Lower Bound on Preserved Flood Duration in Fluvial Bedform Stratigraphy (experimental dataset)

This data is collected to assess the role of hydrograph timescale relative to dune migration on the preservation of cross sets in the stratigraphic record. The data presented here are of dune evolution under steady-state conditions, as well as three hydrographs of the same magnitude but varying timescales.

Methodology:

We collected data from four experiments tracking bedform evolution in a 22-m-long, 0.56-m-wide, 0.9-m-deep flume at the University of New Orleans Dynamics of Sedimentation laboratory. We conducted an equilibrium experiment (discharge value 0.027 m3/s) and three flood experiments, which were characterized by a symmetrical flood wave. In all flood experiments, the …

Method For Calibrating An Arduino-Based Soil Moisture Sensor Using Van Genuchten’S Equation, Victorino A. Bato, John Osbert Alindogan

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Instructions on building a do-it-yourself soil moisture sensor using Arduino microcontrollers abound on the Internet. These do-it-yourself soil moisture sensors are favorite projects by both plant and microcontroller enthusiasts because the parts are affordable and the end product is functional. In the absence of proper calibration, these soil moisture sensors cannot generate usable information on the status of plant-available-water in the soil. This research demonstrates the calibration of an Arduino-based soil moisture sensor using the soil moisture characteristic curve of a clay loam soil. Van Genuchten’s model was used to generate an equation and various parameters specific to the soil. …

Designing An Optical Router Based On A Multimode-Interference Silicon-On-Insulator Coupler With Tunable Power Transmittance, Dana S. Akil, Muhammad A. Othman, Sherif M. Sherif, Mohamed A. Swillam

Faculty Journal Articles

The demand on fast and high-bandwidth data transmission is in continuous increase. These demands are highly dependent on optical signal manipulation, including switching, modulation, and routing. We demonstrate a two-port silicon optical router based on the multimode interferometer (MMI) configuration. The same MMI structure was used for both inward and backward waveguiding to reduce the total length of the device. A phase shifter consisting of two ring-like waveguides made of silicon p-n junctions was used to introduce the phase shift needed for optical routing upon voltage application. Two designs for the MMI optical router were studied: Firstly, a conventional MMI …

Two-Electron Density Of Three Electrons In A 1d Box: A Model System For Visualizing Spin Correlation Due To Antisymmetry Of Electrons, Joseph D. Alia Mar 2024

Two-Electron Density Of Three Electrons In A 1d Box: A Model System For Visualizing Spin Correlation Due To Antisymmetry Of Electrons, Joseph D. Alia

Chemistry Publications

Visual models for understanding electron density distribution in molecules are useful for chemical reasoning. The Lewis structure for example compares well to one-electron density when all electrons are paired. Linnett Double Quartet structures compare well to some kinds of free radical species. These approaches do not show the behavior of the total electron wavefunction when two electrons near each other. This behavior is a two- electron property and can be visualized with the model of three electrons in a one- dimensional box. The two-electron density of the three electron wavefunction described as a slater determinent of 1D particle-in-a-box spin- orbitals …

Microplastics In Atlantic Ribbed Mussels (Geukensia Demissa) From The Delaware Inland Bays, Usa, Jeffrey Ashley, Amanda Pilat, Ariana Ohlweiler, Connor Ogden, Priya Modi, Spencer Talbot, Caya Smith, Justin O'Pella, Gulnihal Ozbay

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Due to the prevalence of plastic pollution in coastal ecosystems, aquatic organisms are at high risk for accumulating microplastics (MPs). Filter-feeding bivalves, such as mussels and oysters, may be exposed to, and subsequently accumulate, MPs due to the high volume of water they pass through their bodies. This study assessed the levels of MPs within Atlantic ribbed mussels (Geukensia demissa), a common filter feeder found along the United States Atlantic Coast, from 12 sites within Rehoboth Bay, Indian River Bay, and Little Assawoman Bay, collectively known as the Delaware Inland Bays. Composited mussels from each site were digested using potassium …

Four Futures Of Chevron Deference, Daniel Walters Mar 2024

Four Futures Of Chevron Deference, Daniel Walters

Faculty Scholarship

In two upcoming cases, the Supreme Court will consider whether to overturn the Chevron doctrine, which, since 1984, has required courts to defer to reasonable agency interpretations of otherwise ambiguous statutes. In this short essay, I defend the proposition that, even on death’s door, Chevron deference is likely to be resurrected, and I offer a simple positive political theory model that helps explain why. The core insight of this model is that the prevailing approach to judicial review of agency interpretations of law is politically contingent—that is, it is likely to represent an equilibrium that efficiently maximizes the Supreme Court’s …

Simulated Annealing With Reinforcement Learning For The Set Team Orienteering Problem With Time Windows, Vincent F. Yu, Nabila Y. Salsabila, Shih-W Lin, Aldy Gunawan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research investigates the Set Team Orienteering Problem with Time Windows (STOPTW), a new variant of the well-known Team Orienteering Problem with Time Windows and Set Orienteering Problem. In the STOPTW, customers are grouped into clusters. Each cluster is associated with a profit attainable when a customer in the cluster is visited within the customer's time window. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming model is formulated for STOPTW to maximizing total profit while adhering to time window constraints. Since STOPTW is an NP-hard problem, a Simulated Annealing with Reinforcement Learning (SARL) algorithm is developed. The proposed SARL incorporates the core concepts …

Community Similarity Based On User Profile Joins, Konstantinos Theocharidis, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Similarity joins on multidimensional data are crucial operators for recommendation purposes. The classic -join problem finds all pairs of points within distance to each other among two -dimensional datasets. In this paper, we consider a novel and alternative version of -join named community similarity based on user profile joins (CSJ). The aim of CSJ problem is, given two communities having a set of -dimensional users, to find how similar are the communities by matching every single pair of users (a user can be matched with at most one other user) having an absolute difference of at most per …

Ur2m: Uncertainty And Resource-Aware Event Detection On Microcontrollers, Hong Jia, Young D. Kwon, Dong Ma, Nhat Pham, Lorena Qendro, Tam Vu, Cecilia Mascolo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional machine learning techniques are prone to generating inaccurate predictions when confronted with shifts in the distribution of data between the training and testing phases. This vulnerability can lead to severe consequences, especially in applications such as mobile healthcare. Uncertainty estimation has the potential to mitigate this issue by assessing the reliability of a model's output. However, existing uncertainty estimation techniques often require substantial computational resources and memory, making them impractical for implementation on microcontrollers (MCUs). This limitation hinders the feasibility of many important on-device wearable event detection (WED) applications, such as heart attack detection. In this paper, we present …

Toward A Latinx Stratification Economics, Stephan Lefebvre, Alan Aja, Nancy López, William A. Darity Jr., Darrick Hamilton

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper describes Latinx stratification economics (LSE) as a scholarly approach to studying the economic status of Latinas/os/es/xs primarily in the United States. We coin the term LSE to refer to work that draws on and is in conversation with both the emergent, interdisciplinary subfield of stratification economics (SE) and the interdisciplinary field of Latinx studies (LS). SE and LS have distinct intellectual traditions and drawing on both leads to strong theoretical and empirical scholarship on Latinxs, on the operation of race across space and historical time, and on the intersection of race with other systems of domination. We discuss …

Analysis And Application Of The Offense-Defense Theory: Russia, Ukraine, And History., Kirby Ballard Mar 2024

Analysis And Application Of The Offense-Defense Theory: Russia, Ukraine, And History., Kirby Ballard

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Political scientists and government advisors have long sought to understand what influences conflicts and how to predict them. Despite constant war, a commonly used empirical theory that can answer this question has not emerged. The majority of theories created are either conflict-specific or not empirically testable. Considering these factors, I sought out a theory that would help me better understand Russia's choice to invade Ukraine in the spring of 2022. I selected the offense-defense theory due to its many attempts to explain territorial conquest, the likeliness of conflict, and overall losses. The main focus of the theory is to explain …

Multilayered Energy Management Framework For Extreme Fast Charging Stations Considering Demand Charges, Battery Degradation, And Forecast Uncertainties, Waqas Ur Rehman, Jonathan W. Kimball, Rui Bo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To achieve a cost-effective and expeditious charging experience for extreme fast charging station (XFCS) owners and electric vehicle (EV) users, the optimal operation of XFCS is crucial. It is, however, challenging to simultaneously manage the profit from energy arbitrage, the cost of demand charges, and the degradation of a battery energy storage system (BESS) under uncertainties. This article, therefore, proposes a multilayered Mult timescale energy flow management framework for an XFCS by considering long- and short-term forecast uncertainties, monthly demand charges reduction, and BESS life degradation. in the proposed approach, an upper scheduling layer (USL) ensures the overall operation economy …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Despite the recognition of the built environment as a sector with high potential for reducing embodied emissions, there is a lack of national-level data on embodied carbon emissions attributed to the US commercial building stocks. Hence, there is a need to benchmark the current state of embodied emissions attributed to the commercial built environment and the impact of circular economy (CE) policies for their decarbonization to facilitate well-informed decision-making. This paper fills this knowledge gap through providing policy makers with a framework that estimates the current and future projections of embodied carbon emissions attributable to the US commercial building stocks …

Many bird species have advanced their first egg dates in response to recent milder winters and increases in spring temperatures. Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) begin egg laying earlier in warmer springs at most, but not all, study sites. We examined whether Tree Swallows that nested in boxes in west Michigan responded to an increase in spring temperatures from 1993 to 2018 by advancing their first egg dates. May, but not April, mean daily temperatures got significantly warmer from 1993 to 2018. We found that the first egg dates, but not mean first egg dates, of both second year …

The Janssen Effect And The Chini Ordinary Differential Equation, Adam Rogers, George Dyck, Jitendra Paliwal, Kurt Hildebrand, Michael D. Montross, Aaron P. Turner

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The Janssen effect describes the increase in pressure with depth in granular materials. However, the original Janssen formulation treats the density as constant. In this work, we examine parametric density models that depend on both pressure and moisture content and allow for temperature dependence to be easily included. We focus on physically-motivated empirical models that are built on power-law terms. These power-law terms correspond to thermodynamic equations of state, such as the ideal gas law, and polytropic processes. When coupled with the Janssen ordinary differential equation (ODE), these power-law models have the form of a Chini ODE. We study the …

Pollinator Communities And Their Ecosystem Services At Conservation Grasslands And Adjacent Croplands, Araceli Gomez Villegas Mar 2024

Pollinator Communities And Their Ecosystem Services At Conservation Grasslands And Adjacent Croplands, Araceli Gomez Villegas

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Pollinators are intrinsically linked to the success of unmanaged and managed ecosystems by providing pollination services that aid in the reproduction of wildflowers and many crops. Land use change, habitat loss, fragmentation, and related landscape-level phenomena (for example, increased pesticide exposure) threaten pollinators and have been associated with population declines. In the Midwestern region of the United States, land conversion of native prairies and grasslands to row-crop agriculture has been one of the largest contributors to pollinator habitat loss. Conservation programs, such as the Conservation Reserve Program, have worked towards removing environmentally sensitive lands from agriculture production and enrolling them …

Weakly Supervised Attention-Based Recognition Under Spectral, Turbulence, And Resource Variations, Kshitij Naresh Nikhal Mar 2024

Weakly Supervised Attention-Based Recognition Under Spectral, Turbulence, And Resource Variations, Kshitij Naresh Nikhal

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

While supervised optimization paradigms are ubiquitous across diverse recognition systems, the risk of over-fitting and increasing bias have limited their applicability.

This dissertation focuses on unsupervised learning—learning without precisely curated data—and argues that unsupervised learning methods can enable both discriminability and generalizability. Through the use of attention-based machine learning and advanced clustering, unsupervised methods are able to focus on fine-grained information in images without any explicit supervision. The dissertation introduces a domain-bridging framework for tasks like cross-spectrum matching and long-range recognition, utilizing intra-domain clustering and inter-domain matching to generate pseudo-labels. Additionally, a hash-based network is proposed to accelerate the search …

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The invention of a cryptographically relevant quantum computer would revolutionize computing power, transforming industry and national security. While a theoretical possibility at the time of this writing, the ability of quantum algorithms to solve the factoring and discrete logarithm problems, upon which all currently employed public-key cryptography depends, presents a serious threat to digital communications. This research examines both the mathematics and government policy behind these risks and their implications for cybersecurity. Specifically, a case study of RSA, Shor’s algorithm, and the American Intelligence Community’s plan to transition toward quantum-resistant algorithms is presented to analyze quantum threats and opportunities and …

Natural Resource Conflict And Socioenvironmental Resistance In Arctic States: Assessing Domestic Risks To Circumpolar Security, Jen Evans Mar 2024

Natural Resource Conflict And Socioenvironmental Resistance In Arctic States: Assessing Domestic Risks To Circumpolar Security, Jen Evans

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

How does climate change contribute to domestic natural resource conflict and socioenvironmental resistance in the Arctic? The literature assumes that developed Arctic nations possess sufficient state capacity to overcome risks of domestic conflict and unrest posed by regional development and environmental change. Arctic policy correspondingly focuses on natural resource competition, disputes, and conflict at the international level. The mechanisms and processes of domestic natural resource conflict and socioenvironmental resistance in the Arctic have thus been largely ignored in the literature, even though 27 cases of contention have occurred since the ‘shock’ sea-ice melt of 2007.

In this study, I draw …

The study discusses a method for monitoring the internal condition of choke valves to predict sand erosion using flow coefficient (Cv). The method calculates the Cv of the choke valve by utilizing eight parameters and compares it to the newly manufactured value to generate warnings. However, the availability of spot-check well test data can significantly impact the model's efficiency if tests are performed infrequently. To address this issue, the Extended Cv monitoring method is proposed in this paper. The main purpose of this study is to develop a model for estimating Cv value in the absence of well test data. …

Stopguess: A Framework For Public-Key Authenticated Encryption With Keyword Search, Tao Xiang, Zhongming Wang, Biwen Chen, Xiaoguo Li, Peng Wang, Fei Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Public key encryption with keyword search (PEKS) allows users to search on encrypted data without leaking the keyword information from the ciphertexts. But it does not preserve keyword privacy within the trapdoors, because an adversary (e.g., untrusted server) might launch inside keyword-guessing attacks (IKGA) to guess keywords from the trapdoors. In recent years, public key authenticated encryption with keyword search (PAEKS) has become a promising primitive to counter the IKGA. However, existing PAEKS schemes focus on the concrete construction of PAEKS, making them unable to support modular construction, intuitive proof, or flexible extension. In this paper, our proposal called “StopGuess” …
