Spiritual Well-Being Scale (Swbs): Measuring Spiritual Well-Being In International Contexts, Rodger K. Bufford, Raymond F. Paloutzian

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS) is a 20-item measure of self-perceived spiritual health. Developed in the 1980s, it includes 2 subscales with 10 items each. Responses are made on a 6-point continuum from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree with no neutral point; 9 of the items are negatively worded to minimize response biases. The US samples show good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Content validity was established in construction. Expected correlations with religion and spirituality indices, social and psychological measures, and physical functioning and demonstration of expected group differences support criterion validity. Factor analysis commonly shows 2 factors corresponding to …

Eccentric Pairs: Analytic Gravitational Waves From Binary Black Holes In Elliptic Orbits, Dillon Buskirk, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton Jan 2023

Eccentric Pairs: Analytic Gravitational Waves From Binary Black Holes In Elliptic Orbits, Dillon Buskirk, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton

Physics Faculty Research

Gravitational waves (GW) from eccentric binaries have intricate signals encoding important features about the location, creation and evolution of the sources. Eccentricity shortens the merger time, making the emitted GW statistically predominant in the observed data once detectors will reach the required sensitivity. We present a novel implementation of fully analytical GW templates from eccentric binary black hole (BBH) mergers within the Wolfram Mathematica software. We increase the accuracy by identifying and minimizing the possible source of errors. We start with an overview of the physics involved in eccentric mergers, then assemble the strain for the inspiral by employing up …

Question Format Biases College Students' Metacognitive Judgments For Exam Performance, Michael J. Mcguire Jan 2023

Question Format Biases College Students' Metacognitive Judgments For Exam Performance, Michael J. Mcguire

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

College students in a lower-division psychology course made metacognitive judgments by predicting and postdicting performance for true-false, multiple-choice, and fill-in-the-blank question sets on each of three exams. This study investigated which question format would result in the most accurate metacognitive judgments. Extending Koriat’s (1997) cue-utilization framework to these judgments, each format gave students different cues on which to base judgments. Further, each format has different probabilities of correctly guessing, which can skew accuracy. Students reported the lowest estimates for fill-in-the-blank questions. Accuracy measured using bias scores showed students’ predictions and postdictions were most accurate for multiple-choice items. Accuracy measured using …

Designing And Reflecting On Active Learning And Flipped Classrooms For Renal Physiology, Bernard Thomas Drumm Dr Jan 2023

Designing And Reflecting On Active Learning And Flipped Classrooms For Renal Physiology, Bernard Thomas Drumm Dr

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

In this paper, we outline a case study describing the incorporation of active learning and flipped classroom techniques in a renal physiology module in 1st year medical school. The module was redesigned over a 2-year period within the teaching for understanding (TfU) framework (generative topics, understanding goals, performances of understanding and ongoing assessment) to include more active learning exercises (clicker response systems centered on clinically relevant problem sets and classroom assessment techniques – CATs), which culminated in flipping the classroom entirely during the 2nd year. The goal, was to evaluate student perceptions of the flipped classroom model and to reflect …

Tilting It Forward: The Transparency Model Of Assessment As A Scaffold For Secondary Teacher Education, Nancy L. Remler Jan 2023

Tilting It Forward: The Transparency Model Of Assessment As A Scaffold For Secondary Teacher Education, Nancy L. Remler

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Even though K-12 educators must assess student learning and adjust instruction based on learning data, many teachers lack confidence in their ability to assess. Because low confidence levels may be due to inadequate teacher preparation, this study invokes the pivotal SoTL project, Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT), as it examines TILT’s impact on twelve undergraduate ELA teacher candidates (TCs). The hypothesis was that TILT would not only enhance undergraduate TCs’ learning outcomes in an ELA methods course, but also scaffold their early development of assessment literacy. Findings support the hypothesis but indicate that TCs would benefit from additional instruction …

Safely Correct Hyponatremia With Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy: A Flexible, All-Purpose Method Based On The Mixing Paradigm, Sheldon Chen, Jerry Yee, Robert Chiaramonte Jan 2023

Safely Correct Hyponatremia With Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy: A Flexible, All-Purpose Method Based On The Mixing Paradigm, Sheldon Chen, Jerry Yee, Robert Chiaramonte

Nephrology Articles

Treating chronic hyponatremia by continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is challenging because the gradient between a replacement fluid's [sodium] and a patient's serum sodium can be steep, risking too rapid of a correction rate with possible consequences. Besides CRRT, other gains and losses of sodium- and potassium-containing solutions, like intravenous fluid and urine output, affect the correction of serum sodium over time, known as osmotherapy. The way these fluids interact and contribute to the sodium/potassium/water balance can be parsed as a mixing problem. As Na/K/H(2) O are added, mixed in the body, and drained via CRRT, the net balance of …

Covid-19 Crowd Detection, Mustafa Ibrahim, Aly M. Zeineldin, Yameen Khan, Ayman Elmesalami, Soad Ibrahim

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

Object detection was introduced by researchers for face detection. Researchers explain how the detected face is divided into minor frames to be recognized by the algorithm. Due to COVID-19 and government regulations, many people face problems going to shopping centers and shop safely. It has been very hard for both the government and the people to manage social distancing. In our study, we developed a system using Raspberry Pi-4 that will detect the distance between people along with counting the number of distance and mask violations. An error message will appear on the screen in red, showing the total number …

Assessing Univariate And Multivariate Normality In Pls-Sem, Kathy Qing Ma, Weiyong Zhang

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) has gained popularity among researchers in part due to its relaxed requirement for multivariate normality. One important step in performing structural equation modeling (SEM) is to test the normality assumption. In this paper, we illustrate how to assess univariate and multivariate normality in PLS-SEM using WarpPLS.

The Reversible Low-Temperature Instability Of Human Dj-1 Oxidative States, Tessa Andrews, Javier Seravallic, Robert Powers Jan 2023

The Reversible Low-Temperature Instability Of Human Dj-1 Oxidative States, Tessa Andrews, Javier Seravallic, Robert Powers

Robert Powers Publications

DJ-1 is a homodimeric protein that is centrally involved in various human diseases including Parkinson disease (PD). DJ-1 protects against oxidative damage and mitochondrial dysfunction through a homeostatic control of reactive oxygen species (ROS). DJ-1 pathology results from a loss of function, where ROS readily oxidizes a highly conserved and functionally essential cysteine (C106). The over-oxidation of DJ-1 C106 leads to a dynamically destabilized and biologically inactivated protein. An analysis of the structural stability of DJ-1 as a function of oxidative state and temperature may provide further insights into the role the protein plays in PD progression. NMR spectroscopy, circular …

Bioorthogonal Tethering Of Drug Fragments To Engineered G Protein-Coupled Receptors, Jordan M. Mattheisen Jan 2023

Bioorthogonal Tethering Of Drug Fragments To Engineered G Protein-Coupled Receptors, Jordan M. Mattheisen

Student Theses and Dissertations

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) modulate diverse cellular signaling pathways and are important drug targets. Despite the availability of high-resolution structures for nearly 100 discrete GPCRs in complex with various ligands, discovering allosteric drugs that can modulate receptor signaling remains challenging. In principle, allosteric ligands have certain advantages because they bind to pockets on the receptor that do not directly impact the orthosteric site for agonist ligands, but still tune downstream signaling pathways. But identifying and validating allosteric ligands remains difficult partly due to the dynamic nature of GPCRs in native membranes. Of the more than 3700 distinct FDA-approved drugs, there …

New Insights Into The Roles Of Fan1 Nuclease In Genome Maintenance And Disease, Christian S. Saffran Jan 2023

New Insights Into The Roles Of Fan1 Nuclease In Genome Maintenance And Disease, Christian S. Saffran

Student Theses and Dissertations

Exogenous and endogenous insults to genomic integrity are an existential threat to every species, and therefore robust DNA damage repair mechanisms have evolved to protect against genotoxic threats. FANCD2 and FANCI associated nuclease 1 (FAN1) has roles in protection against two major threats to genomic stability: DNA interstrand crosslinks (ICLs), and the expansion of trinucleotide repeats. ICLs are highly deleterious lesions that disrupt replication, are destructive to dividing cells, and are extremely toxic to the hematopoietic system. The replication-dependent Fanconi anemia (FA) pathway defends against ICL toxicity in rapidly dividing cells. However, while it is critical for protecting the bone …

The Inequalities On Dual Numbers And Their Topological Structures, Buşra Aktaş, Olgun Durmaz, Hali̇t Gündoğan Jan 2023

The Inequalities On Dual Numbers And Their Topological Structures, Buşra Aktaş, Olgun Durmaz, Hali̇t Gündoğan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Inequalities are frequently used in various fields of mathematics to prove theorems. The existence of inequalities contributes significantly to the foundations of such branches. In this paper, we study the properties of order relations in the system of dual numbers, which is inspired by order relations defined on real numbers. Besides, some special inequalities that are used in various fields of mathematics, such as Cauchy-Schwarz, Minkowski, and Chebyshev are studied in this framework. An example is also provided to validate our research findings.

Metallic-Like Structures And Metallic-Like Maps, Adelina Manea Jan 2023

Metallic-Like Structures And Metallic-Like Maps, Adelina Manea

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The metallic-like $(a,b)$-manifold is a manifold endowed with a polynomial structure of second degree which unifies the almost product, complex structures and includes metallic structures. We introduce the metallic-like maps between metallic-like $(a,b)$-manifolds and we give a criterion for the nonconstancy of these maps. We prove that an almost contact structure on a Riemannian manifold induces a metallic-like $(a,b)$-structure and we give an example of a nonconstant metallic-like endomorphism of a particular almost contact manifold.

Application Of The Fine Sediment Biotic Index To Three Drain Tiled And Ditched Agricultural Systems In Southern Minnesota, Bailey Sanders Jan 2023

Application Of The Fine Sediment Biotic Index To Three Drain Tiled And Ditched Agricultural Systems In Southern Minnesota, Bailey Sanders

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Artificial drainage is a common agricultural management technique in the United States used to remove excess water from poorly drained soils. Approximately 22.48 million hectares of crop land are drain-tiled in the United States, providing long-term economic benefits to farmers. However, artificial drainage increases sediment transport in agricultural watersheds, which can degrade aquatic systems, destroy habitats, and limit biological diversity. Biotic indices based on benthic macroinvertebrates are commonly used to assess surface water quality, but recent studies show potential in developing sediment biotic indices using benthic macroinvertebrates to estimate fine sediment in streams. The objective of this study was to …

Detecting Overlapping Gene Regions Using The U-Net Attention Mechanism, Samuel Lemma Jan 2023

Detecting Overlapping Gene Regions Using The U-Net Attention Mechanism, Samuel Lemma

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The current issue of locating, diagnosing, and treating cancer and other diseases linked to specific target genes necessitates the creation of a reliable system for precisely identifying target genes that are initially extracted from a human chromosome. Current methodologies often suffer from overlapping gene regions in the target gene that occurs during the analysis process, which can have a substantial impact on the accuracy of the results. Our recommended approach, which was the appropriate model to apply for this particular problem, is set to enhance the analytical process by utilizing neural networks' U-Net with an attention mechanism. We were able …

Open Access At A Crossroads: Library Publishing And Bibliodiversity, Lai Ma, Jane Buggle, Marie O'Neill Jan 2023

Open Access At A Crossroads: Library Publishing And Bibliodiversity, Lai Ma, Jane Buggle, Marie O'Neill

Faculty Research

The open access movement has gained momentum since the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) first launched twenty years ago. Notably, there has been a drastic increase in the number of open access articles. Concerns have been raised about equality and diversity issues, however, for researchers without an affiliation (e.g. independent, unemployed and retired researchers) and researchers on the ‘scientific periphery’ who are excluded from the gold open access model. This article argues that the gold open access model is destructive to the knowledge production ecosystem by addressing the importance of bibliodiversity and the ways in which library publishing can contribute …

Investigation Of A Recent Landslide In Fort Smith, Arkansas, D. Mayo, M.J. Thomas, A. Burns, J. Pruitt, P. Karr

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A morphologically youthful slope failure, herein referred to as the Landfill Landslide, was identified in a remote section of the City of Fort Smith Landfill, and permission was obtained to investigate. The slide on a deforested, NW-facing 27% slope beneath a linear head scarp about 200 meters long. One end of the head scarp curves abruptly downhill and transforms into a distinct lateral scarp greater than 100 meters long. The surface of the slide is about 24,000 m2 (6 acres) in area and is easily distinguished from adjacent intact slopes by its hummocky morphology and transverse ridges and valleys. The …
