Advising With Purpose: Utilizing The Motivation For College Success Model, Stephanie Veltman Santarosa

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Conclusion

Whether or not advisors choose to use the formal MSLQ instrument as a tool in advising, they can contribute to their advisees’ academic success by listening for the presence or absence of the motivational constructs it measures in advisee comments and conversation and by responding in ways that develop positive motivations and encourage management of those constructs that may present barriers to success. Because intrinsic goal orientation, task value, control of learning beliefs, and self-efficacy can be learned, and extrinsic goal orientation and test anxiety can be lessened and managed, advisors equipped with the knowledge and tools to evaluate …

Cliques In Realization Graphs, Michael D. Barrus, Nathan Haronian Jan 2023

Cliques In Realization Graphs, Michael D. Barrus, Nathan Haronian

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The realization graph G(d)" role="presentation"> of a degree sequence d is the graph whose vertices are labeled realizations of d, where edges join realizations that differ by swapping a single pair of edges. Barrus (2016) [3] characterized d for which G(d)" role="presentation"> is triangle-free. Here, for any n≥4" role="presentation">, we describe a structure in realizations of d that exactly determines whether G(d)" role="presentation"> has a clique of size n. As a consequence we determine the degree sequences d for which G(d)" role="presentation"> is a complete graph on n vertices.

Drought Influences Annual Survival Of Painted Turtles In Western Nebraska, Allyson N. Beard, Larkin Powell Jan 2023

Drought Influences Annual Survival Of Painted Turtles In Western Nebraska, Allyson N. Beard, Larkin Powell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Aquatic habitats in the Great Plains of North America have increased risk of droughts under climate forecasts. Droughts have the potential to influence the population dynamics of pond turtles, and long-term studies are useful to assess the impact of climatic variation on turtles. We compiled twelve years of mark-recapture data for painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) captured in a pond in Keith County, Nebraska during 2005–2016 that included two periods of drought. We used a robust design analysis to investigate influences on population size, annual survival, temporary immigration, and capture probability. Estimates of the annual population size ranged from 92 (CI: …

Engineering Education In Hong Kong Secondary Schools - The Applied Learning Course Approach, Ken Hui Jan 2023

Engineering Education In Hong Kong Secondary Schools - The Applied Learning Course Approach, Ken Hui

Staff Publications

In Hong Kong, the efficacy of engineering education in secondary schools is always difficult to measure. This is mainly because there are limited engineering-oriented subjects and few teachers with backgrounds in engineering. Engineering education is often infused into the curriculum of secondary schools through science, technology and mathematics (STM) subjects. Students’ involvement in engineering related school-based and extracurricular activities are limited. Only a few technical schools in Hong Kong are offering engineering-oriented subjects such as Electronics & Electricity and Technology Fundamentals.

Some previous studies have identified that the lack of engineering education in secondary schools may affect the students’ aspiration …

A Filtered Milne-Simpson Ode Method With Enhanced Stability Properties, Ariyadasa Aluthge, Scott Sarra Jan 2023

A Filtered Milne-Simpson Ode Method With Enhanced Stability Properties, Ariyadasa Aluthge, Scott Sarra

Mathematics Faculty Research

The Milne-Simpson method is a two-step implicit linear multistep method for the numerical solution of ODEs that obtains the theoretically highest order of convergence for such a method. The stability region of the method is only an interval on the imaginary axis and the method is classified as weakly stable which causes non-physical oscillations to appear in numerical solutions. For this reason, the method is seldom used in applications. This work examines filtering techniques that improve the stability properties of the Milne-Simpson method while retaining its fourth-order convergence rate. The resulting filtered Milne-Simpson method is attractive as a method of …

Masculine And Feminine Facial Muscle Reactivity In Response To Observation, Caroline Avery, Micah D. Wilson, Waldron Collins, Sara Beam Jan 2023

Masculine And Feminine Facial Muscle Reactivity In Response To Observation, Caroline Avery, Micah D. Wilson, Waldron Collins, Sara Beam

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Individuals are consciously and unconsciously motivated by the need to fit in with social situations in order to maintain health and upkeep appearances (Hale et al., 2005). The literature has shown that individuals tend to change their facial expressions, particularly their zygomatic and ocularis muscles, in response to social situations, and they tend to exhibit an elevated heart rate (Brandenburg et al., 2022; Linnunsalo 2023). We predict females will exhibit these traits more due to their increased empathy and natural facial reactivity caused by the social pressures that dictate display rules of emotion by gender (Pollack, 1998; Adams Jr., 2014). …

Synthesis Of A Novel Terbium(Iii) Complex For Application In Metal Nanoparticle Surface Modification, Lauralee E. Hurst, Davon Ferrara, Justin Stace

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Lanthanide ions, such as terbium(III), exhibit bright luminescence when bound to organic ligands which strongly absorb light. This property has been used in creating chemical sensors or luminescent tags for microscopy. Complexes centered with terbium(III) exhibit a yellow-green luminescence upon excitation by shortwave ultraviolet light. In this work, a bifunctional ligand, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4mba), was chosen to selectively coordinate terbium(III) to the oxygens of the acid functional group, leaving the thiol group available for another compound. Thiol groups are effectively used in surface coordination to noble metal nanoparticles (NP). In efforts to create a novel 4mba-terbium(III)-NP system, a one pot …

Some Fractional Dirac Systems, Yüksel Yalçinkaya

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this work, including $\alpha\epsilon(0,1)$; we examined the Dirac system in the frame which includes$\ \alpha$ order right and left Reimann-Liouville fractional integrals and derivatives with exponential kernels, and the Dirac system which includes $\alpha$ order right and left Caputo fractional integrals and derivatives with exponential kernels. Furthermore, we have given some definitions and properties for discrete exponential kernels and their associated fractional sums and fractional differences, and we have studied discrete fractional Dirac systems.

Biharmonic Pnmcv Submanifolds In Euclidean 5-Space, Rüya Şen, Nuretti̇n Cenk Turgay

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this article, we study 3-dimensional biconservative and biharmonic submanifolds of $\mathbb{E}^5$ with parallel normalized mean curvature vector (PNMCV). First, we prove that the principal curvartures and principal directions of biconservative PNMCV isometric immersions into $\mathbb{E}^5$ can be determined intrinsically. Then, we complete the proof of Chen's biharmonic conjecture for PNMCV submanifolds of $\mathbb{E}^5$.

Asymptotic Behaviour Of Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, Shi-Zhuo Looi Jan 2023

Asymptotic Behaviour Of Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, Shi-Zhuo Looi

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to a range of linear and nonlinear hyperbolic equations on asymptotically flat spacetimes. We develop a comprehensive framework for the analysis of pointwise decay of linear and nonlinear wave equations on asymptotically flat manifolds of three space dimensions that are allowed to be time-varying or nonstationary, including quasilinear wave equations. The Minkowski space and time-varying perturbations thereof are included among these spacetimes. A result on scattering for a nonlinear wave equation with finite-energy solutions on nonstationary spacetimes is presented. This work was motivated in part by the investigation of more precise asymptotic behaviour …

Investigating Changes In Permeability Caused By The Transport And Retention Of Microplastics In Saturated Sand Columns, Iliansherry Santiago Jan 2023

Investigating Changes In Permeability Caused By The Transport And Retention Of Microplastics In Saturated Sand Columns, Iliansherry Santiago

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Microplastics (MPs), plastic particles present and continuously moving in our environment, represent a contaminant of global concern to the scientific community and society. MPs are particles less than 5 mm and are ubiquitous in our surroundings and the environment. MPs have been detected in oceans, soils, freshwater, drinking water and groundwater. MPs are considered contaminants of emerging concern (CEC), as they contain toxic components and serve as carriers for other contaminants that may affect the ecology and human health. Limited laboratory and field experiments demonstrate that MPs are transported and retained in porous media of a groundwater aquifer. A research …

Integrated Vs. Specialized Farming Systems For Sustainable Food Production: Comparative Analysis Of Systems’ Technical Efficiency In Nebraska, Maroua Afi, Jay Parsons Jan 2023

Integrated Vs. Specialized Farming Systems For Sustainable Food Production: Comparative Analysis Of Systems’ Technical Efficiency In Nebraska, Maroua Afi, Jay Parsons

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Complementarities between crops and livestock production have the potential to increase input use efficiency and maintain a diversified livelihood. This paper uses non-parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) to assess the technical efficiency (TE) of integrated crop–livestock systems (ICLS) compared to specialized cropping and specialized livestock systems in the state of Nebraska, in the central United States. We classify each county of Nebraska into one of three systems according to their dominant agricultural production revenues. We use DEA to measure the TE of each county compared, first, to a group production frontier (in-system comparison) and second, to a metafrontier (cross-system comparison). …

On Approximating Total Variation Distance, Arnab Bhattacharyya, Sutanu Gayen, Kuldeep S. Meel, Dimitrios Myrisiotis, A. Pavan, N. V. Vinodchandran

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Total variation distance (TV distance) is a fundamental notion of distance between probability distributions. In this work, we introduce and study the problem of computing the TV distance of two product distributions over the domain {0, 1}n. In particular, we establish the following results.

  1. The problem of exactly computing the TV distance of two product distributions is #P-complete. This is in stark contrast with other distance measures such as KL, Chisquare, and Hellinger which tensorize over the marginals leading to efficient algorithms.
  2. There is a fully polynomial-time deterministic approximation scheme (FPTAS) for computing the TV distance of two …

An Efficient And Low-Cost Method To Create High-Density Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers In Cvd Diamond For Sensing Applications., Prem Bahadur Karki, Rupak Timalsina, Mohammadjavad Dowran, Ayodimeji E. Aregbesola, Abdelghani Laraoui, Kapildeb Ambal

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The negatively charged Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV-) center in diamond is one of the most versatile and robust quantum sensors suitable for quantum technologies, including magnetic field and temperature sensors. For precision sensing applications, densely packed NV- centers within a small volume are preferable due to benefiting from 1/√𝑁 sensitivity enhancement (N is the number of sensing NV centers) and efficient excitation of NV centers. However, methods for quickly and efficiently forming high concentrations of NV- centers are in development stage. We report an efficient, low-cost method for creating high-density NV- centers production from a relatively …
