Leadership In Two-Way Dual Language Programs: Administrative Decision Making In Elementary Two-Way Dual Language Programs, Ana R. Martínez-Fuentes

Theses and Dissertations

With an increase of English language learners in public schools across the United States, the importance of addressing the needs of students who require language access in their home language has resulted in an increase in the implementation of dual language programs. This increase continues to challenge educators to provide effective programs that provide quality instruction for English language learners. This has prompted schools to offer a two-way dual language program as an educational bilingual option to assist in meeting the needs of emergent bilingual students. In this qualitative case study, the researcher explored the extent to which school principals’ …

A Person-Centered Approach To The Mediating Effect Of Attention On Personality Similarity And Preference Using Eye-Tracking Technology, Gabriel Jose Sanchez

Theses and Dissertations

Similarity between personality traits has been observed to be predictive of preference and desirability in social relationships in various situations. Much of the research has approached detecting personality similarity on a trait-specific level using the Five Factor Model of personality or more recently by grouping individual personalities into clustered profiles using latent profile analysis. This study of 93 participants took a person-centered approach by detecting individual differences between participants’ personality profiles and target person profiles using Euclidean distance as a dissimilarity index. We then proposed attention as a mediating factor behind the observed association between personality similarity and preference. Using …

What Roosevelt Did To Brown V. Board Of Education, Or Race And Court Packing, Jill M. Fraley Jan 2024

What Roosevelt Did To Brown V. Board Of Education, Or Race And Court Packing, Jill M. Fraley

Scholarly Articles

Roughly one-third of American schools remain segregated. Scholars have offered a variety of explanations, mostly social and cultural, but sometimes legal, for why desegregation did not proceed effectively after Brown v. Board of Education. This Article articulates a less expected and previously undocumented cause: President Roosevelt's prior attempt at court packing slowed--even derailed--desegregation.

The story of what Roosevelt's court packing did to make the work of integration harder is a cautionary tale, particularly for those who want to alter the U.S. Supreme Court now in furtherance of a modern cause. The only reasonable route for reforming the Supreme Court must …

Antitrust Law For Blockchain Technology, Seth C. Oranburg Jan 2024

Antitrust Law For Blockchain Technology, Seth C. Oranburg

Law Faculty Scholarship

Applying traditional antitrust law to the modern world wide web could break the internet. Lina Khan, the FTC’s current chair, is pushing for enhanced antitrust enforcement to break up Big Tech, seemingly based on the assumption that antitrust law is the right tool for ensuring a free and equitable internet. This assumption may be in error, and this Article seeks to explain why. Antitrust doctrine originally developed from a law enacted 130 years ago to deal with monopolist “robber barons” like Standard Oil. Since 1890, the structure of markets has changed. Today’s information markets through the internet are much different …

The Bias Presumption, Bradley A. Areheart, Dave Hall Jan 2024

The Bias Presumption, Bradley A. Areheart, Dave Hall

Scholarly Works

The American workplace is a fractured sphere of public life, in which white men often wield power at the expense of women and people of color. However, that power imbalance is no longer fully imbued with the active animus that characterized the first few centuries of American life; now, much of the damage done by discrimination is done structurally and implicitly. Consequently, the operation of bias and disadvantage is often invisible to employers and employees alike. The problem of discrimination in American life is thus larger and deeper than a few bad actors, and it will be impossible to solve …

Marine Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The multi-to hyperspectral evolution of satellite ocean color sensors is anticipated to enable satellite-based identification of phytoplankton biodiversity, a key factor in aquatic ecosystem functioning and upper ocean biogeochemistry. In this work the bio-optical Phytoplankton Detection with Optics (PHYDOTax) approach for deriving taxonomic (class-level) phytoplankton community composition (PCC, e.g. diatoms, dinoflagellates) from hyperspectral information is evaluated in the Chesapeake Bay estuary on the U.S. East Coast. PHYDOTax is among relatively few optical-based PCC differentiation approaches available for optically complex waters, but it has not yet been evaluated beyond the California coastal regime where it was developed. Study goals include: (a) …

A Comparative Study On Parent Engagement Through The Lens Of Instrumental Music, Chad Altman

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Lowel Mason highlights the importance of integrating music learning into the curriculum alongside other fundamental skills such as reading, promoting his belief in the transformative power of music education and its impact on child development. Mason stated, “Children must be taught music as they are taught to read” (Pemberton, 1992). The benefits of music extend beyond mere enjoyment among children, as they actively participate in class by singing, dancing, and playing instruments. The arts offer cognitive benefits that extend beyond student engagement, and researchers continue to explore the association between music and academic achievement. Participating in a string orchestra or …

The Sudden Escalation In Average Fastball Velocity: A Biomechanical And Cost-Benefit Analysis, Jacob Meiners

Capstone Projects

Average fastball velocity throughout Major League Baseball has increased dramatically over the previous 15 years. This research examines the factors leading to this increase and provides a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether throwing consistently at high velocities is worth the injury risks, compared to financial benefits, from the player perspective. Additionally, this analysis examines if paying hard-throwing pitchers is worth the monetary risk from a team executive’s perspective, due to increases in leaguewide throwing injury rates. The production of advanced motion capture technology to obtain real-time biomechanical data has given way to the optimization of pitchers’ biomechanics, with the goals …

BACKGROUND: Hantaviruses are negative-stranded RNA viruses that can sometimes cause severe disease in humans; however, they are maintained in mammalian host populations without causing harm. In Panama, sigmodontine rodents serve as hosts to transmissible hantaviruses. Due to natural and anthropogenic forces, these rodent populations are having increased contact with humans.

METHODS: We extracted RNA and performed Illumina deep metatranscriptomic sequencing on Orthohantavirus seropositive museum tissues from rodents. We acquired sequence reads mapping to Choclo virus (CHOV, Orthohantavirus chocloense) from heart and kidney tissue of a two-decade old frozen museum sample from a Costa Rican pygmy rice rat (Oligoryzomys costaricensis) collected …

Supporting the spiritual growth of college and university students with diverse backgrounds and orientations is both important and challenging. It is important not only because spirituality is a crucial dimension of human life but also because the majority of students at both private and public schools want their teachers to address spiritual issues in the classroom. A powerful way to address spirituality is to explore and foster sacred experiences in university classrooms. Sacred experiences include religious, spiritual, mystical, transcendent, numinous, and peak experiences as well as many other nonordinary experiences. The author offers guidance to educators on how to: 1) …

Enzymatic Degradation Of Plastic Waste: A Review Of Microbial Strategies And Future Perspectives, David Gonçalves Jan 2024

Enzymatic Degradation Of Plastic Waste: A Review Of Microbial Strategies And Future Perspectives, David Gonçalves

Seton Hall Biochemistry II Annals of Student Reviews

It is said that humans generate 2.01 billion tons of municipal waste every year and this number is projected to explode to a massive 3.40 billion tons annually by the year 2050 (Ellis, 2018). This increase in waste production perfectly underscores a growing reliance on materials that persist in ecosystems long-term. This contamination, generated from large-scale industrial practices to doing your laundry at home, is best exemplified by the proliferation of microplastics throughout the environment.

What are microplastics? The first documented use of the term microplastics can be traced to a 1990 publication in the South African Journal of Science …
