Velocity-Based Training—A Critical Review, Stuart Guppy, Kristina Kendall, G. Gregory Haff

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Velocity-based training (VBT) is an increasingly popular programming strategy used by strength and conditioning professionals to develop their athlete's ability to express force rapidly. To implement the varying forms of VBT effectively within their training regimes, strength and conditioning professionals need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of strategies, such as predicting 1 repetition maximum using the load-velocity profile, modulating training loads using the load-velocity profile, and controlling training volume using the magnitude of velocity-loss. The aim of this review was to highlight these strengths and weaknesses and then provide practical examples of when each programming strategy may be most …

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are fast becoming the most common chronic liver disease and are often preventable with healthy dietary habits and weight management. Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is associated with obesity and NAFLD. However, the impact of different types of SSBs, including artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs), is not clear after controlling for total sugar intake and total caloric intake. The aim of this study was to examine the association between the consumption of different SSBs and the risk of NAFLD and NASH in US adults. The representativeness of 3739 US adults aged ≥20 years …

Measurement And Evaluation Of Deep Learning Based 3d Reconstruction, Md Kaisar Ahmed Sep 2023

Measurement And Evaluation Of Deep Learning Based 3d Reconstruction, Md Kaisar Ahmed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Performances of Deep Learning (DL) based methods for 3D reconstruction are becoming at par or better than classical computer vision techniques. Learning requires data with proper annotations. While images have a standardized representation, there is currently no widely accepted format for efficiently representing 3D output shapes. The challenge lies in finding a format that can handle the high-resolution geometry of any shape while also being memory and computationally efficient. Therefore, most advanced learning-based 3D reconstructions are restricted to a certain domain. In this work, we compare the performance of different output representations for 3D reconstruction in different contexts including objects …

Daily increases in electricity prices accompany daily increases in energy consumption and use. An effective load-balancing scheduling system is necessary for the lowest cost of use and the lowest cost. Despite these devices having a significant capacity for power consumption, they must find a means to balance the load at a low price. Even if lowering the voltage is challenging, it is possible to do it at the lowest cost. Hybrid Whale Differential Evolution (HWDE) is a new optimization method that combines the well-known approaches of the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and Enhanced Differential Evolution (EDE). By balancing the required …

Chlorinated Water As A Source Of Chlorate Contamination In Farm Bulk Milk, Lorna Twomey, Ambrose Furey, Bernadette O'Brien, David Gleeson Sep 2023

Chlorinated Water As A Source Of Chlorate Contamination In Farm Bulk Milk, Lorna Twomey, Ambrose Furey, Bernadette O'Brien, David Gleeson

Physical Sciences Publications

The potential for chlorinated water to cause chlorate contamination of milk was evaluated at both laboratory and field level. It was found that for such contamination to occur, direct contact of water and milk was necessary. To minimise the opportunity for chlorinated water to cause chlorate contamination of milk, it is vital to ensure that milk handling equipment is engineered to provide for proper drainage of water and that all necessary steps are taken to prevent the adulteration of milk with water.

Development Of Single-Crystalline And 3d-Printable Porous Organic Materials, Mingshi Zhang Sep 2023

Development Of Single-Crystalline And 3d-Printable Porous Organic Materials, Mingshi Zhang

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Porous organic materials with designable structures, large surface areas, low densities, and unique electronic and optical properties have found widespread applications in adsorption, separation, energy storage, and catalysis. However, the majority of organic porous materials are synthesized as fluffy powders, which poses two fundamental challenges for them. Firstly, they lack a single-crystal structure at the microscopic scale, making it difficult to study the specific pore size, shape, and potential substrate binding sites at the atomic level and further establish the structure-property relationship. Secondly, they lack the general processing method and macroscopic shape design, making it difficult to manufacture suitable components …

Acculturation Of Linguistics And Awareness Of It In The Light Of Heritage: A Study In The Efforts Of Dr. Adel Fakhoury, Khaled Khaleel Hadi

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The paper presents a reading for the linguistic efforts of Dr. Adel Fakhoury (1939-2017) in his books and researches that he worked on for almost forty years. Although he is a specialist in philosophy and mathematical logic, Fakhoury has important disregarded linguistic writings and researches. The researcher presents linguistic visions where philosophy, logic and linguistics merge altogether. It can be argued that these writings are at the core of language philosophy investigation which aims to approach language from a philosophical and logical point of view. The author attempted to trace most of the linguistic streams that approached language, especially those …

Internet Of Things Affordance For Open Educational Resources In A Comprehensive Open Distance E-Learning, Lancelord Mncube Sep 2023

Internet Of Things Affordance For Open Educational Resources In A Comprehensive Open Distance E-Learning, Lancelord Mncube

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

The Internet of Things (IoT) space has dual dimensions of affordance to support open educational resources (OER). The duality of affordance has little or not been well articulated in relation to OER, particularly in a Comprehensive open distance e-learning (CODEL) institution. Such an institution is a mega open distance in South Africa and beyond the continent to accommodate students globally and rely on information and communication technology (ICT) in the provision of tuition. In the CODEL institution, there is a recognizable shift as the institution encourages the appropriation of OER and phasing out the prescription of the prescribed textbooks. The …

Experiences Of African Women In Stem Careers: A Systematic Literature Review., Kaluwa Siwale, Gwamaka Mwalemba, Ulrike Rivett

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

The discourse on women's underrepresentation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) mainly centres on the global north, leaving a gap in understanding the perspectives of African women in STEM. To address this, a systematic literature review was conducted to explore African women's experiences in STEM careers and education. After applying inclusion and criteria, 18 published articles were analysed. 8 key issues emerge: work environment, education system, work-life balance, gender-based stereotypes, racial bias, sexual harassment, inadequate support/mentorship, and self-imposed limits. These themes intertwine, with some aspects influencing others. Grasping the complexities and interactions of these factors provides insights into challenges …

Adoption Of Ict To Support Rural Small-Holder Farmers : A Systematic Review, Abdus Salaam Seat, Shaun Pather

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

Access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are slowly becoming more available to rural communities given a number of innovative approaches over recent years such as the implementation of Community Networks (CNs). Consequently, ICTs are able to become more meaningful in support of livelihoods of these communities, such as in agriculture production. Potential benefits to smallholder farmers include increase yields and reduced effort. However, there is very little evidence of smallholder farmers integrating ICTs into their livelihood activity. In this paper a Systematic Literature Review is used to explore the challenges faced in this sector. A total of 83 articles …

An Assessment Of The Consistency Gap In Developing Countries: A Case Of Zimbabwe’S Ict Regulatory Framework, Casper Chigwedere

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

An effective Information and Communications Technology (ICT) regulatory system is expected to advance regulatory consistency, independence, pro-competitiveness, consistency, competency, and accountability. These qualities will inspire investor confidence, sectoral growth, and customer satisfaction. Since we considered regulatory independence elsewhere, this paper investigates the level of regulatory consistency in developing countries. This is done using data from Zimbabwe a developing country in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study employs a Qualitative methodology, and Heeks’ (2002) Design Reality Gap (DRG) model under an interpretivist paradigm. Data collection employed in-depth interviews with purposively selected stakeholders and the analysed using Nvivo (release 1.6.1 (1136)) and thematic analysis …

Feed Formulation: Expanding Our Horizons Beyond The Simple Provision Of Least-Cost Diets, Rick Kleyn, Mariana Ciacciariello Sep 2023

Feed Formulation: Expanding Our Horizons Beyond The Simple Provision Of Least-Cost Diets, Rick Kleyn, Mariana Ciacciariello

Proceedings of the Arkansas Nutrition Conference

Commercial feed formulation is typically based on linear programming (LP) algorithms that derive a least-cost solution for a blend of ingredients that meet specific nutrient criteria. This methodology has been effectively used for decades, but how we achieve our primary goal, which is sustainable poultry production, needs to be reconsidered in broader terms. Some of the issues that this paper will deal with are: not all parameters that we consider are linear and additive; we are still unsure of how to build the matrix required for feed formulation; dealing with the variability encountered in every batch of ingredient remains a …

Trumpet Directivity From A Rotating Semicircular Array, Samuel D. Bellows, Joseph E. Avila, Timothy W. Leishman Sep 2023

Trumpet Directivity From A Rotating Semicircular Array, Samuel D. Bellows, Joseph E. Avila, Timothy W. Leishman

Directivity

The directivity function of a played musical instrument describes the angular dependence of its acoustic radiation and diffraction about the instrument, musician, and musician’s chair. Directivity influences sound in rehearsal, performance, and recording environments and signals in audio systems. Because high-resolution, spherically comprehensive measurements of played musical instruments have been unavailable in the past, the authors have undertaken research to produce and share such data for studies of musical instruments, simulations of acoustical environments, optimizations of microphone placements, and other applications. The authors acquired the data from repeated chromatic scales produced by a trumpet played at mezzo-forte in an anechoic …

Homeostatic Synaptic Plasticity Of Miniature Excitatory Postsynaptic Currents In Mouse Cortical Cultures Requires Neuronal Rab3a, Andrew G. Koesters, Mark M. Rich, Kathrin L. Engisch Sep 2023

Homeostatic Synaptic Plasticity Of Miniature Excitatory Postsynaptic Currents In Mouse Cortical Cultures Requires Neuronal Rab3a, Andrew G. Koesters, Mark M. Rich, Kathrin L. Engisch

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Following prolonged activity blockade, amplitudes of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) increase, a form of homeostatic plasticity termed “synaptic scaling.” We previously showed that a presynaptic protein, the small GTPase Rab3A, is required for full expression of the increase in miniature endplate current amplitudes following prolonged blockade of action potential activity at the mouse neuromuscular junction in vivo (Wang et al., 2011), but it is unknown whether this form of Rab3A-dependent homeostatic plasticity shares any characteristics with central synapses. We show here that synaptic scaling of mEPSCs is impaired in mouse cortical neuron cultures prepared from Rab3A-/- and Rab3A Earlybird …

Towards Safe Automated Refactoring Of Imperative Deep Learning Programs To Graph Execution, Raffi Khatchadourian, Tatiana Castro Vélez, Mehdi Bagherzadeh, Nan Jia, Anita Raja Sep 2023

Towards Safe Automated Refactoring Of Imperative Deep Learning Programs To Graph Execution, Raffi Khatchadourian, Tatiana Castro Vélez, Mehdi Bagherzadeh, Nan Jia, Anita Raja

Publications and Research

Efficiency is essential to support responsiveness w.r.t. ever-growing datasets, especially for Deep Learning (DL) systems. DL frameworks have traditionally embraced deferred execution-style DL code—supporting symbolic, graph-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) computation. While scalable, such development is error-prone, non-intuitive, and difficult to debug. Consequently, more natural, imperative DL frameworks encouraging eager execution have emerged at the expense of run-time performance. Though hybrid approaches aim for the “best of both worlds,” using them effectively requires subtle considerations to make code amenable to safe, accurate, and efficient graph execution. We present our ongoing work on automated refactoring that assists developers in specifying whether …

Mapping The Indigenous Postcolonial Possibilities Of Teacher Preparation, Anna Lees, Ann Marie Ryan, Marissa Muñoz, Charles Tocci Sep 2023

Mapping The Indigenous Postcolonial Possibilities Of Teacher Preparation, Anna Lees, Ann Marie Ryan, Marissa Muñoz, Charles Tocci

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this article, a team of teacher educators collectively think through the many possibilities of how concepts such as decolonization, abolition, and fugitivity intersect with and are taken up by teacher education programs. To do so, we undertook a critical interpretive synthesis of scholarly literature spanning 2000 to 2020 to locate, examine, and organize existing examples of teacher education programs that work to transgress hegemonic colonial models of education. We revisit de Oliveira Andreotti et al.’s social cartography as a framework for comparing the theoretical foundations and social implications of each teacher education program.
