The New People V. Collins: How Can Probabilistic Evidence Be Properly Admitted?, David Crump Jan 2024

The New People V. Collins: How Can Probabilistic Evidence Be Properly Admitted?, David Crump

Maine Law Review

The California Supreme Court’s decision in People v. Collins is a staple in Evidence casebooks. An innovative assistant district attorney in the trial court had presented a mathematician who applied probabilities to questions about the perpetrators’ characteristics. The state supreme court disapproved the injection of an equation featuring what mathematicians call the “product rule.” The opinion contains thank-goodness-we-escaped-that-disaster reasoning and condemnation of this use of mathematics with probabilities. But the court’s analysis probably would be different if the case were decided today, as the “new” People v. Collins. Therefore, this Article considers what the author calls the new People v. …

Prediction of taxi service demand and supply is essential for improving customer experience and provider's profit. Recently, graph neural networks (GNNs), modeling city areas as nodes in a transportation graph, have been shown efficient for this application as they utilize both local node features and the graph structure in the prediction. Still, further improvement can be achieved by either simultaneously exploiting different types of nodes/edges in the graphs or enlarging the scale of the transportation graph. However, both alternatives are challenged by the scalability of GNNs. An immediate remedy to the scalability challenge is to decentralize the GNN operation. In …

Meanings, Speech Acts, And Legal Contents Produced By Plural Lawmaking Bodies, Scott Soames

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

Language is both our most powerful cognitive tool and our most basic social institution, without which neither law, government, nor science would be possible. Because it is so central to nearly everything we do, its familiarity tempts us to overestimate how much we understand about the way it functions in different domains. My task is to illuminate (i) how to extract legal content from linguistic acts of lawmakers in the United States, and (ii) how this linguistically expressed content is sometimes modified by legal interpretation, when law is applied to particular cases. Although (i-ii) are grounded in facts about ordinary …

Discord In Concordance Cosmology And Anomalously Massive Early Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Jan 2024

Discord In Concordance Cosmology And Anomalously Massive Early Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

Cosmological parameters are constrained by a wide variety of observations. We examine the concordance diagram for modern measurements of the Hubble constant, the shape parameter from the large-scale structure, the cluster baryon fraction, and the age of the universe, all from non-CMB data. There is good agreement for (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.). This concordance value is indistinguishable from the WMAP3 cosmology but is not consistent with that of Planck: there is a tension in (Formula presented.) as well as (Formula presented.). These tensions have emerged as progressively higher multipoles have been incorporated into CMB fits. This temporal evolution is …

Augusta: From Rna-Seq To Gene Regulatory Networks And Boolean Models, Jana Musilova, Zdenek Vafek, Bhanwar Lal Puniya, Ralf Zimmer, Tomáš Helikar, Karel Sedlar

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Computational models of gene regulations help to understand regulatory mechanisms and are extensively used in a wide range of areas, e.g., biotechnology or medicine, with significant benefits. Unfortunately, there are only a few computational gene regulatory models of whole genomes allowing static and dynamic analysis due to the lack of sophisticated tools for their reconstruction. Here, we describe Augusta, an open-source Python package for Gene Regulatory Network (GRN) and Boolean Network (BN) inference from the high-throughput gene expression data. Augusta can reconstruct genome-wide models suitable for static and dynamic analyses. Augusta uses a unique approach where the first estimation of …

Gaussian Processes And Nested Sampling Applied To Kepler's Small Long-Period Exoplanet Candidates, Michael R.B. Matesic, Jason F. Rowe, John H. Livingston, Shishir Dholakia, Daniel Jontof-Hutter, Jack J. Lissauer

Pacific Faculty Work

There are more than 5000 confirmed and validated planets beyond the solar system to date, more than half of which were discovered by NASA’s Kepler mission. The catalog of Kepler’s exoplanet candidates has only been extensively analyzed under the assumption of white noise (i.i.d. Gaussian), which breaks down on timescales longer than a day due to correlated noise (point-to-point correlation) from stellar variability and instrumental effects. Statistical validation of candidate transit events becomes increasingly difficult when they are contaminated by this form of correlated noise, especially in the low-signal-to-noise (S/N) regimes occupied by Earth-Sun and Venus-Sun analogs. To diagnose small …

A Quintic B-Spline Technique For A System Of Lane-Emden Equations Arising In Theoretical Physical Applications, Osama Ala’Yed, Ahmad Qazza, Rania Saadeh, Osama Alkhazaleh

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

In the present study, we introduce a collocation approach utilizing quintic B-spline functions as bases for solving systems of Lane Emden equations which have various applications in theoretical physics and astrophysics. The method derives a solution for the provided system by converting it into a set of algebraic equations with unknown coefficients, which can be easily solved to determine these coefficients. Examining the convergence theory of the proposed method reveals that it yields a fourth-order convergent approximation. It is confirmed that the outcomes are consistent with the theoretical investigation. Tables and graphs illustrate the proficiency and consistency of the proposed …

Conservatism, Ideology, Skepticism, Brandon Turner Jan 2024

Conservatism, Ideology, Skepticism, Brandon Turner

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

The occasion for this essay concerns the prospects of modern conservative political philosophy; more directly, it calls for the provision of “a systematic and comprehensive account of conservatism.” Given our present moment, at which the political parties and institutions of the political right seem increasingly unmoored from any philosophical anchor, such an occasion appears altogether appropriate. Yet there is good reason to think that accounts of conservatism will not be systematic in the way desired and will in fact tend to rule out entirely systematic approaches—at least according to the commonplace understanding of “systematic”—to government or political philosophy. The belief—often …

Contemporary Conservative Thought: The View From San Diego, William A. Galston

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

At the conference on “Modern Conservative Political Philosophy” convened at the University of San Diego on September 16–17, 2022, eleven authors presented papers. They fall into four broad categories.

Three of the papers offer broad defenses of conservatism as it has been theorized and practiced in the United States since the 1950s. William Voegeli observes—accurately—that “by following their own premises, an increasingly postmodern Left and an increasingly premodern Right have ended up questioning the worth and feasibility of republican self-government.” This leaves the beleaguered Center, long the common ground between traditional liberals and traditional conservatives. According to Voegeli, this “increasingly …

Beyond Standard Model: Structure Factors Of Models Of Different Quarks And Neutrinos As Spinning Structures Made Of Basic Fractional Charges +- E/3, Polievkt Perov

College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works

We consider a possible line of “elementary” particles as composite spinning structures made of just two basic elementary particles of charges + e/3 and -e/3. In considered structures, up to 3 basic charges can be on the axis of rotation and other charges can be in a revolving motion about the axis. In addition to the simplest structures of quarks, an electron and a neutral particle containing mostly one or no charges on the axis of rotation, suggested initially in [4], we analyze possible spatial structures of spinning composite particles having 2 or 3 charges on the axis of rotation. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bio Based Amphiphilic Molecules, Vandana Singh Jan 2024

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bio Based Amphiphilic Molecules, Vandana Singh

Theses and Dissertations

Among various molecular self-assemblies, low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs), that can form gels in organic solvents/water/oils, have gained much research attention due to their huge potential applications. Generally, gels are soft nanomaterials formed by the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules into a three-dimensional fibrous network entrapping the solvent.

As these gels are formed by self-assembly via non-covalent interactions they are reversible and differ from macromolecular gels. To synthesize LMWGs, biomolecules such as fats, oils, fatty acids, lignocelluloses, sugars, amino acids, and peptides are commonly used as their inherent property favors self-assembly. In the current scenario, interest in synthesizing bio-based gelators has …

Cathodoluminescence And Tip-Plasmon Resonance Of Bi2te3 Triangular Nanostructures, Qigeng Yan, Siyuan Wang, Kuiwen Guan, Xiaojin Guan, Lei He

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bi2Te3, as a topological insulator, is able to support plasmonic emission in the visible spectral range. Thin Bi2Te3 flakes can be exfoliated directly from a Bi2Te3 crystal, and the shape of Bi2Te3 flakes can be further modified by focused ion beam milling. Therefore, we have designed a Bi2Te3 triangular antenna with distinct tip angles for the application of plasmonic resonance. The plasmonic emission of the Bi2Te3 triangular antenna is excited and investigated by cathodoluminescence in the scanning electron microscope. Enhanced tip …

Renaud, Lidia Lins, Luana Da Costa Monteiro, William G. Ambrose, Janine Felden, Thomas Krumpen, Frank Wenzhöfer, Maria Włodarska-Kowalczuk, Ulrike Braeckman

Marine Science

Arctic marine ecosystems are becoming more boreal due to climate change. Predictions of ecosystem change focus mainly on Arctic inflow or interior shelves, with few comprehensive studies on Arctic outflow regions. During September–October 2017, soft-bottom communities were sampled and benthic ecosystem processes were quantified at 12 stations on the Northeast Greenland shelf (outflow shelf) and compared to the last regional ecosystem study, conducted in 1992 and 1993. The benthic habitat was characterized in terms of sediment granulometry, pigment concentrations, and porewater chemistry (dissolved inorganic carbon, nutrients). Total abundance and biomass of macrobenthos and meiobenthos, bacterial abundance, porewater dissolved inorganic carbon …

Locally Tight Programs, Jorge Fandinno, Vladimir Lifschitz, Nathan Temple

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Program completion is a translation from the language of logic programs into the language of first-order theories. Its original definition has been extended to programs that include integer arithmetic, accept input, and distinguish between output predicates and auxiliary predicates. For tight programs, that generalization of completion is known to match the stable model semantics, which is the basis of answer set programming. We show that the tightness condition in this theorem can be replaced by a less restrictive “local tightness” requirement. From this fact we conclude that the proof assistant ANTHEM-P2P can be used to verify equivalence between locally tight …

Effect Of Zwitterionic Additives On Solvation And Transport Of Sodium And Potassium Cations In (Ethylene Oxide)10: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study, Manh Tien Nguyen, Yuhua Duan, Qing Shao

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Sodium- (Na+) and potassium- (K+) ion batteries are cost-effective alternatives to lithium- ion (Li+) batteries due to the abundant sodium and potassium resources. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are essential for safer and more efficient Na+ and K+ batteries because they often exhibit low ionic conductivity at room temperature. While zwitterionic (ZW) materials enhance Li+ battery conductivity, their potential for Na+ and K+ transport in batteries remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated the effect of three ZW molecules (ChoPO4, i.e., 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphoryl- choline, ImSO3, i.e., sulfobetaine ethylimidazole, and ImCO2, i.e., carboxybetaine ethylimidazole) on the dissociation of Na+ and K+ coordination …

The heterogeneity inherent in cancer means that even a successful clinical trial merely results in a therapeutic regimen that achieves, on average, a positive result only in a subset of patients. The only way to optimize an intervention for an individual patient is to reframe their treatment as their own, personalized trial. Toward this goal, we formulate a computational framework for performing personalized trials that rely on four mathematical techniques. First, mathematical models that can be calibrated with patient-specific data to make accurate predictions of response. Second, digital twins built on these models capable of simulating the effects of interventions. …

The Qualitative Report

Marilyn Lichman's Qualitative Research in Education: A User’s Guide is a well-written and valuable textbook for new and experienced researchers. Regarding title and content, this textbook focuses more on educational research. Still, it does not rule out the possibility that this book can be used in qualitative research outside education. An exciting thing was the division of phases into three stages: (1) Tradition, theory, and practice; (2) Research planning; and (3) Collect, organize, and communicate. This perfect division allows researchers who have read this book to conduct qualitative research. Readers will also find that the examples used throughout the text …

The Shifting Landscape Of Adolescent Wellness In Boarding Schools: Can Time Spent Off Screens And Outdoors Improve Adolescent Wellbeing?, Kristen H. Peterson

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

For nearly twenty years I have worked directly with adolescents as an independent school educator. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the dorm, I have observed and supported students through their middle and high school experiences. During this time, I have witnessed an alarming shift in adolescent physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. Concurrently, I have observed a dramatic increase in the amount of time students spend using screen-based devices, and a decrease in their time spent outdoors.

Using research to ground my anecdotal accounts in empirical understanding, my thesis examines whether or not screen use might help …

Hyperstructures In Chemical Hyperstructures Of Redox Reactions With Three And Four Oxidation States, Fakhry Asad Agusfrianto, Sonea Andromeda, Mariam Hariri

All Works

Hyperstructures find numerous applications across various disciplines. One notable application is in chemistry, particularly in the context of chemical reactions. In 2014, Davvaz introduced the concept of bi-hyperstructures, but their application specifically in chemical reactions, has yet to be thoroughly explored in previous studies. Thus, the primary aim of this paper is to examine and analyze the different types of bi-hyperstructures present within chemical hyperstructures. The scope of this study focuses on two types of chemical hyperstructures: redox reactions and reactions in electrochemical cells. Within these chemical hyperstructures, we investigate the possibility of bi-hyperstructures among bi-semihypergroups, bi-hypergroups, bi-H_v-semigroups, and bi-H_v-groups. …
