Ensuring Quality In Qualitative Research: A Researcher's Reflections, Niroj Dahal

The Qualitative Report

This reflective paper is the outcome of my qualitative research engagement aligned with quality standards. I began with autoethnography in my master's research in mathematics education (see Dahal, 2013), then moved on to narrative inquiry in my MPhil research (see Dahal, 2017), and collaborative autoethnography in my doctoral research (see Dahal, 2023). With the above, this paper aims to clarify the quality criteria used in autoethnography, narrative inquiry, and collaborative autoethnography based on my experiences to evaluate the robustness of qualitative research from various ontological and epistemological vantage points. Likewise, this article offers a comprehensive overview of the key elements …

Mutation-Induced Changes In The Stability, B-Cell Epitope, And Antigenicity Of The Sars-Cov-2 Variant Spike Protein: A Comparative Computational Stud, Nira Meirita Wijayanti, Muhammad Hermawan Widyananda, Lailil Muflikhah, Nashi Widodo

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The spike (S) protein is a major antigenicity site that targets neutralizing antibodies and drugs. The growing number of S protein mutations has become a severe problem for developing effective vaccines. Here, we investigated four severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants that were the most infectious and widespread during the COVID-19 pandemic to determine the trends and patterns of mutation-induced changes in the stability, B-cell epitope, and antigenicity of the SARS-CoV-2 S protein. The data showed that the Beta and Gamma variants had three mutations on the receptor-binding domain (RBD), which is the specific site on the S …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Having entered into its second century, the eradication program for bovine tuberculosis (bTB, caused by Mycobacterium bovis) in the United States of America occupies a position both enviable and daunting. Excepting four counties in Michigan comprising only 6109 km2 (0.06% of US land area) classified as Modified Accredited, as of April 2022 the entire country was considered Accredited Free of bTB by the US Department of Agriculture for cattle and bison. On the surface, the now well-described circumstances of endemic bTB in Michigan, where white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) serve as a free-ranging wildlife maintenance host, may appear to be …

The Quantum Mechanical Background Of Quantum Computing, Isaac Hanna Aug 2023

The Quantum Mechanical Background Of Quantum Computing, Isaac Hanna

The Kabod

Quantum mechanics arose out of the question "Is light a particle or a wave?" and has laid forth a model of reality in which particles are modeled by wave functions. The particle is in a superposition of states and can be entangled with other particles to create more complex systems. Observation of the system collapses the wave function to a single point. By using quantum gates, we can manipulate these particles to create algorithms to solve computational problems. Quantum computing does not collapse the complexity hierarchy by providing an across the board exponential speedup but can provide such a speedup …

Engagement In Secondary Mathematics Group Work: A Student Perspective, Rachel H. Jorgenson Aug 2023

Engagement In Secondary Mathematics Group Work: A Student Perspective, Rachel H. Jorgenson

Theses and Dissertations

In the realm of academic engagement research, students are valuable sources of information to learn how and why students often engage unproductively in mathematics group work. However, although secondary mathematics students are often expected to engage in meaningful mathematical discourse in a small group setting, little research has been conducted to better understand student engagement in this setting from the perspective of the students themselves. This thesis attempts to understand how one junior high student described his own engagement in mathematics small group work as well as what factors influenced this engagement. By conducting several cycles of observations and interviews …

Asset: Auto-Segmentation Of The Seventeen Segments For Ventricular Tachycardia Ablation In Radiation Therapy, Eric Morris, Robert Chin, Trudy Wu, Clayton Smith, Siamak Nejad-Davarani, Minsong Cao

2020-Current year OA Pubs

There has been a recent effort to treat high-risk ventricular tachycardia (VT) patients through radio-ablation. However, manual segmentation of the VT target is complex and time-consuming. This work introduces ASSET, or Auto-segmentation of the Seventeen SEgments for Tachycardia ablation, to aid in radiation therapy (RT) planning. ASSET was retrospectively applied to CTs for 26 thoracic RT patients (13 undergoing VT ablation). The physician-defined parasternal long-axis of the left ventricle (LV) and the axes generated from principal component analysis (PCA) were compared using mean distance to agreement (MDA) and angle of separation. The manually selected right ventricle insertion point and LVs …

The Generalizability Of Proposed Theoretical Factor Models For Common Assessments For Specific Learning Disability In Reading Using A Community Sample, Sean B. Vanhille Aug 2023

The Generalizability Of Proposed Theoretical Factor Models For Common Assessments For Specific Learning Disability In Reading Using A Community Sample, Sean B. Vanhille

Theses and Dissertations

Specific learning disabilities (SLD) are among the most diagnosed developmental disorders in children, with specific learning disability in reading (SLDR) as the most common. SLDR typically occurs due to deficits in phonological processing that can negatively impact decoding and/or reading comprehension skills. Reading deficits are often diagnosed using formal assessments such as the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP-2), the Gray Oral Reading Test (GORT-5), the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V), and the Woodcock Johnson Achievement Battery (WJ-IV-A). I did not find any research in which the theoretical factor models proposed in the technical manuals of these assessments were …

Nmda Receptor Inhibition On Rodent Optimal Decision-Making In The Diminishing Returns Task, Seth Foust

Research Psychology Theses

There has been growing interest in using N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists as treatments for mood disorders, but there is still much to learn about their cognitive effects. Research shows NMDA receptors can affect decision-making, and the antagonist MK-801 has had varying effects in rodents. Specifically, some have reported impairments in working memory while foraging behaviors remained intact, while others have demonstrated changes in choice behavior related to delay or risk in behavior tasks. We investigated the role of NMDA receptors in the specific paradigm of optimal decision-making to further confirm MK-801’s effects and to explore whether inhibiting NMDA receptors alters …

Parents' Perceptions Of The Importance Of Teaching Mathematics: A Q-Study, Ashlynn M. Holley

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematics education has gone through multiple reform efforts over the last century and continues to be the target of improvement efforts. Past changes in curriculum and goals have sometimes led to heated debates between various stakeholders. Knowing the views of different stakeholders can help determine what common ground there is between these different groups and where areas of disagreement might arise. Parents are especially important to understand because they have been influential in past reform efforts. Despite the importance of parents' opinions, little research has been conducted concerning their perspectives on the importance of mathematics teaching. Using Q-methodology, I was …

Review Article: Effect Of Co-Expression Chaperones On The Expression Of Intracellular Recombinant Proteins In Escherichia Coli, Diandra Firdiani Utami, Mamlikatu Ilmi Azizah, Sriwidodo Sriwidodo, Ryan Adibagus Haryanto, Riyona Desvy Pratiwi, Iman Permana Maksum

Chimica et Natura Acta

Escherichia coli is widely used as a host for expressing recombinant proteins due to its well-studied genetics, fast growth, relatively low production costs, and high rate of protein expression. However, despite the high rate of protein expression, the availability of chaperone proteins was often insufficient, resulting in the formation of inclusion bodies due to errors in protein folding. These inclusion bodies can cause the protein to become inactive, and proper protein folding is crucial for maintaining the structure and function of proteins in living organisms. To overcome this limitation, chaperones have been developed as a strategy to help prevent protein …

Daunting Encounters: La Hague’S Infrastructures Of Secrecy, Agnes Villette

Secrecy and Society

The article explores secrecy, more particularly, nuclear secrecy in relation to two nuclear facilities situated at the tip of the Norman peninsula of La Hague, in France. Both sites - the CSM nuclear waste repository and the close-by refueling plant - were developed at the end of the 1960s in connection with France’s extensive civil and military nuclear program. While institutional archives and access to the sites remain tedious, the article contends that the nuclear secrecy shielding the facilities can be approached by unpacking the numerous accidents that took place at the site. Silenced and subjected to amnesia, spills and …

Simple Scheduling Algorithm For Growing Constellations, Lauren Fitzgibbon, Chris Shaffer Aug 2023

Simple Scheduling Algorithm For Growing Constellations, Lauren Fitzgibbon, Chris Shaffer

Small Satellite Conference

As the number of satellites in orbit grows, satellite constellation operators must consider better ways to balance the usage of ground assets. In general, ground asset availability does not grow linearly with the number of satellites launched, so alternative approaches to divide usage amongst a limited number of ground assets are required. While advanced techniques exist to manage these factors, they are often not practical for small and growing constellation managers.

The authors have developed a computationally simple method for dividing available antenna time between satellites, considering available access windows. This was designed to adapt to any number of heterogenous …

Educational And Real-World Satellite Mission Operations Center At The Us Naval Academy, Noah Loftis, Ethan Schneider, Christine Maceo, Jin S. Kang, Michael Sanders

Small Satellite Conference

For successful satellite missions at the United States Naval Academy (USNA), a critical element is the
/="/">establishment of a capable and dynamic Satellite Mission Operations Center (SOC). In addition to powerful hardware, flexibility and adaptability allow the SOC to continue to support operations, even as new protocols arise and communication architectures change with the rapid pace of small satellite advancement. Software-defined radios (SDRs) provide the necessary flexibility for the SOC to easily change configurations and network with other ground stations. However, the resulting high-tech, turn-key operations of an advanced SOC tend to alienate students from hands-on learning experiences. The …

Physics-Guided Modeling Of Acoustic Environments Using Limited Spatio-Spectro-Temporal Data, Mylan Ray Cook Aug 2023

Physics-Guided Modeling Of Acoustic Environments Using Limited Spatio-Spectro-Temporal Data, Mylan Ray Cook

Theses and Dissertations

When creating data-based models it is important to include the underlying physical characteristics and constraints of the data. If physical characteristics are not properly included in the model, results may be infeasible or physically impossible. Acoustic environments are better characterized by ensuring that models include the fundamental spatial, spectral, and temporal characteristics of noise sources, or how they change based on location, frequency, and time. When model data are limited, in availability or in reliability, additional care must be taken to ensure models predict feasible results. This dissertation focuses on physics-guided modeling of acoustic environments using limited data, taking into …
