Difficulties Of Hydrofracturing In Sandstone – Experimental Study, S Vikram, Dheeraj Kumar, Ds Subrahmanyam Mar 2024

Difficulties Of Hydrofracturing In Sandstone – Experimental Study, S Vikram, Dheeraj Kumar, Ds Subrahmanyam

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Hydrofracturing in sandstone is not an easy task. Sandstone is porous; fluid dissipation is common hence unable to obtain breakdown pressures in certain flow rates (0.0000005–0.0001 m3/s). The higher flow rate (0.00025 m3/s) is ascertained to determine the fracturing pressures. Due to this, fracture propagation and delineation are observed [1]. To enhance, an experimental method is adopted by carrying out 6 Hydrofracturing tests in a borehole comprising sandstone. A high flow rate of 0.00025 m3/s and viscosity 0.001 Pascal second is applied. Later, the fracture simulation was run on 12 core samples collected from the same depths in a lab. …

School of Medicine Faculty Publications and Presentations

The continuing emergence of new strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has renewed interest in phage therapy, however, there has been limited progress in applying phage therapy to multi-drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infections. In this study, we show that bacteriophage strains D29 and DS6A can efficiently lyse Mtb H37Rv in 7H10 agar plates. However, only phage DS6A efficiently kills H37Rv in liquid culture and in Mtb-infected human primary macrophages. We further show in subsequent experiments that, after the humanized mice were infected with aerosolized H37Rv, then treated with DS6A intravenously, the DS6A treated mice showed increased body weight and improved pulmonary …

A Heuristic Approach To Solving Complex Litigation Problems, Melanie L. Oxhorn Mar 2024

A Heuristic Approach To Solving Complex Litigation Problems, Melanie L. Oxhorn

University of Cincinnati Law Review

This Article’s purpose is to propose a heuristic for effectively resolving complex litigation problems that are not clearly or concisely defined, do not present any immediate solutions, frequently involve novel situations or applications of legal doctrine, and suggest a variety of possible approaches. The features of this heuristic are derived from and compatible with what we know about good scientific theories and cognitive studies on acquiring knowledge and expertise in any area. As proposed herein, students and less experienced practitioners should focus on developing “critical thinking” skills allowing them to use their training and experience to become adept at identifying …

Montana largest race/ethnic non-While population is Native Americans (NAs) - 8.2% of the population compared to 1.7% nationally (American Community Survey 2017; U.S. Census Bureau, 2015). Montana, known for its expansive Native American reservation territories, is also home to a significant number of tribal colleges.

While tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) play a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage and fostering academic growth, Native American students face distinctive challenges when they graduate from a TCU and transfer to a 4-year institution outside their reservations. These challenges include maintaining a sense of community connection, encountering a lack of cultural competence in …

Prdm3 Protein Purification: An Optimized Approach For Structural Understanding, Ifeoluwa A. Dada Mar 2024

Prdm3 Protein Purification: An Optimized Approach For Structural Understanding, Ifeoluwa A. Dada

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Investigating proteins involved in driving cancer progression is crucial for advancing therapeutic strategies. PRDM3 (PR/SET domain-containing 3) has emerged as a key player in sustaining ovarian tumors. To facilitate an in-depth study of PRDM3, obtaining the protein in substantial quantities with a high-level purity through recombinant expression is imperative.

The methodology comprises a series of steps: integrating the PRDM3 gene fused with an affinity tag into a plasmid; transferring the engineered plasmid into bacterial cells; expressing the affinity-tagged protein (fusion protein) within the bacterial cells and harvesting them. Cell lysis and protein extraction are then conducted, followed by affinity chromatography …

Landscape Influences On Microclimate And Tree Growth Cessation In A Semi-Arid Montane Forest, Fin Malone, Kelsey G. Jencso, Zachary H. Hoylman

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

As climate change impacts the severity and frequency of drought, knowledge of hillslope-to-watershed scale ecohydrology is becoming increasingly necessary to inform appropriate conservation, restoration, and management of forested ecosystems. In mountain environments, spatial patterns of water and energy organize forest productivity at plot, hillslope, and watershed scales. These microclimatic patterns are impacted by gradients in elevation, aspect, and local topographic convergence and divergence. In water-limited systems, such patterns of moisture may be first-order drivers of intra-annual tree growth. However, there is limited field-based research characterizing how seasonal limitations of forest growth may vary across complex terrain. In 2016, continuous soil …

Florida Historical Quarterly

On October 12, 1519, during the early days of the Spanish conquest of what is today Mexico, an irate Diego Velazquez, Governor of Cuba, wrote to the young Charles V of Spain from the port of Santiago de Cuba. In his letter he complained that a vessel had arrived August 23rd of that year, secretly and illegally from Mexico, with a substantial cargo of gold and jewels. The vessel carried Captain Francisco de Montejo, who would one day be the Governor of Yucatan and Honduras, and Captain Alonso Hernandez Puerto Carrero. The vessel sailed under the expert guidance of the …

Y-Dna For Paternal Lineage Research, Jaymes Mozingo Mar 2024

Y-Dna For Paternal Lineage Research, Jaymes Mozingo

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Since 1999, Y-DNA testing has become a scientific mainstay for genetic studies, as well as a modern pastime among genealogical enthusiasts and researchers using objective data in the study of family lineages, particularly paternal-line ancestors. The company that pioneered the use of this technology is one called Family Tree DNA.

Many DNA testing companies, i.e., websites like 23andMe, Ancestry, MyHeritage, etc., focus primarily on Autosomal and Mitochondrial DNA, typically integrated through maternal lineages; however, this approach has limitations when seeking a broader view with more depth into lineages that span over thousands of years as compared to the mere 150–200 …

Ambient Air Pollution, Geomasking, And Hypertensive Disorders Of Pregnancy In Montana, Elizabeth Williams, Jon Graham, Bradley Holbrook, Jonathon Knudson, Erin Landguth, Cindy Leary, Laura Williamson, Holly Winn

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Being one of the leading causes of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs), including eclampsia, preeclampsia, and gestational hypertension, are a major public health burden. Research links fine particulate matter air pollution (PM2.5) to increased risk of HDPs, but such studies are lacking in wildfire-prone rural areas. While PM2.5 concentrations have been decreasing around most of the US in the last few decades, Montana and other western states have experienced an increase in PM2.5 concentrations due to increasing wildfire activity.

Moreover, a growing body of research into the health effects …

Human-Bear Conflicts In Southwest Montana: Mapping Attractants And Prevention Efforts In Missoula And Ravalli Counties, Jessica N. Reyes Mar 2024

Human-Bear Conflicts In Southwest Montana: Mapping Attractants And Prevention Efforts In Missoula And Ravalli Counties, Jessica N. Reyes

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Missoula and Ravalli Counties in Montana, renowned for their prime bear habitats encompassing mountains, rivers, creeks, and forests, have witnessed a notable increase in human-bear conflicts over the past two decades. This escalation is attributed to concurrent growth in both human and bear populations, coupled with climate-induced constraints on natural food sources. Human-bear conflicts arise primarily when bears access human-associated foods (attractants), including fruit trees, garbage, and bird feeders. Evaluation of conflicts relies predominantly on voluntary reports, revealing a significant reporting gap between Ravalli and Missoula Counties. Despite this, conflict reports and prevention strategies remain unexamined based on attractant types …

Investigating The Germination Of Perennial Grasses: A Key To Restoring Rangelands, Sophia N. Lasche Mar 2024

Investigating The Germination Of Perennial Grasses: A Key To Restoring Rangelands, Sophia N. Lasche

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Rangelands cover approximately 47% of the Earth’s land surface and are often dominated by perennial grasslands. In recent decades many of these perennial grass populations have been declining due to land use and climate shifts. With this decline of many perennial grass populations, and the vulnerable state of many rangelands, several varieties of perennial grass have been developed for consideration for rangeland restoration in the Southwestern United States. Using three perennial grass restoration “workhorse” species (Bouteoula gracilis, Bouteloua curtipendula, and Sporobolus cryptandrus), several varieties of these species have been developed and are commonly used. Three different types are Cultivars, Wild-collected …

The Sunflower Lemma, Ryan Wood Mar 2024

The Sunflower Lemma, Ryan Wood

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Suppose everyone at Gradcon listed their top 5 favorite movies of all time. To save everyone the trouble of ranking, we'll assume the lists are unordered. Here's the question: how many lists do we need to guarantee we have three lists, any two of which share the exact same titles? For example, three lists that share nothing in common would satisfy our condition. It turns out that such an event is guaranteed if we have 3840 lists. This seems rather large, and is probably far too many, but trying to find a better upper bound has been a project of …

Patterns And Prediction Of The Snowpack Ripening Using Machine Learning Methods, Clement Cherblanc, Joel T. Harper, Javier Perez Alvaro Mar 2024

Patterns And Prediction Of The Snowpack Ripening Using Machine Learning Methods, Clement Cherblanc, Joel T. Harper, Javier Perez Alvaro

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

A winter snowpack is not runoff capable until it is warmed to 0 degree Celsius and saturated in liquid water, the achievement of this state is called ripening Whether a snowpack is ripened or not is a critical information of the snowpack state and behavior regarding water availability and floods. Before a snowpack is ripened, it is a buffer to rain and intense melt. Once a snowpack ripens, rain and high temperature will cause water releases that may be available for soil and ecosystems, but can also cause floods. In addition, hydroelectric dams rely on gradual release of water caused …

Wang Tilings In Arbitrary Dimensions, Ian Tassin Mar 2024

Wang Tilings In Arbitrary Dimensions, Ian Tassin

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

This paper makes a new observation about arbitrary dimensional Wang Tilings,
demonstrating that any d -dimensional tile set that can tile periodically along d − 1 axes must be able to tile periodically along all axes.
This work also summarizes work on Wang Tiles up to the present day, including
definitions for various aspects of Wang Tilings such as periodicity and the validity of a tiling. Additionally, we extend the familiar 2D definitions for Wang Tiles and associated properties into arbitrary dimensional spaces. While there has been previous discussion of arbitrary dimensional Wang Tiles in other works, it has been …

Algorithmic Design And Computational Modeling Using Dynamic Spectrum Allocation Techniques To Optimize Bandwidth Management In Wireless Communication Systems, Ankit Walishetti Mar 2024

Algorithmic Design And Computational Modeling Using Dynamic Spectrum Allocation Techniques To Optimize Bandwidth Management In Wireless Communication Systems, Ankit Walishetti

Distinguished Student Work

This study aims to address the pressing need for efficient spectrum management methodologies in wireless communication systems by developing innovative sorting and allocation algorithms. Leveraging Dynamic Spectrum Allocation (DSA) techniques, this research devises strategies to optimize the utilization of bandwidth within existing spectrum space, ultimately reducing the need for network infrastructure expansion.

Ensuring thorough coverage of DSA techniques, 5 distinct transmitter sorting algorithms were programmed and tested across 8 performance metrics designed to measure specific capabilities. For consistency, a single bandwidth allocation program was designed to ‘pack’ transmitters starting from the left endpoint of the spectrum space. Progressively varying the …

It Ain’T Necessarily So: Ludwig Boltzmann’S Darwinian Notion Of Entropy, Steven Gimbel Mar 2024

It Ain’T Necessarily So: Ludwig Boltzmann’S Darwinian Notion Of Entropy, Steven Gimbel

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Ludwig Boltzmann's move in his seminal paper of 1877, introducing a statistical understanding of entropy, was a watershed moment in the history of physics. The work not only introduced quantization and provided a new understanding of entropy, it challenged the understanding of what a law of nature could be. Traditionally, nomological necessity, that is, specifying the way in which a system must develop, was considered an essential element of proposed physical laws. Yet, here was a new understanding of the Second Law of Thermodynamics that no longer possessed this property. While it was a new direction in physics, in other …

Langevin Delayed Equations With Prabhakar Derivatives Involving Two Generalized Fractional Distinct Orders, Mustafa Aydin

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

This paper is devoted to defining the delayed analogue of the Mittag-Leffler type function with three parameters and investigating a representation of a solution to Langevin delayed equations with Prabhakar derivatives involving two generalized fractional distinct orders, which are first introduced and investigated, by means of the Laplace integral transform. It is verified by showing the solution satisfies the introduced system. Special cases which are also novel are presented as examples. The findings are illustrated with the help of the RLC circuits.
