Active Photonic Integrated Devices And Circuits On Thin-Film Lithium Niobate Platform, Ehsan Ordouie
Active Photonic Integrated Devices And Circuits On Thin-Film Lithium Niobate Platform, Ehsan Ordouie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis delves into innovative active photonic integrated devices and circuits on the thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform, focusing on their applications and potential future advancements. We introduce a new family of electrooptic modulators (EOMs), the Four-Phase Electrooptic Modulators (FEOMs), which are fabricated using the TFLN platform. These devices effectively mitigate bandwidth and dynamic-range constraints in optical communication systems by reducing dispersion penalties and common-mode noises. Their functionality is demonstrated in a photonic time-stretch system. A dual-polarization variant further exemplifies the mitigation of both dispersion penalties and common-mode noises in long-haul communication links, marking significant strides towards the practical implementation …
Clustering Of Diverse Multiplex Networks, Yaxuan Wang
Clustering Of Diverse Multiplex Networks, Yaxuan Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This dissertation introduces the DIverse MultiPLEx Generalized Dot Product Graph (DIMPLE-GDPG) network model where all layers of the network have the same collection of nodes and follow the Generalized Dot Product Graph (GDPG) model. In addition, all layers can be partitioned into groups such that the layers in the same group are embedded in the same ambient subspace but otherwise all matrices of connection probabilities can be different. In common particular cases, where layers of the network follow the Stochastic Block Model (SBM) and Degree Corrected Block Model (DCBM), this setting implies that the groups of layers have common community …

Using Homology Modeling And Computational Protein-Peptide Design To Identify Potential Inhibitors Of Cish Binding To Plc-Gamma 1 In The T-Cell Activation Pathway Of Blood Cancers, Evelyn Paquette
Chemistry Master’s Theses
The CISH gene product (protein) SH2 domain binds to PLC Gamma l and inhibits the normal function of the T-cell signaling pathway and immune response. This is a pressing concern in tumorous blood cancers as the body's immune system cannot fight against a growing cancer. Dr. Steven Ansell from The Mayo Clinic hypothesized that there must be a way to create a molecule that will bind more readily to the CISH SH2 domain, mitigating the inhibitory impact of CISH on T-cell .
Homology modeling and computational peptide design were used to investigate the Ansell hypothesis. Fir t, homology models of …

“Any Means Necessary To Refuse Erasure By Algorithm:” Lillian-Yvonne Bertram’S Travesty Generator, Zach Whalen
“Any Means Necessary To Refuse Erasure By Algorithm:” Lillian-Yvonne Bertram’S Travesty Generator, Zach Whalen
Communication & Digital Studies Articles
Lillian-Yvonne Bertram's 2019 book of poetry is titled Travesty Generator in reference to Hugh Kenner and Joseph O'Rourke's Pascal program to “fabricate pseudo-text” by producing text such that each n-length string of characters in the output occurs at the same frequency as in the source text. Whereas for Kenner and O'Rourke, labeling their work a “travesty” is a hyperbolic tease or a literary burlesque, for Bertram, the travesty is the political reality of racism in America. For each of the works Travesty Generator, Bertram uses the generators of computer poetry to critique, resist, and replace narratives of oppression and to …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The construction industry is undergoing a paradigm shift towards sustainable practices, one of which is circular economy (CE). Adopting the CE concept is a complex undertaking, which is characterized by a set of indicators capturing its key aspects. Various tools and techniques are employed to implement this novel concept. An essential step of CE implementation is evaluating the circularity of buildings. This research develops a BIM-based digital platform for assessing the whole building circularity indicators (WBCI) of modular steel projects. The platform is designed to assist in computing these indicators, which requires diverse data inputs and complex interrelated equations. The …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Microplastics (MPs) are persistent environmental pollutants introduced through various factors. Understanding the spatial distribution characteristics of MPs is crucial for developing effective mitigation strategies. However, the relationship between MPs and their covariables remains largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated the abundance of MPs in 40 soil samples from different land-use types in the Bang Pakong Watershed and assessed the applicability of machine learning models for predicting the spatial distribution patterns of soil MPs. The samples were divided into three categories: 1.2 µm-500 µm, 500 µm-1 mm, and 1-2 mm. They were analyzed using ZnCl2 density separation, H2O2 digestion process, …

Image segmentation is typically done through supervised learning. Supervised learning requires labeled data, which is costly and time-consuming to acquire. However, unlabeled data is abundant. This research presents an application of the state-of-the-art unsupervised instance segmentation method FreeSOLO in satellite images and benchmarks the method in iSAID, CrowdAI, and PASTIS datasets. The method achieved 0.9%AP50 in the iSAID dataset, 3.1%AP50 on the CrowdAI dataset, and 1.1%AP50 on the PASTIS dataset. On large objects, it achieved 1.2%AP50 in the iSAID dataset and 3.5%AP50 in the CrowdAI dataset. The method was also tested in the UAH periphery …
Adaptive Boundary Layer Sliding Mode Control For Multi-Input-Multi-Output Systems, Tiffany Lodge
Adaptive Boundary Layer Sliding Mode Control For Multi-Input-Multi-Output Systems, Tiffany Lodge
Theses
When a nonlinear system is controlled using the conventional sliding mode control, the system input will create a high-frequency chatter, which can damage the system's actuators. The most common method used to prevent chattering is the introduction of a constant boundary layer, but if the disturbance is high, then chattering can still happen in the system input. In this thesis, a sliding mode controller with an adaptive boundary layer is proposed for multi-input-multi-output systems that prevent chattering, even if the disturbance is high. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in suppressing chatter, a robotic arm was modeled in …

The Need For International Ai Activities Monitoring, Parviz Partow-Navid, Ludwig Slusky
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This paper focuses primarily on the need to monitor the risks arising from the dual-use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Dual-use AI technology capability makes it applicable for defense systems and consequently may pose significant security risks, both intentional and unintentional, with the national and international scope of effects. While domestic use of AI remains the prerogative of individual countries, the unregulated and nonmonitored use of AI with international implications presents a specific concern. An international organization tasked with monitoring potential threats of AI activities could help defuse AI-associated risks and promote global cooperation in developing and deploying AI technology. The …

On The Existence Of Transversals In Latin Squares Generated From Algebraic Structures, Patrick Eads
On The Existence Of Transversals In Latin Squares Generated From Algebraic Structures, Patrick Eads
Theses
A Latin square in an n x n array of symbols in which each row and each column is a permutation of the n symbols. A selection of n cells from this array that lie on different rows and different columns and contain all n symbols is a transversal of the Latin square. Two longstanding conjectures concern the existence of transversals, Ryser’s conjecture and Brualdi’s conjecture. This thesis examines some of the results that have been achieved in investigating these conjectures, particularly in the cases of Latin squares generated from the Cayley tables of non-associative algebraic structures. A new method …
Method To Determine Refractive Index By Use Of Optical Focal Shift, Michael Burleson
Method To Determine Refractive Index By Use Of Optical Focal Shift, Michael Burleson
Theses
Documentation for optical polymer refractive indices tend to be listed for one wavelength, λd = 587.56 nm, out to only 2 decimal places. Optical glass catalogues generally list index values to 5 decimal places for 10-15 different wavelengths. This thesis describes a new approach to an old method to determine the indices of polymer samples at λHeNe = 632.8 nm (HeNe). It begins by introducing methods for measuring refractive index and their limitations. The property of Snell’s Law is then presented and it is shown how, with specific interferometer equipment, to determine the refractive index of a …
Learning To Calibrate Trust Through Explainability, Amber F. Chesser
Learning To Calibrate Trust Through Explainability, Amber F. Chesser
Theses
Automation has been implemented in a range of machinery. Providing supplementary information about system processes (i.e., explainability) could mitigate over-reliance and enhance operator awareness of potential anomalies. Trust plays a critical role in human- automation collaboration, as over-trust can lead to misuse or over-reliance, while under-trust can result in disuse or the failure to engage automation when it could enhance performance. Dynamic learned trust and situational trust fluctuate during an operator's interaction with a system and can be influenced by the rate of system failures or workload respectively. Design features like explainability can impact perceived usefulness and help users identify …
Assessment Of Atmospheric Correction Algorithms For The Remote Sensing Of Water Quality In Southeastern U.S. Estuaries, Jerome Reimers
Assessment Of Atmospheric Correction Algorithms For The Remote Sensing Of Water Quality In Southeastern U.S. Estuaries, Jerome Reimers
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Water quality is a key indicator in understanding and representing an environment's overall health. Through developments in remote sensing, we can utilize satellite imagery to measure water parameters in each aquatic system. When accurate atmospheric correction is performed, remote sensing can account for atmospheric attenuation and scattering effects to better measure the reflectance and estimate optically active constituents (OAC) present in upper water columns. Atmospheric Correction for OLI lite (ACOLITE) is an atmospheric correction algorithm designed specifically for robust atmospheric correction of water surfaces, in comparison to algorithms designed more for land surfaces such as the European Space Agency’s (ESA) …

The Impact Of Weather Shocks On Employment Outcomes: Evidence From South Africa, Harriet Margaret Brookes Gray, Vis Taraz, Simon Halliday
Environmental Science and Policy: Faculty Publications
Climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, such as drought and heat waves. In this paper, we assess the impact of drought and high temperatures on the employment outcomes of working-age individuals in South Africa between 2008 and 2017. We merge high-resolution weather data with detailed individual-level survey data on labor market outcomes, and estimate causal impacts using a fixed effects framework. We find that increases in the occurrence of drought reduce overall employment. These effects are concentrated in the tertiary sector, amongst informal workers, and in provinces with a higher reliance on tourism. Taken together, our …

Glaciers are important indictors of climate change as changes in glaciers physical features such as their area is in response to measurable evidence of fluctuating climate factors such as temperature, precipitation, and CO2. Although a general retreat of mountain glacier systems has been identified in relation to centennial trends toward warmer temperatures, there is the potential to extract a great deal more information regarding regional variations in climate from the mapping of the time history of the terminus position or surface area of the glaciers. The remote nature of glaciers renders direct measurement impractical on anything other than a local …

Conducting computational stress-strain analysis using finite element methods (FEM) is a common approach when dealing with the complex geometries of atherosclerosis, which is a leading cause of global mortality and complex cardiovascular disease. The considerable expense linked to FEM analysis encourages the substitution of FEM with a considerably faster data-driven machine learning (ML) approach. This study investigated the potential of end-to-end deep learning tools as a more effective substitute for FEM in predicting stress-strain fields within 2D cross sections of arterial walls. We first proposed a U-Net-based fully convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict the von Mises stress and strain …

The system complexity that characterizes current systems warrants an integrated and comprehensive approach to system design and development. This need has brought about a paradigm shift towards Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approaches to system design and a departure from traditional document-centric methods. While MBSE shows great promise, the ambiguities and inconsistencies present in Natural Language (NL) requirements hinder their conversion to models directly. The field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) has demonstrated great potential in facilitating the conversion of NL requirements into a semi-machine-readable format that enables their standardization and use in a model-based environment. A first step towards standardizing …

Within the last century, the global sea level has risen between 16 and 21 cm and will likely accelerate into the future. Projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) show the global mean sea level (GMSL) rise may increase to up to 1 m (1000 mm) by 2100. The primary cause of the sea level rise can be attributed to climate change through the thermal expansion of seawater and the recession of glaciers from melting. Because of the complexity of the climate and environmental systems, it is very difficult to accurately predict the increase in sea level. The …
