Attacking The Yield Plateau: Assessing The Nutrient Status Of Kentucky Alfalfa Stands, W. R. Fleming, C. D. Teutsch, E. L. Ritchey, J. H. Grove Feb 2023

Attacking The Yield Plateau: Assessing The Nutrient Status Of Kentucky Alfalfa Stands, W. R. Fleming, C. D. Teutsch, E. L. Ritchey, J. H. Grove

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Soil and tissue analyses indicated that alfalfa yields may be limited in some cases by soil fertility. Soil pH was below the optimal range in more than 40% of the fields sampled. This may result in decreased nitrogen fixation and nutrient availability. Potassium was reported low in approximately one‐quarter of the sampled stands according to tissue analysis. This was not unexpected since hay production removes large quantities of potash. Sulfur and magnesium were reported low in 13 and 23 percent of stands, respectively. More work is needed to better understand if these two 2023 Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference …

Potential Yield Of Cocksfoot (Dactylis Glomerata) Monocultures In Response To Irrigation And Nitrogen, A. Mills, D. J. Moot, R. L. Lucas, P. D. Jamieson, B. A. Mckenzie Feb 2023

Potential Yield Of Cocksfoot (Dactylis Glomerata) Monocultures In Response To Irrigation And Nitrogen, A. Mills, D. J. Moot, R. L. Lucas, P. D. Jamieson, B. A. Mckenzie

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Cocksfoot is a widely sown grass in temperate pastures. However, while potential yield of cocksfoot can exceed 28 t DM/ha per year, it is often restricted by water, temperature and nitrogen (N). Of these, Peri et al. (2002) showed that N was severely limiting in all seasons. The aim of this study was to confirm the potential yield of cocksfoot and quantify the extent of yield reductions due to environmental constraints.

Diverse Forage Mixtures Effect On Herbage Yield, Sward Composition, And Dairy Cattle Performance, M. A. Sanderson, K. Soder, N. Brzezinski, S. Goslee, H. Skinner, M. Wachendorf, F. Taube, L. Muller

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Managing complex mixtures of plants to take advantage of spatial and temporal variability in land and climate may be one ecological approach to increase productivity of pastures. We tested the hypothesis that complex mixtures of forage species would yield more herbage and reduce weed competition compared with a simple grass-legume mixture in grazed pastures.

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of moulds which have adverse effects on humans, animals, and crops and result in illnesses and economic losses. The toxins may occur in storage under conditions favourable for the growth of the toxin-producing fungus or fungi. The highest forage concentration of toxins was found in horizontal storage methods such as bunker silos and feed piles, which were left open to oxygen. In any fermentation storage system, temperature and the presence of moisture is sufficient for toxin production. In a plastic covered storage system, oxygen penetration is slowed but not eliminated. The longer silage is stored, the …

Stochastic Modeling Of The Eruption History Of Nyiragongo Volcano In The Virunga Volcanic Province, Western Branch Of The East African Rift System, Thystere M. Bantidi, Georges T. Mavonga

Statistics in Volcanology

The modeling of statistical distribution of the eruptive frequency provides basic information to quantitatively assess the volcanic hazard and constrain the physics of the eruptive process. Here, we discuss the statistics of the time series of lateral eruptions of the Nyiragongo volcano in the Virunga Volcanic Province, western branch of the East African Rift System. We examine eruption data with a volcanic explosivity index of at least 1 listed in the Global Volcanism Network Bulletins. After investigating the completeness, stationarity, and independence of the eruption time series, we employ five distribution models (Brownian passage time, gamma, log-logistic, lognormal, and Weibull) …

Space Environment Effects On The Electron Yields Of Ldef Thermal Control Coatings, Trace Taylor, Matthew Robertson, Heather Allen, Jr Dennison, Michael Guy, Emily Willis

Journal Articles

Space-environment-induced degradation of white thermal control coatings from the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) was investigated. Much of the exterior of the LDEF was painted with a white thermal control coating, Aeroglaze A276; and most of the interior was coated with a black thermal control coating, Aeroglaze Z306. Outgassing from these coatings and other LDEF materials interacted with the white surface when exposed to sunlight after volatile materials condensed on the LDEF surfaces. Surface morphology was characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopies. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy were used to identify the chemical compounds and elements present …

Impacting African American Student Achievement In The Middle School Stem Classroom By Teaching Mathematics Through Arts Integration And Design Thinking, Robert Lippert, Tjuannia R. Seals Feb 2023

Impacting African American Student Achievement In The Middle School Stem Classroom By Teaching Mathematics Through Arts Integration And Design Thinking, Robert Lippert, Tjuannia R. Seals

Dissertations

Middle school is a transitional period in which many students experience content-specific teachers, travel between classrooms, and explore extracurricular activity options for the first time. Historically, African American middle school students have not fared well in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) on standardized assessments, performing significantly below their Caucasian counterparts in mathematics and science. From the beginning of their academic careers, a lack of access to quality teachers, excessive use of direct instruction strategies, and a lack of resources in their school communities, contribute to their overall apathy towards the subject matter and factor into their underperformance. As a …

The Neuroendovascular Procedures In The Cath Lab: An Educational Intervention, Jolly M. Kuruvilla Feb 2023

The Neuroendovascular Procedures In The Cath Lab: An Educational Intervention, Jolly M. Kuruvilla

Dissertations

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a major cause of disability. Catheter-based therapies for acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke have emerged as the latest model of care for patients experiencing stroke. Catheterization laboratories are now performing neuroendovascular procedures such as thrombectomy and embolization for stroke; it is critical that nurses assist with cardiac catheterization be proficient in neuroendovascular procedures. The project began with a clinical question: Among nurses practicing in a cath lab, will there be a difference in knowledge level and clinical competencies in preparing and monitoring patients for thrombectomy and embolization (neuroendovascular procedures) before and …

The Policy And Practice Of Mathematics Mastery: The Effects Of Neoliberalism And Neoconservatism On Curriculum Reform., N Pratt, J Alderton Feb 2023

The Policy And Practice Of Mathematics Mastery: The Effects Of Neoliberalism And Neoconservatism On Curriculum Reform., N Pratt, J Alderton

Plymouth Institute of Education

This paper explores how the twin processes of neoliberalism and neoconservatism work together on, and through, curricula and their associated pedagogies. It bridges the gap between policy and classroom practice, focusing on the particular example of the school subject of mathematics and the notion of mastery, operationalised in the English education system as Teaching for Mastery (TfM). From this context it develops a theoretical argument using Dean’s analytics of government as part of a broader Foucauldian frame, to analyse how TfM is constructed as a particular policy truth. It then shifts the analysis from a wide, social one to the …

Effects Of Particle Diameter And Inlet Flow Rate On Gas-Solid Flow Patterns Of Fluidized Bed, Zhenjiang Zhao, Ling Zhou, Ling Bai, Wanning Lv, Ramesh K Agarwal Feb 2023

Effects Of Particle Diameter And Inlet Flow Rate On Gas-Solid Flow Patterns Of Fluidized Bed, Zhenjiang Zhao, Ling Zhou, Ling Bai, Wanning Lv, Ramesh K Agarwal

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The complex multiscale characteristics of particle flow are notoriously difficult to predict. In this study, the evolution process of bubbles and the variation of bed height were investigated by conducting high-speed photographic experiments to verify the reliability of numerical simulations. The gas-solid flow characteristics of bubbling fluidized beds with different particle diameters and inlet flow rates were systematically investigated by coupling computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM). The results show that the fluidization in the fluidized bed will change from bubbling fluidization to turbulent fluidization and finally to slugging fluidization, and the conversion process is related to …

Predicting Patient-Specific Tumor Dynamics: How Many Measurements Are Necessary?, Isha Harshe, Heiko Enderling, Renee Brady-Nicholls

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Acquiring sufficient data is imperative to accurately predict tumor growth dynamics and effectively treat patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the number of volume measurements necessary to predict breast tumor growth dynamics using the logistic growth model. The model was calibrated to tumor volume data from 18 untreated breast cancer patients using a varying number of measurements interpolated at clinically relevant timepoints with different levels of noise (0-20%). Error-to-model parameters and the data were compared to determine the sufficient number of measurements needed to accurately determine growth dynamics. We found that without noise, three tumor volume measurements …

Marginalized Populations And Trauma-Informed Practices At The Secondary Level: Understanding The Connections Between Trauma Exposure And Academic Outcomes Through An Intersectional Framework, Kirsten Hany Feb 2023

Marginalized Populations And Trauma-Informed Practices At The Secondary Level: Understanding The Connections Between Trauma Exposure And Academic Outcomes Through An Intersectional Framework, Kirsten Hany

Theses and Dissertations

This research seeks to understand the relationship between marginalized identities and trauma in adolescents in relation to classroom outcomes, both behavioral and academic, through an intersectional framework. A synthesized review of literature as well as a quantitative study using the HSLS:09 data was conducted to discern how marginalized populations experience trauma in the school environment, and how that trauma impacts academic outcomes. The conclusions drawn through the review of literature and research suggest that marginalized students experience trauma at higher rates as well as disruption of academic outcomes. These conclusions are disseminated in chapter III which is a practitioner piece …
