Producing Oral Medicines In Lettuce To Fight Chronic Diseases, Carlos E. Balmaceda, Megha Goyal, Anubhav Pal May 2026

Producing Oral Medicines In Lettuce To Fight Chronic Diseases, Carlos E. Balmaceda, Megha Goyal, Anubhav Pal

Create@State

Chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel diseases, require patients’ commitment to their treatment, which can be challenging over time. Edible plants could help address this challenge by acting as living factories that produce a range of drugs, including medicinal proteins. Patients could eat the plants because their cells have a sturdy outer layer that protects and helps deliver the medicine. Lettuce is an example of a common vegetable that can serve this purpose. The main goal of this project is to develop a medicinal protein production and oral delivery system using lettuce plants. We will build a small version of …

The Numeral System Of The Bena Language: Structure And Socio-Cultural Functions, Faraja Mwendamseke May 2026

The Numeral System Of The Bena Language: Structure And Socio-Cultural Functions, Faraja Mwendamseke

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Numeral systems in Bantu languages reflect both linguistic structure and socio cultural functions. This paper explores the structure and socio-cultural functions of the Bena numeral system. The research employed a qualitative approach whereby the data were gathered through elicitation, and non-participant observation. The study was guided by the cognitive linguistics theory, which reveals how language shapes numerical cognition; testing linguistic relativity by showing how structural features like bases and classifiers influence thinking, memory, and arithmetic acquisition across cultures. The results show that numerals in Bena depict agreements with the noun class system, and follow additive structures in compound forms. The …

Say It In Kiswahili: The Impact Of English As The Medium Of Instruction On Students' Comprehension And Expression In Tertiary Education, Tamasha Kitalima May 2026

Say It In Kiswahili: The Impact Of English As The Medium Of Instruction On Students' Comprehension And Expression In Tertiary Education, Tamasha Kitalima

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The challenge of using and understanding English Language by Kiswahili L1 speaking learners is dominant in Tanzania. Having English as a foreign language (i.e. not largely spoken at social contexts) make it not accessible to many. Moreover, in Tanzania research shows that English being the medium of instructions to all subjects (except Kiswahili, Chinese, French, Arabic, and Historia ya Tanzania) from secondary schools to universities limit these learners from understanding academic content, expressing themselves in written and spoken forms, and succeeding in exams. The present study aimed to explore how the use of English as the language of instruction affects …

Faces Of Identity: Materials-Based Social Studies Learning In Early Childhood Teacher Education, Elizabeth N. Christian Dr. May 2026

Faces Of Identity: Materials-Based Social Studies Learning In Early Childhood Teacher Education, Elizabeth N. Christian Dr.

The Great Lakes Social Studies Journal

This practice-based article explores how materials-centered, play-based learning experiences support preservice teachers’ understandings of identity as a foundational component of early childhood social studies. Situated within a 15-week teacher education course, the article describes a preservice-teacher-designed learning center focused on faces and identity. Through engagement with open-ended materials, preservice teachers explored self-awareness, perspective-taking, and belonging through construction and dialogue. Reflections and artifacts from the experience illustrate how identity emerged through doing rather than abstract discussion alone. The article suggests that materials can mediate social studies learning in early childhood teacher education. By designing experiences that position identity, relationships, and belonging …

Evaluating Sources In The Age Of Ai And Misinformation: Practical Routines For Social Studies Classrooms, Viloshinee Murugan Ph.D May 2026

Evaluating Sources In The Age Of Ai And Misinformation: Practical Routines For Social Studies Classrooms, Viloshinee Murugan Ph.D

The Great Lakes Social Studies Journal

As students encounter information through search engines, social media, and AI-generated content, evaluating sources has become more complex and essential in social studies classrooms. Research shows that students struggle to judge credibility, trace claims to evidence, and recognize how context, authorship, and purpose shape information. This article argues that these challenges are not the result of student apathy or inability, but of limited opportunities to practice evaluative reasoning as a routine disciplinary habit. Drawing on scholarship in disciplinary literacy and civic reasoning, as well as nearly three decades of practitioner experience, the article presents practical instructional routines, sample mini-lessons, and …

Walking The Map: Exploring Illinois Using Giant Traveling Maps, Irenea Walker, Kim Carthans May 2026

Walking The Map: Exploring Illinois Using Giant Traveling Maps, Irenea Walker, Kim Carthans

The Great Lakes Social Studies Journal

While it is common for any social studies discipline to receive limited instructional time in the elementary classroom, geography would be among the least taught (Bauml, 2023; Hinde, 2014). As a result, many students lack even the basic knowledge of geography, such as state capitals, geographical locations, and major landmarks. It is even more alarming that elementary students are unaware of the geography of their own state. National Geographic Society introduced giant floor traveling maps over a decade ago through each state’s National Geographic Alliance (2025). The gigantic floor map helps students get a sense of the map's places through …

Ice9 L Software/Hardware, Ternary Bios, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise May 2026

Ice9 L Software/Hardware, Ternary Bios, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise

Defensive Publications Series

ICE9L is a path-cost specification, not a storage-size claim. It defines state transition cost across a 20-position traversal strip (domain 0..19), where the goal is collapse, route, and resolve — not the holding of 20 bits of data. The specification is organized into three independently-ruled layers that compose sequentially: a Math Layer operating on exact arithmetic with no rounding; a Kernel Layer defining a ternary seated core at position 0 0 8 0 0, stable only while both guard positions hold exact zero; and a Legal Layer applying threshold classification, under which any non-zero presence — however small — resolves …

The Employee Simulation: Why The Internet Feels Like Work Because It Is, Subtitle: 13 Bits, 6 Questions, 5 Before Escape, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise May 2026

The Employee Simulation: Why The Internet Feels Like Work Because It Is, Subtitle: 13 Bits, 6 Questions, 5 Before Escape, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise

Defensive Publications Series

The internet no longer behaves like a tool. It behaves like an employer. This paper argues that simulation theory is not a question of graphics fidelity, but of labor structure: interplanetary file systems mirror human organizations 1:1, legally and operationally, because they were trained on us.

We propose a simple human model: every agent — human or handle — operates inside a box containing six questions. With 13 bits of identity (the emergent length of a Twitter-style handle), an agent can reliably answer five before exhaustion. The sixth question is escape, and the system is designed so it is rarely …

Conflict Resolution For Data Loss Prevention Rules In Video Communication Via Strict Linear Precedence, N/A, N/A, N/A May 2026

Conflict Resolution For Data Loss Prevention Rules In Video Communication Via Strict Linear Precedence, N/A, N/A, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

Conflicts in data protection policy enforcement for video conferencing are often addressed using subjective hierarchies of rule strictness or sensitivity. Such methods produce unpredictable results when multiple overlapping policies are applied to a single session. To address these limitations, disclosed is a method for evaluating data loss prevention rules using strict linear precedence. Rules are processed sequentially according to their order in a predefined administrative list. Every rule evaluated later in the sequence overrides any previous settings for the specific parameters it modifies, regardless of the perceived rigor of the rule. Evaluation is performed during session instantiation or when classification …

Kombucha is a fermented sweet tea produced using a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) and has gained widespread popularity due to its proposed health benefits. Kombucha has been studied to understand these advantages in cardiovascular support, improved metabolism, increased antioxidant effects, enhanced antimicrobial properties, and even potentially slowing the progression of certain diseases. Despite its increasing popularity, the way in which the specific bioactive compounds responsible for these effects and the fermentation conditions that influence their production remain unclear. The present study, conducted in collaboration with Dr. Budner, focuses on quantifying bioactive compounds in kombucha to better understand …

The Legacy Of Lead: Lead Exposure's Harmful Effects And Its Concentration In Poc Communities, Layla Sophronia Barber May 2026

The Legacy Of Lead: Lead Exposure's Harmful Effects And Its Concentration In Poc Communities, Layla Sophronia Barber

Student Theses 2015-Present

This thesis examines the disproportionate burden of lead exposure carried by low income, POC communities. The systemic nature of this problem is a symptom of a longstanding legacy of environmental injustice in the United States. Decades of federal neglect are reflected in the higher statistics of lead exposure and poisoning in predominantly black communities. While it is understood that lead exposure poses a serious threat to physical health and early cognitive development, there is a discouraging lack of urgency to remove the toxin from non-wealthy communities. The material covered by this thesis aims to identify and correct the discriminatory social …

Understanding Our Emotional Gatekeepers: A Qualitative Study Of Teacher Attrition In Diverse Catholic Schools, Lionel Garcia

LMU Theses and Dissertations

In the post-pandemic era, educators in Catholic schools in diverse communities serve as emotional gatekeepers, vital social justice agents who act as the final filter between vulnerable students and a landscape of poverty, immigration fears, and digital disinformation. This study centers the voices of these highly capable educators to investigate the factors that led to their departure from the profession despite a strong vocational commitment. By listening to the stories of eight former teachers through narrative inquiry, the researcher identifies the specific factors that led to the teachers’ departures. The findings reveal that the decision to leave is driven by …

Solid Waste Management In Greater Khartoum City, Sudan, Roba Mahmoud

Student Theses 2015-Present

This study investigates the rising solid waste management (SWM) dilemma in Greater Khartoum City (GKC), a critical environmental and public health issue caused by fast urbanization and inadequate infrastructure, with historical linkages to Sudan's colonial and postcolonial growth. Chapter 1 describes the current problem using quantitative and qualitative data, demonstrating that GKC produces approximately 3,340 tons of waste each day, with 56% organic matter, 8% plastics, and 16% paper. Collection efficiency remains severely poor, at 31.5%. Informal recyclers known as Nakasha or Barkata collect approximately 7% of total waste, supporting roughly 3,900 people, whereas filthy open dumps and unsorted medical …

Differentiation In The Arts: Choice-Based Learning To Increase Engagement, Katie Caskey May 2026

Differentiation In The Arts: Choice-Based Learning To Increase Engagement, Katie Caskey

Art 895 Research Papers

There are many ways in which an art educator teaches. However, some struggle to get students to be engaged with the subject matter or materials. Choice-based project learning can facilitate engagement by allowing students to choose the subject matter or medium in order to become more involved with the learning process. This Arts-Based Research study, using narrative inquiry and visual arts, explores the effects choice-based learning has on the outcome of a project and overall engagement within the learning experience. Students will be given choices throughout the project, essentially making it their own while also meeting the requirements of the …

Artistic Thinking In Stem Contexts: A Comparative Arts-Based Case Study Of Studio Habits Of Mind And Stem Thinking Frameworks, Annmarie Andersen May 2026

Artistic Thinking In Stem Contexts: A Comparative Arts-Based Case Study Of Studio Habits Of Mind And Stem Thinking Frameworks, Annmarie Andersen

Art 895 Research Papers

STEM-aligned schools often include arts through STEAM initiatives, but it is unclear how artistic thinking actually complements or differs from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) thinking. Studio Thinking research identifies Studio Habits of Mind (SHoM) as ways students think and learn through artmaking many of which parallel STEM competencies (thinking practices) such as problem-solving, modeling, and iterative design (Hetland, et al., 2013; Laquea, 2024).

Using student artwork, sketches, and student reflections as primary evidence, this comparative arts-based case study compares how Studio Habits of Mind align with and diverge from STEM thinking frameworks. By comparing these forms of evidence, the …

A Comparative Static Analysis Of Identifier Clones And Homonyms In Open Source Projects, Jose Palomino Lau May 2026

A Comparative Static Analysis Of Identifier Clones And Homonyms In Open Source Projects, Jose Palomino Lau

Theses

Identifier naming is a core element of software engineering and program comprehension. While existing literature suggests that naming consistency is ideal, there is limited empirical data on identifier homonyms, instances where the same name is used for different behaviors. This thesis investigates these naming patterns through a manual analysis inspired by grounded theory, supported by static analysis with srcML across three open source projects in Java, C and Python. By establishing a behavioral framework through axial coding, this research classifies 771 identifiers into functional categories to document their presence and role within the code. The results reveal that naming redundancy …

Development And Launch Of Abn: An Adventist Freelance Web Application, Abishur Moses-Pakkianathan May 2026

Development And Launch Of Abn: An Adventist Freelance Web Application, Abishur Moses-Pakkianathan

MS in Computer Science Project Reports

The Seventh-day Adventist community often relies on personal networks and word-of-mouth for Adventist business services. Many of these businesses meet and provide services to their clients primarily through church connections and community recommendations. As the community and businesses grow, traditional networking methods become increasingly difficult to maintain. General marketplaces lack the trust framework shared by Adventists, and faith-based directories are often static or outdated without booking capabilities. Our solution provides a reliable and modern platform for Adventists to create service listings, receive and manage bookings, and connect with faith-aligned clients.

Identifying The Cultural Significance Behind Local Study Sites Used By Marine Scientists, Mackenzie Anonick May 2026

Identifying The Cultural Significance Behind Local Study Sites Used By Marine Scientists, Mackenzie Anonick

Honors Theses

This project brings awareness to the cultural significance of places that scientists (specifically marine scientists associated with CCU) study and do field work at. It is important to be respectful of places you work in and understand what environment and land you are working with. It is also important to know your privilege when working in areas of less privilege. For example, CCU students travel to Bucksport on field trips, and the majority of them are not aware of the fact that Bucksport is a largely Black and lower income town that has extreme flooding issues that impact the residents …

Plastic Material Analysis And Bonding In Small Aquatic Vessels, Andrew R. Orr May 2026

Plastic Material Analysis And Bonding In Small Aquatic Vessels, Andrew R. Orr

Honors College Theses

This project presents the design and development of a suitable vessel for small-scale aquatic applications. The developed project is used for a remote-controlled duck hunting system, and the parameters of the design are based on the requirements for the system as a whole. Traditionally, plastics are fabricated using blow molding to create a single seamless form. However, for small-scale prototyping with limited resources, this method of fabrication is unsustainable for short-term, non-industrial design applications. As a result, an existing longer hull is selected and shortened to meet the required project length. The project evaluates multiple initial hull designs, ultimately selecting …
