Geologists As Colonial Scouts: The Rogers Expedition To Otavi And Tsumeb, Namibia, 1892–1895, Selby Hearth

Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship

From 1892 to 1895, the South West Africa Company (SWACO) expedition led by geologist Matthew Rogers conducted the first geologic mapping in Namibia’s Otavi Mountains, including the now world-famous Tsumeb Mine. This paper uses archival documents from the Rogers expedition to trace his geologic contributions and to illustrate important themes in the relationships between 19th century colonial geologists, Western colonizing governments, Indigenous communities, resource extraction, and corporations. To carry out his mapping, Rogers performed a continuous balancing act between British and German colonial powers and local African leaders. The local leaders and communities he interacted with variously resisted his incursions, …

Mineral wealth has motivated and funded extractive empires, often at the expense of local communities, workers, natural environments, and public health. Yet those connections are not recorded in traditional mineral catalogues, which divorce specimens from context. This article examines the roots of those omissions and situates mineral cataloguing in the larger body of literature on knowledge organization systems and their relation to power. We examine how colonial ideologies of land and people become entrenched in mineral cataloguing practices, and how this reinforces the ways that contemporary geologists think about their work. We argue that revising mineral cataloguing practices is a …

Crowdsourcing Surveillance, Chaz Arnett

Faculty Scholarship

In Unreasonable: Black Lives, Police Power, and the Fourth Amendment, Devon W. Carbado illuminates how both the spectacular and quotidian forms of racialized terror, brutality, and surveillance—characteristic of enslavement—have shaped the construction of our constitutional order. He argues that the combined social normalization and legal naturalization of racial hierarchy paved the way for the development of slave patrols and other early iterations of policing where incredible acts of violence against Black bodies were made ordinary and essential. He explains how this legacy continues today with Fourth Amendment jurisprudence not simply failing to protect rights but rather licensing police violence …

Xgboost Hyperberd Model Using Steam Platform, Yuh-Haur Chen

Data Science and Data Mining

This project investigates game pricing strategies in the Steam market using an XGBoost model, drawing motivation from Professor Xie's lecture, and presenting findings through a density plot that delineates two primary pricing strategies. A free-to-play approach, indicated by a significant hot spot, is adopted by developers focusing on post-purchase revenues through DLC, aesthetic purchases, and in-game transactions. This sailing strategy includes community-centric developers aiming to distribute their games for player engagement rather than profit.

The project illustrates the effectiveness of advanced modeling techniques in handling complex datasets, with significant predictive accuracy reflected by a reduced MSE from 0.3472 to 0.1397. …

DOES PATH MATTER: A QUANTITATIVE STUDY EXAMINING MATHEMATICS COURSE-TAKING PATTERNS AND DEGREE OR TRANSFER ATTAINMENT

Abstract

This quantitative study, guided by Bean and Metzner’s (1985) student attrition model, examined whether mathematics course-taking pattern is associated with a students’ chances of attaining degree or transfer at a community college. Six years of student data from a midwestern community college was used. Descriptive statistics of student course-taking patterns highlighted that more full-time and college level students enrolled in mathematics immediately while part-time and developmental level students delayed their enrollment in mathematics coursework. Contradicting assumptions at the midwestern community college under study, it …

A Quantitative Study On The Relationship Between Corequisite Support Courses And College Algebra Success, Kathleen Almy

Dissertations of Practice

Corequisite support courses have been used as an intervention in higher education to improve gateway college math course completion and reduce the time necessary to do so. While a substantial amount of research on the effectiveness of corequisite support exists, it has largely focused on non-STEM courses. This study was designed to further investigate the effectiveness of corequisite support courses but in the context of STEM courses like College Algebra. Specifically, the study explored the role of taking a corequisite version of College Algebra, with and without the consideration of a student’s initial placement, on both the probability of passing …

Female Biology, Jennifer Dever Jan 2024

Female Biology, Jennifer Dever

All USF Faculty Authored Books

Over twenty years ago I developed a course for the upper- level biology major at the University of San Francisco called

Female Biology. This was from what I perceived as a gap in the undergraduate biology curriculum- students were not learning about the evolutionary aspects of being female and studying the specific health-related issues unique to women. The information in the most widely used general biology textbooks written from a male perspective, focuses on research gained from male models by work conducted in male-led laboratories. There still exists a problem with a lack of adequate representation of women in biomedical …

Chemical Strategies For Tailoring Properties Of Nanomaterials Produced By Pulsed Laser Interaction In Liquid Environments, Katharine M. Tibbetts Jan 2024

Chemical Strategies For Tailoring Properties Of Nanomaterials Produced By Pulsed Laser Interaction In Liquid Environments, Katharine M. Tibbetts

Chemistry Publications

Interactions of intense ultrashort laser pulses with liquid media and at solid-liquid interfaces produce plasmas with high densities of reactive chemical species that promote the formation of nanomaterials. This work discusses the current understanding of laser-induced chemical reactions in aqueous medium involving hydrated electrons and hydroxyl radicals, and the effects of chemical additives on these reactions. Two chemical strategies are presented for controlling the composition of the laser-induced plasma and nanomaterial properties. First, adding chemical scavengers of hydroxyl radicals will be shown to inhibit metal oxidation, enabling the synthesis of ligand-free Ag and Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles by reduction of Au …

Capturing Biomarkers Associated With Alzheimer Disease Subtypes Using Data Distribution Characteristics, Kenneth Smith, Sharlee Climer Jan 2024

Capturing Biomarkers Associated With Alzheimer Disease Subtypes Using Data Distribution Characteristics, Kenneth Smith, Sharlee Climer

Computer Science Faculty Works

Late-onset Alzheimer disease (AD) is a highly complex disease with multiple subtypes, as demonstrated by its disparate risk factors, pathological manifestations, and clinical traits. Discovery of biomarkers to diagnose specific AD subtypes is a key step towards understanding biological mechanisms underlying this enigmatic disease, generating candidate drug targets, and selecting participants for drug trials. Popular statistical methods for evaluating candidate biomarkers, fold change (FC) and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), were designed for homogeneous data and we demonstrate the inherent weaknesses of these approaches when used to evaluate subtypes representing less than half of the diseased cases. …

Data-Driven Modeling And Vibration Control Of Rotary Systems, Sina Piramoon Jan 2024

Data-Driven Modeling And Vibration Control Of Rotary Systems, Sina Piramoon

Engineering Ph.D. Theses

This Ph.D. thesis presents an integrated approach to mitigating lateral vibrations in vertical shaft rotary machines during transient responses by combining physics-based and data-driven methodologies. Two primary strategies are explored and validated through experimental studies on a laboratory test rig.

The research introduces a novel method that integrates Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems (SINDy) with a physics-based approach to accurately reconstruct the governing nonlinear equations of vertical-shaft rotary machines. An extensive mathematical library supports this reconstruction, which underpins the design of a nonlinear controller using terminal sliding mode control (TSMC). This control technique effectively reduces lateral vibrations, ensuring the …

Additive Energies Of Subsets Of Discrete Cubes, Xuancheng Shao Jan 2024

Additive Energies Of Subsets Of Discrete Cubes, Xuancheng Shao

Mathematics Faculty Publications

For a positive integer n ≥ 2, define tn to be the smallest number such that the additive energy E (A) of any subset A ⊂ {0, 1, · · · , n − 1}d and any d is at most |A|tn . Trivially, we have tn ≤ 3 and tn ≥ 3 − logn 3n3 2n3 + n by considering A = {0, 1, · · · , n − 1}d. In this note, we investigate the behaviour of tn for large n and obtain the following non-trivial bounds: 3 − (1 + on→∞(1)) logn 3√3 4 ≤ tn …

The present study examines the effects of services on women that are rendered by a transitional homeless shelter, Ozanam Manor in Phoenix, Arizona. Specifically, the study aimed to ascertain whether these services have yielded discernible improvements in the circumstances of homeless women. Additionally, the study sought to determine whether certain subgroups of homeless women derive greater benefits from the services provided in comparison to others. The study employed a life-course theory to elucidate whether homeless women who have received assistance from the shelter have acquired the skills to effectively navigate and cope with adverse life circumstances, thereby mitigating the risk …

A Limit Order Book Model For High Frequency Trading With Rough Volatility, Yun S. Chen-Shue Jan 2024

A Limit Order Book Model For High Frequency Trading With Rough Volatility, Yun S. Chen-Shue

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

We introduce a financial model for limit order book with two main features: First, the limit orders and market orders for the given asset both appear and interact with each other. Second, the high frequency trading (HFT, for short) activities are allowed and described by the scaling limit of nearly-unstable multi-dimensional Hawkes processes with power law decay. The model eventually becomes a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE, for short) with the diffusion coefficient determined by a Volterra integral equation governed by a Hawkes process, whose Hurst exponent is less than 1/2, which makes the volatility path of the stochastic PDE …

Counting Cusp Forms By Analytic Conductor, Farrell Brumley, Djordje Milićević Jan 2024

Counting Cusp Forms By Analytic Conductor, Farrell Brumley, Djordje Milićević

Mathematics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Let F be a number field and n > 1 an integer. The universal family is the set F of all unitary cuspidal automorphic representations on GLn over F, ordered by their analytic conductor. We prove an asymptotic for the size of the truncated universal family F(Q) as Q ! 1, under a spherical assumption at the archimedean places when n > 3. We interpret the leading term constant geometrically and conjecturally determine the underlying Sato–Tate measure. Our methods naturally provide uniform Weyl laws with logarithmic savings in the level and strong quantitative bounds on the non-tempered discrete spectrum for GLn.
