Fire Effects On Soil Organic Matter In The Creek Fire, Gracie E. Doolin Sep 2023

Fire Effects On Soil Organic Matter In The Creek Fire, Gracie E. Doolin

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

Wildfires have increased in frequency and severity over the past few decades due to the increased concertation of CO2 emissions from anthropogenic influence. Soil carbon (C) sequestration has been identified as a climate change mitigation strategy; however, the influx of large-scale wildfires has accelerated landscape processes such as erosion, reducing soil aggradation, and soil C and nitrogen (N) protection. This trend is highlighted by the Creek Fire that occurred in September 2020 and burned 379,895 acres in the Sierra National Forest. This research is designed to close the knowledge gap regarding the impact of burn severity on soil organic matter …

Northeastern Illinois University and its Department of Biology have been working to center diversity and amplify the voices of underrepresented scholars. To help with this, we (the editors) developed an assignment where undergraduate and graduate students identified underrepresented scientists and researched their personal story and their contributions to science. This assignment culminated in a final paper based on the students’ research. In the Spring of 2023, this assignment was instituted in our Senior Seminar and Biological Literature courses for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, respectively. From the completed assignments ten were chosen for inclusion in this publication. These ten scientists …

Linear Regression Under Partial Information, Tho M. Nguyen, Saeid Tizpaz-Niari, Vladik Kreinovich Sep 2023

Linear Regression Under Partial Information, Tho M. Nguyen, Saeid Tizpaz-Niari, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Often, we need to know how to estimate the value of a difficult-to-directly estimate quantity y -- e.g., tomorrow's temperature -- based on the known values of several quantities x1, ..., xn. In many practical situations, we know that the relation between y and xi can be accurately described by a linear function. So, to find this dependence, we need to estimate the coefficients of this linear dependence based on the known cases in which we know both y and xi; this is known as linear regression. In the ideal situation, when in each case, we know all the inputs …

Synthetic Image Generation And The Use Of Virtual Environments For Image Enhancement Tasks, Neil Patrick Del Gallego Sep 2023

Synthetic Image Generation And The Use Of Virtual Environments For Image Enhancement Tasks, Neil Patrick Del Gallego

Software Technology Dissertations

Deep learning networks are often difficult to train if there are insufficient image samples. Gathering real-world images tailored for a specific job takes a lot of work to perform. This dissertation explores techniques for synthetic image generation and virtual environments for various image enhancement/ correction/restoration tasks, specifically distortion correction, dehazing, shadow removal, and intrinsic image decomposition. First, given various image formation equations, such as those used in distortion correction and dehazing, synthetic image samples can be produced, provided that the equation is well-posed. Second, using virtual environments to train various image models is applicable for simulating real-world effects that are …

Nonlinear Analysis Of Pile Raft Foundations Under Eccentric Loads, Khalid Qasim Hussein, Dr. Rafi’ M. Sulaiman Al-Ne’Aimi Sep 2023

Nonlinear Analysis Of Pile Raft Foundations Under Eccentric Loads, Khalid Qasim Hussein, Dr. Rafi’ M. Sulaiman Al-Ne’Aimi

Polytechnic Journal

This paper discusses a series of 3D nonlinear analyses of the pile group foundation of a 34-floor multi-story building subjected to vertical load and large moments using PLAXIS 3D v20 software. The soil profile consists of seven strata of various properties, with groundwater encountered at 19.6 m below the ground surface. The soil is modeled as hardening soil material in drained conditions. The piles in the pile group foundation are modeled as embedded pile elements. Several parameters were investigated through a rigorous parametric study, such as the pile spacing-diameter ratio (s/dpile), the number of piles, and the pile slenderness ratio …

Identifying The Stream Depletion Paradox By Monitoring A Stream’S Response To Aquifer Pumping From Neighboring Wells, James Klueber Sep 2023

Identifying The Stream Depletion Paradox By Monitoring A Stream’S Response To Aquifer Pumping From Neighboring Wells, James Klueber

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

Current groundwater models utilize a constant head (Dirichlet) boundary condition which assumes stream stage is fixed and does not experience any drawdown in the event of pumping from an interconnected aquifer despite the presence of stream depletion. Therefore, constant head boundary implies that streams and lakes in a groundwater model behave as an infinite supply of water when aquifer pumping occurs. This study aimed to determine if a stream located in the California Central Coast experiences drawdown and depletion when pumping occurs within an aquifer-stream system. This was achieved by measuring stream stage, aquifer water levels, stream discharge, and the …

Thinking Beyond Chatbots’ Threat To Education: Visualizations To Elucidate The Writing Or Coding Process, Badri Adhikari Sep 2023

Thinking Beyond Chatbots’ Threat To Education: Visualizations To Elucidate The Writing Or Coding Process, Badri Adhikari

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, educational practices continue to be predominantly centered around outcome-oriented approaches. These practices are now thoroughly disrupted by the recent accessibility of online resources and chatbots. Among the most affected subjects are writing and computer programming. As educators transform their teaching practices to account for this disruption, it is important to note that writing and computer programming play a critical role in the development of logical and computational thinking. For instance, what and how we write shapes our thinking and sets us on the path of self-directed learning. Likewise, computer programming plays a similar role …

TOI-1899 b is a rare exoplanet, a temperate warm Jupiter orbiting an M dwarf, first discovered by Cañas et al. (2020) from a TESS single-transit event. Using new radial velocities (RVs) from the precision RV spectrographs HPF and NEID, along with additional TESS photometry and ground-based transit follow-up, we are able to derive a much more precise orbital period of P = 29.090312 (+0.000036)/(-0.000035) days, along with a radius of Rp = 0.99 ± 0.03 Rj. We have also improved the constraints on planet mass, Mp = 0.67 ± 0.04 Mj, and eccentricity, which …

Differences In Clinical Presentation At First Hospitalization And The Impact On Involuntary Admissions Among First-Generation Migrant Groups With Non-Affective Psychotic Disorders., Kelly K Anderson, Rebecca Rodrigues

Epidemiology and Biostatistics Publications

BACKGROUND: Some migrant and ethnic minority groups have a higher risk of coercive pathways to care; however, it is unclear whether differences in clinical presentation contribute to this risk. We sought to assess: (i) whether there were differences in clinician-rated symptoms and behaviours across first-generation immigrant and refugee groups at the first psychiatric hospitalization after psychosis diagnosis, and (ii) whether these differences accounted for disparities in involuntary admission.

METHODS: Using population-based health administrative data from Ontario, Canada, we constructed a sample (2009-2013) of incident cases of non-affective psychotic disorder followed for two years to identify first psychiatric hospitalization. We compared …
