Rich Information In The Acoustic Signals From Feeding And Grazing In Ruminants, Montague W. Demment, J. R. Galli, Carlos A. Cangiano, Emilio A. Laca
Rich Information In The Acoustic Signals From Feeding And Grazing In Ruminants, Montague W. Demment, J. R. Galli, Carlos A. Cangiano, Emilio A. Laca
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Because of their impact on productivity and the environment, feeding behaviour, ingestion and rumination are critical to understand intake in grazing ruminants. Many systems, mainly mechanical, have been developed to measure ingestive behaviour. However, these systems have problems, including mechanical failure and the inability to distinguish between the complex jaw movements of prehension and ingestion (Laca et al., 1994). The sounds generated by these behaviours are rich in information that holds potential not only to distinguish and count behaviours, but also identify aspects of the nature of the foods ingested.

The Sound Of Chewing, J. R. Galli, Carlos A. Cangiano, Emilio A. Laca, M. W. Demment
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Acoustic biotelemetry has been proposed as a way to count ingestive bites and chews of grazing animals. Recent work has indicated the possibility that detailed analysis of 'sounds of chewing' contains information about other characteristics of the ingestive process that can be used to study grazing behaviour of free ranging animals (Laca & Wallis DeVries, 2000), or to monitor stall-fed animals in more detail.

Development Of A 2-Dimensional Video-Acoustic Tool For Monitoring Bite Placement, Wendy Griffiths, V. Alchanatis, R. Nitzan, V. Ostrovsky, E. Ben-Moshe, R. Yonatan, S. Brenner, H. Baram, E. D. Ungar
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Studies of grazing behaviour conducted at the spatial scale of a feeding station demonstrate that intake rate declines with increasing depletion, a response attributed to an increase in bite overlap (Ginnett et al., 1999; Ungar et al., 2001). In order to understand the rules that govern bite placement, a methodology is required that can map the sequential placement of bites on the sward surface. We developed a video-acoustic tool to achieve this and report the findings of using the tool on small uniform patches of herbage.
Spatial Heterogeneity Of Seasonal Grazing Pressure Created By Herd Movement Patterns On Hilly Rangelands Using Gps And Gis, A. I. Arnon, E. D. Ungar, T. Svoray, A. Perevolotsky, M. Shachak, H. Baram, R. Yonatan, E. Ben-Moshe, S. Brenner, D. Barkai
Spatial Heterogeneity Of Seasonal Grazing Pressure Created By Herd Movement Patterns On Hilly Rangelands Using Gps And Gis, A. I. Arnon, E. D. Ungar, T. Svoray, A. Perevolotsky, M. Shachak, H. Baram, R. Yonatan, E. Ben-Moshe, S. Brenner, D. Barkai
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The spatial heterogeneity of grazing pressure on extensive rangelands has management implications (Adler et al., 2001) but it has traditionally been difficult to quantify. Combination of technologies based on GPS (Global Positioning System) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is a quantum leap in our ability to address this issue. These tools were used to estimate the spatial heterogeneity of grazing pressure at a farm scale, and examine the relation between local landscape features and local grazing pressure.
Chew-Bites, Jaw Movement Allocation And Bite Rate In Grazing Cattle As Identified By Acoustic Monitoring, E. D. Ungar, N. Ravid, T. Zada, E. Ben-Moshe, R. Yonatan, S. Brenner, H. Baram, A. Genizi
Chew-Bites, Jaw Movement Allocation And Bite Rate In Grazing Cattle As Identified By Acoustic Monitoring, E. D. Ungar, N. Ravid, T. Zada, E. Ben-Moshe, R. Yonatan, S. Brenner, H. Baram, A. Genizi
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Bite rate derives from the time budget of the biting and chewing processes of intake, which are both performed by jaw movements. A new type of jaw movement was revealed by acoustic monitoring in cattle - the "chew-bite" -which chews herbage already in the mouth and harvests fresh herbage with the same jaw movement (Laca et al., 1992). Chew-biting should enable the animal to reduce the total number of jaw movements performed per bite without reducing the number of chews per bite. We examined the variation among individuals in the allocation of jaw movements between the three types, and …

Contextualizing And Integrating Practices: Reclaiming Authenticity Lost From Translating Workplace Engineering Practices Into K-12 Standards, Anne E. Leak, Lindsay M. Owens, Kelly Norris Martin, Benjamin M. Zwickl
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
K-12 students need to become familiar with engineering because 21st-century careers integrate engineering practices across all science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. While the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) emphasize learning real science and engineering practices, further work is needed to authenticate engineering for K-12 education. The NGSS are presented in a way that merges a single general practice with a core disciplinary idea and cross-cutting concept. Based on this framing and underlying epistemology, NGSS engineering practices are often implemented as overgeneralized, isolated, and largely context-neutral. Yet, in the STEM workplace, practices are rarely done in isolation from one …

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
The most common manifestation of mycobacterial Tuberculosis (MTB) is a reactivation of latent infection affecting the lung. Extrapulmonary TB accounts for 12 %. Cases involving the gastrointestinal (GI)l tract account for 1-3%, with Esophageal TB accounting for 2.8 % of GI cases. Our case involves a 29-year-old male from Sub- Saharan Africa who had progressive symptoms of odynophagia, retrosternal chest pain, and weight loss. Upon further evaluation was found to have esophageal tuberculosis with no pulmonary symptoms/origin. This case demonstrates the presentation, evaluation, and treatment

Convergence And Transdisciplinary Teaching In Quantitative Biology, Robert Mayes, Joseph Dauer, David Owens
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The United States National Science and Technology Council has made a call for improving STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education at the convergence of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The National Science Foundation (NSF) views convergence as the merging of ideas, approaches, and technologies from widely diverse fields of knowledge to stimulate innovation and discovery. Teaching convergency requires moving to the transdisciplinary level of integration where there is deep integration of skills, disciplines, and knowledge to solve a challenging real-world problem. Here we present a summary on convergence and transdisciplinary teaching. We then provide examples of convergence and transdisciplinary …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Mammalian hibernators undergo substantial changes in metabolic function throughout the seasonal hibernation cycle. We report here the polar metabolomic profile of white adipose tissue isolated from active and hibernating thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus). Polar compounds in white adipose tissue were extracted from five groups representing different timepoints throughout the seasonal activity-torpor cycle and analyzed using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in both the positive and negative ion modes. A total of 224 compounds out of 660 features detected after curation were annotated. Unsupervised clustering using principal component analysis revealed discrete clusters representing the different seasonal timepoints throughout …
Using Alternating Minimization And Convexified Carleman Weighted Objective Functional For A Time-Domain Inverse Scattering Problem, Nguyen T. Thanh
Using Alternating Minimization And Convexified Carleman Weighted Objective Functional For A Time-Domain Inverse Scattering Problem, Nguyen T. Thanh
College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
This paper considers a 1D time-domain inverse scattering problem for the Helmholtz equation in which penetrable scatterers are to be determined from boundary measurements of the scattering data. It is formulated as a coefficient identification problem for a wave equation. Using the Laplace transform, the inverse problem is converted into an overdetermined nonlinear system of partial differential equations. To solve this system, a Carleman weighted objective functional, which is proved to be strictly convex in an arbitrary set in a Hilbert space, is constructed. An alternating minimization algorithm is used to minimize the Carleman weighted objective functional. Numerical results are …

Boronate Affinity-Assisted Electrochemically Controlled Atrp For Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Aptasensing Of Carcinoembryonic Antigen, Qiong Hu, Shi-Qi Li, Yi-Yi Liang, Wen-Xing Feng, Yi-Lin Luo, Xiao-Jing Cao, Li Niu
Journal of Electrochemistry
As an acidic glycoprotein, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is of great value as a broad-spectrum tumor marker in the differential diagnosis and surveillance of malignant tumors. In this work, we report an electrochemical aptasensor for the ultrasensitive and highly selective detection of CEA, taking advantage of the dual amplification by the boronate affinity-assisted electrochemically controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (BA-eATRP). Specifically, the BA-eATRP-based electrochemical aptasensing of CEA involves the capture of target antigens by nucleic acid aptamers, the covalent crosslinking of ATRP initiators to CEA antigens via the selective interactions between the phenylboronic acid (PBA) group and the cis-diol group of …

Adaptive Quantum Information Processing In Non-Equilibrium Environments, Arshag Danageozian
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Solid state and condensed matter systems, such as diamond impurities, superconductors, quantum dots, and ion traps, constitute important physical platforms for various applications in quantum information processing (QIP). However, it has consistently been shown that all such modern platforms suffer from non-equilibrium behavior on timescales that are relevant for many important QIP tasks. The causes range from intrinsic non-equilibrium dynamics (e.g. in diamond) to the presence of various impurities with their own internal dynamics (e.g. in superconductors and quantum dots) or variations in the control fields used to stabilize the quantum matter (e.g. in ion traps). When reserving degrees of …

Phase Transitions And Magnetocaloric Effects In Metastable Phases Of Intermetallic Compounds, Tej Bahadur Poudel Chhetri
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The interplay between spin and lattice degrees of freedom in magnetic materials often results in interesting magnetoresponsive effects. The magnetocaloric effect is one such magnetothermal phenomenon that may be utilized in energy-efficient magnetic cooling systems. This effect becomes more prominent near a coupling of magnetic and structural transitions, i.e., magnetostructural transitions (MSTs). This dissertation investigates phase transitions (magnetic and structural) in metastable phases of MnNiGe- and MnCoGe-based compounds generated through high-pressure synthesis/annealing and thermal quenching techniques and assesses their magnetocaloric effects.
First, the effects of doping, hydrostatic pressure, and thermal quenching on phase transitions and related magnetocaloric effects in Mn …

Crafting charge transfer channels at titanium dioxide (TiO2) based photoanodes remain a pressing bottleneck in solar-to-chemical conversion technology. Despite the tremendous attempts, TiO2 as the promising photoanode material still suffers from sluggish charge transport kinetics. Herein, we propose an assembly strategy that involves the axial coordination grafting metalloporphyrin-based photosensitizer molecules (MP) onto the surface-modified TiO2 nanorods (NRs) photoanode, forming the composite MP/TiO2 NRs photoelectrode. As expected, the resulted unique MPB/TiO2 NRs photoelectrode displays significantly improved photocurrent density as compared to TiO2 NRs alone and MPA/TiO2 NRs photoelectrode. Scanning …
