Specifically, we find that two themes emerge from this corpus as key next questions to answer to move the field forward. How do microbial processes scale up in space and …

Explanatory Ultimacy, Epistemic Access, And Evil: A Community Theodicy, Jonathan Michael Huls Jan 2023

Explanatory Ultimacy, Epistemic Access, And Evil: A Community Theodicy, Jonathan Michael Huls

Masters Theses

This is a work about meaning and value. How do human persons find meaning? Why do human persons have value—or do we? A stubborn problem of meaning is evidenced by the perennially treated theistic problem of evil. How is an all-powerful, all-knowing, and morally perfect God compatible with a world filled with violence and hate? If God is powerfully perfect, why is His world not perfect too? This project endeavors to notice that an answer to this problem depends on properly grounding human access to meaning—especially the meaning of the words God, and evil. It is argued herein that there …

Invariant-Set Design Of Robust Switched Trackers For Bidirectional Power Converters In Hybrid Microgrids, Ehab Bayoumi Jan 2023

Invariant-Set Design Of Robust Switched Trackers For Bidirectional Power Converters In Hybrid Microgrids, Ehab Bayoumi

Mechanical Engineering

The small-signal stability of a hybrid (DC/AC) microgrid is highly affected by the direction and amount of power flow through the interlinking converter (IC). This article proposes an invariant-set design of nondroop tracker (to follow the desired time-varying reference) for controlling the power flow in hybrid microgrids in both inversion and rectification modes. The proposed tracker provides fast response, zero steady state error, and robustness against system uncertainty. Since the invariant-set is difficult to calculate, it is approximated using a bounding ellipsoid (being a linear function, and the problem reduces to convex optimization, easy to solve). A novel linear matrix …

Closed-Loop Modeling Of Central And Intrinsic Cardiac Nervous System Circuits Underlying Cardiovascular Control, Michelle M. Gee, Abraham M. Lenhoff, James S. Schwaber, Babatunde A. Ogunnaike, Rajanikanth Vadigepalli Jan 2023

Closed-Loop Modeling Of Central And Intrinsic Cardiac Nervous System Circuits Underlying Cardiovascular Control, Michelle M. Gee, Abraham M. Lenhoff, James S. Schwaber, Babatunde A. Ogunnaike, Rajanikanth Vadigepalli

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

The baroreflex is a multi-input, multi-output physiological control system that regulates blood pressure by modulating nerve activity between the brainstem and the heart. Existing computational models of the baroreflex do not explicitly incorporate the intrinsic cardiac nervous system (ICN), which mediates central control of heart function. We developed a computational model of closed-loop cardiovascular control by integrating a network representation of the ICN within central control reflex circuits. We examined central and local contributions to the control of heart rate, ventricular functions, and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). Our simulations match the experimentally observed relationship between RSA and lung tidal volume. …

A Forestry Trade Data Discrepancy Analysis, Morgan Alyce Daigle Jan 2023

A Forestry Trade Data Discrepancy Analysis, Morgan Alyce Daigle

LSU Master's Theses

Trade data across multiple databases experience unavailability across some countries/forestry products, inconsistency, and unreliability; and these qualities manifest as discrepancies in the data. Literature provides evidence of discrepancies and inconsistencies within international trade statistics, including documented cases in which they are present within agriculture sector trade.

While researchers have worked to pinpoint factors to explain discrepancies, studies on the forestry trade databases are not as prevalent. Therefore, more research needs to be conducted to identify discrepancies within forest sector products trade data to understand the nature of discrepancies found between different bilateral trading partners.

The goal of this thesis is …

We conducted a field study using multiple wearable devices on 231 federal office workers to assess the impact of the indoor environment on individual wellbeing. Past research has established that the workplace environment is closely tied to an individual's wellbeing. Since sound is the most-reported environmental factor causing stress and discomfort, we focus on quantifying its association with physiological wellbeing. Physiological wellbeing is represented as a latent variable in an empirical Bayes model with heart rate variability measures-SDNN and normalized-HF as the observed outcomes and with exogenous factors including sound level as inputs. We find that an individual's physiological wellbeing …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of African American female past students, regarding unvoiced barriers, at Seven Hills Technical College. The theory guiding this study was Tinto’s theory on student integration. Tinto believed that a student’s academic and social interactions are indicators of whether a student will be successful. The interpretive framework utilized in this study was critical race theory. The central research question guiding this study was: What are the lived experiences of African American female past students who did not persist to graduation from a predominantly White technical college? The …

Insight From Biology Program Learning Outcomes: Implications For Teaching, Learning, And Assessment, Noelle Clark, Jeremy L. Hsu

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Learning goals and objectives are a key part of instruction, informing curricular design, assessment, and learning. These goals and objectives are also applied at the programmatic level, with program learning outcomes (PLOs) providing insight into the skills that undergraduate biology programs intend for their students to master. PLOs are mandated by all major higher education accreditation agencies and play integral roles in programmatic assessment. Despite their importance, however, there have not been any prior attempts to characterize PLOs across undergraduate biology programs in the United States. Our study reveals that many programs may not be using PLOs to communicate learning …

Second Age, Middle Age, Norbert Schürer Jan 2023

Second Age, Middle Age, Norbert Schürer

Journal of Tolkien Research

The recent releases of the volume The Fall of Númenor and the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power raise the question: What is the significance of the Second Age of Tolkien’s legendarium? This article suggests that Tolkien conceived of the Second Age as parallel to the Middle Ages in our world, which were the focus of his academic career in his studies of Old and Middle English language and literature. As various frameworks and overviews for the legendarium demonstrate, Tolkien thought of the Second Age, like the Middle Ages, as uniquely looking backwards and forwards …

A Predictive Model For Diabetes Mellitus Using Machine Learning Techniques (A Study In Nigeria), Abraham Eseoghene Evwiekpaefe, Nafisat Abdulkadir Jan 2023

A Predictive Model For Diabetes Mellitus Using Machine Learning Techniques (A Study In Nigeria), Abraham Eseoghene Evwiekpaefe, Nafisat Abdulkadir

The African Journal of Information Systems

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder that occurs when the blood sugar level in the body is considered to be high, thereby resulting in inadequate insulin in the body leading to a myriad complications. The World Health Organization in 2021 indicated that in 2019, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths. Though some research has been carried out in the area of DM prediction in high-income countries, not much has been done in middle/low-income countries like Nigeria, using factors that are peculiar to their environment. This paper, therefore, aims to develop a machine learning model that predicts …

Digital Twin Of Atmospheric Environment: Sensory Data Fusion For High-Resolution Pm2.5 Estimation And Action Policies Recommendation, Kudaibergen Abutalip, Anas Al-Lahham, Abdulmotaleb Elsaddik

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

Particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) is one of the main pollutants that has considerable detrimental effects on human health. Estimating its concentration levels with ground monitors is inefficient for several reasons. In this study, we build a digital twin (DT) of an atmospheric environment by fusing remote sensing and observational data. Integral part of DT pipeline is a presence of feedback that can influence future input data. Estimated values of PM2.5 obtained from an ensemble of Random Forest and Gradient Boosting are used to provide recommendations for decreasing the agglomeration levels. A simple optimization problem is formulated for …

Structural Variants Identified Using Non-Mendelian Inheritance Patterns Advance The Mechanistic Understanding Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, David Kainer, Alan R. Templeton, Erica T. Prates, Daniel Jacboson, Euan R.O. Allan, Sharlee Climer, Michael R. Garvin

Computer Science Faculty Works

The heritability of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), based on 680,000 families and five countries, is estimated to be nearly 80%, yet heritability reported from SNP-based studies are consistently lower, and few significant loci have been identified with genome-wide association studies. This gap in genomic information may reside in rare variants, interaction among variants (epistasis), or cryptic structural variation (SV) and may provide mechanisms that underlie ASD. Here we use a method to identify potential SVs based on non-Mendelian inheritance patterns in pedigrees using parent-child genotypes from ASD families and demonstrate that they are enriched in ASD-risk genes. Most are in …

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-fight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) is one the most powerful analytical platforms for chemical investigations of complex biological samples. It produces large datasets that are rich in information, but highly complex, and its consistency may be affected by random systemic fluctuations and/ or changes in the experimental parameters. This study details the optimization of a data processing strategy that compensates for severe 2D pattern misalignments and detector response fluctuations for saliva samples analyzed across 2 years. The strategy was trained on two batches: one with samples from healthy subjects who had undergone dietary intervention with high/low-Maillard …

The deep ocean comprises complex ecosystems made up of numerous community and habitat types that provide multiple services that benefit humans. As the industrialization of the deep sea proceeds, a standardized and robust set of methods and metrics need to be developed to monitor the baseline conditions and any anthropogenic and climate change-related impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem function, and ecosystem services. Here, we review what we have learned from studies involving offshore-energy industries, including state-of-the-art technologies and strategies for obtaining reliable metrics of deep-sea biodiversity and ecosystem function. An approach that includes the detection and monitoring of ecosystem services, with …

Community Detection Via Persistent Homology Surfaces, Abigail Jenkins Jan 2023

Community Detection Via Persistent Homology Surfaces, Abigail Jenkins

Theses and Dissertations

Network science continues to be an area of growing interest. In this thesis we introduce new methods of analyzing the structure of networks through the use of persistent homology. We propose the notion of a network's persistent surface, which allows us to visualize a vertex's relation to the whole network from a purely homological point of view. We further introduce a method of persistent surface community detection that finds vertices that play the same structural role in the network. We describe how these concepts provide the basis for an equivalence class among the vertices of a network, and provide many …

Equilibrium State Of An Electron-Positron Pair, Polievkt Perov Jan 2023

Equilibrium State Of An Electron-Positron Pair, Polievkt Perov

College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works

It is shown that a stable electron-positron pair can exist and be in equilibrium, without recombining. The unlike charges in the electron-positron pair are held apart from each other near the equilibrium position where the attractive Coulomb’s force between unlike charges and the repelling force between the spin magnetic moments balance out each other. An electron-positron pair can be considered as an oscillator consisting of two masses on a spring. The calculations of the equilibrium distance and the effective “spring constant” of an electron-positron pair are presented. We suggest that free space might be a network of interacting electrons and …

Finding Forensic Evidence In The Operating System's Graphical User Interface, Edward X. Wilson Mr. Jan 2023

Finding Forensic Evidence In The Operating System's Graphical User Interface, Edward X. Wilson Mr.

LSU Master's Theses

A branch of cyber security known as memory forensics focuses on extracting meaningful evidence from system memory. This analysis is often referred to as volatile memory analysis, and is generally performed on memory captures acquired from target systems. Inside of a memory capture is the complete state of a system under investigation, including the contents of currently running as well as previously executed applications. Analysis of this data can reveal a significant amount of activity that occurred on a system since the last reboot. For this research, the Windows operating system is targeted. In particular, the graphical user interface component …

Recent amendments to design ground snow load requirements in ASCE 7-22 have reduced the size of case study regions by 91% from what they were in ASCE 7-16, primarily in western states. This reduction is made possible through the development of highly accurate regional generalized additive regression models (RGAMs), stitched together with a novel smoothing scheme implemented in the R software package remap, to produce the continental- scale maps of reliability-targeted design ground snow loads available in ASCE 7-22. This approach allows for better characterizations of the changing relationship between temperature, elevation, and ground snow loads across the Conterminous United …
