An Exploratory Constructivist Grounded Theory Study: How Secondary School Science Teachers Interpret Students’ Scientific Models That Are Comprised Of Drawing Activities, Alecia M. Redway Jan 2023

An Exploratory Constructivist Grounded Theory Study: How Secondary School Science Teachers Interpret Students’ Scientific Models That Are Comprised Of Drawing Activities, Alecia M. Redway

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Extant literature lacks an explanation of the thought processes used by secondary school science teachers to interpret students’ scientific models that are comprised of drawing activities. In this exploratory study, a constructivist grounded theory (CGT) was developed to generate an interpretive understanding. The CGT was generated from observations, interviews, and document analyses of five research participants consisting of secondary school science teachers from lower New York State. To generate a CGT, concepts, terms, assumptions, and definitions from selected theories—decolonizing methodologies theory (DMT), visual semiotic theory (VST), and cultural studies theory (CST)—collectively provided a fresh onto-epistemological lens for initially examining and …

The Impacts Of Tracking In Middle School Mathematics, With Particular Emphasis On Small Private Schools, Jared Hanson Jan 2023

The Impacts Of Tracking In Middle School Mathematics, With Particular Emphasis On Small Private Schools, Jared Hanson

Teaching and Learning (MA) Theses

Most studies of the efficacy and equity of tracking in middle school mathematics focus on programs implemented in large public schools or entire school districts. They do not consider the impacts of how tracking might affect middle school students at a small private school. This study therefore seeks to determine how the theories, findings, and conclusions in the existing research may be applied in the context of a small private school. It begins with an extensive review of the literature that discusses the history and impacts of tracking, focusing on academic achievement, self-esteem and self-concept, and discrimination along racial and …

Progress In 7sk Ribonucleoprotein Structural Biology, Momodou B. Camara, Amr M. Sobeh, Catherine D. Eichhorn

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

The 7SK ribonucleoprotein (RNP) is a dynamic and multifunctional regulator of RNA Polymerase II (RNAPII) transcription in metazoa. Comprised of the noncoding 7SK RNA, core proteins, and numerous accessory proteins, the most wellknown 7SK RNP function is the sequestration and inactivation of the positive transcription elongation factor b (P-TEFb). More recently, 7SK RNP has been shown to regulate RNAPII transcription through P-TEFb-independent pathways. Due to its fundamental role in cellular function, dysregulation has been linked with human diseases including cancers, heart disease, developmental disorders, and viral infection. Significant advances in 7SK RNP structural biology have improved our understanding of 7SK …

A Complex Record Of Last Interglacial Sea-Level History And Paleozoogeography, Santa Rosa Island, Channel Islands National Park, California, Usa, Daniel R. Muhs, Lindsey T. Groves, Kathleen R. Simmons, R. Randall Schumann, Scott A. Minor

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Studies of marine terraces and their fossils can yield important information about sea level history, tectonic uplift rates, and paleozoogeography, but some aspects of terrace history, particularly with regard to their fossil record, are not clearly understood. Marine terraces are well preserved on Santa Rosa Island, California, and the island is situated near a major marine faunal boundary. Two prominent low-elevation terraces record the ~80 ka (marine isotope stage [MIS] 5a) and ~120 ka (MIS 5e) high-sea stands, based on U-series dating of fossil corals and aminostratigraphic correlation to dated localities elsewhere in California and Baja California. Low uplift rates …

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Honors education has a rich history of preparing students to be good communicators, to think deeply and broadly, to collaborate effectively, and to be ethical citizens engaged in communities. The challenges of contemporary society, however, call for something more. To engage effectively with complex societal issues, students must identify and collaborate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders in the community, understand and employ systems thinking, value highly diverse perspectives, and develop communication skills for conflict management. To develop these additional skills and perspectives, the authors invoke the concept of fourth space as the deep engagement of honors students in …

Conclusion

Whether or not advisors choose to use the formal MSLQ instrument as a tool in advising, they can contribute to their advisees’ academic success by listening for the presence or absence of the motivational constructs it measures in advisee comments and conversation and by responding in ways that develop positive motivations and encourage management of those constructs that may present barriers to success. Because intrinsic goal orientation, task value, control of learning beliefs, and self-efficacy can be learned, and extrinsic goal orientation and test anxiety can be lessened and managed, advisors equipped with the knowledge and tools to evaluate …

Cliques In Realization Graphs, Michael D. Barrus, Nathan Haronian Jan 2023

Cliques In Realization Graphs, Michael D. Barrus, Nathan Haronian

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The realization graph G(d)" role="presentation"> of a degree sequence d is the graph whose vertices are labeled realizations of d, where edges join realizations that differ by swapping a single pair of edges. Barrus (2016) [3] characterized d for which G(d)" role="presentation"> is triangle-free. Here, for any n≥4" role="presentation">, we describe a structure in realizations of d that exactly determines whether G(d)" role="presentation"> has a clique of size n. As a consequence we determine the degree sequences d for which G(d)" role="presentation"> is a complete graph on n vertices.

Drought Influences Annual Survival Of Painted Turtles In Western Nebraska, Allyson N. Beard, Larkin Powell Jan 2023

Drought Influences Annual Survival Of Painted Turtles In Western Nebraska, Allyson N. Beard, Larkin Powell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Aquatic habitats in the Great Plains of North America have increased risk of droughts under climate forecasts. Droughts have the potential to influence the population dynamics of pond turtles, and long-term studies are useful to assess the impact of climatic variation on turtles. We compiled twelve years of mark-recapture data for painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) captured in a pond in Keith County, Nebraska during 2005–2016 that included two periods of drought. We used a robust design analysis to investigate influences on population size, annual survival, temporary immigration, and capture probability. Estimates of the annual population size ranged from 92 (CI: …

Engineering Education In Hong Kong Secondary Schools - The Applied Learning Course Approach, Ken Hui Jan 2023

Engineering Education In Hong Kong Secondary Schools - The Applied Learning Course Approach, Ken Hui

Staff Publications

In Hong Kong, the efficacy of engineering education in secondary schools is always difficult to measure. This is mainly because there are limited engineering-oriented subjects and few teachers with backgrounds in engineering. Engineering education is often infused into the curriculum of secondary schools through science, technology and mathematics (STM) subjects. Students’ involvement in engineering related school-based and extracurricular activities are limited. Only a few technical schools in Hong Kong are offering engineering-oriented subjects such as Electronics & Electricity and Technology Fundamentals.

Some previous studies have identified that the lack of engineering education in secondary schools may affect the students’ aspiration …

A Filtered Milne-Simpson Ode Method With Enhanced Stability Properties, Ariyadasa Aluthge, Scott Sarra Jan 2023

A Filtered Milne-Simpson Ode Method With Enhanced Stability Properties, Ariyadasa Aluthge, Scott Sarra

Mathematics Faculty Research

The Milne-Simpson method is a two-step implicit linear multistep method for the numerical solution of ODEs that obtains the theoretically highest order of convergence for such a method. The stability region of the method is only an interval on the imaginary axis and the method is classified as weakly stable which causes non-physical oscillations to appear in numerical solutions. For this reason, the method is seldom used in applications. This work examines filtering techniques that improve the stability properties of the Milne-Simpson method while retaining its fourth-order convergence rate. The resulting filtered Milne-Simpson method is attractive as a method of …

Masculine And Feminine Facial Muscle Reactivity In Response To Observation, Caroline Avery, Micah D. Wilson, Waldron Collins, Sara Beam Jan 2023

Masculine And Feminine Facial Muscle Reactivity In Response To Observation, Caroline Avery, Micah D. Wilson, Waldron Collins, Sara Beam

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Individuals are consciously and unconsciously motivated by the need to fit in with social situations in order to maintain health and upkeep appearances (Hale et al., 2005). The literature has shown that individuals tend to change their facial expressions, particularly their zygomatic and ocularis muscles, in response to social situations, and they tend to exhibit an elevated heart rate (Brandenburg et al., 2022; Linnunsalo 2023). We predict females will exhibit these traits more due to their increased empathy and natural facial reactivity caused by the social pressures that dictate display rules of emotion by gender (Pollack, 1998; Adams Jr., 2014). …

Synthesis Of A Novel Terbium(Iii) Complex For Application In Metal Nanoparticle Surface Modification, Lauralee E. Hurst, Davon Ferrara, Justin Stace

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Lanthanide ions, such as terbium(III), exhibit bright luminescence when bound to organic ligands which strongly absorb light. This property has been used in creating chemical sensors or luminescent tags for microscopy. Complexes centered with terbium(III) exhibit a yellow-green luminescence upon excitation by shortwave ultraviolet light. In this work, a bifunctional ligand, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4mba), was chosen to selectively coordinate terbium(III) to the oxygens of the acid functional group, leaving the thiol group available for another compound. Thiol groups are effectively used in surface coordination to noble metal nanoparticles (NP). In efforts to create a novel 4mba-terbium(III)-NP system, a one pot …

Some Fractional Dirac Systems, Yüksel Yalçinkaya Jan 2023

Some Fractional Dirac Systems, Yüksel Yalçinkaya

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this work, including $\alpha\epsilon(0,1)$; we examined the Dirac system in the frame which includes$\ \alpha$ order right and left Reimann-Liouville fractional integrals and derivatives with exponential kernels, and the Dirac system which includes $\alpha$ order right and left Caputo fractional integrals and derivatives with exponential kernels. Furthermore, we have given some definitions and properties for discrete exponential kernels and their associated fractional sums and fractional differences, and we have studied discrete fractional Dirac systems.
