Methylene blue (MB) is a well-established antioxidant that has been shown to improve mitochondrial function in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Mitoquinone (MitoQ) is a selective antioxidant that specifically targets mitochondria and effectively reduces the accumulation of reactive oxygen species. To investigate the effect of long-term administration of MB on skeletal morphology, we administered MB to aged (18 months old) female C57BL/J6 mice, as well as to adult male and female mice with a genetically diverse background (UM-HET3). Additionally, we used MitoQ as an alternative approach to target mitochondrial oxidative stress during aging in adult female and male …

The water pressure in aquifers is transmitted as energy, with a transmission rate much higher than the migration rate of water particles. The water-pressure transmission rate holds great significance for the safe construction and disaster forecast and prediction of underground engineering under high-pressure water aquifers and bodies. Focusing on the confined aquifers bearing no cohesive soil, this study explored the law governing the changes in the water-pressure transmission rate through theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, field experiments, and laboratory physical model tests. Key findings are as follows: (1) The transmission of water-pressure changes in the aquifers exhibited noticeable hysteresis. The transmission …

Water development and the proliferation of invasive riparian vegetation has led to widespread habitat loss and simplification of rivers in the western United States, contributing to the imperilment of native fishes. Here, we quantify channel narrowing and vegetation encroachment, which are conspicuous indicators of riverine habitat degradation, along approximately 400 km of three dryland tributaries of the upper Colorado River. To accomplish this, we conducted a comparative analysis of aerial photographs from historical (1930s) and contemporary (2010s or 2020s) time periods and utilized Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data and Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) to determine contemporary canopy cover of …

Factorization In Cybersecurity: A Dual Role Of Defense And Vulnerability In The Age Of Quantum Computing, Himateja Arukala
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most critical components of modern cryptography and thus cybersecurity is the ability to factor large integers quickly and efficiently. RSA encryption, one of the most used types, is based largely on the assumption that factoring for large numbers is computationally infeasible for humans and computers alike. However, with quantum computers, people can use an algorithm like Shor’s algorithm to perform the same task exponentially faster than any normal device ever could. This investigation will go into the strength and vulnerability of RSA encryption using the power of factorization in an age of quantum computers. We start by looking …

Small, highly charged liquid droplets are unstable with respect to spontaneous charge separation when their size drops below the Rayleigh limit or, in other words, their fissility parameter X exceeds the value 1. The absence of small doubly charged atomic cluster ions in mass spectra below an element-specific appearance size na has sometimes been attributed to the onset of barrierless fission at X = 1. However, more realistic models suggest that na marks the size below which the rate of fission surpasses that of competing dissociative channels, and the Rayleigh limit of doubly charged van der Waals clusters …

Patchy particles occupy an increasingly important space in soft matter research due to their ability to assemble into intricate phases and states. Being able to fine-tune the interactions among these particles is essential to understanding the principles governing the self-assembly processes. However, current fabrication techniques often yield patches that deviate chemically and physically from the native particles, impeding the identification of the driving forces behind self-assembly. To overcome this challenge, we propose a new approach to synthesizing spherical colloids with a well-defined rough patch on their surface. By treating polystyrene microspheres with vapors of a good solvent, here an acetone-water …

Toward Local Madelung Mechanics In Spacetime, Mordecai Waegell
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
It has recently been shown that relativistic quantum theory leads to a local interpretation of quantum mechanics wherein the universal wavefunction in configuration space is entirely replaced with an ensemble of local fluid equations in spacetime. For want of a fully relativistic quantum fluid treatment, we develop a model using the nonrelativistic Madelung equations, and obtain conditions for them to be local in spacetime. Every particle in the Madelung fluid is equally real, and has a definite position, momentum, kinetic energy, and potential energy. These are obtained by defining quantum momentum and kinetic energy densities for the fluid and separating …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Prediction and control of two-phase flow chokeling in tight gas wellbores are essential for the normal operation and hydrate control of high-pressure gas wells producing water. The thermodynamic differential equations of energy, kinetic energy and temperature and models of chokeling field for two-phase energy, system heat, mass balance and flow were developed under the conditions of isentropic adiabatic, isobaric heat capacity, constant volume heat capacity, and chokeling energy. A methodology on predicting characteristics and control of two-phase flow before and after chokeling was proposed for gas-water two phase flow. It provided a theoretical basis for optimizing the structural parameters of …
