Nilary Group Rings And Algebras, Omar Al-Mallah, Gary Birkenmeier, Hafedh Alnogashi Jan 2023

Nilary Group Rings And Algebras, Omar Al-Mallah, Gary Birkenmeier, Hafedh Alnogashi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A ring $A$ is (principally) nilary, denoted (pr-)nilary, if whenever $XY=0,$ then there exists a positive integer $n$ such that either $X^n=0$ or $Y^n=0$ for all (principal) ideals $X$, $Y$ of $A$. We determine necessary and/or sufficient conditions for the group ring $A[G]$ to be (principally) nilary in terms of conditions on the ring $A$ or the group $G$. For example, we show that: (1) If $A[G]$ is (pr-)nilary, then $A$ is (pr-)nilary and either $G$ is prime or the order of each finite nontrivial normal subgroup of $G$ is nilpotent in $A$. (2) Assume that $G$ is finite. Then …

Friend Or Foe? The Role Of Transforming Growth Factor-Β (Tgfβ) Signaling In Calcineurin Inhibitor-Induced Renal Damage, Adaku Uwe Jan 2023

Friend Or Foe? The Role Of Transforming Growth Factor-Β (Tgfβ) Signaling In Calcineurin Inhibitor-Induced Renal Damage, Adaku Uwe

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

With its incorporation into clinical practice in the early 1980s, the class of pharmacological agents known as calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) quickly became the cornerstone of immunosuppressive therapy post-organ transplantation. However, its use is limited by irreversible kidney damage in the form of renal fibrosis. The molecular mechanism by which CNIs induce renal fibrosis remains to be better understood, and to date, there are no specific therapeutic strategies to mitigate this damage. This dilemma presents a critical need to explain mechanisms by which CNIs cause renal damage. Kidneys of patients on chronic CNI therapy show increased expression of the proinflammatory cytokine …

Constructing Written Scientific Explanations: A Conceptual Analysis Supporting Diverse And Exceptional Middle- And High-School Students In Developing Science Disciplinary Literacy, Brooke Moore, Jessica Wright

Advanced Education Programs Faculty Publications

Constructing a written scientific explanation is a science practice that is fundamental in supporting students developing understanding of the natural world in which we live. Engaging in the practice of constructing valid scientific explanations supports students in developing science disciplinary literacy. Yet, writing a scientific explanation can be challenging for diverse and exceptional learners because it requires coordinating multiple, complex skills. This conceptual analysis explores the purpose of constructing written scientific explanations by focusing on the constituent elements and structures of a constructed scientific explanation. These findings are then integrated into a framework to assist Individual Education Program (IEP) teams …

Analysis Of Ab Initio Protein Structure Prediction Methods, Maytha Alshammari, Jing He Jan 2023

Analysis Of Ab Initio Protein Structure Prediction Methods, Maytha Alshammari, Jing He

College of Sciences Posters

Protein structure prediction produces atomic models of three-dimensional structure of a protein from its amino acid sequence. Understanding the function mechanism of proteins requires knowledge of three-dimensional structures. When developing new enzymes and drugs, it's essential to understand the structure of the target protein. In this study, we analyze models predicted using two ab initio protein structure prediction methods, trRosetta and Quark. A set of thirty protein chains was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the methods. The thirty chains were collected from Protein Data Bank (June – November, 2020). The length and the relative position of the predicted secondary …

A Bootstrap Test For Informative Intra-Cluster Group Sizes In Clustered Data, Hasika K. Wickrama Senevirathne, Sandipan Dutta Jan 2023

A Bootstrap Test For Informative Intra-Cluster Group Sizes In Clustered Data, Hasika K. Wickrama Senevirathne, Sandipan Dutta

College of Sciences Posters

Clustered data are frequently observed in various domains of scientific and social studies. In a typical clustered data, units within a cluster are correlated while units between different clusters are independent. An example of such clustered data can be found in dental studies where individuals are treated as clusters and the teeth in an individual are the units within a cluster. While analyzing such clustered data, it has been observed that the number of units present in a cluster can be informative in terms of being associated with the outcome from that cluster. Specifically, when the aim is to compare …

Hydrodynamics And Sediment Transport In The Tidally Influenced James River, Ollie Gilchrest, Rip Hale Jan 2023

Hydrodynamics And Sediment Transport In The Tidally Influenced James River, Ollie Gilchrest, Rip Hale

The Graduate School Posters

The tidally influenced James River is an important economic, ecologic, and cultural resource for VA residents. Tidal rivers have been historically understudied, however they are critical transition zones, the dynamics of which have implications for freshwater supply and sediment trapping. Globally, estimates suggest that >30% of fluvial sediment is trapped in the tidal zone, the location and dynamics of which are actively changing due to sea level rise and saltwater encroachment. In addition, analysis of historical water levels on the James River has shown a decrease in the tidal range since 1940. The present study combines >1-year’s worth of hydrographic …

Organic Matter Content And Grain Size Analysis In Seagrass Sediments, Adriana Amrhein, Rip Hale Jan 2023

Organic Matter Content And Grain Size Analysis In Seagrass Sediments, Adriana Amrhein, Rip Hale

College of Sciences Posters

Anthropogenic stresses including increased water temperatures, decreased water quality, sea level rise, ocean acidification and sediment biogeochemical processes have caused a significant loss in seagrass meadow acreage. Seagrass meadows provide coastal protection from storms and recently have been emphasized for their importance in sequestering and storing “Blue Carbon” from the atmosphere and ocean. Seagrass meadows can trap this blue carbon in their sediment as organic carbon, and it can be stored for hundreds to thousands of years. Restoration efforts of seagrass meadows in the Virginia coast started in the 1990s and effects of increasing seagrass density can be observed in …

College of Sciences Posters

Dust deposition is a major source of bioactive trace elements to the surface ocean, yet this flux remains difficult to constrain. Previously, time-averaged dust flux has been estimated using surface ocean dissolved aluminum (DAl) concentrations, assumed values for aerosol aluminum solubility (%AlS), and the residence time of DAl in the surface mixed layer (SML). We apply this method to estimate dust deposition in the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) region using water-column DAl data from cruises in 2019, which is compared with direct flux estimates from contemporaneous measurements of aluminum in aerosols and rain collected on Bermuda. Seasonal …

On The Cohomology Of Solvable Leibniz Algebras, Jorg Feldvoss, Friedrich Wagemann Jan 2023

On The Cohomology Of Solvable Leibniz Algebras, Jorg Feldvoss, Friedrich Wagemann

University Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper is a sequel to J. Feldvoss and F. Wagemann: On Leibniz cohomology, (2021), where we mainly consider semisimple Leibniz algebras. It turns out that the analogue of the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence for Leibniz cohomology cannot be applied to many ideals, and therefore this spectral sequence seems not to be applicable for computing the cohomology of non-semi-simple Leibniz algebras. The main idea of the present paper is to use similar tools as developed by Farnsteiner for Hochschild cohomology (see R. Farnsteiner: On the cohomology of associative algebras and Lie algebras (1987) and R. Farnsteiner: On the vanishing of homology …

Hmm, You Seem Confused! Tracking Interlocutor Confusion For Situated Task-Oriented Hri, Na Li, Robert J. Ross

Articles

Our research seeks to develop a long-lasting and high-quality en- gagement between the user and the social robot, which in turn requires a more sophisticated alignment of the user and the system than is currently commonly available. Close monitoring of inter- locutors’ states, and we argue their confusion state in particular, and adjusting dialogue policies based on this state of confusion is needed for successful joint activity. In this paper, we present an ini- tial study of a human-robot conversation scenarios using a Pepper robot to investigate the confusion states of users. A Wizard-of-Oz (WoZ) HRI experiment is illustrated in …

Approximate Equilibria For A T Cell And Treg Model, Bruno M. P. M. Oliveira, Isabel P. Figueiredo, Nigel J. Burroughs, Alberto A. Pinto Jan 2023

Approximate Equilibria For A T Cell And Treg Model, Bruno M. P. M. Oliveira, Isabel P. Figueiredo, Nigel J. Burroughs, Alberto A. Pinto

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We analyse a model of immune response by T cells (CD4), where regulatory T cells (Tregs) act by inhibiting IL-2 secretion. We introduced an asymmetry reflecting that the difference between the growth and death rates can be higher for the active T cells and the active Tregs than for the inactive T cells and inactive Tregs. This asymmetry mimics the presence of memory T cells. In this paper we start by analysing the model in the absence of Tregs. We obtain an explicit formula that gives approximately the antigenic stimulation of T cells from the concentration of Tregs. Afterwards, we …

Chaotic Behaviour Of The Solutions Of The Moore-Gibson- Thompson Equation, J. Alberto Conejero, Carlos Lizama, Francisco Rodenas Jan 2023

Chaotic Behaviour Of The Solutions Of The Moore-Gibson- Thompson Equation, J. Alberto Conejero, Carlos Lizama, Francisco Rodenas

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We study a third-order partial differential equation in the form t uttt +autt −c2uxx −buxxt = 0, (1) that corresponds to the one-dimensional version of the Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation arising in high-intensity ultrasound and linear vibrations of elastic structures. In contrast with the current literature on the subject, we show that when the critical parameter g := a − t c2 b is negative, the equation (1) admits an uniformly continuous, chaotic and topologically mixing semigroup on Banach spaces of Herzog’s type.

Similarity Of General Population Matrices And Pseudo-Leslie Matrices, Jo?O F. Alves, Henrique M. Oliveira Jan 2023

Similarity Of General Population Matrices And Pseudo-Leslie Matrices, Jo?O F. Alves, Henrique M. Oliveira

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

A similarity transformation is obtained between general population matrices models of the Usher or Lefkovitch types and a simpler model, the pseudo-Leslie model. The pseudo Leslie model is a matrix that can be decomposed in a row matrix, which is not necessarily non-negative and a subdiagonal positive matrix. This technique has computational advantages, since the solutions of the iterative problem using Leslie matrices are readily obtained . In the case of two age structured population models, one Lefkovitch and another Leslie, the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropies are different, despite the same growth ratio of both models. We prove that Markov matrices associated …

Structure Of The Global Attractor For Weak Solutions Of A Reaction-Diffusion Equation, Oleksiy V. Kapustyan, Pavlo O. Kasyanov, José Valero Jan 2023

Structure Of The Global Attractor For Weak Solutions Of A Reaction-Diffusion Equation, Oleksiy V. Kapustyan, Pavlo O. Kasyanov, José Valero

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper we study the structure of the global attractor for a multivalued semiflow generated by weak solutions of a reaction-diffusion equation in which uniqueness of the Cauchy problem is not guaranteed, improving the results of a previous paper. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that the global attractor can be characterized using either the unstable manifold of the set of stationary points or the stable one but considering in this last case only solutions in the set of bounded complete trajectories.

Predicting Synchronization Of Three Mutually Inhibiting Groups Of Oscillators With Strong Resetting, José M. Amig?, Thiago S. Mosqueiro, Ram?N Huerta Jan 2023

Predicting Synchronization Of Three Mutually Inhibiting Groups Of Oscillators With Strong Resetting, José M. Amig?, Thiago S. Mosqueiro, Ram?N Huerta

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Neural populations encode sensory information, memory and motor patterns through electro-chemical firings, which propagate throughout the nervous system via synapses, a structure that couples neurons together. A powerful tool to investigate synchronization issues in such systems are the Phase Resetting curves. However these are best suited for brief and small perturbations. Motivated by the observation of strong inhibition in some neural circuits, we investigate a resetting model with similar features to a known neural population called striatum, in which three groups of neurons inhibit themselves. The model is intrinsically based on Kuramoto oscillators, and is analytically treatable. We derive a …

In memory of our beloved Professor Jos´e Rodrigues Santos de Sousa Ramos (1948-2007), who Jo?ao Cabral, one of the authors of this paper, had the honour of being his student between 2000 and 2006, we wrote this paper following the research by experimentation, using the new technologies to capture a new insight about a problem, as him so much love to do it. His passion was to create new relations between different fields of mathematics. He was a builder of bridges of knowledge, encouraging the birth of new ways to understand this science. One of the areas that Sousa Ramos …

Effects Of Additive And Multiplicative Noise On The Dynamics Of A Parabolic Equation, Tom?S Caraballo, Renato Colucci Jan 2023

Effects Of Additive And Multiplicative Noise On The Dynamics Of A Parabolic Equation, Tom?S Caraballo, Renato Colucci

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We consider the effects of additive and multiplicative noise on the asymptotic behavior of a fourth order parabolic equation arising in the study of phase transitions. On account that the deterministic model presents three different time scales, in this paper we have established some conditions under which the third time scale, which encounter finite dimensional behavior of the system, is preserved under both additive and multiplicative linear noise. In particular we have proved the existence of a random attractor in both cases, and observed that the order of magnitude of the third time scale is also preserved.
