Structural Design, Modeling, And Analysis Of The Wing For A World Speed Record-Breaking Turbo-Prop Racing Airplane, Joseph C. Hammond
Structural Design, Modeling, And Analysis Of The Wing For A World Speed Record-Breaking Turbo-Prop Racing Airplane, Joseph C. Hammond
Master's Theses
The Cal Poly SLO Turbo-Prop Racer (TP Racer) is a vehicle in development with the goal to break the world record for fastest turbo-prop aircraft measured over a 3-kilometer strip. This thesis presents the structural design, modeling, and analysis of the wing of Cal Poly SLO TP Racer. Methodology behind analyzing the wing is presented through finite element modeling elements and a mesh study. This is followed by development of structure through geometry and laminate estimations. The wing structure estimates and loading conditions are then modeled in FEMAP. Initial estimates are analyzed and reviewed – overbuilt, underbuilt, and incorrectly modeled …

Racketframes: A Dataframe Implementation For The Racket Programming Language, Shubham Kahal
Master's Theses
The DataFrame is a powerful table-like data structure used frequently in Data Science, the in-demand and innovative field focused on the extraction of valuable insights from data. Typically, datasets are not perfect upon collection and need to be prepared so that the resulting dataset is useful for statistical analysis. A DataFrame API supports optimized methods such as, selecting, aggregating and filtering rows, columns, and cells as well as renaming row and column labels. It also supports methods for normalizing data, merging data, adding new columns and labelling missing data among numerous other features. An API to work with tabular data …
Psf Sampling In Fluorescence Image Deconvolution, Eric A. Inman
Psf Sampling In Fluorescence Image Deconvolution, Eric A. Inman
Master's Theses
All microscope imaging is largely affected by inherent resolution limitations because of out-of-focus light and diffraction effects. The traditional approach to restoring the image resolution is to use a deconvolution algorithm to “invert” the effect of convolving the volume with the point spread function. However, these algorithms fall short in several areas such as noise amplification and stopping criterion. In this paper, we try to reconstruct an explicit volumetric representation of the fluorescence density in the sample and fit a neural network to the target z-stack to properly minimize a reconstruction cost function for an optimal result. Additionally, we do …
Trajectory-Tracking Control Of The Ball-And-Plate System, Dominic E. Riccoboni
Trajectory-Tracking Control Of The Ball-And-Plate System, Dominic E. Riccoboni
Master's Theses
The Mechatronics group in the Mechanical Engineering department of Cal Poly is interested in creating a demonstration of a ball-and-plate trajectory tracking controller on hardware. The display piece will serve to inspire engineering students to pursue Mechatronics and control theory as an area of study. The ball-and-plate system is open-loop unstable, underactuated, and has complicated, nonlinear equations of motion. These features present substantial challenges for control - especially if the objective is trajectory tracking. Because the system is underactuated, common nonlinear trajectory tracking control techniques are ineffective. This thesis lays out a theoretical foundation for controlling the hardware.

No Sense Of Decency, Kathryn E. Miller
No Sense Of Decency, Kathryn E. Miller
Articles
For nearly seventy years, the Court has assessed Eighth Amendment claims by evaluating “the evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society.” In this Article, I examine the evolving standards of decency test, which has long been a punching bag for critics on both the right and the left. Criticism of the doctrine has been fierce, but largely academic until recent years. Some fault the test for being too majoritarian, while others argue that it provides few constraints on the Justices’ discretion, permitting their personal predilections to rule the day. For many, the test is seen …

New Structures Of Continuous Functions, B.R. Pattanashetti, P.G. Patil
Baghdad Science Journal
Continuous functions are novel concepts in topology. Many topologists contributed to the theory of continuous functions in topology. The present authors continued the study on continuous functions by utilizing the concept of gpα-closed sets in topology and introduced the concepts of weakly, subweakly and almost continuous functions. Further, the properties of these functions are established.

Line Regular Fuzzy Semigraphs, Archana S., Preethi Kuttipulackal
Baghdad Science Journal
This paper introduce two types of edge degrees (line degree and near line degree) and total edge degrees (total line degree and total near line degree) of an edge in a fuzzy semigraph, where a fuzzy semigraph is defined as (V, σ, μ, η) defined on a semigraph G* in which σ : V → [0, 1], μ : VxV → [0, 1] and η : X → [0, 1] satisfy the conditions that for all the vertices u, v in the vertex set, μ(u, v) ≤ σ(u) ᴧ σ(v) and η(e) = μ(u1, u2) ᴧ μ(u2, u3) ᴧ … …
Stability Of Complement Degree Polynomial Of Graphs, Safeera K, Anil Kumar V
Stability Of Complement Degree Polynomial Of Graphs, Safeera K, Anil Kumar V
Baghdad Science Journal
A graph is a structure amounting to a set of objects in which some pairs of the objects are in some sense related. The objects correspond to mathematical abstractions called vertices (also called nodes or points) and each of the related pairs of vertices is called an edge (also called link or line). A directed graph is a graph in which edges have orientation. A simple graph is a graph that does not have more than one edge between any two vertices and no edge starts and ends at the same vertex. For a simple undirected graph G with order …

Existence Of Fixed Points For Expansive Mappings In Complete Strong Altering Js-Metric Space, X. M. Jeffin Varunnya, P. Gnanachandra, B. Anandapriya
Baghdad Science Journal
The paper aims at initiating and exploring the concept of extended metric known as the Strong Altering JS-metric, a stronger version of the Altering JS-metric. The interrelation of Strong Altering JS-metric with the b-metric and dislocated metric has been analyzed and some examples have been provided. Certain theorems on fixed points for expansive self-mappings in the setting of complete Strong Altering JS-metric space have also been discussed.
Institutional Design And Policy Responsiveness In Us States, Scott J. Lacombe
Institutional Design And Policy Responsiveness In Us States, Scott J. Lacombe
Government: Faculty Publications
There is significant disagreement on the moderating role of institutions on policy responsive- ness, yet overwhelmingly research in state politics has focused on single institutions. This project leverages a new aggregate scale of state institutions to evaluate if the collective insti- tutional context moderates the influence of public opinion on policy. I use a recently released latent scale of institutional context and find that high levels of accountability pressure strongly strengthen public opinion’s influence on policy for both economic and social policy, while the strength of a state’s checks and balance system is largely unrelated to policy responsiveness. These results …

Breaking The Cycle: Women’S Experience In Postsecondary Agricultural And Extension Education, Lauren L. Cline, Haley Rosson, Penny Pennington Weeks
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
The “leaky educational pipeline” metaphor refers to the steady tapering off of women obtaining graduate degrees and reaching the level of a tenured faculty member, although the number of women earning college degrees has surpassed males since the 1980s. Women are disproportionately represented among faculty and leadership at land-grant institutions and in the agricultural education profession. The purpose of this study was to provide a synthesis of women’s experience in postsecondary agricultural and extension education (AEE) by describing the common and diverging challenges, opportunities, and mentoring experiences of women faculty and graduate students in the profession. The study was a …

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Using a retrospective post-then-pre design, we asked Extension professionals to reflect on their work-life balance before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives were to assess whether work-life balance variables (work interference with personal life, personal life interference with work, and work-personal life enhancement) changed from before to during the pandemic, whether any changes in work-life balance were concentrated in households with parents who had caregiving responsibilities, and whether changes in any of these work-life balance variables were associated with respondents’ gender, marital status, or work location. Findings indicated that (1) personal life interference with work significantly increased and work-personal …

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
As Agricultural Education shifts to a more science-based curriculum to help fulfill shortcomings of the current United States science test scores, teachers implementing Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) is becoming more important. For Agriculture Educators to do this, training is necessary for both new and experienced educators. This study was conducted to gauge teacher attitudes toward and ability to integrate IBL in the classroom to meet these goals. Teacher knowledge was also assessed in four life science categories. Study results indicate that teachers have positive attitudes toward learning about IBL and implementing the model in the classrooms. Teachers also gained more content …
Why The 30 Percent Mansfield Rule Can't Work: A Supply-Demand Empirical Analysis Of Leadership In The Legal Profession, Paola Cecchi-Dimeglio
Why The 30 Percent Mansfield Rule Can't Work: A Supply-Demand Empirical Analysis Of Leadership In The Legal Profession, Paola Cecchi-Dimeglio
Fordham Law Review
The Mansfield Rule proposes that if 30 percent of the candidate pool is drawn from underrepresented groups, then a legal workplace will become more diverse and inclusive as a result. However, across the legal profession, statistics related to the numbers of women and other underrepresented groups in leadership roles continue to paint a bleak picture of diversity and inclusion. Professor Cecchi-Dimeglio’s Essay presents a supply-demand empirical analysis of the legal profession at the leadership level, and argues that the 30 percent Mansfield Rule ultimately does not enhance diversity in the legal profession, especially in leadership positions.

Energy Performance Of Double Skin Façade For High-Rise Residential Building In Abu Dhabi, Narmeen Tariq Abu Hilal
Energy Performance Of Double Skin Façade For High-Rise Residential Building In Abu Dhabi, Narmeen Tariq Abu Hilal
Theses
The hot climate of the UAE generates unique challenges for architects and building engineers looking for energy efficiency in high-rise residential buildings. The use of glass building facades has been increased; this type of façade usually comes with a high air-conditioning cost due to the higher heat gain. To design energy-efficient buildings, it is essential to adapt the principles of sustainability and innovative transparent glass façade design into practice as the building facade is a major element in determining the amount of energy used in buildings. Construction details, methods, and materials of the residential building facade play an important role …

In search of synthetically accessible open-chain analogs of PD144418 or 5-(1-propyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridin-3-yl)-3-(p-tolyl)isoxazole, a highly potent sigma-1 receptor (σ1R) ligand, we herein report the design and synthesis of sixteen arylated acyl urea derivatives. Design aspects included modeling the target compounds for drug-likeness, docking at σ1R crystal structure 5HK1, and contrasting the lower energy molecular conformers with that of the receptor-embedded PD144418—a molecule we opined that our compounds could mimic pharmacologically. Synthesis of our acyl urea target compounds was achieved in two facile steps which involved first generating the N-(phenoxycarbonyl) benzamide intermediate and then coupling it with the appropriate amines—weakly to strongly …
Improved Object Re-Identification Via More Efficient Embeddings, Ertugrul Bayraktar
Improved Object Re-Identification Via More Efficient Embeddings, Ertugrul Bayraktar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Object reidentification (ReID) in cluttered rigid scenes is a challenging problem especially when same-looking objects coexist in the scene. ReID is accepted to be one of the most powerful tools for matching the correct identities to each individual object when issues such as occlusion, missed detections, multiple same-looking objects coexisting in the same scene, and disappearance of objects from the view and/or revisiting the same region arise. We propose a novel framework towards more efficient object ReID, improved object reidentification (IO-ReID), to perform object ReID in challenging scenes with real-time processing in mind. The proposed approach achieves distinctive and efficient …
The Sport Marketing Portfolio Matrix: A Theory-Integrative Exploration Of Fans’ “Buy,” “Hold,” And “Sell” Behaviors, Kirk Damon Aiken, Richard M. Campbell, Ajay Sukhdial
The Sport Marketing Portfolio Matrix: A Theory-Integrative Exploration Of Fans’ “Buy,” “Hold,” And “Sell” Behaviors, Kirk Damon Aiken, Richard M. Campbell, Ajay Sukhdial
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
The field of sport marketing lacks a comprehensive understanding of how fan behaviors link directly to sport products. This work introduces a model that accurately categorizes sport products, better recognizes fan behaviors, and simultaneously provides strategic guidance to sport managers. The model integrates the foremost theories of fan behavior with the financial theory of portfolio management. This novel perspective posits that sport fans should be viewed as “investors” who buy, hold, and sell athletes and teams. Fans manage their individual portfolios in line with personal goals, values, and social influences. The integration of theories bears significant implications regarding how sport …

Aims. We present new calculations of collision cross sections for state-to-state transitions between the rotational states in an H2O + H2O system, which are used to generate a new database of collisional rate coefficients for cometary and planetary applications.
Methods. Calculations were carried out using a mixed quantum-classical theory approach that is implemented in the code MQCT. The large basis set of rotational states used in these calculations permits us to predict thermally averaged cross sections for 441 transitions in para- and ortho-H2O in a broad range of temperatures.
Results. It is found that …
Implied Organizations And Technological Governance, Shawn Bayern
Implied Organizations And Technological Governance, Shawn Bayern
William & Mary Law Review
Common law historically adapted creatively and gracefully to the emergence of new types of organizations. Today, statutory forms of organizations predominate. But statutory organizational forms may be ill-suited to govern the novel, loosely coupled, and rapidly changing organizations that can arise through distributed technological mechanisms. This Article suggests that the common law of implied organizations can be a fertile ground for legal responses to technological organizations and indeed may be important not just for regulating such organizations but for giving them important legal capabilities.
Making Virtual Things, Joshua A.T. Fairfield
Making Virtual Things, Joshua A.T. Fairfield
William & Mary Law Review
People value virtual things—such as NFTs—because such assets trigger and satisfy deep-seated narratives of property and ownership. The cause of the recent series of failures to regulate virtual assets, and the resulting crashes, has been a failure to take seriously the ways people perceive and use the assets. Current legal frameworks fail to support buyers’ and users’ expectations of ownership in virtual things they purchase.
Making virtual things is a matter of social construction of value. Virtual things, like real-world things, have value because a community values them for a purpose. It therefore makes no sense to discount how and …

A Modified Space Vector Modulation Based Rotor Flux Oriented Control Of Six-Phase Asymmetrical Induction Motor Drive, Krunal Shah, Rakesh Maurya
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In view of the attractive features like improved torque density, reduction torque pulsation, superior fault tolerance, reduced power rating of voltage source converter, and sterling noise characteristics of six-phase asymmetrical induction motor (SPAIM) as compared to its three-phase counterpart, the SPAIM is considered for the study. In this paper, mathematical modelling of SPAIM is carried out in the synchronous reference frame and then indirect rotor field-oriented control (IRFOC) of SPAIM using a modified carrier wave-based space vector modulation (SVM) scheme is developed. A Simulink model of the proposed system configuration is developed and a simulation study is carried out. In …

The presence of moisture beneath the pavement surface is a matter of great concerns as it is responsible for significant distresses such as asphalt concrete (AC) stripping, fatigue cracking, rutting, and poor durability of asphalt mixes. The objective of this study was to evaluate and recommend an asphalt mixture design that would provide superior performance against AC stripping and cracking. To achieve this objective, a laboratory test factorial was developed to evaluate the use of nanomaterials, emerging anti-stripping agents, warm-mix asphalt technologies, and adhesion promotors. In the experimental program, the modified Lottman test (AASHTO T 283) and the Indirect Tensile …

This review summarizes recent works, all using a specific atomistic approach, that predict and explain the occurrence of key features for neuromorphic computing in three archetypical dipolar materials, when they are subject to THz excitations. The main ideas behind such atomistic approach are provided, and illustration of model relaxor ferroelectrics, antiferroelectrics, and normal ferroelectrics are given, highlighting the important potential of polar materials as candidates for neuromorphic computing. Some peculiar emphases are made in this Review, such as the connection between neuromorphic features and percolation theory, local minima in energy path, topological transitions and/or anharmonic oscillator model, depending on the …
