The Role Of Cultural Capital In Improving Advanced Placement Outcomes, Kolbe Ricks Jun 2023

The Role Of Cultural Capital In Improving Advanced Placement Outcomes, Kolbe Ricks

Education Theses and Dissertations

This work delves into the potential benefits and criticism of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, with a specific focus on the necessity of cultural capital to address disparities in access and success. The researcher argues that the broad content coverage in AP courses often leads to conventional lecture-based instruction that does not value cultural capital and limits student engagement and outcomes. To rectify this, recommendations are made to incorporate pedagogical approaches like culturally relevant teaching and providing teacher feedback and support that allows for the successful implementation of these practices. Numerous studies indicate that participation in AP courses predicts success in …

Detection Of Subsidence In West-Central Florida Using Persistent Scatterer Interferometry And Near-Surface Geophysics, Tonian R. Robinson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three studies that employ Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI, also known as PSInSAR) to better understand how subsidence in west-central Florida relates to underlying geological processes. In the first study, near-surface geophysical methods (Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electrical Resistivity (ERT)), terrestrial remote sensing applications (Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and Structure from Motion (SfM)), and PSI were used to monitor the spatial and temporal behaviors of a suspected growing sinkhole in the Sandhill Boyscout Reservation, Hernando County, Florida. The survey area was located within and around a topographic low assumed to be the surface of the …

Enhancing The Safety And Reliability Of Closed-Loop Medical Control Systems, Shakil Mahmud Jun 2023

Enhancing The Safety And Reliability Of Closed-Loop Medical Control Systems, Shakil Mahmud

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is a rapidly advancing field that relies heavily on semi- or closed-loop Wearable and Implantable Medical Devices (WIMDs). In recent years, there has been renewed interest in clinical automation, with researchers looking for innovative solutions for Physiological Closed-Loop Control Systems (PCLCS). However, these devices can have various security issues, including vulnerabilities in software and firmware, physical attacks, weak encryption/authentication, and compromised system components. Government agencies, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA), emphasize the importance of ensuring the safety and reliability of PCLCS since malfunctioning medical devices can …

The Continuing Influence Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Tertiary Education, Gary J. Burkholder, Erwin Krauskopf Jun 2023

The Continuing Influence Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Tertiary Education, Gary J. Burkholder, Erwin Krauskopf

Higher Learning Research Communications

We are pleased to publish the first regular issue (Volume 13, Issue 1) of Higher Learning Research Communications (HLRC) for 2023. While the World Health Organization and the governments and health departments in most of the world have ended the COVID-19 emergency, the effects of the pandemic on operations in higher education will likely continue for some time. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) published a report (Abdrasheva, 2022) that globally examines the state of higher education two years after the pandemic began. The authors noted that in the area of teaching and learning, “slow adaptation to …

STEMPS Faculty Publications

This paper presents a novel tutoring system to educate pre-university students about AI, a key issue to develop AI in Education for Sustainable Society. With the aim of following a learning-by-doing approach to AI, we decided to focus on robotics as the main application domain for the students’ activities. Specifically, the tutoring system is based on the Robobo educational robot, and its simulation environment. A prototype version of the tutoring system, called RoboboITS, has been released and tested in two in-person sessions with 17 students in a secondary school at Virginia (USA), leading to and promising outcomes for future development.

Lightweight And Effective Website Fingerprinting Over Encrypted Dns, Yong Shao, Kenneth Hernandez, Kia Yang, Eric Chan-Tin, Mohammed Abuhamad

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The DNS over HTTPS (DoH) protocol is implemented to improve the original DNS protocol that uses unencrypted DNS queries and responses. With the DNS traffic, an eavesdropper can easily identify websites that a user is visiting. In order to address this concern of web privacy, encryption is used by performing a DNS lookup over HTTPS. In this paper, we studied whether the encrypted DoH traffic could be exploited to identify websites that a user has visited. This is a different type of website fingerprinting by analyzing encrypted DNS network traffic rather than the network traffic between the client and the …

Privacy Preserving Identification Of Population Stratification For Collaborative Genomic Research, Leonard Dervishi, Wenbiao Li, Anisa Halimi, Xiaoqian Jiang, Jaideep Vaidya, Erman Ayday

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The rapid improvements in genomic sequencing technology have led to the proliferation of locally collected genomic datasets. Given the sensitivity of genomic data, it is crucial to conduct collaborative studies while preserving the privacy of the individuals. However, before starting any collaborative research effort, the quality of the data needs to be assessed. One of the essential steps of the quality control process is population stratification: identifying the presence of genetic difference in individuals due to subpopulations. One of the common methods used to group genomes of individuals based on ancestry is principal component analysis (PCA). In this article, we …

Rapid And Efficient Computation Of Cell Trajectories During Ultrasonic Focusing, Charles F. Babbs, Mary V. Lang

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

This biophysical analysis explores the first-principles physics of movement of white blood cell sized particles, suspended in an aqueous fluid and experiencing progressive or standing waves of acoustic pressure. In many current applications the cells are gradually nudged or herded toward the antinodes of the standing wave, providing a degree of acoustic focusing and concentration of the cells in layers perpendicular to the direction of sound propagation. Here the underlying biomechanics of this phenomenon are analyzed specifically for the viscous regime of water--as opposed to air--and for small diameter microscopic spheroids such as living cells--as opposed to large diameter, macroscopic …

Optimizing Repayment Strategies For Egyptian Construction Companies With Multiple Loans, Moataz Elkady

Theses and Dissertations

Optimizing Repayment Strategies for Egyptian Construction Companies with Multiple Loans is of utmost importance to efficiently allocate monthly income for loan repayment. The conventional practice of paying the minimum balance due each month leads to increased interest charges and prolonged repayment periods. In response, this research proposes a model for multiple loan repayment that considers the computational complexity involved.

The model is built on the foundation of mixed integer linear programming and aims to establish an optimal repayment schedule by minimizing the total cash required to repay the loans, prioritizing the repayment of loans before personal expenses. The implementation of …
