Covid Learning Loss: A Call To Action, Nathan D. Grawe Jul 2023

Covid Learning Loss: A Call To Action, Nathan D. Grawe

Numeracy

The COVID-19 pandemic and policy responses designed to mitigate transmission have caused deep and persistent mathematics learning loss among K–12 students. While initial data might have been read optimistically as a blip that would reverse once schools returned to normal, 2023 data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) show that losses persist. While the NAEP does not directly measure quantitative reasoning (QR), the data present a disturbing picture for QR instruction and call for new lines of research that inform QR pedagogical response.

Fostering Human Dimension Of Smart Cities: Lessons From Jakarta For Nusantara, Indonesia’S New Capital City In The Making, Wicaksono Sarosa, Nurulitha Andini Susetyo, Marsa Nur Aulianisa, Mahbub Ridhoo Maulaa, Pradamas Giffary

Smart City

A city’s problems often arise as the population grows and urbanization happens. This process is linear to the development of information-and-communication technologies (ICT), especially in urban areas. As a result, cities have adopted an initiative to solve the problems which are popularly known as the smart city. Over decades, the idea of a smart city has evolved from a mere technological modernization to advanced utilization through community involvement. However, in practice, smart city ideas and initiatives often put a heavy emphasis on technical aspects and ignored the more human side, which has caused a digital divide. This paper argues that …

Cytochrome P450 Gene Families: Role In Plant Secondary Metabolites Production And Plant Defense, Panchali Chakraborty, Ashok Biswas, Susmita Dey, Tuli Bhattacharjee, Swapan Chakrabarty Jul 2023

Cytochrome P450 Gene Families: Role In Plant Secondary Metabolites Production And Plant Defense, Panchali Chakraborty, Ashok Biswas, Susmita Dey, Tuli Bhattacharjee, Swapan Chakrabarty

Michigan Tech Publications

Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) are the most prominent family of enzymes involved in NADPH- and O2-dependent hydroxylation processes throughout all spheres of life. CYPs are crucial for the detoxification of xenobiotics in plants, insects, and other organisms. In addition to performing this function, CYPs serve as flexible catalysts and are essential for producing secondary metabolites, antioxidants, and phytohormones in higher plants. Numerous biotic and abiotic stresses frequently affect the growth and development of plants. They cause a dramatic decrease in crop yield and a deterioration in crop quality. Plants protect themselves against these stresses through different mechanisms, which are accomplished by …

C···O And Si···O Tetrel Bonds: Substituent Effects And Transfer Of The Sif3 Group, Zhihao Niu, Qiaozhuo Wu, Qingzhong Li, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The tetrel bond (TB) between 1,2-benzisothiazol-3-one-2-TF3-1,1-dioxide (T = C, Si) and the O atom of pyridine-1-oxide (PO) and its derivatives (PO-X, X = H, NO2, CN, F, CH3, OH, OCH3, NH2, and Li) is examined by quantum chemical means. The Si···O TB is quite strong, with interaction energies approaching a maximum of nearly 70 kcal/mol, while the C···O TB is an order of magnitude weaker, with interaction energies between 2.0 and 2.6 kcal/mol. An electron-withdrawing substituent on the Lewis base weakens this TB, while an electron-donating group has the opposite …

Thieno[3,4-D]Pyrimidin-4(3h)-Thione: An Effective, Oxygenation Independent, Heavy-Atom-Free Photosensitizer For Cancer Cells, Luis A. Ortiz-Rodríguez, Sean J. Hoehn, Heather J. Folkwein, Liraz Levi, Carlos E. Crespo-Hernández

Faculty Scholarship

All-organic, heavy-atom-free photosensitizers based on thionation of nucleobases are receiving increased attention because they are easy to make, noncytotoxic, work both in the presence and absence of molecular oxygen, and can be readily incorporated into DNA and RNA. In this contribution, the DNA and RNA fluorescent probe, thieno[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4(1H)-one, has been thionated to develop thieno[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-thione, which is nonfluorescent and absorbs near-visible radiation with about 60% higher efficiency. Steady-state absorption and emission spectra are combined with transient absorption spectroscopy and CASPT2 calculations to delineate the electronic relaxation mechanisms of both pyrimidine derivatives in aqueous and acetonitrile solutions. It is demonstrated that thieno[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-thione …

Propagation Of Hydraulic Fractures In Thin Interbedded Tight Sandstones, Yang Fan, Mei Wenbo, Li Liang, Sun Zening, An Qi, Yang Qi, Lu Meiquan, Yang Ruiyue Jul 2023

Propagation Of Hydraulic Fractures In Thin Interbedded Tight Sandstones, Yang Fan, Mei Wenbo, Li Liang, Sun Zening, An Qi, Yang Qi, Lu Meiquan, Yang Ruiyue

Coal Geology & Exploration

Thin interbedded tight sandstone reservoirs are characterized by strong vertical heterogeneity due to the superimposed pattern of the deposited sandstones and mudstones. As a result, hydraulic fractures are difficult to propagate vertically to effectively connect the reservoirs. Given this, ascertaining the vertical propagation patterns of hydraulic fractures in thin interbeds is of great significance for the development of thin interbedded tight sandstones. With the thin interbedded tight sandstone reservoirs of the lower Shihezi Formation in the Linxing block, Ordos Basin as a case study, this study built the fracture propagation model of these sandstones. Accordingly, it analyzed the effects of …

Iron Occurrence In Coal Measures And Its Release Mechanism During Water-Rock Interactions: Taking A Mine In The Eastern Grassland As An Example, Wang Tiantian Jul 2023

Iron Occurrence In Coal Measures And Its Release Mechanism During Water-Rock Interactions: Taking A Mine In The Eastern Grassland As An Example, Wang Tiantian

Coal Geology & Exploration

The mine water with iron out of limit corrodes the water distribution pipeline and the industrial equipment, thereby damaging the liver of human body, and further threatening the human health. The enrichment or dilution of iron in mine water is determined by the iron content and its occurrence in coal measures, as well as its release mechanism during water-coal and water-rock interactions. Herein, 18 groups of coal and rock samples were collected from a mine in the eastern grassland, and had the iron content, occurrence and carrier in the coal measure analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), …

Here Comes The Strain: Analyzing Defensive Pass Rush In American Football With Player Tracking Data, Quang Nguyen, Ronald Yurko, Gregory J. Matthews Jul 2023

Here Comes The Strain: Analyzing Defensive Pass Rush In American Football With Player Tracking Data, Quang Nguyen, Ronald Yurko, Gregory J. Matthews

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In American football, a pass rush is an attempt by the defensive team to disrupt the offense and prevent the quarterback (QB) from completing a pass. Existing metrics for assessing pass rush performance are either discrete-time quantities or based on subjective judgment. Using player tracking data, we propose STRAIN, a novel metric for evaluating pass rushers in the National Football League (NFL) at the continuous-time within-play level. Inspired by the concept of strain rate in materials science, STRAIN is a simple and interpretable means for measuring defensive pressure in football. It is a directly-observed statistic as a function of two …

Cambrian Explosion Condensed: High-Precision Geochronology Of The Lower Wood Canyon Formation, Nevada, Lyle L. Nelson, James L. Crowley, Emily F. Smith, Darin M. Schwartz, Eben B. Hodgin, Mark D. Schmitz

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The geologically rapid appearance of fossils of modern animal phyla within Cambrian strata is a defining characteristic of the history of life on Earth. However, temporal calibration of the base of the Cambrian Period remains uncertain within millions of years, which has resulted in mounting challenges to the concept of a discrete Cambrian explosion. We present precise zircon U–Pb dates for the lower Wood Canyon Formation, Nevada. These data demonstrate the base of the Cambrian Period, as defined by both ichnofossil biostratigraphy and carbon isotope chemostratigraphy, was younger than 533 Mya, at least 6 My later than currently recognized. This …
