the development of an ROM framework that combines Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) with machine learning techniques. This integrated approach is applied to a diverse range of heat transfer and fluid flow inverse design problems. POD constructs optimal sets …

This research tackles the collaboration of group of uncrewed aerial systems (UASs) where the constraint on individual vehicles requires a varying level of coordination and cooperation. Such cooperation can be in the form of a …
Turbulent Shockwave/Boundary-Layer Interactions Generated By Sharp Swept Fins, Dustin Levi Otten
Turbulent Shockwave/Boundary-Layer Interactions Generated By Sharp Swept Fins, Dustin Levi Otten
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The shock/turbulent boundary layer interaction (STBLI) generated by a sharp fin with a 60 deg leading edge sweep mounted above a flat plate at Mach 2.5 was studied numerically. Incipient separation due to this highly swept fin was determined by varying the fin angle to the incoming freestream. The effect of a small fin/plate gap on STBLI incipient separation was established. Sweeping the fin increases the deflection required for incipient separation as the sweep reduces the interaction strength. A gap causes flow leakage under the fin, further reducing the interaction strength on the windward side. The incipient angle of attack …

In 1965, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore made the observation that the transistor counts on a chip double with a frequency of approximately every two years. This development resulted in more compact and potent ICs. However, the amount of heat produced on a chip increased proportionally with the number of transistors. Later, in the early 2000s, Dennard Scaling broke down. Transistors became so small that leakage currents (unwanted currents that flow within the transistor) emerged as a significant issue, and they contributed substantially to power consumption and heat generation. These tightly packed transistors produced heat, which decreased their performance and shortened …

Inkjet Printing Of Sers-Based Inks For Covert Anti-Counterfeiting Labels, Erin E. Schnetzer
Dissertations and Theses
Millions of counterfeit products are produced every year, which negatively impacts the global economy, public health, and human safety. Current anti-counterfeiting methods include holograms, watermarks, microprinting, and QR codes. QR codes are a two-dimensional version of a barcode, thus they can store more information. Different types of inks such as thermochromic ink and invisible UV ink are widely used in making anti-counterfeiting labels. Most of these inks have specific changes in optical properties with external stimulations, and these changes are usually associated with broad bands in the visible region. Such broad bands result in a low information capacity that can …

In the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM), the Louisiana Shelf (LS) and Mississippi Bight (MB) subregions are influenced by eutrophication to varying degrees. Despite recognition that dissolved silicon may regulate diatom productivity in the nGoM, there is only one published data set reporting biogenic silica (bSiO2) production rates for each subregion. We report that bSiO2 production rates on the LS and MB are high and appear to be controlled by different nutrients among seasons. Despite exceptional upper trophic level biomass regionally, which suggests significant primary production by diatoms (as in other systems), gross euphotic-zone integrated bSiO2 production rates are lower …
