A Hybrid Lateral Flow Sand Filter Wastewater Treatment System: An Evaluation On The Treatment And Disposal Capabilities Of A Modified Sand Filter, Harry Mccaskill Iv Aug 2023

A Hybrid Lateral Flow Sand Filter Wastewater Treatment System: An Evaluation On The Treatment And Disposal Capabilities Of A Modified Sand Filter, Harry Mccaskill Iv

Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)

Decentralized wastewater treatment exists primarily in suburban and rural areas where centralized treatment is not an option. Traditional on-site treatment systems usually include the use of a septic tank and a drain field. This orthodox method works well when implemented into environments that are accommodating for the infiltration of effluents, and thus allowing for soil treatment. Unfortunately, there are some circumstances that prevent traditional systems from working such as impermeable soil conditions. The Wastewater Treatment System analyzed in this thesis was created to overcome such inhospitable environments. More specifically, this system is catered towards the rural residences of The Alabama …

Epileptic Seizure Classification Using Image-Based Data Representation, Amber Surles Aug 2023

Epileptic Seizure Classification Using Image-Based Data Representation, Amber Surles

Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)

Epilepsy is a recurrence of seizures caused by a disorder of the brain in over 3.4 million people nationwide. Some people are able to predict their seizures based off prodrome, which is an early sign or symptom that usually resembles mood changes or a euphoric feeling even days to an hour before occurrence. Consequently, the natural instincts of the body to react to an upcoming attack lends credence to the existence of a pre-ictal state that precedes seizure episodes. Physicians and researchers have thus sought for an automated approach for predicting or detecting seizures.

In this research, we evaluate the …

Algorithms For Computing Invariants Of Trisected Branched Covers, Patricia Cahn, Gordana Matic, Benjamin Ruppik

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

We give diagrammatic algorithms for computing the group trisection, homology groups, and intersection form of a closed, orientable, smooth 4-manifold, presented as a branched cover of a bridge-trisected surface in 4. The algorithm takes as input a tri-plane diagram, labelled with permutations according to the Wirtinger relations. We apply our algorithm to several examples, including dihedral and cyclic covers of spun knots, cyclic covers of Suciu's ribbon knots with the trefoil knot group, and an infinite family of irregular covers of the Stevedore disk double. As an application, we give a fully automated algorithm for computing Kjuchukova's homotopy-ribbon obstruction for …

Application Of An Adaptive Controller On An Air-Bearing Vehicle-Manipulator System, Samuel Thomas Lovelace Aug 2023

Application Of An Adaptive Controller On An Air-Bearing Vehicle-Manipulator System, Samuel Thomas Lovelace

Theses and Dissertations

The growing demand for on-orbit servicing and assembly as well as orbital debris capture and removal poses many engineering challenges. One primary challenge is that of position and attitude control of a spacecraft-manipulator system while performing these operations. Standard control approaches may be used for cases where the dynamics of the objects that the spacecraft-manipulator system interacts with are known are still plausible. However, there will likely be some uncertainty and lack of knowledge of the dynamic properties of orbital debris and parts required for servicing. Therefore, many have proposed the use of adaptive control schemes which can recalculate the …

Aims. We take advantage of the NIRCam photometric observations available as part of the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science survey (CEERS) to identify and analyse very red sources in an effort to discover very dusty star forming galaxies. Methods. We select red galaxies as objects with a S / N > 3 at 4.4 μm and a S / N < 2 in all JWST and HST filters at λ ≤ 2 μm, which corresponds to [ F 200 W ]−[ F 444 W ]> 1.2 considering CEERS depths. This selection is ideal to identify very dusty ( A V > 1 mag) galaxies with stellar masses between 10 6 and 10 10 M ⊙ at z < 5, more massive dusty galaxies at z = 5 − 18 and galaxies at z > 18 due to the Lyman absorption, independently of their dust …

We present a combined density functional theory (DFT) and experimental work on lithium tantalate LiTaO3 (LT) and its Er-doped counterparts. We calculate the electronic and optical properties for both LT and LT:Er+3, with Er occupying either Li or Ta sites, at 4.167 mol%. The generalized gradient approximation (GGA) calculations show that the Er-4 f bands appear closer to the conduction band bottom and to the valance band top, for the first and second doped configurations, respectively. This agrees with changes in the imaginary part of the frequency dependent dielectric function between the doped configurations. There are striking differences between the …

Mechanical And Contact Characteristics Of Foam Materials Within Wound Dressings: Theoretical And Practical Considerations In Treatment, Amit Gefen, Paulo Alves, Dimitri Beeckman, José Luis Lázaro-Martínez, Hadar Lev-Tov, Bijan Najafi, Terry Swanson, Kevin Woo

Center on Aging Staff Publications

In the treatment of acute and chronic wounds, the clinical performance of a given foam‐based dressing, and, ultimately, the wound healing and cost of care outcomes are strongly influenced by the mechanical performance of the foam material/s within that dressing. Most aspects of the mechanical performance of foam materials, for example, their stiffness, frictional properties, conformability, swelling characteristics and durability, and the overall mechanical protection provided by a foam‐based dressing to a wound strongly depend on the microstructure of the foam components, particularly on their microtopography, density and porosity. This article, therefore, provides, for the first time, a comprehensive, self‐inclusive …

Real-World Image Restoration Using Degradation Adaptive Transformer-Based Adversarial Network, Lujun Zhai Aug 2023

Real-World Image Restoration Using Degradation Adaptive Transformer-Based Adversarial Network, Lujun Zhai

All Dissertations

Most existing learning-based image restoration methods heavily rely on paired degraded/non-degraded training datasets that are based on simplistic handcrafted degradation assumptions. These assumptions often involve a limited set of degradations, such as Gaussian blurs, noises, and bicubic downsampling. However, when these methods are applied to real-world images, there is a significant decrease in performance due to the discrepancy between synthetic and realistic degradation. Additionally, they lack the flexibility to adapt to unknown degradations in practical scenarios, which limits their generalizability to complex and unconstrained scenes.

To address the absence of image pairs, recent studies have proposed Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based …

Advances In One-Electron Self-Interaction-Correction Methods For Accurate And Efficient Self-Interaction-Free Density Functional Calculations, Selim Romero Aug 2023

Advances In One-Electron Self-Interaction-Correction Methods For Accurate And Efficient Self-Interaction-Free Density Functional Calculations, Selim Romero

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Density functional theory (DFT) is a widely used computational method for studying electronic structures of atoms, molecules, and solids. It provides an exact theory for obtaining ground state energy from the ground state density. However, since the exact exchange-correlation functional remains unknown, approximate exchange-correlation functionals called approximate density approximations (DFAs) are used. The foundation of many DFAs is the local spin density approximation (LSDA). It serves as the starting point for constructing various DFAs. However, DFAs are prone to self-interaction errors (SIE) due to the improper cancellation of the approximate exchange energy and the Coulomb energy. This issue impacts the …
