Platonism, De Re, And (Philosophy Of) Mathematical Practice, Marco Panza
Platonism, De Re, And (Philosophy Of) Mathematical Practice, Marco Panza
MPP Published Research
The chapter advances a reformulation of the classical problem of the nature of mathematical objects (if any), here called “Plato’s problem,” in line with the program of a philosophy of mathematical practice. It then provides a sketch of a platonist solution, following the same perspective. This solution disregards as nonsensical the question of the existence of abstract, and specifically mathematical, objects, by rather focusing on the modalities of our access to them: objects (in general, both concrete and abstract) are regarded as individual contents that we have (or can have) a de re epistemic access to. The question of the …

Powder coatings are a promising, solvent-free alternative to traditional liquid coatings due to the superior corrosion protection they provide. This study investigates the effects of incorporating montmorillonite-based nanoclay additives with different particle sizes into polyester/triglycidyl isocyanurate (polyester/TGIC) powder coatings. The objective is to enhance the corrosion-protective function of the coatings while addressing the limitations of commonly employed epoxy-based coating systems that exhibit inferior UV resistance. The anti-corrosive and surface qualities of the coatings were evaluated via neutral salt spray tests, electrochemical measurements, and surface analytical techniques. Results show that the nanoclay with a larger particle size of 18.38 µm (D50, …

How Do Pedestrians Perceive The Safety, Comfort, And Usefulness Of A Walking Space? An Exploratory Study Of Pedestrian Perception, Amanda Rifqa Marisa, Achmad Hery Fuad
Smart City
Car-oriented development has brought several negative impacts on human quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to pay more attention to walkability as one of the essential aspects of it, especially in the urban area. In the meantime, most research on walking and walkability still overlooks the role of the pedestrian's perspective in examining walkability. Hence, this research tries to fill the gap in walkability research by exploring the pedestrian perspectives on the safety, comfort, and usefulness of walking space as the three overlapping aspects between walkability and walking needs. This research took context in Suryakencana, Bogor City, Indonesia. To …

Implementation Of An Efficient Bayesian Search For Gravitational-Wave Bursts With Memory In Pulsar Timing Array Data, Jerry Sun, Paul T. Baker, Aaron D. Johnson, Dustin R. Madison, Xavier Siemens
Pacific Faculty Work
The standard Bayesian technique for searching pulsar timing data for gravitational-wave bursts with memory (BWMs) using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling is very computationally expensive to perform. In this paper, we explain the implementation of an efficient Bayesian technique for searching for BWMs. This technique makes use of the fact that the signal model for Earth-term BWMs (BWMs passing over the Earth) is fully factorizable. We estimate that this implementation reduces the computational complexity by a factor of 100. We also demonstrate that this technique gives upper limits consistent with published results using the standard Bayesian technique, and may …

The in situ generated catalytic system from the tetranuclear Ru–H complex [(PCy3)(CO)RuH]4(O)(OH)2 (1) with 3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone (L1) has been found to mediate a multicomponent deaminative coupling reaction of phenols with aldehydes and enamines to form xanthene products. The multicomponent C–H coupling reaction of phenols with 2-hydroxybenzaldehydes and cyclic enamines efficiently installed the tricyclic 1,3-dioxacin derivatives, while the analogous coupling reaction of phenols with 2-hydroxybenzaldehydes and triethylamine selectively formed bicyclic 1,5-dioxacyclic derivatives. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations established two energetically viable mechanistic pathways for the formation of xanthene products, in which both …

Catalan Numbers As Discrepancies For A Family Of Substitutions On Infinite Alphabets, Dirk Frettlöh, Alexey Garber, Neil Mañibo
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this work, we consider a class of substitutions on infinite alphabets and show that they exhibit a growth behaviour which is impossible for substitutions on finite alphabets. While for both settings the leading term of the tile counting function is exponential (and guided by the inflation factor), the behaviour of the second-order term is strikingly different. For the finite setting, it is known that the second term is also exponential or exponential times a polynomial. We exhibit a large family of examples where the second term is at least exponential in n divided by half-integer powers of n, where …

Effect Of Total Population, Population Density And Weighted Population Density On The Spread Of Covid-19 In Malaysia, Hui Shan Wong, Md Zobaer Hasan, Omar Sharif, Azizur Rahman
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Since November 2019, most countries across the globe have suffered from the disastrous consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic which redefined every aspect of human life. Given the inevitable spread and transmission of the virus, it is critical to acknowledge the factors that catalyse transmission of the disease. This research investigates the relation of the external demographic parameters such as total population, population density and weighted population density on the spread of Covid-19 in Malaysia. Pearson correlation and simple linear regression were utilized to identify the relation between the population-related variables and the spread of Covid-19 in Malaysia using data from …

Exploring Mental Models For Explainable Artificial Intelligence: Engaging Cross-Disciplinary Teams Using A Design Thinking Approach, Helen Sheridan, Emma Murphy Dr., Dympna O'Sullivan Dr.
Conference papers
Exploring end-users’ understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems’ behaviours and outputs is crucial in developing accessible Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) solutions. Investigating mental models of AI systems is core in understanding and explaining the often opaque, complex, and unpredictable nature of AI. Researchers engage surveys, interviews, and observations for software systems, yielding useful evaluations. However, an evaluation gulf still exists, primarily around comprehending end-users' understanding of AI systems It has been argued that by exploring theories related to human decision-making examining the fields of psychology, philosophy, and human computer interaction (HCI) in a more people-centric rather than product or technology-centric …
Entanglement In The Hawking Effect: From Astrophysical To Optical Black Holes, Dimitrios Kranas
Entanglement In The Hawking Effect: From Astrophysical To Optical Black Holes, Dimitrios Kranas
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Hawking effect is an exciting physical prediction lying at the intersection of the two most successful theories of the past century, namely, Einstein’s theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. In this dissertation, we put special emphasis on the quantum aspects of the Hawking process encoded in the entanglement shared by the emitted fluxes of created quanta. In particular, we employ sharp tools from quantum information theory to quantify the entanglement produced by the Hawking effect throughout the black hole evaporation process. Our framework allows us to extend previous calculations of entanglement to a larger set of cases, for instance, …
Characterizing Wind-Wave Flow Physics And Loading Effects On Power Transmission Systems And Offshore Wind Turbines, Tianqi Ma
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Recent extreme hurricanes caused extensive damage to critical civil infrastructure. Accurate modeling of the extreme complex wind fields and coupled wind-wave fields is essential to quantify the single wind or combined wind-wave loading effects on the structures. This research aims to characterize wind and wind-wave flow physics to quantify the loading effect on power transmission systems and offshore wind turbines.
First, a microscale (∼km) high-fidelity high-resolution computational model is developed to simulate hurricane wind fields with detailed physics. The generated wind field is applied to analyze the structural response of a power transmission system. The proposed hurricane boundary layer (HBL) …

As the world and organizations struggled to overcome the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, I, the Founder and CEO of Plant A Seed, also known as Plant a Seed Africa, used this chaotic period to assess and address issues facing the organization. Multiple challenges are addressed, including the pandemic, financial, political, and leadership. I created a new leadership strategy that switches between pacesetting, visionary, and transformational leadership styles. The new organizational change model will use the 5-F or Plant A Seed 5-F model.

Targetting Risk Lovers? Taxation Of Private Pension Savings, Risk Preferences, And Gender, Bo Larsson, Jenny Säve-Söderbergh
Florida Tax Review
Many countries need to stimulate savings, and especially voluntary pension planning, to meet the demands of an ageing population. This is especially true for the female population as women are expected to live longer while simultaneously having accumulated lower pension wealth. Sweden has been a front-runner in introducing tax-deferred designated pension accounts to stimulate private pension saving, along with self-directed individual public pension accounts. However, a particular feature of these tax-deferred designated pension accounts was that savings were taxed through a presumptive return. In this Article, we show that with heterogeneous risk preferences, this tax policy makes designated pensions unattractive …

Weather In Middle-Earth Or Tolkien: The Weather-Master?, Jonas Mertens
Journal of Tolkien Research
Abstract
This article attempts to shed light on the use of weather in general and meteorological expressions in The Lord of the Rings, as J. R. R. Tolkien is well known to be a writer for whom the environment and natural world is closely intertwined with his storytelling. Both a manual count and a count which a digital text analysis tool were combined to find the frequency of previously selected weather terms. In total, more than 2,000 references were found in the books, with the words ‘sun’, ‘wind’ and ‘cold’ being the most abundant. Meteorological expressions are frequently encountered in …

Faculty Research 2023
BACKGROUND: Characterizing and quantifying cell types within glioblastoma (GBM) tumors at scale will facilitate a better understanding of the association between the cellular landscape and tumor phenotypes or clinical correlates. We aimed to develop a tool that deconvolutes immune and neoplastic cells within the GBM tumor microenvironment from bulk RNA sequencing data.
METHODS: We developed an IDH wild-type (IDHwt) GBM-specific single immune cell reference consisting of B cells, T-cells, NK-cells, microglia, tumor associated macrophages, monocytes, mast and DC cells. We used this alongside an existing neoplastic single cell-type reference for astrocyte-like, oligodendrocyte- and neuronal progenitor-like and mesenchymal GBM cancer cells …
Probing Heavy Majorana Neutrinos And The Weinberg Operator Through Vector Boson Fusion Processes In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, A. Tumasyan
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
The first search exploiting the vector boson fusion process to probe heavy Majorana neutrinos and the Weinberg operator at the LHC is presented. The search is performed in the same-sign dimuon final state using a proton-proton collision dataset recorded at √s = 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The results are found to agree with the predictions of the standard model. For heavy Majorana neutrinos, constraints on the squared mixing element between the muon and the heavy neutrino are derived in the heavy neutrino mass range 50 …

Current interest in spacecraft constellations for government and commercial uses continues to drive advancement in sophistication, capability, and mission complexity. As these systems proliferate, they require increased levels of automation to properly orchestrate in achieving the mission objectives. This paper develops a constellation planning capability for cross-link enabled Geospatial Intelligence missions. The planning for constellation coordination is performed using a two-level network flow approach, where the first level creates a communication plan, and the second layer determines the Earth sensing activities. A network flow method is used to simultaneously obtain a schedule for each unique satellite within the constellation and …

Unveiling Ai Aversion: Understanding Antecedents And Task Complexity Effects, Md Jabir Rahman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has generated significant interest due to its potential to augment human intelligence. However, user attitudes towards AI are diverse, with some individuals embracing it enthusiastically while others harbor concerns and actively avoid its use. This two essays' dissertation explores the reasons behind user aversion to AI. In the first essay, I develop a concise research model to explain users' AI aversion based on the theory of effective use and the adaptive structuration theory. I then employ an online experiment to test my hypotheses empirically. The multigroup analysis by Structural Equation Modeling shows that users' perceptions of human …

Time-Dependent Water Wave Scattering By A Marine Structure Consisting Of An Array Of Compound Porous Cylinders, Sn Bora, S Das, Mh Meylan, S Saha, S Zheng
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Under the assumption of linear wave theory, a semi-analytical model is developed to address the time-dependent water wave scattering problem involving a marine structure consisting of several circular rigid vertical cylinders, each of which is surrounded by a thin cylindrical porous wall with a water region between the inner cylinder and the wall. The problem is tackled by applying the eigenfunction expansion approach. The energy dissipation relation is also derived for the system of compound cylinders. The principal focus of this work lies in locating the optimum geometrical configurations for which the wave forces acting on the structure are minimal …

Climate Change And Farmer Mental Health: A Participatory And Systems-Based Approach, Christopher Weatherly
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Because of their closeness to and dependence on the land, climate change will disproportionately impact farmer mental health. Despite local and global reliance on U.S. Midwest farmers' mental health and wellbeing, there are limited studies elucidating the impacts of our changing climate on their mental health. The proposed dissertation addresses this gap by leveraging qualitative data from community stakeholders and applying a systems perspective in two phases to address the research question: How does climate change impact farmer mental health? The study takes place in farming communities in rural southeastern Iowa, which have experienced demonstrated increases in daily average temperature, …

Exploring The Impact Of Eddies On Southern Ocean Biogeochemical Structure Using Bgc-Argo Float Observations, Nicola J. Guisewhite
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Southern Ocean plays a crucial role in global ocean circulation, and global heat and nutrient transport. However, this region is both distant and dangerous and is therefore largely under-sampled and understudied. Methods to fill in biogeochemical data-gaps include using limited in-situ data in models to output biogeochemical property estimates, but a number of recent studies have raised concerns about how most Southern Ocean models do not resolve eddies. Eddies are known to impact biogeochemistry around the globe but little is known about their impact in the Southern Ocean. This study examines temperature, salinity, oxygen, nitrate, and dissolved inorganic carbon …
Interactive Effects Of The Partial Pressure Of Co2, Temperature, And Nutrient-Limitation On The Physiology And Growth Of The Coccolithophore E. Huxleyi Grown On A 12:12 L:D Cycle Of Illumination, James Bradley
LSU Master's Theses
I studied the interactive effects of pCO2, temperature, and nutrient limitation on the growth and physiology of the marine coccolithophore, Emiliania huxleyi. This was done to look at the effect of climate change factors on the widespread and abundant calcifying marine organism as a predictor of what the future has to hold. The strain of E. huxleyi (PnB 272 B10) was grown on a 12:12 L:D cycle of illumination and exposed to either high or low pCO2 under nutrient-replete or nitrate-limited conditions across a temperature range of 10–28C. I examined the direct and interactive effects of temperature, pCO2, and nutrient …

Application Of A Diatomic Molecule Model Potential To A Series Of Homo- And Heterodiatomic Molecules, Dorien E. Carpenter, Javier E. Hasbun
Georgia Journal of Science
We apply a one-dimensional classical model of a diatomic molecule model potential with modifications to H2, HF, LiF, N2, and CO. We obtain the unknown parameters of this model by digitizing plots of the potential curves for the molecules from a published, Hartree-Fock based theoretical electron correlation calculation (Piris 2017). We then apply the method of successive approximations to the model in order to calculate the wavenumber for each molecule in the series. The wavenumber depends on a parameter which in turn depends on the initial conditions. The value of this parameter for each individual molecule …

Not All Doctoral Journeys Are Paved With Gold, Derek E. Fialkiewicz
Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education
This article is a reflection on the journey through the process of my doctoral studies. Published dissertations or research articles are very neat and tidy with no mention of any adversity or struggle. Hence why many doctoral students feel stressed, anxiety, or like quitting when obstacles or roadblocks are encountered. My doctoral program took much longer than anticipated, and my resulting dissertation veered far from my original proposal. What began as a mixed-methods study with a possible 1,400 surveys and 20 interview participants was morphed into a qualitative case study with one participant. There were many contributing factors, most uncontrollable …

Outdoor advertising has dominated the visual landscape of cities around the world. Outdoor advertising in city streets and public places are different than the ones located in other places for many reasons. First, it is directed towards particular audience who has no option but to look at it. The research problem lies in the excessive use of images in ways that may have been randomly put without taking into consideration certain factors such as allocation, processing, design construction or some expressive and psychological aspects. Experts have defined some technical problems related to image-choice and the extent of its future impact …
