Digital Solutions Observed In Clinical Trials: A Formative Feasibility Scoping Review, Taylor M Harrison, Sungrim Moon, Liwei Wang, Sunyang Fu, Hongfang Liu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Growing digital access accelerates digital transformation of clinical trials where digital solutions (DSs) are increasingly and widely leveraged for improving trial efficiency, effectiveness, and accessibility. Many factors impact DS success including technology barriers, privacy concerns, or user engagement activities. It is unclear how those factors are considered or reported in the literature. Here, we perform a formative feasibility scoping review to identify gaps impacting DS quality and reproducibility in trials. Articles containing digital terms published in English from 2009 to 2022 were collected (n=4,167). 130 articles published between 2016 and 2022 were randomly selected for full-text review. Eligible articles (n=100) …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Multiple algorithms with variable performance have been developed to identify dementia using combinations of billing codes and medication data that are widely available from electronic health records (EHR). If the characteristics of misclassified patients are clearly identified, modifying existing algorithms to improve performance may be possible.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the performance of a code-based algorithm to identify dementia cases in the population-based Mayo Clinic Study of Aging (MCSA) where dementia diagnosis (i.e., reference standard) is actively assessed through routine follow-up and describe the characteristics of persons incorrectly categorized.

METHODS: There were 5,316 participants (age at baseline (mean (SD)): 73.3 …

Keystroke-Dynamics For Parkinson's Disease Signs Detection In An At-Home Uncontrolled Population: A New Benchmark And Method, Shikha Tripathi, Teresa Arroyo-Gallego, Luca Giancardo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease disorder in the world. A prompt diagnosis would enable clinical trials for disease-modifying neuroprotective therapies. Recent research efforts have unveiled imaging and blood markers that have the potential to be used to identify PD patients promptly, however, the idiopathic nature of PD makes these tests very hard to scale to the general population. To this end, we need an easily deployable tool that would enable screening for PD signs in the general population. In this work, we propose a new set of features based on keystroke dynamics, i.e., the time …

Segmentation Of Acute Stroke Infarct Core Using Image-Level Labels On Ct-Angiography, Luca Giancardo, Arash Niktabe, Laura Ocasio, Rania Abdelkhaleq, Sergio Salazar-Marioni, Sunil A Sheth

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Acute ischemic stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the world. Treatment decisions, especially around emergent revascularization procedures, rely heavily on size and location of the infarct core. Currently, accurate assessment of this measure is challenging. While MRI-DWI is considered the gold standard, its availability is limited for most patients suffering from stroke. Another well-studied imaging modality is CT-Perfusion (CTP) which is much more common than MRI-DWI in acute stroke care, but not as precise as MRI-DWI, and it is still unavailable in many stroke hospitals. A method to determine infarct core using CT-Angiography (CTA), a much …

Multidrug Resistance In The Standardized Treatment Of Colon Cancer Harboring A Rare Fibrosarcoma B-Type (Braf) Pn581i Mutation: A Case Report, Xiaoyan Wang, Chenyi Zhao, Yang Gong, Ying Wang, Feng Guo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BRAF non-V600 mutations are a distinct molecular subset of colorectal cancer (CRC) that has little to no clinical similarity to the BRAF V600 mutations. It is generally considered that the BRAF non-V600 mutations correlate with better survival of CRC patients. In this report, we present an unusual case of that a midlife female patient who was initially diagnosed with stage IIIC colon cancer, and multiple metastases were found 25 months after radical surgery. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) revealed the BRAF p.N581I (c.1742A>T) mutation. She received chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. However, the disease progressed rapidly with rare metastasis of the …

Viewing laboratory test results is patients' most frequent activity when accessing patient portals, but lab results can be very confusing for patients. Previous research has explored various ways to present lab results, but few have attempted to provide tailored information support based on individual patient's medical context. In this study, we collected and annotated interpretations of textual lab result in 251 health articles about laboratory tests from AHealthyMe.com. Then we evaluated transformer-based language models including BioBERT, ClinicalBERT, RoBERTa, and PubMedBERT for recognizing key terms and their types. Using BioPortal's term search API, we mapped the annotated terms to concepts in …

The Current Status And Future Prospects For Conversion Therapy In The Treatment Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Jinfeng Bai, Ming Huang, Bohan Song, Wei Luo, Rong Ding

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. In China, most HCC patients are diagnosed with advanced disease and in these cases surgery is challenging. Conversion therapy can be used to change unresectable HCC into resectable disease and is a potential breakthrough treatment strategy. The resection rate for unresectable advanced HCC has recently improved as a growing number of patients have benefited from conversion therapy. While conversion therapy is at an early stage of development, progress in patient selection, optimum treatment methods, and the timing of surgery have the potential to deliver significant benefits. In …

The Health-Promoting Effects And The Mechanism Of Intermittent Fasting, Simin Liu, Min Zeng, Weixi Wan, Ming Huang, Xiang Li, Zixian Xie, Shang Wang, Yu Cai

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an eating pattern in which individuals go extended periods with little or no energy intake after consuming regular food in intervening periods. IF has several health-promoting effects. It can effectively reduce weight, fasting insulin levels, and blood glucose levels. It can also increase the antitumor activity of medicines and cause improvement in the case of neurological diseases, such as memory deficit, to achieve enhanced metabolic function and prolonged longevity. Additionally, IF activates several biological pathways to induce autophagy, encourages cell renewal, prevents cancer cells from multiplying and spreading, and delays senescence. However, IF has specific adverse …

Emulate Randomized Clinical Trials Using Heterogeneous Treatment Effect Estimation For Personalized Treatments: Methodology Review And Benchmark, Yaobin Ling, Pulakesh Upadhyaya, Luyao Chen, Xiaoqian Jiang, Yejin Kim

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Big data and (deep) machine learning have been ambitious tools in digital medicine, but these tools focus mainly on association. Intervention in medicine is about the causal effects. The average treatment effect has long been studied as a measure of causal effect, assuming that all populations have the same effect size. However, no "one-size-fits-all" treatment seems to work in some complex diseases. Treatment effects may vary by patient. Estimating heterogeneous treatment effects (HTE) may have a high impact on developing personalized treatment. Lots of advanced machine learning models for estimating HTE have emerged in recent years, but there has been …

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the etiologic agent of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), has caused a global health crisis. Despite ongoing efforts to treat patients, there is no universal prevention or cure available. One of the feasible approaches will be identifying the key genes from SARS-CoV-2-infected cells. SARS-CoV-2-infected in vitro model, allows easy control of the experimental conditions, obtaining reproducible results, and monitoring of infection progression. Currently, accumulating RNA-seq data from SARS-CoV-2 in vitro models urgently needs systematic translation and interpretation. To fill this gap, we built COVIDanno, COVID-19 annotation in humans, available at http://biomedbdc.wchscu.cn/COVIDanno/. The aim …

Chapter 14- How Instructors Can Help Students Embrace A Growth Mindset: The Importance Of Applying Theory To Practice, Antje R. H. Graul, Ayse Sapci

Habits of Mind

In today’s educational system, it is more important than ever to set students up for success in their future careers and professional development. “I really liked how the classes were more than lectures,” wrote one student in a recent course evaluation. But how can classes be more than “just” lectures? And how can a growth mindset be implemented to prepare students for their future careers? While many courses lend themselves well to teaching applicable skills, instructors assigned to theory-based courses often feel challenged to convey the importance of understanding the theory—or the usefulness of theoretical frameworks—to their students.

Safe Trajectory Generation Of Robotic End-Effector Poses For Rpod Emulation Using Bézier Curves, Jason K. Schmidt, Francisco J. Franquiz, David C. Huish

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

System-level operational testing of space vehicles and payloads designed to execute rendezvous, proximity operations, and docking (RPOD) missions are currently tested using hardware-in-the-loop and processor-in- the-loop simulations. Despite the advantages offered by such test platforms, they rely on models, propagators, and scene generators to approximate synthetic on-orbit scenarios. This work details the hardware, software, and algorithmic implementation of a testbed designed to replicate on-orbit dynamics and illumination, as seen by sensors and payloads onboard spacecraft.

The testbed, owned by the Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) and called the Hardware-in-the-Loop Operations Laboratory (HALO Lab), enables technology demonstrations for RPOD hardware and software. …

Model Predictive Control Switching Strategy For Safe Cluster Formation Flying, Tyson Smith, John Akagi, Greg Droge Jan 2023

Model Predictive Control Switching Strategy For Safe Cluster Formation Flying, Tyson Smith, John Akagi, Greg Droge

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

This paper presents a Model Predictive Control (MPC) based control scheme that is used in conjunction with a sphere polytope boundary constraint and the Hill-Clohessey-Whiltshire (HCW) equations to maintain a desired trajectory of a cluster of spacecraft while also allowing freedom to maneuver within the allowable bounds. The operational polytope boundaries enable the predictive framework of the MPC to be used to make small maneuvers to avoid debris or achieve mission objectives. The boundaries are designed such that no two agents have overlapping regions, allowing the vehicles to execute avoidance strategies without continually maintaining the trajectories of other agents. The …

The non-singlet helicity quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the nucleon are determined from lattice QCD, by jointly leveraging pseudo-distributions and the distillation spatial smearing paradigm. A Lorentz decomposition of appropriately isolated space-like matrix elements reveals pseudo-distributions that contain information on the leading-twist helicity PDFs, as well as an invariant amplitude that induces an additional z2 contamination of the leading-twist signal. An analysis of the short-distance behavior of the space-like matrix elements using matching coefficients computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) exposes the desired PDF up to this additional z2 contamination. Due to the non-conservation of the axial current, …

Basics Of Factorization In A Scalar Yukawa Field Theory, F. Aslan, L. Gamberg, J.O. Gonzalez-Hernandez, T. Rainaldi, T. C. Rogers

Physics Faculty Publications

The factorization theorems of QCD apply equally well to most simple quantum field theories that require renormalization but where direct calculations are much more straightforward. Working with these simpler theories is convenient for stress testing the limits of the factorization program and for examining general properties of the parton density functions or other correlation functions that might be necessary for a factorized description of a process. With this view in mind, we review the steps of factorization in a real scalar Yukawa field theory for both deep inelastic scattering and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections. In the case of …

Investigation Of The Multilayer Shielding Effect Through Nbtin-Ain Coated Bulk Niobium, Iresha Harshani Senevirathne, D. R. Beverstock, A-M Valente-Feliciano, Alex Gurevich, Jean R. Delayen Jan 2023

Investigation Of The Multilayer Shielding Effect Through Nbtin-Ain Coated Bulk Niobium, Iresha Harshani Senevirathne, D. R. Beverstock, A-M Valente-Feliciano, Alex Gurevich, Jean R. Delayen

Physics Faculty Publications

We report measurements of the dc field onset Bp of magnetic flux penetration through NbTiN-AlN coating on bulk niobium using the Hall probe experimental setup. The measurements of Bp reveal the multilayer shielding effect on bulk niobium under high magnetic fields at cryogenic temperatures. We observed a significant enhancement in Bp for the NbTiN-AlN coated Nb samples as compared to bare Nb samples. The observed dependence of Bp on the coating thickness is consistent with theoretical predictions.

Analytic Continuation Of The Relativistic Three-Particle Scattering Amplitudes, Sebastian M. Dawid, Md Habib E. Islam, Raúl A. Briceño

Physics Faculty Publications

We investigate the relativistic scattering of three identical scalar bosons interacting via pair-wise interactions. Extending techniques from the nonrelativistic three-body scattering theory, we provide a detailed and general prescription for solving and analytically continuing integral equations describing the three-body reactions. We use these techniques to study a system with zero angular momenta described by a single scattering length leading to a bound state in a two-body subchannel. We obtain bound-state-particle and three-particle amplitudes in the previously unexplored kinematical regime; in particular, for real energies below elastic thresholds and complex energies in the physical and unphysical Riemann sheets. We extract positions …

Full Treatment Of The Thrust Distribution In Single Inclusive E⁺E⁻ → H X Processes, M. Boglione, Andrea Simonelli

Physics Faculty Publications

Extending the transverse momentum dependent factorization to thrust dependent observables entails a series of difficulties, ultimately associated to the behavior of soft radiation. As a consequence, the definition of the transverse momentum dependent functions has to be revised, while preserving (and possibly extending) their universality properties. Moreover, the regularization of the rapidity divergences generates non trivial correlations between rapidity and thrust. In this paper, we show how to deal with these correlations in a consistent treatment of the thrust dependence of e+e− → h X cross section, where the hadron transverse momentum is measured with respect to …

A thorough understanding of neutrino–nucleus scattering physics is crucial for the successful execution of the entire US neutrino physics program. Neutrino–nucleus interaction constitutes one of the biggest systematic uncertainties in neutrino experiments—both at intermediate energies affecting long-baseline deep underground neutrino experiment, as well as at low energies affecting coherent scattering neutrino program—and could well be the difference between achieving or missing discovery level precision. To this end, electron–nucleus scattering experiments provide vital information to test, assess and validate different nuclear models and event generators intended to test, assess and validate different nuclear models and event generators intended to be used …

A calculation is performed of the parity-violating polarizations in the external electric field, which are associated with the electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) and magnetic quadrupole moment (MQM) of the 175Lu nucleus, as well as the determination of the rovibrational structure for the 175LuOH+ cation. Beyond the bending of the molecule, the slight effect of the stretching of the distance between Lu and OH is taken into account. This study is required for the preparation of the experiment and for the extraction of the eEDM and MQM values of 175Lu from future measurements.

The 2015 CS-CASH (Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health, 2015) Injury Surveillance Surveys showed that around 19% of injuries to agricultural producers are related to tractors or large agricultural machinery, yet only a limited number of studies are found that address tools and methods for monitoring safety behaviors of agricultural machinery operators in real-time. The current safety behavior monitoring approaches require an in-person presence, which can be both time- and cost-inefficient, and the other available methods lack a feedback element to alert operators in realtime. As a result, the research presented in this study aimed to develop an …

1. Niche differentiation and intraguild predation (IGP) can allow ecologically similar species to coexist, although it is unclear which coexistence mechanism predominates in consumer communities. Until now, a limited ability to quantify diets from metabarcoding data has precluded the use of sequencing data to determine the relative importance of these mechanisms.

2. Here, we pair a recent metabarcoding quantification approach with stable isotope analysis to examine diet composition in a wolf spider community.

3. We compare the prevalence of resource partitioning and IGP in these spiders and test whether factors that influence foraging performance, including individual identity, morphology, prey community …
