Probing Central Spin Decoherence Dynamics Of Electronic Point Defects In Diamond And Silicon, Ethan Que Williams

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Electron spins of point defects in diamond and silicon can exhibit long coherence times, making them attractive platforms for the physical implementation of qubits for quantum sensing and quantum computing. To realize these technologies, it is essential to understand the mechanisms that limit their coherence. Decoherence of these systems is well described by the central spin model, wherein the central electron spin weakly interacts with numerous electron and nuclear spins in its environment. The dynamics of the resultant dephasing can be probed with pulse electron paramagnetic resonance (pEPR) experiments.

Using a 2.5 GHz pEPR spectrometer built in-house, we performed multi-pulse …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Epigenetic modifications are defined as heritable changes in gene activity that do not involve changes in the underlying DNA sequence. The oncogenic process is driven by the accumulation of alterations that impact genome's structure and function. Genetic mutations, which directly disrupt the DNA sequence, are complemented by epigenetic modifications that modulate gene expression, thereby facilitating the acquisition of malignant characteristics. Principals among these epigenetic changes are shifts in DNA methylation and histone mark patterns, which promote tumor development and metastasis. Notably, the reversible nature of epigenetic alterations, as opposed to the permanence of genetic changes, positions the epigenetic machinery as …

Aneuploidy And Complex Genomic Rearrangements In Cancer Evolution, Toby M Baker, Sara Waise, Maxime Tarabichi, Peter Van Loo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Mutational processes that alter large genomic regions occur frequently in developing tumors. They range from simple copy number gains and losses to the shattering and reassembly of entire chromosomes. These catastrophic events, such as chromothripsis, chromoplexy and the formation of extrachromosomal DNA, affect the expression of many genes and therefore have a substantial effect on the fitness of the cells in which they arise. In this review, we cover large genomic alterations, the mechanisms that cause them and their effect on tumor development and evolution.

Mapping Urban Form Into Local Climate Zones For The Continental Us From 1986–2020, Meng Qi, Chunxue Xu, Wenwen Zhang, Matthias Demuzere, Perry Hystad, Tianjun Lu, Peter James, Benjamin Bechtel, Steve Hankey

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

Urbanization has altered land surface properties driving changes in micro-climates. Urban form influences people’s activities, environmental exposures, and health. Developing detailed and unified longitudinal measures of urban form is essential to quantify these relationships. Local Climate Zones [LCZ] are a culturally-neutral urban form classification scheme. To date, longitudinal LCZ maps at large scales (i.e., national, continental, or global) are not available. We developed an approach to map LCZs for the continental US from 1986 to 2020 at 100 m spatial resolution. We developed lightweight contextual random forest models using a hybrid model development pipeline that leveraged crowdsourced and expert labeling …

Two-Scale Data-Driven Design For Heat Manipulation, Daicong Da, Wei Chen Feb 2024

Two-Scale Data-Driven Design For Heat Manipulation, Daicong Da, Wei Chen

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Data-driven methods have gained increasing attention in computational mechanics and design. This study investigates a two-scale data-driven design for thermal metamaterials with various functionalities. To address the complexity of multiscale design, the design variables are chosen as the components of the homogenized thermal conductivity matrix originating from the lower scale unit cells. Multiple macroscopic functionalities including thermal cloak, thermal concentrator, thermal rotator/inverter, and their combinations, are achieved using the developed approach. Sensitivity analysis is performed to determine the effect of each design variable on the desired functionalities, which is then incorporated into topology optimization. Geometric extraction demonstrates an excellent matching …

Inverse Association Between Exercising Blood Pressure Response And Left Ventricular Chamber Size And Mass In Women Who Habitually Resistance Train, Evan L. Matthews, John J. Guers, Meghan G. Ramick, Peter A. Hosick

Department of Kinesiology Scholarship and Creative Works

Exercise is a major modifiable lifestyle factor that leads to temporarily increased systolic blood pressure (SBP), which is thought to influence left ventricular mass normalized to body surface area (LVM/BSA). This relationship has never been studied in women who habitually perform resistance exercise. Purpose: To determine if a direct correlation exists between the SBP response to resistance exercise (change from rest; eSBP) and LVM/BSA in young healthy women who habitually resistance train. Methods: Leg extension resistance exercise was performed while continuously monitoring blood pressure using finger plethysmography. LVM was estimated using echocardiography. Data are shown as mean ± SD. Results: …

Baghdad Science Journal

The use of real-time machine learning to optimize passport control procedures at airports can greatly improve both the efficiency and security of the processes. To automate and optimize these procedures, AI algorithms such as character recognition, facial recognition, predictive algorithms and automatic data processing can be implemented. The proposed method is to use the R-CNN object detection model to detect passport objects in real-time images collected by passport control cameras. This paper describes the step-by-step process of the proposed approach, which includes pre-processing, training and testing the R-CNN model, integrating it into the passport control system, and evaluating its accuracy …

After The Demise Of Affirmative Action, Ensuring Equitable Access To Educational Opportunities, Anna Gorman-Huang, Peter Henry Huang

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

On June 29, 2023, the United States Supreme Court held in two related cases that race-based affirmative action in college admissions is unconstitutional, because it violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. What is next in (higher) education after the Supreme Court’s rulings in two related cases brought by Students for Fair Admissions? The decisions may dramatically transform college admissions and even how universities think about allocating their resources and about their role in a democratic society. Even now, the Court’s holdings are rippling past highly selective college campuses to corporate boardrooms, non-profits, and state legislatures.

Despite the …

Expanding Landscapes: Intersections Between Writing Center Work And Other Academic Fields, Vicki R. Kennell, Maria Eloisa (Lisa) Nuguid, Vanessa Pruitt, Ashley Garla

Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Presentations

This presentation explores the intersections between writing center work and math education, counseling psychology, and speech/hearing sciences. The four fields share more similarities than first expected, such as prioritizing relational approaches and maintaining client agency. Implications for writing centers include the need to adjust consultant education to overtly explore such overlaps in order to increase new consultants’ confidence and circumvent potential problems caused by differing assumptions.

Brief Communication: Recent Estimates Of Glacier Mass Loss For Western North America From Laser Altimetry, Brian Menounos, Caitlyn Forentine, Alex A. Gardner, Andrew G. Fountain

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Glaciers in western North American outside of Alaska are often overlooked in global studies because their potential to contribute to changes in sea level is small. Nonetheless, these glaciers represent important sources of freshwater, especially during times of drought. Differencing recent ICESat-2 data from a digital elevation model derived from a combination of synthetic aperture radar data (TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X), we find that over the period 2013–2020, glaciers in western North America lost mass at a rate of 12:3+3:5 Gt yr-1. This rate is comparable to the rate of mass loss (11:71:0 Gt yr1) for the period 2018– 2022 calculated …
