Supersonic Air Inlet Modeling Using The Method Of Characteristics, Shay S. Takei Mar 2024

Supersonic Air Inlet Modeling Using The Method Of Characteristics, Shay S. Takei

Master's Theses

The Air Inlet Method of Characteristics Analysis Tool (AIMCAT), a tool based in Python 3, is developed to model supersonic air inlet geometries during the early phases of design. The method of characteristics (MOC) is used to solve the governing equations for an inviscid, irrotational, isentropic, steady, supersonic flowfield. A comparison is made between modeling shock waves implicitly using Mach wave coalescence and modeling them explicitly using oblique shock relations. Multiple test cases are used to assess the accuracy of the tool by comparing to experimental wind tunnel data. Good general agreement was achieved over the majority of the supersonic …

Coralai: Emergent Ecosystems Of Neural Cellular Automata, Aidan A. Barbieux, Aidan A. Barbieux

Master's Theses

Artificial intelligence has traditionally been approached through centralized architectures and optimization of specific metrics on large datasets. However, the frontiers of fields spanning cognitive science, biology, physics, and computer science suggest that intelligence is better understood as a multi-scale, decentralized, emergent phenomenon. As such, scaling up approaches that mirror the natural world may be one of the next big advances in AI. This thesis presents Coralai, a framework for efficiently simulating the emergence of diverse artificial life ecosystems integrated with modular physics. The key innovations of Coralai include: 1) Hosting diverse Neural Cellular Automata organisms in the same simulation that …

tive to promote transparency in state government by increasing access to the Califor-
nia legislature. While Digital Democracy is made up of many resources, one founda-
tional step of the project is obtaining accurate, timely transcripts of California Senate
and Assembly hearings. The information extracted from these transcripts provides
crucial data for subsequent steps in the pipeline. In the context of Digital Democracy,
upleveling is when humans verify, correct, and annotate the transcript results after
the legislative hearings have been automatically transcribed. The upleveling process
is done with the …

Finite Element Analysis Of The Bearing Component Of Total Ankle Replacement Implants During The Stance Phase Of Gait, Timothy S. Jain Mar 2024

Finite Element Analysis Of The Bearing Component Of Total Ankle Replacement Implants During The Stance Phase Of Gait, Timothy S. Jain

Master's Theses

Total ankle replacement (TAR) implants are an effective option to restore the range of motion of the ankle joint for arthritic patients. An effective tool for analyzing these implants’ mechanical performance and longevity in-silico is finite element analysis (FEA). ABAQUS FEA was used to statically analyze the von Mises stress and contact pressure on the articulating surface of the bearing component in two newly installed fixed-bearing total ankle replacement implants (the Wright Medical INBONE II and the Exactech Vantage). This bearing component rotates on the talar component to induce primary ankle joint motion of plantarflexion and dorsiflexion. The stress response …

“Safe” Annuity Retirement Products And A Possible Us Retirement Crisis, Thomas E. Lambert, Christopher B. Tobe Mar 2024

“Safe” Annuity Retirement Products And A Possible Us Retirement Crisis, Thomas E. Lambert, Christopher B. Tobe

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This paper examines a looming possible crisis in many Americans’ retirement plans due to the proliferation of annuity products in their retirement investment portfolios. As defined benefit pension plans have almost completely disappeared as a means of retirement savings and have been replaced by defined contribution retirement plans over the last 40 to 50 years, a great number of private and public sector defined contribution retirement plans have become laden with insurance contracts called annuities. Of the remaining solid defined benefit plans many, through a process called Pension Risk Transfer are being converted to high-risk single entity annuities. Such products …

Hearing Iterative And Recursive Behavior: Sonification Improves Student Understanding, Joel C. Adams, Hayworth Anderson Mar 2024

Hearing Iterative And Recursive Behavior: Sonification Improves Student Understanding, Joel C. Adams, Hayworth Anderson

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Abstract topics such as recursion are challenging for many computer science students to understand. In this experience report, we explore function sonification-the addition of sound to a function to communicate information about the function's behavior in real-time as it runs-as a pedagogical approach for improving students' understanding of recursion. We present several example iterative and recursive function sonifications, plus spectrograms that illustrate their different sonic behaviors. We also present experimental evidence that using these sonifications significantly improved the understanding of recursion for students who used them, compared to students who used silent (i.e., traditional) versions of the same functions. Based …

Predictive Understanding Of Lake Water Temperature And Dissolved Oxygen Profiles Across The Red River Basin Through Interpretable Machine Learning, Isabela Suaza Sierra Mar 2024

Predictive Understanding Of Lake Water Temperature And Dissolved Oxygen Profiles Across The Red River Basin Through Interpretable Machine Learning, Isabela Suaza Sierra

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Accurately predicting lake water temperature (LWT) and dissolved oxygen (DO) is crucial for determining threshold values of fish survivability under warmer global conditions, with recreational fishing in reservoirs significantly contributing to regional economies, such as $779 million and $1,891 million annually to the economies of Oklahoma and Texas, respectively. Current mathematical models for temperature and oxygen profiles, which incorporate multi-layer and turbulent mixing equations, are complex and challenging to parameterize, particularly due to uncertainties in acquiring sufficient data for training and validation. Leveraging the flexibility and information extraction power of machine learning (ML) methods, this master thesis aimed to set …

Fair Use In The Us Redux: Reformed Or Still Deformed?, Jane C. Ginsburg Mar 2024

Fair Use In The Us Redux: Reformed Or Still Deformed?, Jane C. Ginsburg

Faculty Scholarship

In 2019, Professor Ginsburg delivered the Distinguished Visitor in Intellectual Property Lecture at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore. Titled “Fair Use in the US: Transformed, Reformed, Deformed?”, the lecture explored US caselaw applying the statutory fair use exception, highlighting its excesses and apparent rebalancing. Four and half years (and a pandemic) later, the Supreme Court has rendered decisions in two fair use cases (Google v Oracle; Andy Warhol Foundation v Goldsmith). Together, these controversies prompt inquiry whether the Supreme Court has redrawn the landscape of US fair use and copyright law, expanding fair use …

We recently built the G4Jy-3CRE catalog of extragalactic radio sources. This catalog lists 264 powerful radio sources selected with similar criteria to those of the revised Third Cambridge Catalog, but visible from the Southern Hemisphere. A literature search revealed that 119 sources in the G4Jy-3CRE catalog (i.e., 45%) lack a firm spectroscopic redshift measurement. Here, we present a campaign aimed at acquiring optical spectra of G4Jy-3CRE sources and measuring their redshifts. We used single-slit observations obtained with the Víctor Blanco Telescope, the New Technology Telescope, the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope, and the 2.1 m telescope of the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional …

Objective: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in health care to aid clinical decisions is widespread. However, as AI and ML take important roles in health care, there are concerns about AI and ML associated fairness and bias. That is, an AI tool may have a disparate impact, with its benefits and drawbacks unevenly distributed across societal strata and subpopulations, potentially exacerbating existing health inequities. Thus, the objectives of this scoping review were to summarize existing literature and identify gaps in the topic of tackling algorithmic bias and optimizing fairness in AI/ML models using real-world data …

Identifying A Stable And Generalizable Factor Structure Of Major Depressive Disorder Across Three Large Longitudinal Cohorts, Vincent W S Tseng, Jordan A Tharp, Jacob E Reiter, Weston Ferrer, David S Hong, P Murali Doraiswamy, Stefanie Nickels

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) is the current standard outpatient screening tool for measuring and tracking the nine symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD). While the PHQ-9 was originally conceptualized as a unidimensional measure, it has become clear that MDD is not a monolithic construct, as evidenced by high comorbidities with other theoretically distinct diagnoses and common symptom overlap between depression and other diagnoses. Therefore, identifying reliable and temporally stable subfactors of depressive symptoms could allow research and care to be tailored to different depression phenotypes. This study improved on previous factor analysis studies of the PHQ-9 by leveraging …

Trapping And Scattering Of A Multiflagellated Bacterium By A Hard Surface, Alexander P. Petroff, Schuyler Mcdonough Mar 2024

Trapping And Scattering Of A Multiflagellated Bacterium By A Hard Surface, Alexander P. Petroff, Schuyler Mcdonough

Physics

Thiovulum majus, which is one of the fastest known bacteria, swims using hundreds of flagella. Unlike typical pusher cells, which swim in circular paths over hard surfaces, T. majus localize near hard boundaries by turning their flagella to exert a net force normal to the surface. To probe the torques that stabilize this hydrodynamically bound state, the trajectories of several thousand collisions between a T. majus cell and a wall of a quasi-two-dimensional microfluidic chamber are analyzed. Measuring the fraction of cells escaping the wall either to the left or to the right of the point of contact - and …

Maximizing Group Efficacy For The Generalized Cell Formation Problem Using Route Rank Index And Genetic Algorithm, Dhulfiqar Hakeem Dhayef, Sawsan S., Luma A. Al-Kindi

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

Cell formation plays a crucial role in the development of cellular manufacturing systems (CMS). Previous studies in this field have typically assumed that each part is associated with a single process plan. However, incorporating alternative routes offers additional flexibility in CMS design. This paper addresses the cell formation problem by considering alternative routes and presents a two-stage approach to address this problem. In the first stage, a Route Rank Index (RRI) is developed based on a correlation matrix to select the optimal alternative route for each part. Subsequently, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is employed in the second stage to form …

Advanced Intermediate Manufacturing (Aim) Supply Chain Concepts Leading To Reduced Lead Times And Improved Responsiveness, Eric S. Draudt

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the optimization of the supply chain for key aircraft components, focusing on the implementation of Advanced Intermediate Manufacturing (AIM) production facilities. Utilizing anyLogistix, the study compares the current supply chain model based on Supply Chain Operations Wing (SCOW) data with various AIM production facility configurations: single, dual, quadruple, and three utilization-driven models (high, medium, and low). The findings demonstrate that integrating AIM production facilities significantly reduces lead times, with even a single facility dramatically cutting down the lead time from over 800 days to approximately 104 days. The utilization models further provide insights into operational flexibility under …

Feasibility Of A Zero-Length Spring Gravimeter For Use In Portal Monitoring, Matthew C. Stone Mar 2024

Feasibility Of A Zero-Length Spring Gravimeter For Use In Portal Monitoring, Matthew C. Stone

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, gravimeters have become sensitive enough to theoretically measure masses of interest at distances relevant for portal monitoring. Characterizing the re[1]sponse of the gravimeter to close range masses across a large solid angle is necessary before attempting to demonstrate a portal-monitoring-like measurement due to this mission being outside the scope of typical gravimeter operations. The characterization of the gravimeter focused on three primary topics. For the position-dependent bias, it is found that the models used overestimate the expected observed gravity when the test mass is closest to the gravimeter in four out of seventeen experiments and under[1]estimate the …

Voice Synthesis Improvement By Machine Learning Of Natural Prosody, Joseph Kane, Michael N. Johnstone, Patryk Szewczyk

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Since the advent of modern computing, researchers have striven to make the human–computer interface (HCI) as seamless as possible. Progress has been made on various fronts, e.g., the desktop metaphor (interface design) and natural language processing (input). One area receiving attention recently is voice activation and its corollary, computer-generated speech. Despite decades of research and development, most computer-generated voices remain easily identifiable as non-human. Prosody in speech has two primary components—intonation and rhythm—both often lacking in computer-generated voices. This research aims to enhance computer-generated text-to-speech algorithms by incorporating melodic and prosodic elements of human speech. This study explores a novel …
