Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are often characterized as Hispanic enrolling (rather than serving) that practice deficit-based systems that continue to marginalize Latinx and other underrepresented students, especially in STEM fields. Extant research on HSIs stresses the importance of investigating the value of grassroots advocacy groups as external influencers of institutional servingness through deeper engagement with the Latinx community. Using a novel family-centered theory of change that addresses diversity, equity, and inclusion, we integrated intersectionality and servingness into a family-integrated education serving and transforming academic framework. We investigated the potential transformational impact of this framework on students, families, faculty, and administrators at …

On The Use Of Gauge Functions To Obtain Convergent Power Series Solutions To Nonlinear Odes, Nastaran Naghshineh Feb 2024

On The Use Of Gauge Functions To Obtain Convergent Power Series Solutions To Nonlinear Odes, Nastaran Naghshineh

Theses

This dissertation examines the power series solutions---and their analytic continuation via gauge transformations---of three classical nonlinear ordinary differential equations arising in fluid mechanics that are mathematically related by their large-distance asymptotic behaviors in semi-infinite domains. The first problem examines the influence of surface tension and gravitational forces to form a static air--liquid interface that intersects a flat wall at a given contact angle and limits to a flat pool away from the wall. The second problem considers the related configuration of an axisymmetric air--liquid interface formed when the flat wall is replaced with a right circular cylinder. In both problems, …

A Degree Of Pro-Ip Preference: An Empirical Study Of The Relationship Between Federal Judges' Undergraduate Programs And Their Trade Secret Decisions, Christopher P. Dinkel Feb 2024

A Degree Of Pro-Ip Preference: An Empirical Study Of The Relationship Between Federal Judges' Undergraduate Programs And Their Trade Secret Decisions, Christopher P. Dinkel

West Virginia Law Review

While the previous literature has found that certain background characteristics of federal judges, such as their race, gender, and ideology, statistically correlate with case outcomes, little prior scholarship has examined the connection between judges’ educational backgrounds and their judicial decision-making. The empirical study that this Article presents fills a critical gap in the literature by statistically analyzing the relationship between federal judges’ undergraduate degrees and their rulings in cases related to trade secrets, a highly valuable form of intellectual property (IP) for many companies. Notably, it finds that if a trade secret case is assigned to a judge who possesses …

Relative Periodicity Of Empirical Audio Samples With Application To Dissonance Perception, Linden Faye, Spencer Kuhn, Anil Venkatesh Feb 2024

Relative Periodicity Of Empirical Audio Samples With Application To Dissonance Perception, Linden Faye, Spencer Kuhn, Anil Venkatesh

LASER Journal

The concept of dissonance in music perception has been variously associated with the physical concepts of roughness, instability, and tension by appealing to a subjective cross-sensory analogy. For all the subjectivity around the term, it is noteworthy that non-musical test subjects in clinical experiments have produced remarkably consistent rank-orderings of musical sounds, according to the perceived dissonance of those sounds. Further studies in psychology, neuroscience, and mathematics show that consonance perception appears to be influenced not only by convention and culture but by the psychoacoustics of sound perception, likely by some combination of the Helmholtz theory of roughness and the …

The Double Bond Of Catholic Abolition: Christianity, Chattel Slavery, And Racial Capitalism, Elayne Oliphant Feb 2024

The Double Bond Of Catholic Abolition: Christianity, Chattel Slavery, And Racial Capitalism, Elayne Oliphant

Journal of Global Catholicism

The reign of the first Pope to originate in the former colonies of the modern Euro-Christian empires calls us into awareness of the layers of interconnection between the Roman Catholic Church and the long “wake” (Sharpe 2016) of 1492. As anthropologists, I argue, our studies of Catholic practices must be informed by a detailed awareness of this history. I offer a broad historical view of how the Roman Catholic Church participated and, at times, led the way in initiating the trans-Atlantic system of Black chattel slavery and colonial expropriation in Euro-Christian Empires. As a scholar of Catholicism in France, I …

Optimizing Buying Strategies In Dominion, Nikolas A. Koutroulakis Feb 2024

Optimizing Buying Strategies In Dominion, Nikolas A. Koutroulakis

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

Dominion is a deck-building card game that simulates competing lords growing their kingdoms. Here we wish to optimize a strategy called Big Money by modeling the game as a Markov chain and utilizing the associated transition matrices to simulate the game. We provide additional analysis of a variation on this strategy known as Big Money Terminal Draw. Our results show that player's should prioritize buying provinces over improving their deck. Furthermore, we derive heuristics to guide a player's decision making for a Big Money Terminal Draw Deck. In particular, we show that buying a second Smithy is always more optimal …

A Canonical Transformation For The Anderson Lattice Hamiltonian With F–F Electron Coupling, Guang-Lin Zhao Feb 2024

A Canonical Transformation For The Anderson Lattice Hamiltonian With F–F Electron Coupling, Guang-Lin Zhao

Faculty Publications

In this work, a new canonical transformation for the Anderson lattice Hamiltonian with f–f electron coupling was developed, which was further used to identify a new Kondo lattice Hamiltonian. Different from the single impurity Kondo effect, the resulted new Kondo lattice Hamiltonian only includes the spin-flip scattering processes between conduction electrons and f-electrons, while the normal process of non-spin-flip scattering is absent in this Hamiltonian, under the second order approximation. The new Kondo lattice Hamiltonian may be used to study some anomalous physical properties in some Kondo lattice intermetallic compounds.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Canadian and American waterfowl hunters were surveyed to identify their hunting trip preferences. Respondents were individuals that were now participating or had participated in waterfowl hunting, and most had hunted the majority of the last five years. We identified four latent classes of waterfowl hunters that varied in their preferences for harvest, access effort, length of travel, quantity of waterfowl seen, and the potential for interference/competition. We found a diminishing return associated with the number of waterfowl harvested, and that ‘devoted’ and ‘local’ hunters did not perceive appreciable benefit from harvesting more birds beyond harvesting a single bird. Results highlight …

Impacts Of Marine Heatwaves On Subsurface Temperatures And Dissolved Oxygen In The Chesapeake Bay, Nathan P. Shunk, Piero L. F. Mazzini, Ryan K. Walter

Physics

Subsurface impacts associated with Marine Heatwaves (MHWs) in estuaries are not well understood, largely due to data scarcity. Using over three decades (1986–2021) of observations from several monitoring programs, this study investigates subsurface temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) anomalies associated with surface MHWs in the Chesapeake Bay (CB). Seasonal variability in temperature anomalies followed a simple 1-D response to surface heating with downward heat transport and diffusion controlled by seasonally variable stratification and mixing. Two distinct temperature regimes were found: a thermally stratified spring-summer regime, when positive temperature anomalies were confined to the surface mixed layer (SML); and a homogeneous …

River networks play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle, as relevant sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. Advancements in high-frequency monitoring in aquatic environments have enabled measurement of dissolved CO2 concentration at temporal resolutions essential for studying carbon variability and evasion from these dynamic ecosystems. Here, we describe the adaptation, deployment, and validation of an open-source and relatively low-cost in situ pCO2 sensor system for lotic ecosystems, the lotic-SIPCO2. We tested the lotic-SIPCO2 in 10 streams that spanned a range of land cover and basin size. Key system adaptations for lotic environments included prevention of biofouling, …

Evaluation Of Fendiline Treatment In Vp40 System With Nucleation-Elongation Process: A Computational Model Of Ebola Virus Matrix Protein Assembly, Xiao Liu, Monica Husby, Robert V. Stahelin, Elsje Pienaar

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Ebola virus (EBOV) infection is threatening human health, especially in Central and West Africa. Limited clinical trials and the requirement of biosafety level-4 laboratories hinder experimental work to advance our understanding of EBOV and the evaluation of treatment. In this work, we use a computational model to study the assembly and budding process of EBOV and evaluate the effect of fendiline on these processes in the context of fluctuating host membrane lipid levels. Our results demonstrate for the first time that the assembly of VP40 filaments may follow the nucleation-elongation theory, as this mechanism is critical to maintaining a pool …

The Significance Of Moral Agency For Socioeconomic Justice And Its Absence In Islamic Economics And Finance, Omar Javaid Feb 2024

The Significance Of Moral Agency For Socioeconomic Justice And Its Absence In Islamic Economics And Finance, Omar Javaid

Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics

The paper attempts to build a case for the moral agency of individuals operating within organic social networks – in contrast to the impersonal nature of financial institutions – as a necessary medium for practicing Islamic economic principles, for the goal of achieving socioeconomic justice in society. Through comparative analysis, the paper argues that the modern institutional framework due to its impersonal nature, capitalist orientation, agency cost, and socially disintegrative nature is not a suitable medium for advancing the agenda of Islamic economics. A market environment where individuals exercise their moral agency to the fullest is perhaps necessary. To make …
