Climate change is resulting in global changes to sea level and wave climates, which in many locations significantly increasethe probability of erosion, floodingand damage to coastal infrastructure and ecosystems. Therefore, there isa pressing societal need to be able to forecast themorphological evolution of our coastlines over a broad range of timescales, spanningdays-to-decades, facilitating more focussed, appropriate, and cost-effective management interventions and data informed planning to support thedevelopment of coastal environments. A wide range of modelling approaches have been used with varying degrees of success to assess both the detailed morphological evolution and/or simplified indicators of coastal erosion/accretion.This paper presents an overview of these …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The infectious nature of the COVID-19 virus demands rapid detection to quarantine the infected to isolate the spread or provide the necessary treatment if required. Analysis of COVID-19-infected chest Computed Tomography Scans (CT scans) have been shown to be successful in detecting the disease, making them essential in radiology assessment and screening of infected patients. Single-model Deep CNN models have been used to extract complex information pertaining to the CT scan images, allowing for in-depth analysis and thereby aiding in the diagnosis of the infection by automatically classifying the chest CT scan images as infected or non-infected. The feature maps …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Orange peel oil (OPO) is one of the most common flavorings used in the food industry, but it is volatile under environmental conditions (the presence of light, oxygen, humidity, and high temperatures). Encapsulation by biopolymer nanocomposites is a suitable and novel strategy to improve the bioavailability and stability of OPO and its controlled release. In this study, we investigated the release profile of OPO from freeze-dried optimized nanocomposite powders as a function of pH (3, 7, 11) and temperature (30, 60, and 90 °C), and within a simulated salivary system. Finally, its release kinetics modelling was performed using experimental models. …

Site Selection Of Combined Offshore Wind And Wave Energy Farms: A Systematic Review, Shabnam Hosseinzadeh, Amir Etemad-Shahidi, Rodney A. Stewart

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Growing energy demand worldwide and onshore limitations have increased interest in offshore renewable energy exploitation. A combination of offshore renewable energy resources such as wind and wave energy can produce stable power output at a lower cost compared to a single energy source. Consequently, identifying the best locations for constructing combined offshore renewable energy farms is crucial. This paper investigates the technical, economic, social, and environmental aspects of Combined Offshore Wind and Wave Energy Farm (COWWEF) site selection. Past literature was evaluated using a systematic review method to synthesize, criticize, and categorize study regions, dataset characteristics, constraints, evaluation criteria, and …

Extreme Differentiation Along Multiple Liquid Lines Of Descent In Strongly Peralkaline Magma Series At Pantelleria (Italy), John C. White, Ray Macdonald, Bogusław Bagiński, Katarzyna M. Liszewska Feb 2023

Extreme Differentiation Along Multiple Liquid Lines Of Descent In Strongly Peralkaline Magma Series At Pantelleria (Italy), John C. White, Ray Macdonald, Bogusław Bagiński, Katarzyna M. Liszewska

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The liquid line of descent from trachyte to pantellerite is controlled primarily by fractional crystallization of alkali feldspar, with whole rock compositions following a fractionation path along the ‘thermal valley’ in the peralkaline haplogranite system Qz-Ab-Or-Ac-Ns and terminating at a minimum on the feldspar-quartz cotectic. Although whole-rock compositions for different pantelleritic suites follow nearly identical paths in a Qz-Ab-Or projection that terminate near the experimental minimum (Qz40.5Or34.5Ab25 at 100 MPa, projected from Ac-Ns), matrix glass from samples with near-minimum compositions record extreme differentiation and form a ‘cotectic delta’ beyond the terminus of the ‘thermal valley’. Although each glass trend shows …

Mobile platforms are not rising to their potential as ubiquitous computers, in large part because of the constraints we impose on their apps in the name of security. Mobile operating systems have long struggled with the challenge of isolating untrusted apps. In pursuit of a secure runtime environment, Android and iOS isolate apps inside a gulag of platform-imposed programming languages and runtime libraries, leaving few design decisions to the application developers. These thick layers of custom software eschew app portability and maintainability, as development teams must continually tweak their apps to support modifications to the OS's runtime libraries. Nonstandard and …

A Heuristic Approach To The Consecutive Ones Submatrix Problem, Rewayda Abo-Alsabeh, Hajem Ati Daham, Abdellah Salhi

Baghdad Science Journal

Given a matrix, the Consecutive Ones Submatrix (C1S) problem which aims to find the permutation of columns that maximizes the number of columns having together only one block of consecutive ones in each row is considered here. A heuristic approach will be suggested to solve the problem. Also, the Consecutive Blocks Minimization (CBM) problem which is related to the consecutive ones submatrix will be considered. The new procedure is proposed to improve the column insertion approach. Then real world and random matrices from the set covering problem will be evaluated and computational results will be highlighted.

Cryptocurrencies And Climate Change: A Net-Zero Paradox, Jason Maclean Feb 2023

Cryptocurrencies And Climate Change: A Net-Zero Paradox, Jason Maclean

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

Cryptocurrencies pose a number of complex law and policy problems, the most pressing of which are the industry’s climate and environmental impacts. This article examines the climate and environmental impacts of crypto-assets in the broader law and policy context of the UN Paris Agreement and the global goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier. This approach not only illuminates the limitations and paradoxical nature of the crypto-industry’s climate commitments, but also the limitations and paradoxical nature of ‘‘net zero” itself as the predominant framing of national, subnational, and nonstate actors’ climate pledges. The article concludes by examining the …

Retrieving Encrypted Images Using Convolution Neural Network And Fully Homomorphic Encryption, Emad M. Alsaedi, Alaa Kadhim Farhan

Baghdad Science Journal

A content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is a technique used to retrieve images from an image database. However, the CBIR process suffers from less accuracy to retrieve images from an extensive image database and ensure the privacy of images. This paper aims to address the issues of accuracy utilizing deep learning techniques as the CNN method. Also, it provides the necessary privacy for images using fully homomorphic encryption methods by Cheon, Kim, Kim, and Song (CKKS). To achieve these aims, a system has been proposed, namely RCNN_CKKS, that includes two parts. The first part (offline processing) extracts automated high-level features based …

Executive Function Deficits And Borderline Personality Disorder Symptomatology In A Nonclinical Adult Sample: A Latent Variable Analysis, Keisha D. Veerapandian, Gabriel X. D. Tan, Nadyanna M. Majeed, Andree Hartanto

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

While borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptomatology has been studied extensively in clinical populations, the mechanisms underlying its manifestation in nonclinical populations remain largely understudied. One aspect of BPD symptomatology in nonclinical populations that has not been well studied is cognitive mechanisms, especially in relation to executive functions. To explore the cognitive mechanisms underlying BPD symptomatology in nonclinical populations, we analysed a large-scale dataset of 233 young adults that were administered with nine executive function tasks and BPD symptomatology assessments. Our structural equation modelling did not find any significant relations between latent factors of executive functions and the severity of BPD …

Using Virtual Simulations Of Future Extreme Weather Events To Communicate Climate Change Risk, Terry Van Gevelt, Brian G. Mcadoo, Jie Yang, Linlin Li, Fiona Williamson, Alex Scollay, Aileen Lam, Kwan Nok Chan, Adam D. Switzer Feb 2023

Using Virtual Simulations Of Future Extreme Weather Events To Communicate Climate Change Risk, Terry Van Gevelt, Brian G. Mcadoo, Jie Yang, Linlin Li, Fiona Williamson, Alex Scollay, Aileen Lam, Kwan Nok Chan, Adam D. Switzer

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Virtual simulations of future extreme weather events may prove an effective vehicle for climate change risk communication. To test this, we created a 3D virtual simulation of a future tropical cyclone amplified by climate change. Using an experimental framework, we isolated the effect of our simulation on risk perceptions and individual mitigation behaviour for a representative sample (n = 1507) of the general public in Hong Kong. We find that exposure to our simulation is systematically associated with a relatively small decrease in risk perceptions and individual mitigation behaviour. We suggest that this is likely due to climate change scepticism, …

Using a global dataset of over 840,000 equity, bond and syndicated loan investment banking deals, we build the fossil fuel investment brokerage profile of financial centres worldwide between 2000 and 2018. We also study whether city-level fossil fuel divestment commitments and country-level green banking policies impact the profile of fossil fuel financial centres over our study timeframe. We find that several financial centres shift their fossil fuel investment brokerage profiles substantially, including the asset classes in which they are active. However, we do not find any evidence that this is driven by city-level divestment commitments. In contrast, we find that …

Mirror: Mining Implicit Relationships Via Structure-Enhanced Graph Convolutional Networks, Jiaying Liu, Feng Xia, Jing Ren, Bo Xu, Guansong Pang, Lianhua Chi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Data explosion in the information society drives people to develop more effective ways to extract meaningful information. Extracting semantic information and relational information has emerged as a key mining primitive in a wide variety of practical applications. Existing research on relation mining has primarily focused on explicit connections and ignored underlying information, e.g., the latent entity relations. Exploring such information (defined as implicit relationships in this article) provides an opportunity to reveal connotative knowledge and potential rules. In this article, we propose a novel research topic, i.e., how to identify implicit relationships across heterogeneous networks. Specially, we first give a …

Real-Time Hierarchical Map Segmentation For Coordinating Multi-Robot Exploration, Tianze Luo, Zichen Chen, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Coordinating a team of autonomous agents to explore an environment can be done by partitioning the map of the environment into segments and allocating the segments as targets for the individual agents to visit. However, given an unknown environment, map segmentation must be conducted in a continuous and incremental manner. In this paper, we propose a novel real-time hierarchical map segmentation method for supporting multi-agent exploration of indoor environments, wherein clusters of regions of segments are formed hierarchically from randomly sampled points in the environment. Each cluster is then assigned with a cost-utility value based on the minimum cost possible …

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper describes a dataset collected by infrared thermography, a non-contact, non-intrusive technique to acquire data and analyze the built environment in various aspects. While most studies focus on the city and building scales, an observatory installed on a rooftop provides high temporal and spatial resolution observations with dynamic interactions on the district scale. The rooftop infrared thermography observatory with a multi-modal platform capable of assessing a wide range of dynamic processes in urban systems was deployed in Singapore. It was placed on the top of two buildings that overlook the outdoor context of the National University of Singapore campus. …

Customised Multi-Energy Pricing: Model And Solutions, Qiuyi Hong, Fanlin Meng, Jian Liu Feb 2023

Customised Multi-Energy Pricing: Model And Solutions, Qiuyi Hong, Fanlin Meng, Jian Liu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

With the increasing interdependence among energies (e.g., electricity, natural gas and heat) and the development of a decentralized energy system, a novel retail pricing scheme in the multi-energy market is demanded. Therefore, the problem of designing a customized multi-energy pricing scheme for energy retailers is investigated in this paper. In particular, the proposed pricing scheme is formulated as a bilevel optimization problem. At the upper level, the energy retailer (leader) aims to maximize its profit. Microgrids (followers) equipped with energy converters, storage, renewable energy sources (RES) and demand response (DR) programs are located at the lower level and minimize their …

Gender pay equity for academics continues to be elusive. Adding to scholarship around structural barriers to gender equity in academic settings, we investigate the link between scholarly performance and compensation. We expect high research productivity to be differentially associated with compensation outcomes for men and women. Building on social role theory, we hypothesize that these relationships are contingent upon whether researchers are inside or outside of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Using the h-index, compensation, and researcher demographics for 3033 STEM and social and behavioral sciences (SBS) researchers from 17 R1 universities, we applied multilevel modeling techniques and showed …

Enhanced Two-Step Deep-Learning Approach For Electromagnetic-Inverse-Scattering Problems: Frequency Extrapolation And Scatterer Reconstruction, Huan Huan Zhang, He Ming Yao, Lijun Jiang, Michael Ng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electromagnetic-inverse-scattering (EMIS) problem is solved by a novel two-step deep-learning (DL) approach in this article. The newly proposed two-step DL approach not only predicts the multifrequency EM scattered field, but also overcomes the limitation of the conventional methods for solving EMIS problems, such as expensive computational cost, strong ill-conditions, and invalidity on high contrast. In the first step, the complex-valued deep residual convolutional neural network (DRCNN) is utilized to predict multifrequency EM scattered fields only using single-frequency EM scattered field information. Based on a new complex-valued deep convolutional encoder-decoder (DCED) structure, the second step utilizes the obtained multifrequency EM …

Learning Relation Prototype From Unlabeled Texts For Long-Tail Relation Extraction, Yixin Cao, Jun Kuang, Ming Gao, Aoying Zhou, Yonggang Wen, Tat-Seng Chua Feb 2023

Learning Relation Prototype From Unlabeled Texts For Long-Tail Relation Extraction, Yixin Cao, Jun Kuang, Ming Gao, Aoying Zhou, Yonggang Wen, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Relation Extraction (RE) is a vital step to complete Knowledge Graph (KG) by extracting entity relations from texts. However, it usually suffers from the long-tail issue. The training data mainly concentrates on a few types of relations, leading to the lack of sufficient annotations for the remaining types of relations. In this paper, we propose a general approach to learn relation prototypes from unlabeled texts, to facilitate the long-tail relation extraction by transferring knowledge from the relation types with sufficient training data. We learn relation prototypes as an implicit factor between entities, which reflects the meanings of relations as well …
